Avengers (Vol. 2) #1

Loki materializes over the Earth, his memories hazy, when he attempts to return to Asgard he finds that the Rainbow bridge is missing and upon searching mystically realizes that the nine worlds of Asgard are seemingly missing. Believing that Thor is the cause of all this he goes searching for his brother and finds him frozen in a block of ice in Norway where he has just been discovered by archeologist Dr. Donald Blake. Loki attempts to destroy Thor then and there and finds that his magics are unable to do so. Blake, seeing the strange spectacle decides to call in SHIELD and the newly formed Avengers. Remembering the Avengers, Loki decides to go and seek them out and learn what his old foes are doing.

Seeking them out he finds the newly built Avengers Island headquarters off the coast of Manhattan. Peering inside he witnesses as the Scarlet Witch is unpacking her room with her teacher Agatha Harkness. Loki detects that the Scarlet Witch is a powerful sorceress, and she manages to pick up Loki's presence even though Agatha cannot. Not wishing to be seen yet Loki would go onward. He'd enter the wrong of the Swordsman, and note how the hero is a narcissistic braggart. In the next room, he finds Hawkeye working out in a rigorous training schedule. In another room he finds Hellcat watching television until she is interrupted by the Vision. The Vision departs abruptly when Hellcat offers to try out a new massage technique on her.

In yet another room he finds the living legend of World War II, Captain America, scanning the Captains mind he learns that it is filled with much turmoil and strife. Elsewhere in the complex Nick Fury is showing government liaison Henry Gyrich around the island, listening to Gyrich's complaints that super-heroes should be outlawed not government sanctioned. Overhearing that the Avengers are waiting to go on their fist mission, Loki begins to realize that he is in some kind of alternate dimension that is different from the one he knows, but still decides to try and get revenge against his long hated foes. The argument between Gyrich and Fury is cut off when they are called by Donald Blake who shows them that he has found the long lost body of Thor the god of thunder.

Elsewhere in the complex, the Scarlet Witch meets with the Vision for the first time and she finds it a little creepy that he was deactivated part way through her conversation with him. Vision shows her around, and introduces her to his creator Dr. Henry Pym and his girlfriend Janet van Dyne, both part of the Avengers support staff. Janet is startled by Pym's newest creation Ultron-1, his new lab assistant since the Vision has joined active duty with the Avengers. The alarm sounds and soon the Avengers are deployed to Norway to investigate Blakes discovery.

In Norway, Blake shows the Avengers Thor, and his uncovered hammer, deciding to break Thor free from the ice, each of the Avengers attack separately and find that none of them can break through the ice. It takes a combination of Cap's shield, Visions phasing powers and the Scarlet Witch's hex magic to break the ice freeing Thor from his captivity. Realizing that Thor has been in ice for centuries and may simply just be a barbarian he orders the Avengers to stand ready for anything.

Loki then takes the time to appear and convince the confused Thor that the Avengers are Thor's enemy leading to a battle between the Avengers and Thor. The Avengers prove no match for the combined strength and magic of Thor and Loki. However during the fight, Loki tries to strike down Thor with a bolt of magical energy, and is saved by Captain America. Finding his hammer, Thor picks it up and his memories return and he remembers that his brother is a trickster god and turns against him. With Loki distracted, the Scarlet Witch uses her hex powers to banish him away.

With the battle over, Captain America establishes that the Avengers are heroes and asks Thor what happened to him. Thor cannot recall, he remembers an onslaught and possibly Ragnarok but not much else. Realizing that having Thor's raw strength on the team could be a great asset to the group they invite the thunder god to join them, an offer which Thor agrees to take.

While in the limbo realm that Loki has been banished too, the trickster god is confronted by Amora the Enchantress who agree to team-up and work with Loki as she has an interest in the Scarlet Witch, someone that the Enchantress claims is her daughter.

Avengers (Vol. 2) #2

Henry Gyrich is furious that the Avengers have allowed Thor, a time lost barbarian and thunder god join their team without his sanction. While Gyrich demands to speak to Nick Fury, Captain America, Vision and Henry Pym test out Thor's strength to find his upper limits. During the test, Vision notices that Ultron (now upgraded to Ultron-2) has exhibited the ability to upgrade himself, an ability that the Vision himself does not have. Thor begins to grow bored with the constant tests and demands that they treat him by his godly statue not like some test animal.

Elsewhere, Janet van Dyne takes the Scarlet Witch and Hellcat out shopping for new clothes, while Swordsman and Hawkeye train in Avengers Island. Hawkeye expresses his displeasure with being led by Captain America and his ambitions to lead the Avengers. While nearby a strange ship materializes next to the George Washington Bridge, prompting the Avengers attention. The strange ship approaches Avengers Island just as Scarlet Witch and Hellcat are returning from shopping and they are struck down by an energy bolt fired by it's pilot. Thor, Vision, Cap, Hawkeye and Swordsman then rush out of the complex to greet their attacker.

The attacker introduces himself as Kang the Conqueror, a time traveler from the 31st Century come to best the Avengers in battle. While elsewhere Loki and Enchantress make a deal that Loki is to attack and destroy the Avengers, however he must turn the Scarlet Witch, the Enchantress' supposed daughter, over to her. This pact has an impact that is felt by Agatha Harkness all the way in Salem Massachusetts, making her sense that Wanda is in trouble.

The Avengers meanwhile are battling Kang, and finding that their weapons are ineffective against the time travelers future technology. However the constant bombardment of Thor and the others causes Kang's personal force field to go down, however when the Vision tries to phase through Kang, he is knocked out and a beam fired from Kang's ship knocks out all the Avengers except for Thor. When Thor attempts to attack Kang, he is stopped by a tractor beam that captures him as well.

With the Avengers all but defeated Nick Fury orders Sellars to call in the Fantastic Four, however they are presently busy on a mission. With no other choice, Fury decides to mobilize a SHIELD assault team to try and free the Avengers. Inside Kang's ship, Kang has all the Avengers in stasis and is displaying the Vision, Thor's hammer, Captain America's shield, Swordsman's swords, and Hawkeye's bow and arrows as trophies which he displays for his love, the reason for his trip back into the past to attack the worlds greatest heroes: Mantis.

With the Avengers captured by the 31st Century tyrant known as Kang the Conqueror, Nick Fury leads a SHIELD unit on the counter attack in the hopes of freeing the heroes, however they prove incapable of matching the high tech weapons that Kang's ship is armed with. As Kang's lover Mantis watches on, she is surprised to find that the SHIELD agents continue to resist him even though they are overpowered.

While on Avengers Island, Janet van Dyne rushes into Henry Pym's lab to ask him if he's heard about the attack on New York by Kang. When Pym seems too engrossed in his work Ultron-3 attempts to comfort Janet, who does not receive the affection very well, prompting her to tell the robot not to touch her, this display Pym finds odd because he never programmed Ultron to respond in such a way.

Back aboard Kang's ship, the Avengers are kept in stasis, trapped but still able to think. Thor, begins to call out to his hammer causing it to fire bolts of lightning that free the Avengers from their captivity. While back at Avengers Island, a being who appears to be Agatha Harkness comes to the island and walks right past security using her magic to get past the islands defenses. While at the exact same moment the real Agatha Harkness and her familiar Ebony are incapacitated by Loki.

While back in Central Park, the Avengers counter-attack Kang, eventually managing to free Cap, Swordsman, and Hawkeye's weapons from Kang and get the better of him in battle. The Avengers then easily over power Kang who finds himself at the end of the Swordsman's blade. Before the Swordsman can strike a killing blow, Mantis rushes to her lovers side and begs them not to kill him, to take her life instead of his. Captain America steps in then and tells them all to stand down as the Avengers do not kill. With the battle over Kang and Mantis teleport away. In the aftermath of the battle, the Swordsman seems to recall meeting Mantis in the past but he cannot recall when and where.

Just then, Kang's ship then ejects the Vision before disappearing, when the android crash lands in Central Park in a explosive fireball, the Scarlet Witch rushes to his side to find the android heavily damaged.

As Ant-Man descends into Vision's body, he can't help but find this all familiar and is concerned that his micro-gas will have an effect on his health. Before he can explain anything further, Ultron betrays Pym, cutting loose his rip chord and cutting off his connection to the outside world. The Hulk has defeated all the other Avengers, leaving Avengers Island at the mercy of the brute as it continues to search for Bruce Banner -- completely unaware of the fact that he and Banner are one and the same. Before he can rampage further, the Hulk is attacked by Thor who catches the creature off guard. Although Thor initially has the upper hand, the Hulk manages to knock him out, Thor dropping his hammer in the process.

Seeing the Mjolnir as a potential weapon, the Hulk attempts to pick it up, however despite all his strength the green giant fails at lifting up the weapon. Thor revives and reclaims his weapon and summons up all the power of the storms to increase his strength. The resulting battle causes massive damage to Avengers Island, bringing in Nick Fury, SHIELD and the Avengers government liaison Henry Gyrich to the scene. Assessing the situation, SHIELD agent Carlos Smith informs Nick Fury that the battle between the Hulk and Thor has caused a crack in the gamma core that powers Avengers Island, if the core reaches critical mass it would destroy the entire eastern United States.

Below, Thor has fought off the Hulk for the time being and has begun trying to dig up his comrades, however the Hulk revives and begins fighting Thor again. The battle takes them from room to room and dangerously close to the deactivate Vision, where unknown to all -- Henry Pym is inside trying to effect repairs. Thor manages to beat the Hulk into a stagger, however this only works to make the Hulk angry, which only increases his strength. Landing a series of blows on the thunder god, Hulk manages to knock Thor out completely. With all the Avengers defeated, there is nobody who can contain the breach in the gamma core which is growing dangerously closer to critical mass.

Breaking into the lower levels the group find Thor still unconscious on the ground. As the Thing checks to see if Thor is still alive, his attention is turned away from Thor just as he revives. While above, a SHIELD recon team is stopped by the arrival of Iron Man. Iron Man contacts Nick Fury and tells them that since Avengers Island is comprised of Stark Industries technology that it is his duty to deal with it and that SHIELD should stay out of the recovery effort. When Fury tries to bark orders, Iron Man initiates the fail safes that he installed in all the Stark invented SHIELD equipment threatening to make the helicarrier crash. Fury concedes and begrudgingly allows Iron Man to go in and deal with the problem.

Thor, Hellcat, Iron Man, and Hawkeye have been ambushed at Avengers Mansion by the Masters of Evil, a group that has appeared seemingly out of nowhere to destroy them. The group easily defeats them and when Thor is about to kill Klaw, Captain America (just arriving after he severed ties with the American Government) stops him and reminds them all that so long as he leads the Avengers, the group will not kill. Sick of the Avengers soft-handed approach with dealing with their enemies, Thor would leave the group. Worse still, this latest attack would has also demoralized Hellcat and Hawkeye into considering quitting the group as well, leaving Captain America and Iron Man to wonder what will happen to the Avengers. Questioning the Black Knight, Captain America learns that they only attacked the Avengers in order to obtain fame and fortune. He then leaves Iron Man to shackle them up while he goes off to check on the Swordsman.

Meanwhile, in limbo, Loki, Enchantress and their slave the Scarlet Witch plan the next phase of Loki's plot to destroy the Avengers. Back on Earth, Janet van Dyne arrives at Avengers Mansion and asks Iron Man to help her find Ant Man who she hasn't been able to find for days. Realizing that the answer to Hank's whereabouts may be found in investigating the remains of the Vision, Iron Man takes Janet and flies off to the SHIELD helicarrier to investigate things further. With the Masters of Evil left unattended, Loki appears and absorbs them into his body as well.

Inside the Vision, Ant-Man revives and realizes he was foolish to approach the Vision's brain without being careful for energy surges. Backing up he begins checking on the Vision's diagnostics. Ant-Man learns that the Vision has been moved to the SHIELD helicarrier, but someone has been accessing the Vision's data from within Avengers Mansion. Before he can shut down the Vision he is attacked by the androids immune system and sent fleeing, he is caught by Iron Man on his way out. Outside of the Visions body, Iron Man and Janet examine it until they are confronted by Nick Fury and SHIELD who demand to know what they are doing snooping around the helicarrier. Fury demands that Iron Man hand over Ant Man for debriefing, and Janet shrinks down to Wasp size to be with her boyfriend. Before things can get straightened out Iron Man's armor detects the fact that the Vision is about to self destruct and carries the body outside of the helicarrier where it detonates harmlessly. As Iron Man escape with Ant Man and the Wasp, Ant Man tells Iron Man to call Captain America as he has learned of something terrible going down.

Elsewhere in the city, Thor broods over what to do next now that he has left the Avengers when he is confronted by the Enchantress. She uses her charm and magics to turn him over to her side and he agrees to fight for Loki's cause. Captain America meanwhile, arrives at the hospital where the Swordsman has been recovering since he was injured by the Hulk. He finds the Swordsman's bed empty and the doctor on duty tells him he heard screaming from the room, but when he entered he was gone. Cap is then radioed by Iron Man and asked to meet with him on Avengers Island.

At Avengers Mansion, Hellcat laments over her animal life features and considers herself a freak. Loki takes advantage of this by appearing before her with the inert body of the Scarlet Witch. Although Hellcat initially attacks, Loki's smooth talking convinces her that he is not coming to her as an enemy but to offer her the beauty she's always wanted by transferring her essence into the body of the Scarlet Witch.

Finally, at Avengers Island, Iron Man, Ant Man, Wasp and Captain America are shocked to find that something has reactivated the gamma core, and somehow it is spawning old Avengers foes: the Super-Adaptoid, the Grim Reaper and the Living Laser. Realizing it's some sort of wrinkle in reality, Iron Man disperses the forming ghost images of these foes with his repulsor rays. However the energy begins to build up again, when Captain America wishes that Thor could be there for them, they are surprised when a second Thor materializes right out of the gamma core.

Captain America, Iron Man, Wasp, and Ant-Man are shocked when from within the reactivated gamma core on Avengers Island comes another incarnation of Thor. This more heroic, caring version of Thor instantly remember these Avengers as his comrades and agrees to join them in going to the Baxter Building to learn why the gamma core is spawning new beings into reality.

Meanwhile out by the Hudson River, Hawkeye questions what future with there is with the Avengers with the Scarlet Witch defected, Hellcat quitting the team, and the Swordsman disappearance. He is then visited by Loki as well as Hellcat (now possessing Scarlet Witch's body) and the two manage to coerce the confused archer into joining their side. While at the Baxter Building, Reed Richards takes a reading on the gamma core and tells the gathered Avengers that it somehow has become a rift in time and space, a virtual white hole and that with Bruce Banner missing they could be sitting on a powder keg if it's not taken under control right away. While in Loki's limbo, Loki welcomes the defected Thor into his ranks and prepares all his new charges in mounting another attack on the Avengers. While in Peru, Nick Fury is leading a SHIELD unit to the location of Kang's ship. There they find the ship empty and review it's security tapes learning that Kang and his lover Mantis have been absorbed by Loki.

Realizing what's going on Fury rushes back to New York to tell the Avengers. There Ant-Man is deducing that whatever was spawning villains out of the gamma core came from the Visions memories, when Fury enters the room and to tell them what they need to know. Realizing that there is another Thor among them, he tells them the original Thor that they rescued in Norway is tearing up a bar in the city, sending the new Thor to investigate. Fury then shows the remaining Avengers the security footage from Kang's ship when they are suddenly attacked by Scarlet Witch/Hellcat, Hawkeye, Enchantress and Thor. The Avengers are taking a pounding when the other Thor returns and battles his duplicate.

With all parties otherwise occupied, Loki takes this opportunity to travel to Avengers Island where he decides to absorb the power from the gamma core directly, granting him ultimate power which he intends to use to take over the universe.

Continued from last issue...

Loki has absorbed power directly from the gamma core on Avengers Island, gaining ultimate power and growing to a gigantic size. When Enchantress and Thor attempt to join him, he betrays them striking them down with a bolt of energy. Realizing they have all been betrayed, Hawkeye, Thor, Enchantress and Hellcat (still in Scarlet Witch's body) defect over to the heroes side, however Hellcat doesn't reveal the fact that she is possessing Scarlet Witch's body not wishing to give it up.

Agatha Harkness, still trapped in Ebony's body reveals this when she walks past a mirror however, Hellcats unwillingness to release Wanda's body causes her ultimate demise freeing Wanda and restoring her to normal. Realizing what has happened the Enchantress uses her magic to transform Ebony's body into the likeness of Agatha Harkness so that the witch can be of use to them in the coming battle against Loki. Before they can go further, Hawkeye suddenly doubles over in resistance to Loki's magic, however the Enchantress cautions that if she were to interfere with the struggle it may cause permanent damage.

Elsewhere in the Mansion, Thor realizes the errors of siding with Loki however his doppelganger convinces him that he can make amends by working with the Avengers again in stopping Loki and the two agree to work together. They realize that the source of Loki's power comes from the gamma core and that if they can somehow sever the link it may be the key to defeating Loki.

While the Enchantress, Agatha Harkness and Scarlet Witch pool their magical powers to turn one of the Thor's into a giant replica of Odin to battle Loki with the intent of draining the power he has already absorbed, the other Avengers work to build a device that will blow the flow of gamma chamber energy from restoring Loki's depleted supply of power. Loki begins to realize the ruse when the giant Odin look-alike uses a hammer and realizes that it's Thor in disguise, striking a crippling blow that depletes his energy.

Seeking to absorb more, the heroes block his power source prompting Loki to go to the ruins of Avengers Island to investigate. He is attacked one more time by "Odin" and Loki strikes a fatal blast of energy that ruins the illusion causing Thor to revert back to his normal form and knock out the mystics at the island. Loki bursts through the walls of Avengers Island with his remaining energies and is about to strike when he is struck by the SHIELD helicarrier's plasma batteries. Captain America then goes toe-to-toe against Loki buying the others enough time to slam Loki with their power reversal cannon an allowing Thor to strike him with his hammer. The resulting combination causes Loki to suddenly disburse into the energy that he absorbed, seemingly destroying him and ending his threat.

With the battle over, Thor goes to his duplicate who makes final peace with his more peaceful counterpart before finally expiring. In the aftermath of the battle Hawkeye has been taken to the hospital where he expects to make a full recovery. Visited by Captain America, Hawkeye feels ashamed for falling for Loki's magic. Captain America tells him that resisting Loki's magic is no easy feat and tells him that he is welcome back with the Avengers once he recovers. Hawkeye tells him that once he is well enough to fight again he'll prove himself and make up for his past failures.

Following the death of one of the Thors, SHIELD arranges to have him put to rest in a traditional Viking burial, only instead of lighting the ship on fire they use the helicarriers plasma batteries to incinerate the ship. As the other Avengers mourn the loss of their other comrades who were killed in battling Loki they are interrupted by a distress call from Clay Quartermain, a SHIELD agent sent out in space to investigate an approaching the Earth. He smashes through the helicarrier and crashes into the ocean in a explosive death.

Before anyone can react, Dr. Doom materializes in the middle of the command room warning the assembled Avengers of the coming of Galactus. He tells them that he comes from the near future where Galactus has already succeeded and orders SHIELD to use the worlds supply of ICBM's to try and destroy the coming disaster. When the Avengers and Nick Fury exhibit a reluctance to trust Doom, he decides to take matters into his own hands and teleports away.

With Galactus fast approaching and his heralds placing terraformers across the globe to convert the Earth into energy that Galactus can consume, Dr. Doom decides to hack into the world's defense system and take control of Earth's missile supplies. While on the other side of the world Nick Fury dispatches the world's heroes to the different locations of the various terraformers. While the most of the Avengers are deployed into action, Ant-Man the Scarlet Witch are transported to Pym's lab where a new body for the Vision is waiting. Pym reveals that before his old body self-destructed Ant-Man saved his memory drive to put in a new body and reactivates Vision.

In Moscow the Fantastic Four arrive at the site of the terraformer being placed by the Silver Surfer. The quartet battle the Surfer ultimately gaining the upper hand when Reed uses his siphon device to drain the Surfer's power while the Human Torch uses his nova flame to destroy the terraformer. This however happens as Dr. Doom launches his first wave of ICBM's, decimating the who area in a massive explosion and killing his hated enemies the Fantastic Four, although the Surfer survives and begins to wonder why the humans fight to save their doomed planet.

While the Hulk, Scarlet Witch and Vision search for the terraformer landed in the South Pole, SHIELD attacks the one headed for Los Angeles leading to a battle against the herald known as Plasma. The initial assault Plasma manages to fend off, mortally wounding Nick Fury. Returning to the SHIELD helicarrier, Fury orders all his men to abandon ship and pilots it into the terraformer destroying it and killing Fury and Plasma in the process, this noble sacrifices is witnessed by the Surfer who becomes more sympathetic to the humans cause.

In Antarctica, the Hulk, Vision and Scarlet Witch battle Firelord, until the Vision manages to incapacitate him by phasing through his body. He then uses Firelord's staff to destroy the terraformer. While they are successful, the Hulk is so seriously hurt that he reverts back to Bruce Banner.

In Tokyo, Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye and the Wasp battle with Terrax. During the fight Hawkeye tries to use one of Loki's enchanted arrows on Terrax, but it only deflects striking him and incinerating him on the spot. When Terrax attempts to strike Thor, the Wasp sacrifices her life taking the blast. Furious at the loss of his comrades, Thor throws his hammer at Terrax sending him flying into the terraformer destroying it and killing Terrax in the process. Doom meanwhile attempts to launch another series of ICBM's at Galactus, however this time a malfunction causes them to detonate before they could launch decimating half of Russia.

When Galactus arrives in New York City he is met with opposition from Thor, Iron Man and Captain America, however his herald Air-Walker arrive and blasts them aside and reveals that more terraformers are being placed all over the world. As Galactus begins feeding on the Earth, the battle damaged Avengers return to Avengers Mansion. Seeing no way to save the Earth and not wishing to leave Galactus free to menace other worlds the heroes agree to destroy Galactus no matter the cost. Bruce Banner comes up with a solution that would rupture the gamma core on Avengers Island causing a space time ripple that would destroy the Earth and everything on it. Finding this plan complete lunacy, Dr. Doom departs to travel back in time once more to try and prevent this disaster from happening. Thor, Captain America and Iron Man venture to Avengers Island where they are joined by the Silver Surfer, who has decided to help them destroy Galactus. They all attack the gamma core causing a massive rupture that destroys the Earth and Galactus in the process, leaving nothing but rubble and Thor's hammer.

Fantastic Four (Vol. 2) #12

Doctor Doom arrives at the Latverian embassy in New York City where he checks on the progress of his new siphon suit, that will enable him to siphon the Power Cosmic from the heralds of Galactus, he learns that his Doombots have completed it as per his specifications. As he inspects the device he is interrupted by one of his embassy employees named Dubeck who informs him that his chrono-displacement device has also arrived and is being assembled as they speak. Doom is satisfied, and prepares to collect what he has sought all along: The Power Cosmic.

In Central Park, the Fantastic Four must face off against Terrax, Firelord and Plasma, all Heralds of Galactus. When Reed's attempt at diplomacy fails Ben and Johnny jump into the fight but are easily fought off by Firelord and Plasma. As Sue uses her invisible force-field to protect the FF And nearby bystanders from Terrax, he manages to smash open her force field but before he can strike her dead he is stopped by the Silver Surfer who has come to protect his friends, he explains that these beings saved his life preciously and are under his protection. Before things can go any further they are all called back to Galactus' side and depart leaving the Fantastic Four to try and figure out what to do next. They are soon greeted by SHIELD agents Dum Dum Dugan and the Countess who take them aboard the SHIELD helicarrier. On board they find that Nick Fury has gathered the Avengers and shows all the assembled heroes the approaching ship that has entered Earth space. They witness as Galactus prepares his terraformers and splits them off to three different locations. Reed correctly deduces that they are heading for Attilan, Monster Island, and New York City. Reed is asked to stay behind to build some kind of device to stop Galactus while the other heroes are dispatched to the various locations to stop each of his heralds from activating the terraformers. Before the heroes depart Reed proposes marriage to Sue who accepts.

The Human Torch goes to Attilan to face off against Firelord with the Inhumans. The fire wielding herald proves to be no match for the assembled super-humans and Black Bolt is forced to use his voice to destroy the terraformer. While this destroys it the resulting explosion kills everyone on site. Before the explosion takes their lives Johnny and Crystal express their love for one another.

On Monster Island, Thor, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Antman, Wasp and Namor confront Plasma. Before they can stop her they are attacked by the Mole Man and his Moloids. The Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye take care of them while the others battle, with Thor killing Plasma with e bolt of lightning. With the terraformer about to activate Namor rips it out of the ground and dives down in the ocean, letting it's awesome pressure crush the device, killing him in the process as well.

The surviving heroes all regroup at Avengers Mansion to watch as SHIELD tries their best to attack Galactus directly, however the Silver Surfer and the defenses on Galactus' platform keep them safe from harm. When Nick Fury uses the helicarrier's plasma cannon on Galactus, it has no effect however Galactus fires a cosmic eye blast back at them severely damaging the helicarrier. Nick Fury orders everyone to abandon ship including Reed Richards who has just finished his nullifier weapon. Fury, with only the Countess aboard flies the helicarrier into Galactus, causing a massive explosion that destroys the planet eaters equipment. The heroes watch as Nick Fury's sacrifice is in vein as Galactus uses raw material around him to create a new device.

Reed gathers all the remaining heroes together and gives Ben his nullifier weapon to use against Galactus. Just then Terrax smashes through the Mansion and attacks the heroes directly. As the Thing successfully keeps Terrax at bay with his nullifier, Hawkeye and Thor manage to destroy the New York based terraformer. With Terrax down momentarily, Thing attempts to absorb Galactus' power, Thor tries to give him an energy boost with his hammer but it only results in feedback that knocks Thor out and revers Thing back to his human form. When Terrax revives the Black Panther attempts to prevent him from killing the now human Ben Grimm, however Terrax commands the ground under the Black Panther to crush both T'Challa and Ben.

Just then Galactus' converter begins to activate and Terrax informs Reed and Sue that there was a fifth and yet unknown herald, the Air-Walker who planted a fourth terraformer in Antarctica, before he can attack Reed and Sue he is downed by the Silver Surfer. Before the Surfer can help them Dr. Doom arrives in his siphon suit and absorbs both his and Terrax's Power Cosmic and attempts to challenge Galactus directly. Galactus swats Doom away as though he were a mere gnat, damaging his suit. When Reed recovers Doom he suggests that they quickly combine his nullifier and Doom's siphon suit, however Doom's pride is too great and he refuses to work with anyone. This is all too late of course as Galactus activates the converter and Earth begins to be consumed. As Reed Richards curses Doom as he and Sue are being consumed Doom activates his time machine to travel back in time just as the Earth is completely destroyed.

On Avengers Island Bruce Banner has one more transformed into the Hulk, quashing the heroes hopes that Banner might be able to stabilized the damaged gamma core which threatens to destroy the entire eastern United States should it explode. The Invisible Woman keeps the Hulk at bay in the hopes that he will eventually change back into Banner, however Mr. Fantastic points out that the gamma radiation leaking out of the gamma core will insure that Banner remains the Hulk, making the heroes realize that in order to fix this problem they are going to have to find some way to work with the Hulk.

This is all being witnessed by Loki and Nick Fury aboard the SHIELD helicarrier. Loki mocks Fury to the point of aggravation however their squabble is cur short when the Human Torch, having absorbed a massive amount of heat energy from the gamma core flies into the air and disperses it, buying the heroes down below more time to try and fix the gamma core.

Thor and the Thing have just arrived back from their battle and introduce themselves to the recently arrived Iron Man. They also reveal to Iron Man that the Hulk is Bruce Banner. Iron Man joins Reed Richards and Captain America in the control room where they begin contemplating how to fix the problem with the gamma core. Realizing their only hope is to re-channel the energy from the gamma core into the Earth's core, the heroes come up with a plan to solve the problem:

With Captain America keeping the security doors open, Thor and Thing clear the rubble blocking the path to the gamma core. Iron Man then convinces the Hulk to travel down into the corridor to help them turn off the valve to shut off the gamma cores power supply. When the Hulk puts up resistance, Iron Man loses his patience and explains to the Hulk that if he doesn't do anything he 12 million people will die, this convinces the Hulk to continue on while Iron Man carries Thing and Thor to safety.

With Hulk using all his might he manage to shut down the gamma core, however it causes a build up of psionic energy and Onslaught briefly manifests before vanishing again. With the core shut down the Torch absorbs the remaining heat from the reactor and lets it loose high above Avengers Island in a giant nova-burst. With the battle over and the rain falling, the heroes examine the ruins of Avengers Island, leaving Captain America to believe that the Avengers are done with, however Iron Man has other ideas.

Tony Stark and the Fantastic Four are at the Baxter Building trying to comprehend the transformations of Leonard Samson and Jennifer Walters into gamma irradiated mutates thanks to blood transfusions from the Hulk. Thing's flirtations with She-Hulk leads to a brief battle between him and the hulk before it's broken up by the Invisible Woman. Suddenly the alarms go off alerting Reed Richards of the approaching Heralds of Galactus. Tony recognizes the ship from his recent time travel trip with Dr. Doom earlier but keeps silent as Reed and the other members of the Fantastic Four go off to intercept the coming alien visitors.

Tony spends the alone time to promise the members of the Hulkbusters that he will find a way to cure them, however both She-Hulk and Doc Samson are happy with their new forms. His meeting with them is cut short when he gets a page that brings him to the Ziff Memorial Hospital where Happy Hogan is recovering following his near death experience with Rebel days earlier. Tony arrives to find Pepper Potts by his bed side. Just then Dr. Doom bursts through the wall and takes Tony with him aboard his ship. While back at the Baxter Building while Samson and She-Hulk are watching the FF's battle against the heralds of Galactus, Liz Ross approaches the Hulk. Revealing herself to Hulk causes him to calm down enough to change back into Bruce Banner. Liz explains to him that she is dying of radiation poisoning due to her exposure to the gamma bombs explosion and the two express their true feelings for each other before sharing a kiss.

Aboard Doom's ship, Doom has Tony put on his Iron Man armor, and convinces him that he must help him against Galactus. When Tony refuses to deal with a "tin plated despot" Doom tries to get Tony to remember back to the Onslaught disaster when he forced Doom into sacrificing himself. Not fully remembering this incident confuses Iron Man, however he agrees to help when a hologram of Nick Fury appears telling him that SHIELD is fully cooperating with the monarch.

Boarding the SHIELD helicarrier, Iron Man finds that Fury has gathered both the Avengers and the Hulkbusters to deal with the threat of Galactus. With all the heroes gathered Fury drops a large bombshell on them: The Fantastic Four have been killed by the heralds of Galactus. He then sends them out in teams to stop the heralds from implanting their terraformers into the Earth: He sends Thor and She-Hulk to Attilan to battle Terrax; Namor, Doc Samson, Hawkeye and Captain America to Monster Island to battle Firelord; Wasp, Scarlet Witch and Vision to battle Plasma in Antarctica; and lastly Doom, Iron Man, Ant Man and Bruce Banner would work together to create an ultimate nullifier weapon to try and stop Galactus.

On the battle front, the Scarlet Witch defeat Plasma by using her hex powers to freeze her in a block of ice, while Hawkeye downs Firelord with one of his mystical arrows, and lastly Thor smashes in the skull of Terrax with his uru hammer. As the scientists complete their device, Galactus attacks the SHIELD helicarrier directly, prompting Bruce to transform into the Hulk once again. Doom sends Iron Man, Ant Man and the Hulk out to try their new weapon out against Galactus and watches as they are easily destroyed. As Fury tries to fight back, Dr. Doom attempts one more travel back in time to change history, this time realizing his time machine is damaged and this will be his last chance to try and prevent Galactus from succeeding.

Feeling as though she cannot fit in to the life of being the side kick of a super-hero, Rikki Barnes has returned home to Philadelphia to seek the guidance of her parents. However she arrives to find their home trashed and Dr. Doom, having traveled from the near future there seeking her out. He claims that SHIELD's files identify her as a chronal anomaly and he has come seeking out what it might mean and if it could be used to stop Galactus from destroying the Earth. Before he can coerce the teenage girl to do his bidding Captain America arrives and stops him. Realizing there is no time to lose, Dr. Doom tells Captain America that right now the Fantastic Four are battling the Heralds of Galactus, and if they do not act quickly they will soon be killed in battle.

They arrive in New York City and gather the Avengers and the Hulkbusters and save the Fantastic Four from Terrax, Firelord, Air-Walker and Plasma just in time. Dr. Doom convinces the Fantastic Four to join forces and try and stop Galactus. Meanwhile, the Silver Surfer has joined his master in space and has attempted to ask him not to destroy the Earth, asking instead to find a new planet. Galactus refuses and the Surfer concedes and agrees to return to Earth to warn them of his masters coming.

While at Avengers Mansion, Dr. Doom, Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man, Bruce Banner and Ant Man begin putting their minds together to try and come up with a means to destroy Galactus. Bruce Banner comes up with the craziest idea of all: If Galactus is coming to consume the Earth for its energy, why not give him exactly what he wants.

Elsewhere in the Mansion all the other heroes take the quiet time to socialize and get their minds off the fact that the world may end soon. Bucky however is consumed with thought about her place in everything and wanders outside. There she meets the Silver Surfer who asks her to tell the heroes to find a way to get off the Earth. Bucky refuses and tries to talk the Surfer into betraying Galactus and joining them, the Surfer hesitates and leaves to return to his master. Bucky, not wanting to give up jumps onto the back of the Surfer's surfboard. Cap comes outside to see Bucky's brash action and chases after her on a flying motorcycle. As Cap tries to talk Bucky into letting go, Galactus notices her hitching a ride on the Surfer's board. Finding this an affront Galactus blasts the girl with cosmic eye beams sending her crashing into the water below. The Surfer is mortified at how his master used his vast power on a normal human girl.

Back at the mansion, Reed Richards is explaining that their Ultimate Nullifier is complete however it needs someone to wield it and they will surely die. Captain America enters the room with the wounded Bucky and offers himself up, Iron Man and Thor offer themselves in sacrifice as well. Just then, the Silver Surfer, offers himself for the sacrifice. The heroes wire up the Nullifier to the Silver Surfer and armed with Cap's indestructible shield the Silver Surfer goes out to battle Galactus. With an energy boost from the heroes below the Silver Surfer succeeds in absorbing energy and channeling it back into Galactus causing him to overload, destroying them both in the process. The only thing that survives the blast is Cap's shield which he reclaims. With Galactus destroyed, Reed Richards offers his hand to Dr. Doom in friendship but Doom declines.

Later, Captain America visits the grave of Abraham Wilson at Arlington Cemetery to pay his respects and thank him for bringing Captain America back to the world. He is then greeted by Richard and Peggy Barnes, the grandparents of Bucky. They tell Cap that she is expected to recover and Cap finds that they are familiar. Nick Fury shows up and tells him that he cannot tell them who they are because it's classified information. Fury then confides in Captain America that everything he was told by the Fury LMD was all for the purposes of making him put the uniform back on, but they may not necessarily be true. Cap then rides off into the sunset with the Watcher looking.

Continued from last issue...

Alicia Masters waits patiently for her date, Ben Grimm, to show up when she gets a call from her publicist Cass. Cass tries to convince Alicia that Ben is no good and just a famous super-hero, however Alicia holds onto the fact that Ben must have a good reason for not showing up for their date, like being out saving the world. However, even after finishing her call with Cass, Alicia can't help but doubt a little.

However, Alicia's initial reasoning couldn't be more to the truth, as Ben is with the rest of the Fantastic Four battling the Super-Skrull, an alien who has just absorbed the power of a strange silver alien being that crashed landed on Earth. Now in within Dr. Doom's castle, the FF, Black Panther and Dr. Doom he tells them of his species natural ability to shape-shift.

When Doom attempts to attack him, the Super-Skrull shows off his ultimate power. Reed asks the Super-Skrull to explain what's going on, and the super-powerful alien is more than happy to provide Reed's request: He explains that the silver alien is known as the Silver Surfer, the herald of a planet devouring creature known as Galactus. The Super-Skrull explains that Galactus had devoured the Skrull home world and that he had sought out the Silver Surfer in order to absorb the Heralds power to use against Galactus.

The explanation is interrupted by the approach of SHIELD aircraft come to collect the Surfer but the Super-Skrull destroys them with a force field. This anger the Thing into attack and the rest of the FF and the Black Panther join the fray. Finding that the Super-Skrull is too powerful, Reed agrees to follow Dr. Doom's plan in stopping the Super-Skrull and instructs Sue to use her invisible force field powers to redirect a blast from the Super-Skrull at the Silver Surfer. Although this is too much for Sue's powers to handle it's a success and she manages to free the Surfer.

The Silver Surfer clashes with the Super-Skrull, the massive power threatening to destroy Doom's entire castle if the energy reaches the fusion reactor that powers his nation. The FF, Wyatt Wingfoot and Black Panther all flee, but Doom stays behind to make sure none of his people are killed as a result of the clash, vowing to blame the Fantastic Four if this happens. THe castle explodes leaving the FF to wonder if Doom succeeded however they decide not to wait around and leave.

From the rubble of Doom's castle comes the Silver Surfer, alive and well, who watches as the Fantastic Four leave. The Surfer remarks how this is the first time in a very long time that any being ever showed him compassion.
