In 1941, the mad scientist Dr. Igor Korbeau had invented a device that could remove the soul from the human body, making the still living victim his slave. Once completing he device, he would use it against Dr. Zadig his greatest foe in the scientific community. He would use Zadig to lure more prominent scientists to come and be converted into his slaves. Korbeau sent his army of slaves to steal equipment and murder all those who stood in his path so that he could continue and expand his operations. His activities would attract the attention of the extra-dimensional Vision who considered the practice an effrontery to the natural order. Korbeau would seemingly slay the Vision by throwing a jar of poison gas on the hero before resuming his work.
The Vision would survive the attack and restore the souls of those who Korbeau converted, by travelling to the afterlife to retrieve them. Returning to Earth, the Vision would prevent Korbeau from turning the chief of police into one of his soulless thralls. During the fight the police chief was fatally shot and the Vision injected with a tranquilizer administered by Korbeau.
Korbeau would attempt to run the same process on the Vision, but the hero would break free and in the ensuing struggle, tossed the scientist out of a window sending him falling to his death.
Korbeau was a skilled scientist and an inventive genius, all be it a mad one.
Korbeau invented a device that could separate the soul from the body without killing it. Those who lost their souls from being exposed to the machine would become Korbeau's slaves. They would retain their intelligence, but would be compelled to do Korbeau's bidding. He also had access to various lethal gasses and tranquilizers.
Korbeau armed himself with a pistol.
