Synopsis for "Incredible Hulk"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Incredible Hulk #236
(originally printed as Kill or Be Killed!)
Curtiss Jackson has tricked the Hulk into attacking Machine Man by convincing the brute that the robot had kidnapped his friend Trish Starr. Thinking that he destroyed Machine Man, the Hulk makes it way toward the home the robot shares with Dr. Peter Spaulding, unaware that Machine Man has begun reassembling himself and preparing to attack from behind. Machine Man manages to get the drop on the Hulk, wrapping one of his expandable arms around the brute's back.

Inside, Peter Spaulding watches the battle from the window while the Hulk's ally, Fred Sloan holds him at gunpoint. Sloan demands answers and threatens to shoot the psychologist, however, Peter knows that what Fred is holding is merely a model of a gun. Taking the prop from Fred's hand, Peter demands to know what's going on. Fred explains how he and the Hulk believe that Machine Man kidnapped their friend with the help of the Corporation. Spaulding has had his own experience with the Corporation and explains how they were tricked and rushes to a phone to get some help. Just then, the Hulk and Machine Man come crashing through the wall. As the two combatants come crashing through the house, Peter decides they need to get out and find Colonel Kragg for help. Both he and Fred hop into a car and drive away. Seeing his friend leave, the Hulk tries to follow after them, but Machine Man pulls him back into battle.

As the battle rages on, the man the Corporation put in place to watch the battle reports to Curtiss Jackson. Pleased to hear the news, Jackson gets a pair of special binoculars that will allow him to see the battle from the top of the Corporation's office tower. His prisoner, Trish Starr, asks him how he can get off on murder. Jackson explains that he doesn't view this as murder, just business efficiency since both Machine Man and the Hulk have interfered with the progress of the Corporation. When Trish asks if she will be killed after this, Curtiss tells her that she is resourceful enough that she can have other uses.

As the battle continues, the Machine Man and the Hulk's fight expands from the home shared with Spaulding to the middle of Central City. At that point Fred and Peter manage to reach Colonel Kragg and tells him how the Hulk was tricked by the Corporation to fight Machine Man. At the same time, Machine Man also discovers the truth when he picks up the radio broadcast by the man hired to spy on them. Machine Man pulls the Corporation stooge out of his milk truck and tosses him into a nearby swimming pool. Disguising his voice, Machine Man begins reporting in, posing as the Corporation's man. Meanwhile, the Hulk pulls himself out of a crater made by his fall. Spotting some internal power lines he remembers how they were once used against him and decides to do the same to Machine Man. However, he is unaware that the battle has also unearthed a gas main, and that it has also has a leak. The Hulk then ambushes Machine Man, ramming the live wires into the robot, causing a huge power surge. This combined with the gas leak causes a massive explosion that engulfs both comatants.

Synopsis for "Silver Surfer"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Silver Surfer #1
(originally printed as Origin of the Silver Surfer!)
Brief Summary:

Growing tired of his banishment on Earth, the Silver Surfer thinks back to the days before he became Galacuts' herald. He was Norrin Radd of Zenn-La and, while he loved Shalla-Bal, he was growing restless on his planet. The Zenn-Lavians' lives were complacent, not looking to discover more about the universe around them. Norrin Radd was not happy with this fact and when Galactus appeared he saw this as his chance to save his planet and seek a new life. Galactus made him his herald and he became the Silver Surfer. The planet was saved, a new life was won, but his old life and love had to be left behind.

Silver Surfer Vol 1 1 page 1

Detailed Summary:
As the Silver Surfer is flying over the Earth, he spots a space capsule crashing into the ocean. He finds the craft at the bottom of the ocean, blasts open the door, and brings the unconscious Col. John Jameson out of the water and safely on to a nearby aircraft carrier. The servicemen think that the Surfer is a threat and jets are sent after him. He easily speeds away from them, as well as the Russian and Chinese missiles that are shot at him as he passes over their countries.

Tired of being banished on Earth, the Surfer longs to be able to return to his home planet Zenn-La. He remembers Zenn-La, an advanced planet that had achieved perfection through their technology. All war, crime, and illness had been eradicated. Before he was the Silver Surfer, he was Norrin Radd. While most of his fellow citizens were happy with their life on this nirvana, Norrin was bored and restless.

Back to present, the Surfer runs into a group of Yetis that instantly attack him. Instead of fighting back and hurting them, he distracts them with his surfboard and escapes unnoticed. This attack reminds of his first encounters with the Hulk and Doctor Doom. Both attacked him in the past even though he approached them as friends. He comes across the ruins of a once prosperous city and only finds desolation. This scene reminds of his last days on Zenn-La.

Norrin was with his beloved, Shalla-Bal, when the citizens' alarm sounded and an announcement was made. A gigantic alien spacecraft was headed for Zenn-La and the planet, being peaceful, had little left to defend itself from this potentially hostile stranger. Zenn-La's only option was to use the Weapon Supreme, a weapon so powerful that it destroyed much of the planet's buildings when it was fired at the approaching spacecraft. Unfortunately, the alien ship took refuge in the fourth dimension as the weapon was being fired and only the planet itself suffered from using it.

While most Zenn-Lavians felt all was lost, Norrin was determined to try and save his planet. He found a member of the council of scientists and had him build Norrin a spaceship that could reach the alien spacecraft. He arrived at the spacecraft to meet Galactus, devourer of worlds! Norrin made a deal with Galactus to save Zenn-La. He agreed and became the Silver Surfer, Herald of Galactus. While Zenn-La would survive, Norrin must leave and help find other planets for Galactus to eat for the rest of his life. He bid farewell to Shalla-Bal and soared off into space, all alone.

The Surfer started off by finding Galactus only planets that were free of living creatures for him to eat. But as the years went by, his vigilance to save innocent life faltered and he lead Galactus to Earth. He soon regretted this decision and fought back with the Fantastic Four to prevent the planet from being eaten. Galactus agreed to leave Earth but banished the Surfer to the planet, no longer able to roam the galaxies. Tired of this hostile planet and missing outer space, the Silver Surfer wonders where his destiny lies.

Synopsis for "The Defenders"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Defenders #42
(originally printed as "And in This Corner: The New Emissaries of Evil!")
During a meeting of the Defenders at Dr. Strange's sanctum, they are attacked by Solarr and Rhino, members of Egghead's Emissaries of Evil, who have come to collect the jewel known as the Star of Capistan. While the two villains have the advantage of surprise, the regrouping Defenders manage to over power them forcing the two to retreat when they realize the Defenders don't have the Star, nor know what it is.

Transported to Egghead's space station, Egghead is furious that the attack fail, and more importantly that his calculations that Strange would have the jewel were incorrect, he punishes his two hirelings and begins planning anew. Back on Earth, the Defenders take Nighthawk to the hospital to treat his burns sustained in battle. There Dr. Strange is visited by his old friend Omar Karindu who has brought him the Star of Capistan, however upon showing it to Strange, the doctor is mesmerized by it.

While elsewhere in the city, Egghead's next agent, the recently revived Cobalt Man attacks the Defenders, however during the battle the Cobalt man begins reaching critical mass, threatening to explode right in the middle of New York City.
