Incredible Hulk #231
(originally printed as Prelude!)

In the early hours in the morning the Hulk wanders into the town of Gilbert, California. He passes a by a local bar, patron Fred Sloan is tossed out by the bar's owner. Confusing the bartender with a soldier, the Hulk attacks the man. Sloan goes back into the bar and tells people to stop messing with him or his friend will deal with them. The sight of the Hulk sends all the patrons of the bar fleeing into the night. When the Hulk tries to wander off, Fred convinces the Hulk that they are friends and offers to let the brute stay the night at his house.

The following day at Gamma Base, the staff greets the arrivals of Senator Eugene Stivak and Senator Andrew Hawk. Hawk is unimpressed with the way that Doc Samson has been running Gamma Base since General Ross had his nervous breakdown. Although Hawk has taken a hard line on shaking things up, Stivak seems more agreeable and willing to work with Samson. During a meeting with Samson, SHIELD officer Clay Quartermain, and Karla Sofen, they discuss the future of Gamma Base. Samson admits that he hasn't done well running the facility so far, but states that he never wanted the job to begin with. During the discussion, Stivak uses key phrases that tip Sofen off that he is a member of the Corporation, the same organization that she works for. She wonders what is going on and what to do.

Meanwhile, it's daytime in California and the Hulk has woken up in the home of Fred Sloan. He is drawn into the kitchen by smell of cooking. There he puts a fright into Fred's girlfriend, her shrieks wake Fred up. Sloan tries to convince her that the Hulk is safe but the woman flees. Soon the authorities are on their way and when Fred hears their sirens wailing, he convinces the Hulk to load up into his van and they flee the scene.

The Hulk's activities soon reach Gamma Base and Jim Wilson inerrupts the the meetings with the Senators to pass it along. While Hawk is unimpressed that a young boy is on the site of the base, they explain that he is a friend of the Hulk and can help them try and contain the monster. Stivak then suggests that he, Sofen and Jim Wilson venture out to California to try and contain the Hulk. Jim is concerned about this idea as he had recently fled California. His fears are confirmed aboard Stivak's jet when he reveals his affiliation with the Corporation, the very people Jim had fled from. When Jim tries to do something he is gassed.

While in California, Fred and the Hulk come upon a police blockaide. Fred tries to convince the Hulk to keep cool and disguises him. However, this fails when an officer tries to search the car. The Hulk loses his cool and trashes the cordon, sending the police fleeing. The Hulk gets back into the car, and they continue onward, fugitives of the law.

Synopsis for "Ant-Man!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Tales to Astonish #39
(originally printed as The Vengeance of the Scarlet Beetle!)

Receiving emergency impulses on his devices from his ants, Ant-Man decides to investigate what appears to be problems in the insect world. There he finds an irradiated beetle, able to communicate telepathically. The Scarlet Beetle, mutated by exposure to radiation, plans to destroy the human race with the help of all the insects in his thrall (beetles, wasps, grasshoppers, etc.).

Seeing Ant-Man as a potential obstacle in this plot, Scarlet Beetle orders his insects to capture him, remove his helmet and toss him in a pit that he cannot climb out himself. Stealing Ant-Man's size-changing gas, the Scarlet Beetle exposes itself to Ant-Man's growth gas and grows to human size. He then orders the insects on a campaign of terror, attacking humanity at all levels: knocking down hydro poles, stealing dynamite, and striking people ill with spider bites.

Meanwhile, although not on Ant-Man's head, his helmet sends out a signal that alerts his ants of his location. The ants arrive and help Ant-Man out of the pit. Regaining his helmet, he and his army of ants face off against the Scarlet Beetle's army of assorted insects, defeating them with honey, a water fountain and DDT spray.

Furious that his army was so easily defeated, the Scarlet Beetle is goaded into chasing Ant-Man into a nearby toy store. Inside Ant-Man manages to fight off the Scarlet Beetle long enough to secure a javelin from a toy knight and use it to pierce the shrinking gas canister that the Beetle wore around its body. Exposed to the gas once more, the Scarlet Beetle reduces back to his original size and is easily defeated by Ant-Man who traps the Beetle inside a deflated balloon.

The Scarlet Beetle, decontaminated of radiation, resumes its normal intelligence and abilities. Hank Pym releases it back into his back yard.

Nick Fury is back in New York City after liberating the country of San Miguel from the tyranny of the terrorist organization known as the Sept. On his way to Laura Brown's house for a date, he is unaware that a sniper is following him. As he enters Larua's apartment building, he doesn't hear a shot fired at him due to the music playing in the lobby. He meets with Laura and as they walk out of the building, he fills her in on what happened in San Miguel. As they are on their way out when Fury notices the bullet hole in the front door.

Laura pauses at a phone booth because she has to make a phone call. While she isn't looking the sniper takes another shot and misses. This time Fury notices it, Fury tells her that she can make a call from his car. As they drive off, Laura notices that Nick is tense, especially after he begins detailing how Carl Pallis, a Sept double agent, managed to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D. She decides that instead of going out to Del-Rio's for supper, they should get hamburgers instead. Fury grudgingly gives in. The pair get the burgers from a roadside stand. On his way back to the car, Fury spots the sniper.

Getting into his vehicle, Fury then distracts Laura with a kiss, and while she isn't looking he pulls a silenced pistol out from the back seat and manages to shoot the sniper dead. As they drive away, Fury decides that perhaps it's time to investigate what Sept might be doing in Cairo.
