History

The Mobile Base was a technology developed by the neo-Nazi terrorist organization Hydra for use in their criminal activities[1] shortly after the resurrection of Hydra's leader, Baron Strucker.[3][4] It was a huge maritime battle station of excellent quality, well-armed and with multiple rooms that could be monitored and altered from the bridge.[1]

Dmitri Petrovich, who had defected from Hydra to join the splinter group Genesis Coalition,[5] stole a Hydra Mobile Base for use by the Genesis Coalition in an operation in the Mediterranean Sea[1] in which they attempted to capture Mount Wundagore, in Transia, to use it as their permanent powerbase.[2] To this end, the leaders of the Coalition, Fritz Sablinov[6] and Ivan Trefkov,[7] occupied the Base bridge. By then, the Genesis Coalition had purchased Cyberwarriors, mindless weaponized cyborgs, to use in the planned attack on Wundagore, and kept them at the Mobile Base while programming them.[1]

The Mobile Base was detected by two Coalition enemies: Silver Sable and Baron Strucker.[1] Strucker had his minion Cassandra hire a group of mercenaries to recover the stolen base and punish the Coalition traitors;[1][8] she chose Next Wave.[1][9][10][11] Sable prepared her own mercenary group, Wild Pack, to attack the base. Sable's plan was to approach the Base in a Stealthcraft, which would undoubtedly be detected and shot down; but the group would abandon the vehicle before its destruction, so that they would be left for dead. The Wild Pack would then be joined by his contact, oceanographer superhero Stingray, who would take them to the base in his cloaked submarine. When they disembarked from the submarine, however, they were detected and attacked by the Coalition's underwater stormtroopers; Sable theorized that the Coalition had not identified them, because if they had, they would have sent more powerful agents. Defeating the troopers, the Pack managed to enter the Base by moving to the area that the Base had on the surface, overpowering some guards, and then Pack member Quentino used technology to open a hole in the hull, which allowed them to enter.[1]

Meanwhile, Next Wave was also infiltrating: Next Wave member Snare broke the hull in Sector 96 of the Mobile Base by firing his rifle much more impulsively, and causing a suction that introduced them to the Base; they only survived thanks to the force field of Next Wave leader Agent X, and ended up in the same area of the Base where the Wild Pack was. Due to the hasty nature of the operation, Next Wave were quickly detected by the Coalition. Petrovich ordered to seal the subsections and send a squad of Cyberwarriors to eliminate the intruders. At Trefkov's suggestion, they also flooded the area by having the Base submerge a hundred feet, so that the intruders would drown while the Cyberwarriors, who did not need to breathe, could take care of them.[1] Meanwhile, the Base began to move under the Mediterranean Sea, and Petrovich and Trefkov chose to evacuate to coordinate the Transia operation,[2] while Sablinova stayed[1] to try to scare away Sable,[2] who was her niece.[7]

The Wild Pack and Next Wave presented a common front against the Cyberwarriors, although Sable considered the Next Wave an especially undisciplined group (still, Next Wave member Fin impressed her with super strength). Snare broke the hull several more times, worsening the flooding, while Quentino discovered that thirty more Cyberwarriors were being launched from Level 4D. Finally, Pack member Battlestar managed to open an exit, allowing the Wild Pack to escape the imminent danger. Sablinova, wearing armor that concealed her identity, attempted to convince Sable to abandon this mission, but she decided to turn a deaf ear. The Wild Pack escaped from the Mobile Base in another Stealthcraft and tracked the Cyberwarriors to Transia. Later, Next Wave also left the base.[2]

Apparently the Mobile Base was not recovered: Strucker was particularly angry at the failure of Next Wave, and decided to punish Cassandra for hiring them.[8] The damage suffered to the Base seemed to be restricted to only a part of it,[2] but when they reappeared, the Genesis Coalition had moved to an underground base elsewhere.[12] It is unclear why they did not continue using the Mobile Base, nor where it currently is.

Capabilities

The specific capabilities of the Mobile Base have not been fully revealed.[1]

The Mobile Base had a security system equipped with artillery to defend against large scale attacks; its cannons could take down even an attack vehicle like the Wild Pack's Stealthcraft. To prevent commando incursions, the base had a radar so advanced that it could detect 3-inch fish at 4 nautical miles (although there were cloaking technologies that allowed this sensor to escape; and even when they detected something, they did not immediately identify it)[1]. The base did not offer a way to prevent these incursions, but it did allow teams of guards to roam inside and outside. In the event that an intruder could breach the hull to infiltrate, the anomaly was detected immediately and could be neutralized in several ways. Each section of the base could be sealed, preventing access to others, and for example could be flooded.[1] The Mobile Base computer was susceptible to being hacked from within the Base, in order to find out what was happening, but apparently the orders given from the bridge could not be easily overridden.[2]
