History

When A.I.M. allied themselves with Roxxon in a bid to take over Stark Unlimited, Justine Hammer devised a plan to infect Tony Stark's entire network with a magic-infused virus that compromised almost his entire armory. Working fast with whatever components he could salvage from it, Stark jerry-rigged the Improvised Armor to continue fighting the combined forces of A.I.M. and Roxxon.[1]

Properties

Overview[]

The Improvised Armor originated as a crude iteration of the Iron Man Armor with decreased functionality. Although it possessed the standard abilities of a regular Iron Man Armor, namely flight, enhanced strength, increased durability and repulsor blasts, it initially lacked portions of exterior plating and many secondary functions, like climate controls. The suit also needed multiple external generators to recharge, and included a digital gauge of energy levels installed on its left wrist.[3] The suit's on-board computer included comms systems,[4] but in lieu of a proper AI assistant, it is equipped with a chatbot called Iron.GPT which is prone to hallucinating.[1]

Following his acquisition of the Iron Monger Armor, Tony Stark upgraded the Improvised Armor by seemingly retrofitting a portion of the Iron Monger's components into it.[5]

Offensive Powers[]

The armor greatly enhances its user's strength, allowing Tony Stark to catch and carry a minivan and even tackle the Iron Monger into the air.[3] Repulsors were initially malfunctional due to a misrouting issue,[1] but were fixed since then.[6] They feature the conventional firepower of standard repulsors and a potent unibeam.[7] The armor can also release an electrical discharge.[5]

The suit's biggest weapon is the Repulsword,[6] a massive protractible sword made out of retractable steel plating connected by plastic flexors, salvaged from an exploded Roxxon oil pipeline.[1] The Repulsword can be used to channel repulsor energy for a variety of uses, including long-distance discharges, slashing strikes,[3] and barrages.[6]

Defensive Powers[]

Although self-admittedly Tony Stark's least protective armor,[4] the Improvised Armor was still capable of offering protection from a pummeling of energy blasts[6] and machine gun fire with only mild discomfort.[4] The armor can also generate holographic shields to block rifle fire.[7] The Repulsword can also be used as a shield,[3] and it is capable of deflecting the Power Cosmic.[5]

Notes

  • The numerical designation provided in this article for this suit is tentative, based on the last officially numbered armor (Model 73) and the chronological appearance of this suit.
  • The Improvised Armor was first unveiled on July 17, 2024, when Iron Man (Vol. 7) was announced.[8]

Trivia

  • The main visual inspiration behind this armor is steampunk. Iron Man (Vol. 7) writer Spencer Ackerman cited crust punk as one of the suit's earliest inspirations in the way he described it, but commented that artist Julius Ohta put forward a steampunk aesthetic. The design that Ohta came up with prompted Ackerman to revise his story to better accommodate the narrative around it.[9]
  • The Improvised Armor's trademark sword was a design element brought up by Ohta, which wasn't originally featured in Ackerman's pitch for the book. When Ohta requested it, Ackerman gladly accommodated the story to find a way to integrate the sword into it.[10]

Spencer Ackerman (58:43): "[Steampunk] is exactly the vibe we were trying to give. There were a lot of different iterations of [the Improvised Armor]. I had been going a little bit more crust punk in the way that I had described it. Julius came back with steampunk. And everyone involved as just like, 'That's better. That's a much better idea.' It also makes a lot more sense. A billionaire is never going to be confused with a crusty. So, Julius came up with a design that was so good it made me kinda go back and revise a little and be like, 'There's story in this design, and it's my job to kinda pull it down from the heavens.'"

Spencer Ackerman (01:02:28): "[Julius Ohta] requested a specific and very off-the-wall visual element for Iron Man that we've never ever seen in an Iron Man series and it was not part of my original pitch for the book. And when he said it I was just like, 'Done. Give me forty-eight hours, I will figure out a way to make this work for the story.' And now it's gonna be something that runs through the entire series, however long that's gonna be, we're gonna keep this element with it. It's hinted at in the armor design that Marvel released. You'll see it on the page in issue #2."
