Thank you, Melinda. And believe me, I get it...you think I'm one of the worst S.H.I.E.L.D. directors in history. Don't worry, I'm not offended. It's a widely held view. But could one of the worst S.H.I.E.L.D. directors in history dethrone Emperor Doom?

Synopsis for "The Insurgent Iron Man - Part Two: Bow Down to Your Doom"

At the New York Stock Exchange, Tony Stark announces to a thrilled crowd that Stark Unlimited will continue manufacturing weapons to help protect the world under the shadow of Emperor Doom's reign. Donning his Silver Centurion Armor from his briefcase, he flies off. Landing atop Stark Tower, Melinda May meets Tony on the rooftop, where she chastises him for keeping her in the dark for this announcement. As he apologizes, she takes notice that Tony is wearing an old armor. Stark explains he will be needing to wear the Silver Centurion outside his activities in the West Coast for a while. Stowing the armor into his briefcase, Tony invites Melinda downstairs so he can clue her in on his plan since he needs her help.

Entering Tony's lab, Melinda is surprised to see a holographic projection of Latveria's map, but also irritated by the unexpected presence of Vishte Taru, who Tony introduces as a consultant. Stark lays out his plan: to supply weapons to Doom under the guise of cooperation so they can be intercepted by sympathizers within the Latverian Army aligned with the Latverian Patriotic Front. Stark doesn't need the LPF to win—he doesn't even particularly want them to—he just needs them to disrupt Doom's hold of Latveria. Since he plans to act behind the Avengers' back, he asks May to be his liaison with the LPF, to which she gladly agrees. After Vishte senses Doom's presence, the trio heads to the rooftop, where they encounter Victorious, furious and crackling with power. She blasts Tony's briefcase away and demands answers. Tony summons his upgraded Improvised Armor via his watch, jamming communications to hide it from the Avengers, and engages Victorious in combat in the sky. Vishte tries to intervene with magic to no avail, and is knocked down. After Victorious boasts that she is fueled by the Power Cosmic, Tony unleashes his armor's full power on her, realizing that he doesn't need to hold back. Carrying Victorious to the rooftop, Tony has Melinda confiscate her battle staff before patching into building comms to ask for a reception team at a conference room.

Victorious wakes in a medical bay, stripped of her armor and monitored by medical staff. She refuses to rest, insisting to speak with Stark. When Tony asks her about her recent breaking off with Doom, she reveals that his world conquest reignited her faith in him. Stark gestures Victorious to a conference table, where they sit to discuss Tony's allegiances while Melinda stands at the ready. Stark warns Victorious against Doom seizing Stark Unlimited, expecting the rest of the capitalist world to take action if they see one of the biggest corporations fall to Doom. He elaborates, explaining that pulling out of existing contracts with national militaries will prompt them to see it as their last best chance to rally againt Doom, so keeping the contracts in place would maintain the balance of power. Tony then suggests that the only way to part with them and avoid war is to shift his supply to Doom, providing him with the tech, energy and defense infrastructure necessary to impose his new order.

Taking offense, Victorious flips the table and attacks Tony. Suiting up to defend himself from her blasts, Tony pleads with her to see the logic: if Doom is supplied by Stark Unlimited, the world's militaries will be forced to accept his rule, avoiding open war. Melinda blasts Victorious from behind with her own battle staff, prompting her to cease hostilities. Stark clarifies that he doesn't need Doom to trust him, only to trust his desire to avoid conflict, while Tony knows that Doom doesn't want to base his empire on bloodshed. Stark asserts that Stark Unlimited is a strategic resource for many of the needs of the world, so cornering these resources will secure Doom's position. In a gesture of good faith, he kneels before Victorious, only asking Doom to understand his public need to side with the Avengers. Later, Victorious departs after instructing Tony to await word of Doom's decision. Once she is gone, May praises Stark's shrewdness, while he ponders that he might just be able to dethrone Doom after all.

Solicit Synopsis

THE IRON SELLOUT!

After witnessing firsthand the devastation of war, Tony Stark famously divested his company from the weapons trade. Then Orchis and Feilong came along, and a furious Iron Man watched them dismantle his legacy. Now Stark Unlimited is going back to its roots as Tony publicly announces a FULL-SCALE RETURN TO WEAPONS MANUFACTURING! What?! Why is Iron Man meeting with rebels outside Latveria? Why is the Winter Guard after him (this time)? Why is Doctor Doom sending angry emissaries to Stark’s door? WHAT IN ALL HELL IS TONY STARK DOING?!

Notes

  • When chastising Iron Man for returning to weapons manufacturing, Melinda May recalls that he "insulted me, threatened me" which refers to their exchange in issue #2 and that he "took me to a Hell dimension," "blocked my kill shot in the Hell dimension" and "fired me" which refers to the events of issue #3. Tony appropriatedly corrects her that it was Justine Hammer who took them to the "Hell dimension," which was Limbo.
  • Once May notices that Tony is wearing the Silver Centurion Armor, Tony explains that he has "been wearing it for a thing out west." An editor's note cites West Coast Avengers (Vol. 4). In the first isssue of this series, while returning to run the West Coast Avengers after Justine Hammer compromised his armory, Tony manages to find a copy of the Silver Centurion kept offline in storage. He continued using that armor throughout the series.
  • When going over his plan to destabilize Doctor Doom's reign, Tony recalls that he has encased Latveria in a mystical dome. This happened in Doctor Strange (Vol. 6) #18.
  • After Victorious wakes up in the med bay, Tony recalls that she had broken with Doom. An editor's note cites Avengers Assemble (Vol. 3) #4. In this comic, Victorious tried to breach into Doom's mystical dome, indignant at being left outside. The Aveng.E.R.S. intercepted her and convinced her to stop seeking Doom's favor. Zora also mentions that she no longer needs to wear her metal mask. After Zora's wedding with Doctor Doom fell through in Fantastic Four (Vol. 6) #34, Doom forced her to wear a mask modeled after his own to never see her face again.

Trivia

  • In the first panel of page 3, a bystander warns Iron Man, "Careful, Tone! It's not cool to run a big corporation out here!" This line of dialogue is a reference to the killing of Brian Thompson, the CEO of the American health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, who was shot dead in broad daylight in Manhattan on December 4, 2024. Two days after Thompson's killing, Spencer Ackerman shared on Instagram a screen capture of an email exchange with editors Sarah Brunstad and Lindsey Cohick, in which he asked for the addition of a speech bubble that read, "Careful, Tone! They're killing CEOs out here!" in this specific panel,[1] making the line of dialogue as it appears in the comic a more subdued allusion to Thompson's killing.
