Overview

Hideki Tojo was the 40th Prime Minister of Japan from October 17, 1941 to July 22, 1944. He was also a general of the Imperial Japanese Army. During World War II he was directly responsible for many of the military planning including the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 which led to the United States entering the war. Following the end of World War II he was arrested for war crimes and was executed on December 23, 1948.

Hideki Tojo in the Marvel Universe

Unlike other members of the Axis Powers during World War II, Hideki Tojo had very few interactions with the various costumed heroes that were active during the time.

His first recorded encounter occurred when he decided to personally deal with the Sub-Mariner. Taking advice from his adviser Nishki, he had part of the Pacific Ocean outside of Japan flooded with chloroform, knocking the hero out. Tojo then had Namor put on display in a fish tank in the Imperial palace, where he was kept sedated with chloroform tainted water. Tojo then gave Namor a knife to kill himself with "honor" if he saw fit. This proved to be Tojo's undoing as Namor used a decorative diamond on the hilt of the blade to cut through the aquariums glass and escape. Namor then redirected the water of a nearby rice field and set off explosives in the imperial palace before retreating back into the Pacific[1].

Although Tojo made a number of appearances in Timely Comics house ads, pleas to purchase war bonds, comic book covers and titles such as Terry-Toons Comics, Tojo did not full appear in an Earth-616 story until All Winners Comics #11.

As was typical in wartime propaganda, Tojo and the Japanese in general were depicted as being beastly, vampiric creatures, usually drawn with primitive features and comically yellowed skin and slanted eyes.
