History

Hylas was the son of Theiodamas, king of the Dryopians.[1]

When Hercules killed his father, he spared the boy due to his great beauty which bewitched all who looked upon him, and made him his companion and arms-bearer.[1]

In 1289 B.C., he accompanied him and the Argonauts during the Quest for the Golden Fleece, sailing off the coast of Mysia where he was abducted by water nymphs and lost to Hercules forever. Hercules refused to stop searching for him, and so was left behind by the Argonauts.[1]

Only after Hercules' death and apotheosis would he learn what really happened to Hylas. Then and there, though, it was if the earth had simply swallowed him up.[1]
