History

Bucky in 1940s
Near the end of the war, Captain Carter, Hydra Stomper and the Howling Commandos went on a mission to capture Hydra leader Johann Schmidt. Bucky almost fell during the boarding of Hydra train, but was saved by Carter, who grabbed with with enough strength to almost rip his arm off. However, they were lured into a trap and the train exploded, seemingly burying Steve and the Hydra Stomper Armor under an avalanche of snow. Grieving, Carter interrogated Doctor Zola about Schmidt's base at Castle de Krake and led the Howling Commandos on a final decisive strike against Hydra. Inside, she and Stark separated from Howling Commandos, who found Rogers alive and freed him. The Tesseract was no longer there to power the Hydra Stomper Armor, but Steve told his friends to put him inside regardless and charge it with conventional electricity, which would only provide enough for a very short time.[1]
Meanwhile Schmidt used the Tesseract to summon an interdimensional monster. Bucky and the rest of the Howling Commandos eventually reached it and opened fire on it, but the monster only got enraged and started destroying the entire castle. Rogers used the Hydra Stomper Armor to get the Howling Commandos out of the collapsing structure while Captain Carter sacrificed herself to push the monster back inside the portal.[1]
Sometime prior to 2014, Bucky was appointed U.S. Secretary of State. He had also gotten married and had children.[2]Notes
- Sebastian Stan provided the voice of James Buchanan Barnes in the What If...? episodes "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" and "What If... Captain Carter Fought The HYDRA Stomper?".
Trivia
- This version of Bucky, at the time he appeared as Secretary, should be around 97 years old, which is a lot for an unenhanced human.
