History
During the launch of Project Rebirth, Dr. Abraham Erskine offered Agent Carter to proceed to the viewing booth, but she elected to stay in the room for the procedure, leading others present for observation to do the same. This caused Nazi spy Heinz Kruger to detonate his explosive device earlier, before Steve Rogers' procedure was performed. Kruger managed to kill both Doctor Erskine and the SSR head Colonel Phillips, while also wounding Rogers. Kruger then tried to escape with a vial of Super-Soldier Serum, but was shot and killed by Agent Carter. Colonel Flynn tried to salvage the project by having Howard go inside the Vita-Ray Chamber, but he refused, and with no time remaining, Peggy jumped in instead to undergo the procedure herself.[1]
Flynn succeeded Phillips as the head of SSR and was asked by Stark and Carter to authorize a mission to recover the Tesseract in Berlin, which Flynn denied to them. Going behind Flynn's back, Stark made a uniform and a Vibranium shield for Peggy, who as "Captain Carter" went on the mission herself, capturing Hydra scientist Arnim Zola and bringing the Tesseract back to Allied forces. Stark used it to power his latest invention - the Hydra Stomper Armor, which was piloted by Steve Rogers.[1]
Near the end of the war, Captain Carter, Hydra Stomper, and the Howling Commandos went on a mission to capture Hydra leader Johann Schmidt, but were lured into a trap, and Rogers along with Hydra Stomper Armor were presumed lost. Carter led the Howling Commandos on a final decisive strike against Hydra's base at Castle de Krake, taking Howard along despite his protests. Rogers was found alive, but Schmidt had obtained the Tesseract and used it to summon an interdimensional monster through a portal. Carter ordered Stark to close the portal, which he had some difficulty with due to the control labels being in German. However, the monster prevented the portal from closing and Peggy sacrificed herself to push it back inside, enabling Stark to close the portal for good.[1]Notes
- Dominic Cooper provided the voice of Howard Stark in the What If...? episode "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?".
