History

James Barnes (Earth-8096) from Avengers Micro Episodes Captain America Season 1 1 001

During WWII

As a sidekick to Captain America, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes assisted him on a mission to take down the Red Skull. After sacrificing his life so that Captain America might survive, he exploded along with the Red Skull's rocket plane.[1]

However, after Captain America was found decades later, he came in contact with the Cosmic Cube, silently wishing that Bucky somehow survived. The cube granted his wish and altered reality, causing Bucky to survive the explosion, but to lose an arm. He fell into the Antarctic, and was possibly frozen.[2]

Under unknown circumstances, he was found by the US government, and given a cybernetic arm. He worked for the US Government and the Secretary of Defense, Dell Rusk (not knowing he was the Red Skull), under the alias "Winter Soldier." During one mission, he eliminated a team of SHIELD agents under the command of Nick Fury, and caused the commander to lose his left eye.[3]

He later infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. to steal a blood sample of the Hulk, in order to transform General Ross into the Red Hulk.[4]

After Skull's "Code Red" plan was defeated, Bucky began to track down and destroy the "Sleeper" robots the Skull had created as a backup plan. During this time, he was found by Captain America, who had figured out his true identity. Over the course of the mission, the pair settled their differences and worked together to bring down the Red Skull once and for all, Steve even saving Bucky where he had failed decades ago. He offered his friend a place in the Avengers, but Bucky turned him down, saying he still needed to sort out things in his head before he could rejoin society.[3]

He was later seen aiding the Avengers in fighting Galactus.[5]
