The House of Ideas is the core of all of reality, and the birthplace of all that was, all that is, and all that yet may be.[1] It is the dwelling space of the One Above All, the ultimate creator of everything, and within this place, infinite stories are born; ideas can take physical shape.[2]
The House of Ideas has many entry points. One is located on Earth due to humanity being essential to the One Above All's designs, and is manifested as a suburban residence in Hewlett Harbor, Long Island.[2] The House's true location is in the Mystery outside the Multiverse.[5][3]
History
The Fantastic Four entered the House of Ideas[3] after the Thing's death. They met the One Above All who brought the Thing back to life and healed Reed Richards' face.[4]
After the Olympian goddess of the night Nyx regained her godhood from the shattered pieces of her soul, she managed to pinpoint the Long Island entry point of the House of Ideas. Realizing that the House of Ideas was the birthplace of everything, she planned to claim it for herself and remake the Multiverse in her image, plunging all of creation into eternal night. Her efforts were opposed by a ragtag team of heroes composed of Hercules, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Spectrum, Hawkeye, Rocket Raccoon, Conan the Cimmerian, the Hulk, and Voyager. Most of the heroes were either repelled or seemingly disintegrated by the power of the House, with only Vision managing to make it through the door.[1] Inside the blank void within the house, Vision confronted Nyx. He combined his internal database which contained the Avengers' files with the power of the House to imagine into existence a myriad of super heroes. This manifestation of the light of the human spirit pushed back against Nyx, weakening her until Vision, engulfed by this light's fire, burned the Queen of Nights to ash. Following Nyx's defeat, Vision exited the House.[2]
Later, a time-displaced Loki and the Defenders entered the House of Ideas after a long journey into the Mystery. They met the One Above All and were shown Eternity's enemy: the "Enigma" to come. Afterwards, Loki debated whether to completely liberate himself from the Multiverse or to go back inside. The Beyonder chose the former and freed himself from everything. Loki and the others went back inside the Multiverse.[3]Residents
Notes
- A place called the "House of Ideas" shows up in Loki (Vol. 3) #2–3 that contains a large library filled with the books of various heroes. Two of Eternity's children, Now and Then, supposedly dwell there.
- However, that place is directly retconned to not be the real House of Ideas in Defenders: Beyond #5. A time-displaced Loki from the Seventh Cosmos goes to the real House of Ideas, while the future Loki from the Eighth Cosmos "never gets here. He gets to see a version of it--a glimpse, a suggestion, as bait for a trap." The back of the issue states that he was tricked by Now and Then.
Trivia
- The House of Ideas is named after Marvel Comics' popular moniker.
- The vehicle parked outside the House of Ideas on Long Island had a licence plate that read SML JKK,[1] the initials of Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) and Jack "King" Kirby.
- Stan Lee used to live in Hewlett Harbor. Jack Kirby also lived nearby. In fact, Long Island was and still is home to many key people who worked on Marvel Comics.[6]
- When Nyx opened the door to the House of Ideas, Bruce Banner screams that he cannot be there as it is "holy ground."[1]
- In Defenders: Beyond #5, the House of Ideas is associated with Kether. In Immortal Hulk #10–11, the Below-Place is associated with Thaumiel, its opposite.
- In the "The Assembly" behind-the-scenes segment of Avengers No Road Home #9, one of the ideas that did not make the cut for the miniseries was to establish that the Scarlet Witch is the only mortal connected to the House of Ideas. When asked what happened to this idea on Twitter, Jim Zub replied that it was not crucial to the story.[7]
