Gargoyle[src]

History

The early history of the Gargoyle largely mirrors that of his Earth-616 counterpart.

Origins[]

As a young man, Isaac fought in World War I.[1] He held a woman named "Elaine" dear to his heart, and would remember her for the rest of his long life.[2] At some point in his life, Isaac made a deal with a demon, trapping him in the form of a stone gargoyle.

Decades later, Isaac became a member of the Defenders, fighting alongside the likes of Kyle Richmond and Doctor Strange against supernatural threats. [3]

Isaac was one of many heroes present when Mar-Vell passed away from cancer.[4]

Universe X[]

Years after the mutation of humanity, Isaac came upon his old friend and associate, Kyle Richmond, who was plagued by visions of both the future and the past. Kyle had become deeply tormented by his visions, and Isaac began taking care of him. He convinced Kyle that his powers could still do much good, as a way of chronicling history for future generations.[4]

Either before or shortly after reuniting with Kyle, Isaac was approached by Mr. Church, a spokesperson for the Church of Immortus. Church offered to restore Isaac's ability to feel if he provided him with transcribed copies of Kyle's visions. Isaac eagerly agreed, believing Church to be no more than a second tier mystic.[5]

Isaac carried on his work eagerly, with Kyle seemingly unaware of his deal with Mr. Church. Meanwhile, the world around them was falling into chaos, as the Church of Immortus waged war against the law enforcement of the city, while the very planet was on the verge of complete ecological destruction due to the removal of the Celestial embryo at its core.[4] To Isaac's great joy, Mr. Church seemingly delivered on their deal, and Isaac gradually became able to feel once more.[1]

Kyle eventually revealed that he was well aware of the deal Isaac had made, and attempted to make him see the error of his ways, revealing that Mr. Church was in fact Mephisto. Isaac was resolute in his belief that Kyle was wrong about Church, and that it was his right to seek a way to feel again, but upon witnessing the chaos of the city, he realized the error he had made. He sought out Mr. Church and attempted to end their partnership, begging him to make him stone again.[5] [6]

To Isaac's horror, the process of allowing him to feel again led his body to rapidly degenerate. He died in Kyle's arms, telling him that the future must be amazing, or Mephisto would not wish to alter it.[7]

After his death, Isaac's soul made its way to the Realm of the Dead. Mephisto himself, having seemingly won the war waged between himself and Death on the one side and Mar-Vell and his army of the dead on the other, greeted Isaac, using him to taunt the defeated Doctor Strange. Mephisto's celebration was premature however, as Mar-Vell's army of the dead rallied, buying him enough time to complete his quest for power in the realm of the living. Now whole, Mar-Vell defeated Mephisto and killed Death.[2]

Whether Isaac remained in the Realm of the Dead or ascended to Mar-Vell's paradise is unknown.

Personality

Isaac's long life and his inability to experience human sensations made him a mournful and nostalgic person. He was generally prideful, confident in his knowledge of the world. While listening earnestly, he often questioned Kyle's visions and maintained a resolute belief that the heroes of the world would rise to any challenge.[4]

While he was no longer able to feel sensations of the flesh, he dwelled often on things that reminded him of human sensations, particularly beautiful women.[4] [8]

Attributes

Powers

As the Gargoyle, Isaac Christians had the same abilities as his Earth-616 counterpart. However, it appears that he lost the ability to transform between a his gargoyle and human form, the reason behind this loss of ability has yet to be revealed, but it could be presumed it's due to Isaac's exposure to the Terrigen Mists in Earth's atmosphere.
