History
Hobie Brown is Spider-Punk, the Spider-Totem of his reality, Earth-138B. He resides in London, but is otherwise reluctant to divulge any aspects of his life. He became defined by his rebellious attitude towards absolutely everything, and would take any opportunity to turn on an establishment, regardless of the consequences. At some point, Hobie temporarily quit being Spider-Man, and also had a police captain he was close to die in his arms.
Hobie eventually got recruited into Miguel O'Hara's Spider Society and formed a friendship with Gwen Stacy. The two of them went on almost twenty missions together, during one of which they caught a Prowler Anomaly; Hobie would also let Gwen crash in his dimension, where she keeps a sweater and a toothbrush as well as letting her into his band as his drummer.[1]
Hobie arrived on Earth-50101B to assist Gwen, her friend Miles Morales (who jealously assumed that Gwen and Hobie were dating) and the local Spider-Man Pavitr Prabhakar against the Spot who was activating Alchemax's supercollider. Hobie used the power of rock to break through the forcefield that prevented the other from reaching Spot and engaged him alongside them. After expressing his delight at seeing varions different Spider-People, Spot jumped into supercollider and the Spiders were unable to stop him. Spot then departed this reality, but the explosion caused the section of the building to collapse onto the streets. Hobie and the others jumped in, with Pavitr and Miles clearing the civilians while Hobie and Gwen were trying to slow the falling debris. In the end they were able to land the thing with no civilian casualties, but then Jessica Drew arrived with a Spider-Team and ordered everyone except Pavitr to report to the HQ.[1]
Hobie accompanied Miles as Gwen was showing him around the Spider Society on Miguel's Earth-928. However when Miguel revealed that Miles' father Jeff was about to die in two days and Miles was not allowed to save him, Hobie was the only one out of all Spider-People present who did not approve (if largely to remain in line with his rebellious attitude). When Miguel trapped Miles in a force cage, Hobie showed Miles to break out, and when every other Spider gave chase after Miles, Hobie went back to his Earth, stating that he was quitting the Spider Society.[1]
Back home, Hobie constructed his own Dimensional Travel Watch from materials stolen at Miguel's lab and popped over to Gwen's Earth-65, leaving her one as well in case things didn't work out. Gwen later used this watch to recruit Hobie into her own Spider-Band with which she was going to track down and rescue Miles.[1]Notes
- Daniel Kaluuya voices Spider-Punk in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and will reprise the role in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
- Kaluuya previously portrayed W'Kabi in Black Panther.
- Although Hobie's home reality is not revealed in the movie, it cannot be the Earth-138 as shown in the Spider-Punk comics due to the differences in their portrayal: Hobie from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is unmistakably British living in London while Hobie from the comics is unmistakably American living in New York City. Since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also designates the home reality of Peter B. Parker as "Earth-616B" and the home reality of Ultimate Tarantula as "Earth-1610A", by the same naming conventions Hobie's reality can be conjecturally classified as Earth-138B.
- Spider-Punk's height was listed as 6'5" on his Tastykake collectible card made as promotional material for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. However, because the cards also listed Spot's reality as Earth-616 and Jessica Drew's reality as Earth-404, their overall accuracy is dubious.
