Synopsis for "The Machinery of Order - Part One: Hellman Circle"

A police van pulls up outside a diner in Chicago, where an armed militia rounds up everyone inside. Witnessing the abduction by chance, Xavier King tries to flee but is pursued by one of the assailants. As the van speeds away, his attacker declares that the city now belongs to The Heat.

In Santa Monica, Ironheart and her AI N.A.T.A.L.I.E., assist Iron Man at his laboratory in analyzing the Iron Monger Armor, which has been deployed from its containment brooch. Despite being stripped of its Mysterium, the suit appears in pristine condition. Acknowledging their lack of expertise in magic, Tony brings in the Scarlet Witch, who teleports into the scene. Using a ritual circle, Wanda taps into the brooch's energy and is momentarily transported into a vision where she battles humanoid slimes that merge into a giant Iron Man. Jolted back to reality, she warns Tony that the magic within the brooch is far more dangerous than anything Belasco could control, let alone Tony. As Ironheart is returning with takeout, Wanda explains that the mysterium had been stabilizing the armor's dark energy flow. She deduces that wearing the suit would activate its magic, and Tony assures her he has no plans to put it on. Conjuring a portal to returns to Darcy Lewis at The Emporium, the Scarlet Witch warns Tony one more time against wearing the suit.

Later, as Tony and Riri eat dinner in front of a screen running diagnostics, Riri has a breakthrough. She connects the Iron Monger to Tony's servers, which begins purging the magic worm's infection. Having been sent the diagnostics for screening by N.A.T.A.L.I.E., Wanda sends Tony a text message approving the idea, comparing it to magnets reversing polarity. Riri notices the Monger can connect through all but one Stark facility, one which asks for S.H.I.E.L.D. credentials. The duo visits Melinda May at her office as she packs up, still bitter over being pushed off the board despite opposing the merger. Since Tony doesn't recall the details of the blocked facility, May explains that he originally set it up as a fast-track purchasing back door to integrate his tech into S.H.I.E.L.D. during his tenure as director, and someone still has access to it. When Riri presents Melinda with files on its recent activity, May urges them to follow her.

In Southern California, the trio stakes out the facility, discovering a small logistics ring being run by Kara Lynn Palamas, the former Agent 33, who Melinda explains founded a private security company following S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fall. As May leads the assault, Iron Man and Ironheart provide air support. May tackles and interrogates Palamas, who refuses to cooperate, but Riri retrieves intel from her accomplices' phones: they have been transporting the Stark tech to a warehouse in Chicago. Concerned for her hometown, Riri lashes out, blasting a warning shot after which Palamas smugly claims to be using Stark's surveillance tech to save the city. May knocks her out.

Flying to Chicago, Tony and Riri bring May along. Iron.GPT introduces Tony to Hellman Circle, a decades-abandoned Stark Industries warehouse recently purchased by The Heat. The trio launches a direct assault, with Iron Man using his sword to blast into the building. Riri quickly spots Xavier behind a barbed fence. Before they can act, they are greeted by Lucia von Bardas, who stands before them, backed by a partially stripped Stark Sentinel.

Notes

  • Like most Marvel comics released on January 2025, this issue opens with a tribute to Greg Hildebrandt, who passed away on October 31 at age 85, a prolific fantasy and science fiction artist alongside his late brother Tim. The two brothers notably worked together in the illustrations for the Marvel Masterpieces III trading card collection.
  • This comic, like most Marvel comics released this month, also features a congratulation to artists John Buscema, Arthur Adams and Larry Hama for being inducted into the 2024 Harvey Award Hall of Fame.
  • The Heat originated in Saladin Ahmed's Daredevil (Vol. 8). This issue marks their first appearance outside a Daredevil comic book.

Trivia

  • When Riri Williams suggest making use of the Iron Monger, Tony Stark shoots down her idea, warning that "taking gifts from netherbeings is how you end up a Nazgûl." The Nazgûl are characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's works, corrputed into servitude by the Dark Lord Sauron through the Rings of Power he gave them.
  • Riri brings takeaway from In-N-Out Burger, a fast food chain that operates primarily in California and is a staple of the American West Coast. She commends their "Animal Style," which is a secret menu serving option in which the beef patty is grilled with mustard, topped with extra spread, pickles and caramelized onions.
  • When she connects the Iron Monger to Tony's servers and it begins to eat up the magic worm's infection, Riri compares it to the video game character Ms. Pac-Man.
  • Hellman Circle is based on the Homan Square facility, a black site used by the Chicago Police Department in real life that Spencer Ackerman reported on in 2015.
