Synopsis for "Hulk and Captain America"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Incredible Hulk #232
(originally printed as The Battle Below)

This story is continued from Captain America #230...

Deep within Alcatraz Prison, the Corporation has just defeated the Hulk, Captain America, Marvel Man, and the Falcon. Moonstone and Animus have succeeded in knocking out three of the heroes while the Falcon is chained to the floodgate. The Mid-Atlantic head of the Corporation, Eugene Kligger Stivak offers the pacific head, Curtiss Jackson a trade: he offers to turn over Jim Wilson to Jackson in exchange for Captain America. As the negotiations begin, Captain America quits playing possum and tries to make his move. Moonstone spots him and blasts Cap into the water.

Thinking that Captain America is dead, Jim Wilson kicks at Kligger, but the boy is slapped aside. This angers the Hulk who has also just woken up. First, he grabs Moonstone and throws her against a wall. That's when Animus steps in and hits the Hulk with a mental blast. The Hulk is hardly phased by this and attacks Animus. In the waters below, Captain America rises to the surface. Getting knocked into the water was his plan all along and he uses the battle above to cover his attempt to free the Falcon before they drown. He cuts through the chains binding his partner, and they both swim to an outflow where they can recover from their ordeals.

Meanwhile, the battle between the Hulk and Animus rages on. When the Hulk proves too much of a match for Animus, the creature uses its mental powers to cause the ground beneath the Hulk to fold up onto him. Kligger then goes back to dealing with Jackson, who is less than impressed with what is going on, but decides to talk about a deal. However, before they can begin, Captain America and the Falcon return. When Moonstone tries to fight back, she is blasted by a recovered Marvel Man. By this point the Hulk has finally broken free and is angrier than ever before.

Seeing this as a losing battle, Moonstone decides to take her leave. Animus, however, resumes its attack on the Hulk. Tired of being struck by his opponents crystalline club, the Hulk grabs it and crushes it. This causes enough feedback that causes Animus to revert back to its female form, the Vamp. With the heroes surrounding Kligger, he tells Jackson to do his duty. Jackson agrees and activates some automatic weapons that shoot Kligger dead. As Captain America and Falcon pull Jim to safety, the Hulk jumps at the display window where Jackson is watching. As the Hulk tries to smash his way in, Jackson activate a pneumatic escape hatch. The Hulk follows after him into the deep of San Francisco Bay. Back inside the prison, Jim is elated at the fact that his uncle is the Falcon. Meanwhile, Captain America grimly assesses the fact that yet another corrupt politician has abused his power during his career. However, this time Captain America knows that for the country he loves he has to accept the good as well as the bad.

Synopsis for "Ant-Man"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Tales to Astonish #48
(originally printed as The Porcupine!)

Streaking off on another adventure, Ant-Man points out to the Wasp the location of a local army ordnance plant. Inside the plant we meet Alex Gentry, a scientist who works for the ordinance plant. Having designed combat armor based on the quills of a porcupine, he has become frustrated with the lack of recognition and pay that he receives from the military for his inventions. Seeking fortune, he decides to use his porcupine armor to rob a new bank that has opened that has been boasting a burglar proof safe in the newspapers.

The next day, Ant-Man and Wasp (in their civilian guises of Henry Pym and Janet Van Dyne) visit the bank to see a demonstration of the bank vault. Pym notices that Janet is coming down with a cold and tries to talk her into going home, which she refuses. Just then, Gentry (in his combat armor and calling himself "The Porcupine") arrives and uses his liquid cement quills to disarm the guards and then fills the room with sleeping gas. As Pym tries to drag Janet out of the sleeping gas, the Porcupine uses a built in acetylene torch to burn through the vault. While our two heroes seek refuge and fresh air in one of the bank's offices, the Porcupine manages to steal the bank's money and uses his jet pack to escape. Donning their guises of Ant-Man and the Wasp, the two heroes find that they are too late. When the Wasp starts to get really dizzy, Ant-Man takes her home and confines her to a bed, telling her not to leave it until she gets better.

Meanwhile, the Porcupine robs another bank, which allows Ant-Man's spy-ants to track his movements. Learning that the Porcupine is hiding out at the military ordnance plant, Ant-Man travels there alone to confront his foe. Getting into Gentry's lab, Ant-Man is easily taken down by the traps that the Porcupine had set up for him. Removing Ant-Man's control helmet, the Porcupine leaves Ant-Man to drown in a filled bathtub while he commits another crime.

Worrying about Pym, Janet learns where Ant-Man had gone from the ants and resumes her guise of the Wasp to rescue him. The two devise a trap using one of the Porcupine's own gimmicks: liquid cement.

Taking a bunch of containers of the compound and putting them in bags, the two heroes wait for the villain to return. When the Porcupine finally arrives, they have their ants squeeze the bags, shooting jets of liquid cement that coats the Porcupine's quills with the glue, rendering his offensive capabilities useless. Finding himself overwhelmed by Ant-Man's human-sized strength the Porcupine manages to escape via his jet pack (which wasn't affected by the glue).

Taking the visibly distraught Wasp home (she was afraid that he would've drowned), Ant-Man promises to have something for her when they get there, but what Janet figures might be a monetary gift of jewelry or a ring, turns out to be plain old cough medicine. "Henry Pym, I HATE you!"
