Jones was a sleazy reporter who managed to get a photo of Spider-Man without his mask.

D.J. takes a photo of an unmasked Spider-Man

He tried to sell the photo to a gangster, but ran into trouble. Spider-Man saved him and destroyed his camera film. After all, he has the consolation of seeing the face of Spider-Man, and that it should not be so difficult to find "a face in the crowd."
