What are the unique abilities that Wolverine possesses? toggle section
Wolverine, also known as James Howlett or Logan in the Marvel universe, possesses several unique abilities that make him a formidable character. His primary mutant ability is the 'mutant healing factor', which allows him to recover from virtually any wound faster and more extensively than a normal human being. This healing factor also grants him immunity to all earthly diseases and illnesses, and most effects of alcohol, drugs, and toxins. Additionally, his healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan, immensely slowing his aging process. Wolverine also has superhuman strength, thanks to his adamantium skeleton. His bones, infused with Adamantium, are indestructible and his claws can penetrate most flesh and many natural materials. Wolverine also has superhuman senses, particularly his hearing and smell, which are significantly more enhanced than a normal human's. He also has the ability to communicate with animals, sensing their emotional states and intentions.

Why did James Howlett abandon his family and adopt the name Logan? toggle section
James Howlett, also known as Wolverine in the Marvel universe, was forced to abandon his family due to a tragic incident that led to him accidentally killing his own father. This event triggered his mutant abilities, causing his bone claws to pop out for the first time. In the aftermath, he ran away with his childhood companion, Rose. To hide his identity and escape his painful past, Rose gave him the name 'Logan'. Over time, James fully embraced this new identity, becoming a respected figure among miners in the Yukon Territories of Canada. His hard work and animalistic way of working earned him the nickname 'Wolverine'.

What is the significance of Wolverine's berserker fury? toggle section
Wolverine's berserker fury is a significant aspect of his character in the Marvel universe. This rage, often triggered by intense situations, enhances his aggression and fighting skills, making him a formidable opponent. It's a reflection of his primal instincts and his struggle to maintain control over them. This fury also contributes to his reputation as one of the most fearless, brave, and dangerous men in the world. Despite his berserker rage, Wolverine is known for his loyalty and protective nature, especially towards his teammates in the X-Men and those he considers family. His berserker fury, therefore, is not just a symbol of his ferocity as a warrior, but also his passion and dedication to those he cares about.

How does Wolverine's violent nature affect his reputation as a superhero? toggle section
Wolverine's violent nature, often manifesting as a berserker fury, has earned him a dual reputation as both a formidable superhero and a lethal killer. This dichotomy is a defining aspect of his character. Despite his aggressive behavior, Wolverine has proven to be a valuable member of superhero teams like the X-Men and the Avengers. However, his readiness to employ lethal force and his willingness to permanently deal with adversaries have also made him one of the most feared and dangerous men in the world. His violent tendencies have often put him in conflict with his teammates, particularly those who advocate for less violent solutions. Yet, over time, Wolverine has grown fond of his fellow superheroes, considering them his new family. His violent nature, combined with his bravery and fearlessness, make Wolverine a complex and intriguing character in the Marvel universe.

History

Early Years

Wolverine's life began in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada, sometime between 1882 and 1885.[39] The mutant who would come to be known simply as "Logan" was born James Howlett, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Howlett (who was married to John Howlett, owner of a large estate) and the Howletts' grounds-keeper, Thomas Logan. As a boy, James was notably frail and prone to bouts of allergic attacks. He was largely neglected by his mother, who had been institutionalized for a time following the death of her first son, John Jr., in 1897. James was constantly under the pressure of his grandfather, Mr. Howlett, who believed that James required constant punishment by a strong hand, in order to be raised properly. "Firm, but fair," was what Mr. Howlett said to justify his abusive actions.[1]

Claws pop for the first time

James spent most of his early years on the Howlett Estate grounds with two playmates that lived at the estate with him: Rose O'Hara, a red-headed Irish girl who was brought in from town to be a companion to young James, and a boy nicknamed "Dog", Thomas Logan's son (and James's half-brother). The children were close friends, but, as they reached adolescence, the abuse inflicted upon Dog warped his mind. Dog made unwanted advances towards Rose, which James reported to his father. In retaliation, Dog killed James' puppy, leading to the expulsion of Thomas and Dog from the estate.

Thomas, in a drunken stupor and armed with a shotgun, invaded the Howlett Estate with his son and attempted to take his former lover Elizabeth with him. John, Sr. attempted to stop him and Thomas shot him in the head, in cold blood. James had just entered the room when this occurred and his mutation finally manifested: bone claws extended from the backs of his hands and he attacked the intruders with uncharacteristic ferocity, killing Thomas and scarring Dog's face with three claw marks.[40] Already an emotionally disturbed woman since the death of her first son, Elizabeth, completely unhinged, drove James away and took her life immediately afterward with a blast from Thomas' gun.

Rose fled the estate with James in tow, hiding in a shed. James experienced his heightened senses for the first time telling Rose that he could smell apple dumplings.

Dog falsely reported to the police and James' grandfather that Rose had murdered John, Sr. and Thomas. Rose led James to his grandfather's house, but Mr. Howlett simply ordered them to flee by train, with cold, cruel eyes, but still used his influence in town to help the pair escape, due to blood ties. Rose then fled the estate with James, who appeared to have been deeply traumatized and his healing factor had somehow driven the trauma from his memories, leaving him partially amnesiac.[41]

"Logan" leading a pack of wolves

"Little Smitty"

James and Rose later found themselves in the Yukon Territories in Canada, taking refuge in a British Columbia stone quarry, under the guise of being cousins. James also assumed the name of "Logan", in order to hide his identity. Within months, as the hard work of mining and the tough environment provoked traumatic changes in his body, Logan grew to be unusually healthy and ferocious, displaying enhanced agility and strength, possessing animal-like heightened senses that rivaled any animal's and learning to break the rocks by hating and bullying them.[42] [43]

Later, Logan stated that it was a piece of his grandfather's devil personality. In his adulthood, James came to resemble the appearance of the groundskeeper much more closely than his legal father. Logan became a valuable and admirable figure among the small community of miners, due to his hard work and strong ethics, earning him the respect of his peers.

Even the foreman, Smitty, who became a surrogate father figure to Logan, was impressed with him. Logan even gained the nickname "Little Smitty", due to their similar work ethics, and this brought him into conflict with Cookie Malone, Smitty's original favorite.[42]

Cookie took an instant dislike to Logan and continually hurt him, until Smitty came to his rescue. Cookie even shortened the fuse to an explosive of Logan's, killing five men. Cookie also cut Logan and Rose's rations, so Logan hunted deer in the woods and gave the extra to the neighbors, which made him more loved. Logan was immune to the elements, due to his healing factor, and even ran with the wolves in the forest, learning to hunt like an animal. Logan also defeated Cookie in a cage match, where he earned the nickname "the Wolverine." It was said that no one could beat Logan in a cage fight. After his victories, Logan would hear "It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog" a phrase that he repeated out loud to make it come true. During this period, Logan developed strong feelings for Rose, but could not act on them for the sake of their guise as cousins. Smitty, who had been mentoring Logan all these years, had also grown close to Rose and the two eventually fell in love and became engaged, much to the scorn and surprise of Logan, who later accepted the situation for the sake of Rose's happiness.

Meanwhile, his grandfather, Mr. Howlett, was in failing health and asked Dog to find Rose and his grandson, so he could make peace with them before he died. Dog agreed; however, Dog (who had become a physically formidable man himself) decided to track them down, so he could kill Logan. Dog hunted Logan and Rose down so easily that it seemed he had a preternatural skill for tracking.[44]

On the night that Smitty was due to leave the mining town with Rose, Logan fought him but allowed him to win, hoping to reconcile with him and Rose, but Dog finally found and confronted Logan. Dog reminded Logan of his past as James Howlett and that fateful night back on the estate that had changed all their lives. The two fought fiercely in the middle of the street and, despite being the physically stronger of the two, Dog was eventually overpowered by the enraged Logan.

As Dog lay unconscious, Logan unsheathed his claws, for the first time in public (to the shock of everyone watching), and was about to deal the deathblow, when Rose leaped in to stop him, but was accidentally impaled by his claws. Horrified, Logan held her in his arms as she died. Stricken with grief and guilt for the death of his first love, Logan fled into the nearby woods, where he lived in self-imposed exile in a feral state with a pack of wolves for months, if not years.[45]

James Howlett (616) from Origin II Vol 1 1

Logan the Wolfish Man

The Creeds

In 1907, Logan had found a family of wolves in the wilderness and began running with their pack. By suppressing the man beneath the instincts of the animal, Logan found a manner of peace. It didn't last, the sinister scientist Nathaniel Essex conducted an experiment by releasing an apex predator like a polar bear further south into the Canadian woods. The bear could not adapt its hunting techniques to the new environment, but its strength and raw power was enough to overcome Logan's pack while he was away, killing and eating the wolves. When he returned, Logan and the bear mortally wounded each other in a struggle, but only one had a healing factor. Logan survived and was alone again.[46]

His victory did not go unnoticed. Essex's hired men soon found the bear's corpse and the signs it was killed by neither man nor beast. One of the men began telling tales of the "savage" at the local watering hole, drawing the curious and entrepreneurial. A circus promoter named Hugo came to the North with a brother and sister team called Saul and Clara, his tracker and animal trainer, respectively. Their skills allowed them to locate Logan where the brute force efforts of Essex and his Marauders failed. Logan remained the wild man and was promoted by Hugo as a "missing link" when he appeared in the big top. Clara believed there was a human soul inside Logan and tried to encourage him to speak, but Logan refused and just accepted his inhumane treatment as a new form of penance.[47]

Essex was undeterred, however, and lured Hugo with Logan to his laboratory to "authenticate" his specimen. Essex killed Hugo and began experimental torture sessions on Logan to study his healing factor, including vivisection. Clara convinced Saul to help her rescue Logan, and the three of them escaped Essex's lab together. Clara spent the next month teaching Logan to behave like a man again, but their relationship made Saul jealous. He sold their location to Essex, but when it appeared as if Clara was killed in the crossfire, Saul and Logan joined forces to kill Essex. Clara and Saul were also mutants with healing powers, however, and when Clara tracked them down and Saul's misdoings were revealed, Logan was furious. Ignoring Clara's pleas, Logan drowned her brother in one of Essex's vats. Clara rejected Logan after that, retorting that the man inside him wasn't worth as much as the animal. (Logan never learned that Clara Creed told her older brother, Victor about Saul's death, prompting an obsession that would last lifetimes.[48]

Logan´s Women

Alone again, Logan wandered back out into the wilderness, but could not return to the wild as the animal he once thought he was. Fleeing Canada, Logan traveled down into California, where he worked in the fruit orchards. He met a young girl, a Mexican migrant worker, and despite the language barrier they felt an attraction for one another. One day, she led him without a word into the orchards and they made love for the first time. Logan never learned her name, and they never saw each other again.[49]

Around this time, Logan met and fell in-love with many women. Unknown to him, Logan also fathered a number of children. Romulus, a supposed immortal being, had taken interest in the Hudson line, Logan's mother's family, and over coming decades, he whether directly or through proxies, altered or erased Logan's memories to suit him.

Birthday Surprise

Apparently under Romulus' guidance, Logan became a mercenary in Madripoor. Sometime later he met Chang, a businessman working for the firm Landau, Luckman & Lake. He met and romanced Seraph, a diminutive woman employed by Romulus, who had instructed her to form such relationship. In the next years Logan realized that Seraph and other acknowledges were under a single authority, but he didn't know, or care who it was.[50] Possibly on his first trip to Japan, Logan encountered members of the ninja sect known as the Hand. The Hand extorted Logan into fighting Sabretooth, who was another Romulus operative murdering women in Tokyo.[51] Logan defeated Sabretooth and thought he was dead, without knowing of Sabretooth's healing factor.[52]

At some point later, Logan traveled to another frontier community in the Canadian Rockies and met a young Blackfoot Indian woman, named Silver Fox, with whom he fell in love.[53] The two shared a cabin together and lived happily for a time. Logan had made a new life for himself: hunting and farm chores around the homestead now his daily routine, but, as ever, there were other forces at work in his life. On Logan's birthday, Sabretooth, possibly under Romulus' orders, brutally attacked Silver Fox, raping her and leaving her for dead, the first of many birthday "surprises" from him to come. Enraged, Logan battled him in a bar, only to be defeated and left for dead.[54] Sabretooth then manipulated a feral, mindless Logan into believing the people of a nearby town had ordered Silver Fox's death, prompting Logan to slaughter the inhabitants of the town, persuading him that "the townspeople are afraid of you--they don't want you around. So, they got rid of the one thing keeping you here."[55]

Later, employed by the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trader to the Blackfoot Indians, Logan defeated the demonic snake-worm, known as Uncegila, a feat which earned him the Blackfoot warrior name of "Skunk-Bear" (or "Wolverine").[56]

Abroad, largely unseen conspiracy thus began to shape Logan, now robbed of his conscience and free will, into the perfect killer. Wherever Logan went, Creed, one of his handlers, was not far behind.

World War I

When World War I began in 1914, Logan joined the Canadian Army, where he was assigned to the Devil's Brigade, a special Canadian military unit sometimes used by Romulus. Logan's commanding officer was a super-humanly strong man known as Silas Burr (who would later become the mercenary Cyber), who was formerly an agent of the Pinkerton Private Detective Agency, where he abused his position, committing several atrocities, even burning down a schoolhouse full of children once. After being sentenced to death for his crimes, Burr was rescued from the courthouse, by Creed, and brought to the facility, hired by Frederick Hudson due to his sadistic nature. Yet another Romulus operative, Logan fell in love with female operative Janet per Burr's manipulation.[57]

Later in the war Logan and other soldiers were sent to Europe, and while fighting in Ypres, Belgium, on April 22, 1915, Logan encountered a being, called Lazaer (an anagram of Azrael, the Angel of Death), who was armed with a large broadsword and had been using it to kill soldiers on the same battlefield. They began to fight one another, with Lazaer initially gaining the upper hand, but, after being impaled with Lazaer's sword, Logan pulled it from his chest and stabbed it through his surprised opponent.[58]

Besting Lazaer in combat sent Logan into a deep depression, even causing him to put a gun to his own head at one point. Logan started drinking considerably more as the war dragged on and ate less and less, until Lazaer finally confronted him. Lazaer explained that the depression was a punishment for defeating him and defying the natural order of things. It was also later revealed that because Logan defeated Lazaer, whenever Logan was wounded severely enough to tax even his healing factor, he recovered by defeating Lazaer in an astral arena.[59]

Afterwards, Logan was re-stationed in Canada, and Burr, under orders from Romulus' proxy, killed Janet as a lesson that whenever Logan overcame his inner bestial nature to care for someone, that person would die. Seeking for vengeance, Logan fought Burr, who severely beat him and gouged out his left eye.[60] Logan descended to a near-feral state, his healing factor again obscuring his traumatic memories, and he fled Canada to travel abroad, as Romulus intended.[57]

Kansas City Bank Robbery

Wolverine Vol 3 62 page - James Howlett (Earth-616)

Logan and Mystique in 1921.

In 1921, Logan found himself in the Mexican Sonoran Desert beaten, locked up by the local police, and accused of horse thievery. As Logan was blindfolded and tied to a post to be shot, by a firing squad, a voice next to him asked if he was a murderer. Logan answered, “…worse, a horse thief.”, and the person next to him turned out to be Mystique, who was also about to be killed for having blue skin. The locals thought she was a witch, even though she explained that she was simply born different, and Logan laughed at meeting someone like him there of all places. Mystique managed to untie herself, just before the firing squad shot, and Logan survived, due, once again, to his healing factor, and killed the guards.[61]

After they both escaped, Mystique stood surprised that Logan was able to survive and asked how he knew she would be able to free herself and escape. Logan responded, “I didn't.”, and, when she asked where he was going to next, he said the nearest bar. Mystique introduced herself to Logan and said that she had a group of friends in Kansas City that he would probably like to meet.

Once in Kansas City, Mystique told Logan about her group, who scammed people. After meeting her crew, and saving one of them from an angry customer that was scammed, Mystique informed Logan that she and her crew were planning a bank heist and she wanted him to take part in it. When Logan expressed his reluctance to get attached to people, she told him that she knew it was hard to trust people, but that they could be a family and to trust her. They both kissed and Logan decided to help her.[62]

However, he tipped off the police about the planned bank robbery. Mystique cut and ran, and despite Logan's protests, her crew was killed by the police. Logan again found himself alone and with a festering hatred for the woman he had come to trust.[63] He continued his own criminal activities for a few years, smuggling bootleg alcohol during Prohibition of the mid-1920s.[64]

Prohibition Era

In the Prohibition Era, Logan also happened across a young vampire hunter named Eric Brooks in New York City, New York, and saved his life from a marauding vampire.[65] Around this time, Logan worked as a bootlegger bringing hooch down from Canada to Chicago or Minnesota. He ran afoul of Al Capone, who was using Victor Creed as a hitman. Capone and Creed lured Logan to the site of the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre, which he barely survived.[66] He had another encounter with rival bootleggers in Minnesota while working with his friend Elias from the Great War. Elias was killed by the mobsters and Logan tried to fulfill his last request of getting Elias' four kids to safety at their aunt's farm. In South Dakota, Logan was gifted with a motorcycle for his efforts protecting the kids, possibly his first motorcycle.[67]

Sometime during the early 30s, Logan went to Shanghai, China, and he intervened in a conflict between locals and Ogun, a Japanese soldier, samurai and sorcerer. Impressed by Logan, Ogun offered to train him in the martial arts, but he declined.[68]

By 1932 Logan was in Madripoor again, and Seraph taught him how to be a better assassin. Around this time, Logan started to use his recurrent alias "Patch".[50] Some time later, Logan remembered Ogun's offer and he went to Japan to better learn self-discipline. There, he spent years under Ogun's tutelage, and Logan regarded him as a surrogate father.[69]

In 1934, while in Marrakech Logan was hired by the Covenant to kill the Dreaming Maiden but Logan couldn't do it and decided to hide her somewhere safe in a cave.[70] To make sure she couldn't be found, he asked her to stop using her powers until he found a way to save her, as a result she stopped dreaming and turned to crystal.[71] In 1935 in Shanghai, Logan reported to the Covenant that the Dreaming Maiden was dead and despite the fact that the Covevant wanted Logan to kill more people like her, he refused and walked away.[72] Unfortunately Logan's memories would be altered afterwards and for years she would remained hidden, but during all those years she grew angry and one day she would start dreaming again.[73]

In 1936, Logan was in Scotland working with Raven Darkholme and Irene Adler, two mutant adventurers and lovers. Maybe because of memory alteration, Logan was unaware that the apparently male Raven was Mystique. Around the same time he met for the first time Geist but also Kitty Pryde and Rachel Summers who time travelled to the past. The trio managed to stop the plans of the Baron Von Struker and Amahl Farouk.[74] Strangely several clues led to think that Logan's skeleton and claws weren't bones during this adventure but adamantium, for example he could touched Kitty while phased. One explanation could be that this Logan was also a time traveller from the future (before he joined the X-Men but after the Weapon X experiment) sent back in time by Landau, Luckman and Lake. Another clue supporting the time travel theory was the fact that Logan paraphrased the movie Magnum Force which was released in 1973 when he said: “I guess the man doesn't know his limitations”.

Later, Logan went into action in Spain during its Civil War.[75]

In 1937, Logan, under Romulus' orders, started to learn espionage from Taras Romanov, and in turn Logan gave hand-to-hand combat lessons to Natasha Romanoff, Taras' ward. Logan would trained with Taras for a little over 2 years.[76] According to Sabretooth, Logan was later involved in several espionage operations in Madripoor in 1938. [77]

James Howlett (Earth-616) from Wolverine Origins Vol 1 17 0001

Logan during World War II.

World War II

Despite his training with Taras, when World War II began in 1939, Logan briefly returned to the Devil's Brigade, again under Burr's command, although his memories of Burr's crimes were mostly purged. Seraph was like Logan's handler in Madripoor, and she prepared him for more covert missions for Romulus.

In 1940, Logan returned to train with Taras and Natasha, that's when Taras told Natasha to kill Logan, but Logan instead killed him and allowed Natasha to depart.[76][78]

In the summer of 1941, both Seraph and Logan worked with the U.S. super-soldier Captain America and others in order to sabotage an alliance between the Hand and Baron Strucker, luring the Hand's Jonin, their leader, out of hiding. Natasha Romanoff, now a Romulus operative, wanted to kill the Jonin, but Logan, regretting how he trained her to be an assassin, killed the Jonin himself.[28] Later that same year, Logan, under orders to recruit or kill Captain America,[79] worked with him and Bucky in Tunisia, where Logan met Sgt. Nick Fury.[57] Finally, Logan decided not to kill Captain America, creating a rift between Seraph and himself.[80]

In 1942, Logan spent some time in the Sobibor Death Camp in Poland, where he psychologically tortured three Nazi commandants by simply never speaking and returning every time they ordered him executed. While at Sobibor, Logan was known as "Prisoner Zero."[81] A year later he surfaced in Newell, California, overseeing inhumane experimentation on Japanese prisoners of war. Even though Logan had been a hardened killer, he was atypically cruel during this period, his personality probably altered by Romulus.[82] In 1944, Logan participated as a paratrooper for the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, during the Normandy landings on D-Day (June 6th)[83], as well as the liberation of the Netherlands. He may have also been a spy for the Allied Forces, conducting many special covert missions. In 1945, Logan was captured by Japanese soldiers in Japan, where he was sent to a prison camp near Hiroshima. Logan escaped from his cell along with Lt. Ethan Warren, an American soldier who was also captured, and found refuge and love in a local Japanese girl, named Atsuko.[84] Unfortunately, Lt. Warren, himself a mutant, returned and murdered the girl and the two men fought, until both were caught in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima that destroyed much of the city. Logan survived, but was devastated to lose another woman in his life.[85]

Sometime during the war, while Logan was in Paris killing several High Ranking Nazi Officers, he met Hercules for the first time but Logan mistaken him for Namor (since Hercules was forbidden to take part in this war by the Olympian Gods he hided his true identity and decided to pose as Namor).[86]

Jasmine Falls

After the war ended, Logan sought redemption in Jasmine Falls, Japan, and he studied with Bando Saburo, in order to learn how to be a man and leave his warrior nature behind. Finally at peace since Silver Fox's supposed death, Logan met and fell in love with a local woman, named Itsu Akihiro and they married and conceived a child together which filled Logan with joy.[87]

In 1946, while Logan was proving himself worthy of being a father in combat, the demon sword-smith, Muramasa, created an explosion that caused Logan to accidentally stab a villager with his claws. Logan was banned from the village, but wanted to say good-bye to Itsu. Returning to their self-built home, Logan found Itsu murdered, by Bucky Barnes, now the brainwashed Winter Soldier. Although Barnes ostensibly served the USSR, he was acting under Romulus' orders. Believing their child to be dead, Logan mistakenly blamed Muramasa, who captured and tortured him. After Itsu's death, Logan disappeared for a month and while awaiting new orders the Winter Soldier saw that Muramasa's underlings were preparing to dispose of an unconscious Logan. Bucky decided to ignore his orders and he killed Muramasa's men, Logan was then extracted 8 hours later.[87] Unknown to Logan, Romulus took the child from Itsu's womb, and he was safely born and adopted by a Japanese couple. This child was named Akihiro, but he eventually took the name "Daken", which means "Mongrel." Nine years later Daken fell under the influence of Romulus, and he was told lies that his father despised him and abandoned him, filling Daken with hatred. [82] [88]

San Francisco's Chinatown

In 1958, Logan wandered into San Francisco’s Chinatown, looking for some good noodles. He came across members of the Black Dragon Tong shaking down a restaurant owner and his daughter Lin for protection money. Logan chased the thugs away with little effort, and took a liking to Lin, so he decided to stay awhile. Soon Logan found himself orchestrating a revolution in Chinatown, uniting all the kung fu schools into his army against the Black Dragons with Lin at his side. Only after he decapitated the Black Dragon in a swordfight did Logan realize the people of Chinatown expected him to become the new Black Dragon. A Dragon was a necessary evil to holding the warring tongs together, and so the people named Logan the Fist of Legend and passed on the Spear of the Black Dragon to him. But Logan wasn’t interested in ruling. He was, in essence, just looking for a good fight, and refused the honor. Lin and the people turned on Logan for his rejection, and he was warned to never set foot in Chinatown again.[89]

CIA and Cold War

Logan resurfaced as a mercenary. It's unknown if he retained his memories of Itsu. Chang arranged for Landau, Luckman and Lake to handle Logan's business affairs and find assignments, and Logan would in exchange do occasional services. He operated most of the times from Ottawa and Calgary, with few exceptions into South America and Madripoor, working for government agencies, and he became one of the deadliest free agents of the intelligence field. Working for the CIA, Logan, indulged in this brutal mission per Romulus' command, helped participate in turning a boy, named Frank Simpson, into the deranged super-soldier, Nuke. In 1953 Frank, growing up watching his alcoholic mother constantly verbally abuse his meek father, was influenced by his babysitter into killing his mother. Meanwhile, as Frank's father drove the babysitter home, she abruptly pulled out his flask and began to drink it and then seduced him.[90] After pulling over into the nearby woods, the couple was interrupted by a police officer, who was revealed to be Logan. Logan asked Frank's father to sit back in his seat and shot the babysitter, with Frank's gun. Logan then suggested that Frank's father had taken advantage of the babysitter, plying her with alcohol and even going so far as to shooting her because she resisted. Frank's father realized the gravity of the situation and, seeing no other way, he shot himself.[91]

Logan continued his espionage work, becoming a favorite of both America's and Canada's secret services, even teaming up with Ben Grimm (later known as the Thing) and Carol Danvers (later known as Captain Marvel)[92] but also Richard and Mary Parker (the parents of Peter Parker a.k.a the Amazing Spider-Man)[8] as part of Cold War-era government missions. During one of those mission when he was guarding Michael Carling, a scientist, for Landau, Luckman and Lake, Logan fought Kimora, who was after Carling's expertise in large-scale transportation between Earth and Kageumbra, his home dimension. Kimora defeated Logan, and even called him a beast in a man's clothing; however, Chang seemingly decapitated Kimora after this. Logan retired for a while, returning to Jasmine Falls and spending years there seeking his lost tranquility, until Chang found him and asked for his help to prevent Kimora from conquering Earth via Carling's technology. They both traveled to Kageumbra, where Logan and Kimora fought once again. Logan relied this time upon meditative training and berserker rage, and he hurled Kimora into a dimension-travelling device, which he destroyed. Again on Earth, Chang offered Logan a position with Landau, Luckman and Lake, but Logan declined.[93]

During his time into the CIA, Wolverine had also allegedly participated in strikes against three African leaders, stating on records and information of the Mbangawi rode by the Doctor Crocodile.[94]

The Team X Project

File:Team X (Earth-616) 001.jpg

Logan with fellow Team X member Sabretooth

By 1961, Logan, known as Wolverine now, joined the Weapon X Project, part of the Weapon Plus Program, which had been created to fight the mutant menace. Nevertheless, Weapon X only used mutants as superhuman operatives on international tasks. He was then placed on the Black Ops squad run by the CIA, called Team X, with Sabretooth and Silver Fox (it's unknown if they remembered their past history at this point), Maverick, Kestrel and Mastodon.[14] During this time, Logan and the others received memory implants via staged scenarios, telepathic manipulation by Aldo Ferro, and other technology.[95] Weapon X also duplicated Wolverine's healing factor and implanted it in Team X, slowing their aging processes. In 1963 Silver Fox betrayed Wolverine and Sabretooth to enemy soldiers, and she fled Weapon X.[14]

In 1963, Wolverine was shot with Carbonadium bullets, which slowed his healing factor so that Weapon X or Romulus could know how to kill him.[96] The bullets were removed, but he awoke earlier than expected, and he regained his memories for the first time in years, because they hadn't been altered yet.[97] Logan tried to keep the secret, and he rendezvoused with Team X in Berlin, East Germany. The team retrieved the Carbonadium Synthesizer and Janice Hollenbeck, a double agent. However, Sabretooth, apparently was aware that Wolverine had regained his memories, killed Janice to reinforce Wolverine's conditioning about innocents dying when he overstepped Romulus' boundaries.[98] After this event Logan quitted Team X.[99]

In 1966, Logan was contacted by Nick Fury to help him investigate and put a stop to the atrocities commited by the Sym-Soldiers in Vietnam. Logan decided to help Fury and they went to Vietnam, shortly after landing they discovered a survivor Rex Strickland codename Tyrannosaurus, who was part of the Sym-Soldiers and who appeared to have been separated from his symbiote. The trio was then attacked by the Sym-Soldiers and Logan was taken over by Rex's symbiote. He was saved by Rex but after being bonded with the symbiote Logan discovered the truth, that this whole mission was a setup and that the Nick Fury he teamed up with was just a LMD. The real Fury activated a bomb inside the LMD to destroy the symbiotes, Rex's symbiote touched by Logan's compassion and influenced by Rex's nobility and inherit goodness threw Logan away of the blast radius saving his life.[100]

Shorty after, Logan fell back under Romulus' influence, turning to atypically sadistic activities. In 1968, he went back to Vietnam as a Russian adviser where he tortured and brainwashed Frank Simpson, now a soldier, into becoming a murderous madman, known as Nuke.[90]

Wolverine's Mutant Team

Eventually, Team X did dissolve, and despite his relatively exemplary service record, Logan drifted out of official channels for a time. His memory of his bone claws returned (or perhaps more accurately, was allowed to return by Romulus), and Logan began to see himself as nothing more than a mercenary and a hired killer. Either because of this change in self-perception or more memory tampering, Logan was on better terms with Creed than he had been in years, considering him a good man to have his back. Times were changing in America, however, as the general public and the government slowly began to recognize the presence of mutants in their midst. Logan soon realized the government was now actively hunting mutants. Deciding to make a stand against this sort of treatment, Logan recruited Creed to help him obstruct the government’s plans.[101][102]

Logan and Creed rescued or located a number of young mutants. They had some setbacks, however, when they failed to recruit a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. Logan brought his recruits to a safe house in Upstate New York for further training. Creed took a particular liking to Holo, an eighteen-year-old girl with illusion powers who helped him feel like a man beneath his bestial exterior. Seeing a chance at happiness, Creed tried to get out of the fight and take Holo with him before things turned bad, but Logan and Holo convinced him to remain with the group. Holo believed in Logan and helped calm his own doubts about his goals and leadership. Logan’s plan was to pit the government against the bottom dollar, using sabotage and guerrilla tactics to make hunting mutants too expensive to continue. Once the agency was weakened, he and perhaps Creed would offer their services as mutant agents voluntarily in exchange for the younger mutants being allowed to remain free and unmolested by the government.[103][104]

Unfortunately, the government pushed back far harder than Logan anticipated. The fanatical anthropologist turned cyberneticist Bolivar Trask provided the agency with mutant-hunting Sentinel prototypes, and the deformed mutant Virus used his mental powers to infiltrate Logan’s group on behalf of the government. Despite the warnings and plea for common ground proposed by Agent Fred Duncan, a violent raid was launched on Logan’s safe house, leading to a number of deaths. The worst of it came when Virus mentally forced Creed to lethally wound Holo with his claws. As the distraught Creed fled with Holo in a vain attempt to get her medical care, Logan stayed behind as his dream, and the house literally collapsed around him.

In the aftermath, the mutant department did collapse from over-expenditure. Only the cautious Fred Duncan was still employed to research “the mutant agenda,” and the government’s position on the matter went back to square one. Despite this “victory,” Logan hated himself for failing Victor and getting the others killed. He was trying to drown his sorrows when Creed arrived at the bar to confront him. Victor made it clear he blamed Logan for Holo’s death, and costing Creed the only chance at happiness he would likely ever see. Creed coldly told Logan he wasn’t there to kill him, but if Logan ever picked himself up and dared to be happy about something again, Creed would be there to take it away from him every time. As Victor departed, Logan stumbled out into the parking lot. He was met by Canadian government agents and, with nowhere else to go, Logan agreed to return to service.[105]

Department K

By 1972, Wolverine joined Department K, a secret Canadian Defense Ministry branch with ties to Weapon X. Based in Ottawa, he partnered with Neil Langram and worked with Nick Fury, now a high-ranking CIA agent, and with Richard and Mary Parker. Years later, Langram was sought as an operative by the Hellfire Club, but he refused, and he was then slain by Sabretooth, hired as a mercenary. Wolverine and Carol Danvers, a young US spy, investigated and confronted Sabretooth at the Club's Canadian facility. Sabretooth told Wolverine details of the Club's intent to guide a war between mutants and humans. Sabretooth then bombed the facility, but he, Wolverine and Danvers survived.[106] A troubled Wolverine turned to drugs and alcohol, and he was dismissed from Department K after accidentally shooting a fellow agent. Disgusted with himself, he planned to lose himself in the Yukon.[18]

Wolverine prepped for adamantium bonding process

Weapon X Program

But before leaving Canada, while in his Lotus Seven, Logan was pumped full of Thorazine, beaten, and kidnapped, by a group of armed men from the Weapon X Project, possibly under Romulus' orders.[107] The man known only as the Professor, Dr. Abraham Cornelius, and Dr. Carol Hines began to examine Logan while he floated in a containment tank. Logan's skeleton, including his claws, was bonded with the indestructible metal known as adamantium, making it unbreakable, and his personality was buried beneath the most intense brainwashing he had ever undergone.[108] Logan was then put under deep hypnosis, telling him that he was not a man or individual, and being a man disgusted him.[109] The Project wanted Logan to believe that he was an obedient animal and that individuality lead to suffering and death. Reduced to a near-mindless state, Logan was forced by Weapon X to slaughter every inhabitant of the small town of Roanoke as a test.[110] Logan proved too difficult for the Weapon X Program to control and, after some time, he broke free of the programming, fell into a berserker fury and escaped the facility, killing nearly everyone except for the Professor, Dr. Cornelius, Dr. Hines, and Malcolm Colcord, who later became the Director of a new Weapon X Program.[111] [112] Wolverine's healing factor was probably exhausted by his ordeal, since over the next few years he healed more slowly than ever before.

Driven into savagery by the experiment, Logan wandered the forests of the Canadian Rockies for months, living in a feral state, ironically, not far from the place of his birth. It was during this period Logan saved the life of a creature, known as Hunter in Darkness, one of a race of feral beings apparently mystical in origin. A psychic link of some sort was established between the two, to resurface in later years.[22] On occasion, Logan's human personality surfaced, to the extent that, years later, he was able to recall pleasant experiences in these woods. Years after this experience, Logan's memories of much of his past would remain clouded, as a result of the Weapon X experiment and additional false memories during the procedure as well.

Department H

Wandering in the woods, Logan was eventually discovered by Heather and James "Mac" Hudson, a young couple honeymooning in the Rockies, whom he attacked, only to be shot by Hudson, whom neither knew was Wolverine's cousin from his maternal Hudson line. While he recovered, Logan regained enough of his human persona to be horrified at his claws, believing them to be artificial implants.[113] Recovering his mental faculties with the Hudson's help, Logan became a member of Canada's Department H, the superhuman-oriented government agency James Hudson founded. Sometime later, Wolverine consulted adamantium expert Myron MacLain, and he was targeted by Sabretooth and, under Silver Fox' leadership, Hydra. Wolverine was aided by Nick Fury, Carol Danvers and Natasha Romanoff, now the Russian super-spy Black Widow. Even though Wolverine and his allies triumphed, his full memories remained not restored, and he didn't recognize former friends or enemies.[114] Logan eventually regained memories of Burr, Seraph, Captain America and other parts of his life, but due to Weapon X intervention and his healing factor, some areas were left blank, like his life with Itsu and much of his Team X service. Logan also underwent ongoing intense psychotherapy to help him control his berserker rages.[115] As a Department H operative, he returned to espionage and served primarily in Siberia and the Western Pacific, like Asia's Pacific Rim and its adjacent islands, including Japan. He accepted deadly and brutal assignments that no other agent would, and he soon rose to Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces.[116] Eventually, Romulus or his proxies contacted Wolverine, who received secret orders to facilitate Romulus interests even while on Department H missions.

After the Fantastic Four's debut, Hudson steered the Department H's resources to form a super-team sponsored by the government. He nominated Wolverine for leadership of this team, which was called the Flight. Contemplating the wisdom of this move, Wolverine temporarily returned to Madripoor to reunite with Seraph. He helped her and Viper, her new student, against Sabretooth, probably a case of infighting in Romulus' forces. Seraph sacrificed her life for Wolverine, but before dying, she made him promise to help Viper in the future. Seraph's heroism influenced Wolverine to agree to Hudson's proposal, although he also continued espionage missions abroad.[117]

When a 40th century time-traveler called D'von Kray invaded Canada trying to hunt fellow time-traveler Cable, Wolverine captured Kray and turned him over to Department H. Hudson hoped Kray's technology could empower super-agents, but Kray soon escaped and resumed tracking Cable, pursued by Wolverine. Kray was defeated by Wolverine and Cable, and Cable became a mercenary whom Wolverine encountered during select missions.[118] After this, Wolverine worked with CIA agent Rick Stoner to retrieve one of Hudson's prototype empowered-armor suits, stolen by Hydra.[119] Meanwhile, Hudson subjected William Nowlan, a convicted murderer, to experimental procedures to manifest superhuman powers. Wolverine, maybe remembering his Weapon X experimentation, warned Hudson that Nowlan, now called Bedlam, might prove uncontrollable. His prediction accurate, Wolverine assisted Hudson in placing the insane Bedlam in suspended animation.[120] Months after the Avengers' debut, Wolverine recruited Canadian Detective Sean Bernard to be a member of the Flight. As Groundhog, Bernard wore Hudson's Guardian armor. Some weeks later, the criminal Egghead led superhuman mercenaries to extort funds from Canada, threatening via a nuclear warhead. Wolverine led Flight trainees against Egghead and his minions, and even though the mission succeeded, trainee Saint Elmo died, Groundhog resigned, and some other trainees proved unsuited for such missions. Hudson, taking notice of this, divided the Flight into three divisions of increasing proficiency: Gamma Flight, Beta Flight and Alpha Flight.[121]

Later, on an espionage assignment, Wolverine went to Vladivostok, Russia, where he worked with Nick Fury before him being appointed director of SHIELD. While Alpha Flight's preparation continued, Wolverine traveled to Japan to seek Ogun's advice, but he found out that Ogun had surrendered himself to dark magic and he was now an assassin, a role into which he intended to enslave Wolverine.[122] Escaping this situation and deeply disturbed, Wolverine vowed to never return to Japan.

As Wolverine prepared to publicly debut as a super hero, he was kidnapped by the Leader, as were Hercules and Karkas, all of whom the Leader intended to use against the Hulk. Wolverine and the other prisoners escaped, but coincidentally the Hulk arrived in Canada shortly before Wolverine.[123] The Canadian military mobilized to fight the Hulk, but Wolverine received orders from Romulus to attract an unidentified party's attention by fighting the Hulk. Wolverine started a battle with the Hulk and a Wendigo.[3] Wolverine's speed and maneuverability proved to be a match for the two plodding powerhouses, but after realizing Hulk was a more formidable opponent, he changed tactics. Teaming up with Hulk to take out the Wendigo, Hulk threw the Wendigo into a patch of trees and Wolverine then delivered the finishing blow. The Hulk and Wolverine kept on fighting, and as Hulk had by now grown so enraged that Wolverine's adamantium claws failed to penetrate Hulk's skin, he finally managed to knock Wolverine out.[124] Back on his feets and despite his protests to keep fighting the Hulk, Wolverine was ordered to return to Department H while the Hulk was knocked out with a gas bomb and captured. [125] Still slated to take leadership of Alpha Flight, Wolverine spent weeks completing some espionage missions, even when various factors made him increasingly troubled by his service to Department H.

Joining the X-Men

Wolverine Vol 3 73 70th Anniversary Variant Textless

Logan becomes Wolverine

During his leadership of Alpha Flight, Wolverine was approached by Charles Xavier, attracted by his fight with the Hulk (as Romulus expected), who was looking for mutants to help his students, the X-Men, to escape from the island-being known as Krakoa. Wolverine resigned from Department H to accompany Professor Xavier and rescue the captured X-Men.[126] Wolverine, under Romulus' instructions, tried to assassinate Xavier, but he broke Romulus' hold on Wolverine by blocking the effects of his programming. Neither man knew their enemy's identity at the time. After Krakoa was defeated, Wolverine decided to stay with the X-Men, at the School for Gifted Youngsters, with fellow new recruits Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Thunderbird, and Banshee, as the original members left to pursue a normal life.[127]

Logan remained with the X-Men for quite some time, but a rivalry grew between him and Cyclops, one of the reasons being that he had fallen for Scott's girlfriend, telekinetic telepath Jean Grey, who soon rejoined the group.[128] Despite decades of hard-earned cynicism and at first skeptical of Xavier's hope for mutant and human coexistence, Wolverine began to respect his ideals, determination and goals, and grew to be a loyal and trusted member of the X-Men. Wolverine also developed a strong friendship with Nightcrawler.[129]

When the X-Men traveled to Agarashima, Japan, the first time for Wolverine since breaking with Ogun, he met Lady Mariko Yashida and aided her cousin, former X-Man Sunfire, in battling Moses Magnum. Although she was unable to requite his love, Wolverine fell in love with Lady Mariko, heir to an extremely powerful Yakuza family in Tokyo. Initially frightened, Mariko was soon set at ease by Wolverine, who was attracted to her gentle demeanor, and both fell in love.[130] The X-Men departed, but they were diverted to Calgary, Alberta, where they battled James Hudson, now calling himself Vindicator, aided by Alpha Flight, who wanted to arrest their former would-be leader. Wolverine surrendered to the Canadian team, but somehow escaped and returned to the mansion with his team.[131]

After Wolverine and Nightcrawler sneaked into the Hellfire Club, the Phoenix fell under Mastermind and the Hellfire Club's control and transformed into the Black Queen.[132] After the X-Men battled the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle, Phoenix underwent another transformation into the Dark Phoenix and soared through the universe, where she devoured an entire star and the five billion inhabitants of one of its planets.[133] When Phoenix returned to Earth, she threatened to kill everyone, but Professor Xavier was able to keep Phoenix under control and helped her will herself back to normal. The X-Men were then teleported away by the Shi'ar.[134] The Shi'ar Empire had witnessed Dark Phoenix consuming the star and the X-Men were forced to battle with the Imperial Guard over Phoenix's fate. The battle triggered her transformation into Dark Phoenix once more. Phoenix understood that she would never be able to fully control the dark hunger inside and sacrificed herself on the Moon.[135]

Wolverine later made the first change to his costume and journeyed to Canada to make things right with Alpha Flight and Department H, accompanied by Nightcrawler. Together with Alpha Flight, they battled a Wendigo.[136] Logan grew closer to his friends and even dared Nightcrawler to walk down the main street of Salem Center undisguised, in his natural shape and took the underage Colossus to bars. Logan also aided Spider-Man in battling Mentallo.[137] Later, the Brood retaliated by implanting embryos in all of the X-Men, but Logan's healing factor and Storm's new connection to an Acanti saved them all.[138] The X-Men returned home to battle the Brood Queen that was inside of Professor Xavier and saved his life by transplanting his mind into a cloned body.[139]

After the X-Men watched a televised debate, between Professor X and Reverend William Stryker, they received news that Cyclops, Storm, and the Professor had died in a car accident. While investigating the scene of the accident, the X-Men were attacked by the Purifiers and rescued by Magneto. After capturing their attackers, the X-Men and Magneto tortured them for information and rescued Kitty, who was being pursued by Purifiers. After arriving at Stryker's base, the X-Men and Magneto rescued Cyclops and Storm and Magneto resuscitated them. Professor X was taken to Madison Square Garden, where he was attached to a machine that, using his brainpower, would kill all living mutants. Magneto, with his psi-shielded helmet, was able to distract the Professor enough for the X-Men to destroy the machine. Televised, Cyclops entered into a debate with Stryker about his actions and Stryker pulled a gun, attempting to kill Kitty. Before he could fire, Stryker was shot-down, by a police officer. Later at the mansion, Professor Xavier admitted that Magneto was right and began to accept his offer to join, until Scott stopped him and stated that he believed in the Professor's dream and will see it come true.[140] Following Storm, Kitty, and Colossus, the X-Men battled Dracula again, this time Logan was bitten by Dracula and attacked Cyclops until Rachel van Helsing destroyed Dracula. Logan stopped Storm from assisting Rachel in suicide, per Rachel's request, stating that killing was his profession and while embracing her, drove a wooden steak through her heart.[141]

Engaged to Mariko

After investigating the return of his letters to Mariko, Logan learned that she had been married to an abusive husband, Noburo Hideki. Logan intended to kill her husband, but was then drugged and challenged to a duel of wooden swords by Mariko's father, Lord Shingen. During the duel, Logan was soundly beaten and humiliated in front of Mariko, due to the poisoning and Shingen using deadly pressure points. Logan then threw the sword and unsheathed his claws, only to be beaten more and revered as an "animal cast in a semblance of human form", for using deadly force in a non-lethal duel. With this act, Logan had dishonored himself to Mariko and was cast into the streets, where he was rescued by Yukio, later his close friend and sometimes lover. After being attacked by the Hand, Yukio manipulated Logan into helping her, which led to further embarrassment in front of Mariko. Upon realizing his deceit, Logan took the fight directly to Shingen. After Yukio killed Mariko's husband, Wolverine was forced to kill Lady Mariko's father, Lord Shingen, in a duel. Afterward, Mariko gave Logan the Clan Yashida Masamune sword, stating he was worthy. Forged 800 years ago by the supreme sword-smith Masamune, the sacred blade represented everything that was best and most noble in the family and the samurai, the lord’s champion, who wielded it. With the deaths of her father and husband, Mariko was named head of Clan Yashida. Logan stayed with her, and they later announced their engagement.[142]

Before the wedding service, Viper and Mariko's half-brother Silver Samurai poisoned the X-Men and battled Logan over control of Clan Yashida, from Mariko. At first enraged at seeing Rogue had joined the X-Men, Logan gained her respect after she saved the life of Mariko, by jumping in front of a shot from Viper intended for her. Mariko and Logan became estranged, due to the honor customs of her family, as well as the manipulations of the villain Mastermind, and Logan returned the Masamune sword to her.[143] After the X-Men defeated Mastermind, Mariko returned the honor sword to him and stated that she had to break her Clan's criminal connections. Mariko felt that she could not marry Wolverine until she did this.[144] The X-Men again battled with Mastermind, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and the Morlocks.[145]

Meeting Amiko

Weeks later, the X-Men battled a giant dragon when they were teleported to Japan. Unable to save a dying woman, Wolverine vowed to protect her daughter, Amiko Kobayashi.[146] Logan initially left Amiko in the care of Mariko and the X-Men next battled Selene.[147] Amiko would eventually become Wolverine's foster daughter.[69]

Saving Kitty Pryde and Facing Ogun

Following a distress call from teammate Kitty Pryde, Wolverine traveled to Japan.[148] Kitty was then captured and put under the mental control of Ogun. Ogun mentally controlled her, transforming her body and soul as he had originally intended to do to Wolverine.[122] After arriving in Japan, Kitty was sent to kill Wolverine and injured him greatly,[149] but with help from Yukio, she was restored. Wolverine undertook a crash program to teach Kitty's body, just as Ogun had taught her mind, to become skillful enough in the Japanese martial arts to contend against Ogun and to help her overcome his evil.[150] Kitty went to face Ogun herself, who was attempting to kill Mariko and Amiko to punish Wolverine. After being defeated by Ogun, he offered Kitty, calling herself Shadowcat, to join him or die. At that time, Wolverine came to her rescue.[69] Sadly, Wolverine was also overwhelmed and the two of them sat helplessly at Ogun's mercy. In a turn of events, Kitty informed Wolverine that she was scared until he arrived and when he apologized, she stated that she did not want an apology, but life. At that moment, Wolverine turned the battle and defeated Ogun and Kitty regained her innocence that Ogun had taken. After killing Ogun, although his spirit survived, Logan and Kitty became very close friends, with her as a near-foster daughter to him.[151]

Rachel Summers and The Morlock Massacre

Later, Logan was attacked by Lady Deathstrike and her first Reavers and he was aided by Katie Power.[152] Unable to heal on his own, Wolverine was taken by the X-Men to the Morlock Healer and his teammate Phoenix attempted to telekinetically heal him. Rachel opened her mind to Wolverine's and, soon after, Rachel decided to kill Selene for her attack when she first arrived in the mainstream timeline. Wolverine, mentally sensing Rachel's intentions, stabbed Rachel in the chest to prevent her from vengefully murdering Selene.[153] Logan later justified his actions by saying that he was affraid that the murder of Selene would have made Rachel lose control of the Phoenix force, turning her into the Dark Phoenix.[154]

The X-Men attempted to rescue the Morlocks after the Marauders began to indiscriminately massacre them and, after the team was defeated, Wolverine was charged with staying behind and bringing a prisoner, where he faced Sabretooth.[155]

Wolverine and Captain America

Logan assisted Captain America in defeating Overrider and his adamantium-coated robot TESS-1, who were attempting to fire all of America's nuclear missiles and send them into the sea. Due to Wolverine's disrespect and brash methods, Captain America stated that the X-Men better not ever get tired of him, because the Avengers would never have him.[156]

Jean Grey Lives!?

Wolverine and Storm investigated the recently bombed home of Sara Bailey and Logan sensed Scott Summers (Cyclops) and, the thought dead, Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), which sent him into a berserker rage as he began to search for the woman he secretly loved.[157]

Crystal of Ultimate Vision

On the anniversary of his wedding to Mariko, the team was abducted by Horde, to use as his lackeys to retrieve the Crystal of Ultimate Vision, of which he wore a shard on his forehead. The X-Men were sent to the Citadel of Light and Shadow, where the crystal was hidden. As the X-Men progressed through it, the citadel created illusions of each of their most powerful desires. Only Wolverine, Storm, and Psylocke were able to resist. Wolverine reached the Crystal and Horde cut him down and removed his heart as a trophy. However, a lone drop of Logan's blood splattered on the Crystal, which gave out enough energy for Wolverine to be restored. Empowered to godhood, Wolverine plucked the crystal shard from Horde's forehead and the tyrant quickly aged and crumbled to dust within seconds. Wolverine rejected the god-like power and returned the X-Men and their friends home, ensuring that the human race would be able to evolve to its full potential.[158]

Charlemagne

After the deaths of ex-KGB agents all over Manhattan, Logan was reminded of an old freelance operative from the Cold War, Charlemagne. The last time Logan had seen Charlie, she was working in West Berlin. It was a mission that Logan had protested, but Charlie insisted and her handler double-crossed her. Charlie called for Logan's help and he understood that it was serious. After fifty Soviet operatives couldn't take them down, they sent in KGB agents that had been undercover for years and Wolverine's berserker rage finished them all. After the slaughter, all that was left was a little heart shaped pendant. After leaving the X-Men in a time of need, Logan traveled to Potsdammer Platz, West Berlin, where two KGB agents blew their cover by killing muggers and Charlemagne killed them while Logan's back was turned.[15]

While in Kurfürstendamm, Logan got the scent of Spider-Man in civilian clothing and deciphered his secret identity. Logan warned Spider-Man to stay away from Berlin and forget about Charlemagne, but when Spider-Man returned to his hotel, KGB agents killed Ned Leeds and were asking his involvement when Logan arrived and killed all of the agents and again warned Spider-Man to leave. Logan tracked Charlie to a steel mill just outside of East Berlin and the two stay together for a while. When the couple went to dinner at The Ganymed on Friedrich Strasse, Spider-Man arrived to inform them that everyone in the restaurant was an agent wanting to kill Charlie, a fact that Charlemagne and Wolverine already knew, and a gunfight broke out. After losing Charlie in the fight, Wolverine and Spider-Man attempted to track her down, by getting to her marks before she did, but were always one step behind. After the pair split, Charlemagne called Wolverine to a Soviet cemetery at Teptow and he understood that she wanted him to end her life, so that the Soviets wouldn't have the chance to torture her. After flinching, Wolverine pulled too much and Charlemagne was bleeding to death. At that time, Spider-Man arrived and attempted to stop Logan from killing her. A brutal fight broke out between the two. While on top of Spider-Man, Wolverine stated Spider-Man would have to use all of his strength to break Wolverine's neck, while he would just have to lash out his claws to kill Spider-Man. At that time, a government chopper arrived and the two split. In the confusion, Charlemagne sneaked up on Spider-Man, aware that he was tense, and he gave a punch of super strength, killing her. Charlie died in Wolverine's arms and the agents left. After giving Spider-Man a fake passport, the pair returned home.[15]

Fall of the Mutants

When Storm left to regain her powers, Wolverine led the X-Men and rescued Madelyne Pryor-Summers, Cyclops' wife that he had abandoned to a coma, from the Marauders. At this time, Logan aided Dazzler, O.Z. Chase, and Henry Gyrich with a drug dealing mutant, Vladimir Zaitsev. Tracking Storm, the X-Men arrived at Forge's Eagle Plaza, in Dallas, Texas, where they were attacked by the Freedom Force. After the initial battle, a rift opened in the sky of Dallas and a chaos ensued of different weather patterns right next to each other and beings and creatures from the past appearing and attacking. The X-Men and Freedom Force formed a temporary alliance with each other to save the citizens of Dallas, until Colossus, recently recovered, decided to enter Eagle Plaza. After gaining access into the Starlight Citadel, the X-Men battled the Adversary and, after Rogue absorbed his power and opened a portal to seal him in, gave their life to imprison the Adversary, with a spell used from Forge. However, the Omniversal Guardian, named Roma, restored the X-Men to life and freed the Adversary, under the notion that there could be no order without chaos. The events had been broadcast over a live television news feed and the world believed the heroes to be dead. After being resurrected, the X-Men decided to use the opportunity to go underground and keep their rebirth secret.[159]

The X-Men resurfaced in Australia, where they defeated the Reavers, who were holding Jessán Hoan as a hostage. They released Jessán and claimed their base and teleporter, Gateway, a mute, mutant aborigine with the ability to create gates with his bullroarer. Roma appeared and presented them with the Siege Perilous, a gem that created a portal which granted any person who walked through it judgment and a new chance at life, with a new career, home, and so forth and had magically made them invisible to any sort of mechanical perception.[160] Around this time, Logan ordered a new armor costume for Psylocke from Landau, Luckman & Lake.

Patch

After finding Dave Chapel in the desert tortured and dying from exposure, Wolverine returned to Madripoor, perhaps the first time since Seraph's death, to the Princess Bar, and saved O'Donnell from thugs of a crime boss, Roche, while searching for "the Tiger."[161] While at the bar, Logan realized that he was being watched and confronted the woman, who turned-out to be Jessán Hoan.[162] After a brief battle with Jessán, Wolverine was beaten by Sapphire Styx and Razor-Fist and delivered to Roche.[163] After surviving torture from Inquisitor, Wolverine escaped and was brutally attacked by Razor-Fist, who stabbed him in his throat and torso and left him for dead.[164] Wolverine was rescued from a harbor and looked after by Jessán.[165] After healing, Wolverine began wearing an eye patch, to keep the resurrection of the X-Men a secret, and learned that Jessán was in fact Tyger Tiger and vowed to aid her in overthrowing Roche and taking his place as the Madripoor crimelord.[166] After defeating Razor-Fist, Wolverine and Tyger Tiger rescued O'Donnell, killed Roche, and Wolverine declared that he would become Tyger's conscience to remind her that if she became like Roche, he would come for her. After stating that he did not like crime lords, he let her decide her life and to allow Tyger Tiger to choose her own path. Tyger responded that he had won her heart and the two kissed.[167]

While rescuing an agent of Mariko's, Kojima Noburo, Logan killed Banapur Khan and his pirates and found-out about the Cult of the Black Blade's quest to steal the Muramasa Blade, a blade that all who wielded were possessed by its demonic essence, except for the one warrior destined to be its true master. Returning to Madripoor, Logan saved Lindsay McCabe, who he met while the X-Men lived in San Francisco with Jessica Drew, but didn't recognize him, due to his Patch identity.[168] After intentionally holding back in a fight with the Silver Samurai, Patch chased Jessica, who had been corrupted by the sword, through the streets of Madripoor, until he caught the blade with his bare hands and defeated her, claiming the sword. Holding the sword, a voice came from within the Black Blade, telling Patch that he and the Blade were destined to be one.[169] The blade transformed Patch's clothing to a leather ninja outfit and he attempted to sacrifice Jessica. Patch was tracked to the Cult's hide-out and Lindsay stopped him from killing Jessica, by snipping him in the head. After fighting the Silver Samurai, Patch fought the influence of the blade and the Samurai left with the sword.[170]

Scorched Land

The X-Men next investigated a Brood Star-shark that Havok had found and tracked the source to Harry Palmer, who was unaware he was infected and had made an entire crèche of mutant hosts. The X-Men were too conflicted with killing the human hosts and Wolverine was captured and implanted with an embryo again. Once again, Logan's healing factor fought-off the transformation in time for him to kill Temptress, freeing Psylocke, and kill Harry, ending the Brood threat.[171] Following Storm, who abruptly left in the middle of the night, the X-Men tracked her to the Savage Land. Upon arrival, the Savage Land was scorched and barren and the X-Men battled Garrok, in the armor of Terminus. After the initial battle, Longshot was lost and Wolverine followed him to another dimension. Storm's Cameo Crystal opened a portal to M'Rinn's dimension, where the Fall People escaped to. Together with M'Rinn's people, the High Evolutionary, and the Fall People, the X-Men separated Garokk from Terminus and, with his sacrifice, restored the Savage Land.[172]

Genosha

After Maddie went missing, the X-Men battled the Press Gang and Genoshan Magistrates, where Logan and Rogue were captured and taken to Genosha.[173] While in captivity, Logan and Rogue were stripped of their powers, by Wipeout and contained, until Rogue escaped and rescued Logan.[13] Logan and Rogue followed Phillip Moreau to the Mutates' camp, until they were attacked and the X-Men arrived to rescue them.[174]

Inferno

Later, Havok tracked the Marauders in the Alley, and the X-Men ambushed them. The Marauders fled and, as the X-Men gave chase, they found themselves also battling a demonic invasion of New York, slowly becoming demonic themselves.[175] Wolverine recognized familiar scents and the X-Men confronted X-Factor, the original X-Men, harassing Madelyne and her baby. After Logan forcibly kissed Jean, Madelyne instigated a battle between the X-Men and X-Factor, having the X-Men under her demonic influence and believing that X-Factor was attempting to kidnap Nathan Summers, her and Scott's child. After the demon N'Astirh attacked, the X-Men and X-Factor combined efforts to defeat him, assuming that he was controlling Madelyne, calling herself the Goblin Queen, and Havok, calling himself the Goblin Prince.[176]

At that moment, Marvel Girl was captured, by Maddie, and another battle was instigated between the X-Men and X-Factor. The Goblin Queen attempted to sacrifice baby Nathan atop the Empire State Building to permanently open a gateway between Earth and the demonic Limbo. The Goblin Queen locked herself, Nathan, and Jean inside a psionic barrier. Both the X-Men and X-Factor's combined efforts seemed to be futile in an effort to break through the telekinetic bubble. The invasion was thwarted after Madelyne committed suicide in combat with Jean, attempting to kill everyone in her power, but the X-Men and X-Factor protected each other while Jean protected Nathan Christopher.[177] After Madelyne's death, Jean began to scream in pain and Storm ordered Psylocke to take Scott and the X-Men into her mind, where Mr. Sinister was attempting to erase all of Jean's memories, until Jean defeated him on the Astral Plane. Following Mr. Sinister's psychic trail, Marvel Girl tracked him to the School for Gifted Youngsters and the X-Men and X-Factor were ambushed by the Marauders. While interrogating Malice/Polaris, Mr. Sinister destroyed the school.[178] While the X-Men and X-Factor battled Sinister and Malice, Wolverine defeated Sabretooth and Sinister attempted to claim Marvel Girl, but Cyclops seemingly killed Sinister with an unchecked optic blast.[179]

Wolverine and Havok

Attempting to comfort Havok after the recent loss of both the women he loved, Wolverine suggested that the men of the X-Men go to a bar in Sydney, taking the idea from Dazzler who took all of the women out. While at the bar, the four X-Men stopped an alien invasion of the many aliens in the Conquest.[180] Shortly after, Wolverine and Havok were vacationing in Mexico and saved a woman from terrorist attackers.[181] The woman was actually Scarlett McKenzie and was working for the Russian scientist, Dr. Neutron (Meltdown), who wanted to use Havok as a means to absorb the entire energy of a breaking down atom reactor and transmute it into himself.[182] Scarlett gave Alex Summers false information that terrorists were trying to sabotage the plant and when he ventured into the heart of the reactor, he found it shortly before reaching critical limit. The timely arrival of Wolverine prevented a full disaster and after Logan killed the scientist, Alex redirected the nuclear radiation into space. For Alex's sake, Logan kept Scarlett's betrayal secret, as he was still trying to get over the back-plotting of Madelyne.[183]

Crime War in Madripoor

At this time, Logan left the X-Men with no explanation and returned to Madripoor. After following the scents of suspects for a murder case, Patch ran into Karma, of the New Mutants, working for her uncle, who was attempting to overthrow Tyger Tiger, and made an uneasy ally with Police Chief Tai. After informing Tyger that he would not assassinate or kidnap for her, Patch and Tyger were beaten by Roughouse and Bloodsport and rescued by Karma.[184] Patch left Tyger with Jessica, Lindsay and Chang (who was killed by Roughouse and Bloodsport) while he destroyed General Nguyen Ngoc Coy's opium supplies, where he encountered the Harriers.[185] After disrupting Coy's drug activities, Patch took the fight directly to Coy and battled and defeated Roughouse and Bloodsport, while rescuing Lindsay, Jessica and Tyger. Patch had General Coy at his mercy, until Prince Baran intervened and,[186] thanks to Lindsay, considered them all honored guests of his. The Prince offered that Tyger and General Coy worked together, to stop a power vacuum and warzone in Madripoor and Patch convinced Tyger to accept. [187]

Next, Patch began his quest to save Karma from her uncle's service, but was sidetracked when he learned that disrupting General Coy's drug activities planted a target on the General's head and Karma needed him to help her find her missing brother and sister. Patch accompanied Xi'an Coy Manh to the airport to witness the arrival of Joe Fixit, who Patch smelled right away and recognized as the Hulk.[187] Patch went-on to use Joe to disrupt General Coy's drug and slave operations.[188] Later, Police Chief Tai informed Patch that he was aware the Patch and Wolverine were one and the same. Remembering his first "birthday gift" from Creed, Patch saved a couple from being mugged and was later targeted by the thugs. After escaping an attempted hit, Patch tracked them to the Princess Bar only to find them dead and a note from Creed reading "Nobody kills you but me - especially today."[54]

The Gehenna Stone Affair

Patch returned to San Francisco with Jessica, when Archie Corrigan asked for help with his mentally unbalanced brother, Burt Corrigan, who was in danger of losing his inheritance. While at the trail, Burt burst through the window, dressed as Indiana Jones, screaming that he needed help from Ba'al.[189] The demon Ba'al was trying to collect all the pieces of a stone called the Gehenna Stone which contained Ba'al soul in order to create his own vampire army. One of the pieces was detained by Burt hence why Ba'al army was trying to kill him.

Patch, Archie, Burt and Jessica managed to fight back against Ba'al army and escape [190] but soon after they met Ba'al himself and Patch tried to take him down but failed and as a result Ba'al recovered the piece of the Gehesha Stone from Burt and decided to head to Madripoor in order to retrieve the last fragment. Despite the fact that Archie wanted to let go of this madness, Patch decided to go after Ba'Al and his army and stopped them once and for all.[191] During the flight towards Madripoor Patch now wearing the Wolverine costume, fought against Ba'al again and this time had the upper hand and crash down his plane.[192]

After finally landed in Madripoor, Patch learned that Lindsay, Jessica, O'Donnell always knew that he was Wolverine and that the streets of Madripoor are now full of vampires but also Tai and the Madripoor police confiscated another piece of the stone that O'Donnel used to possess and gave it to Prince Baran. It's also revealed that Ba'al survived and struck an alliance with Prince Baran and let his army of "half vampires" invaded the streets of Madripoor.[193]

In the end, Ba'al crossed the prince and retrieved the last piece of the stone, now complete he could create "true" vampires but Wolverine finally managed to catch up and fought Ba'al one last time. Ba'al reconized Wolverine as the reincarnation of the warrior of the legend also known as the "Hand of God" that killed him eons ago and shattered his soul. An angry Ba'al tried to kill him but Wolverine managed to destroy the stone and killed Ba'al once and for all.[12]

The Jungle Adventure

When the X-Men temporarily relocated to the Australian Outback, Wolverine took the runaway mutant Jubilee under his wing, after she saved his life from an attack by Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers.[194] Jubilee eventually became like a daughter to him, much like Kitty before. While based in Australia, a man would ask Wolverine to go to the Savage Land, where he encountered a tribe of humans. Arriving in a lightweight plane, the tribe believed him a god, with the exception of Gahck, the tribe's female chieftain. Gahck challenged Wolverine to combat, and once it was established that he wasn't a god, he offered to help their hunting parties. Logan subsequently started a relationship with Gahck. When members of the tribe were captured, Wolverine discovered that a robotic Tyrannosaurus Rex would attack the tribe and take their members to a secret base. Wolverine discovered that experiments were performed on the tribe members by Apocalypse, and after freeing himself and the captured Gahck, he battled Apocalypse, though it turned out to be a robot. In the Apocalypse robot's lab, Logan learned that the real Apocalypse was the man who had told him to journey to the Savage Land. After defeating the robot, Wolverine left the Savage Land, despite Gahck's feelings for him. Unknown to Logan, Gahck was pregnant and a few months later their son was born.[195]

The Shiva Scenario

Greatly troubled by his lost memories, Wolverine investigated the abandoned Weapon X Facility in Canada where he had been transformed years before. There, he started having flashabck of his time with Team X and from when he was adbducted by the Weapon X program.[196] After learning that his memories were tampered and both Xavier and Jean tried to help him, Logan was overwhelmed and almost lost his mind. Professor Xavier told him that the next time they tried it could be worse and Logan could regressed and become an animal again. This revelation angered Logan and he tore off his brown costume and said he wasn't an animal but an X-Man.[14] As a result Logan stopped wearing his brown costume and decided to wear his original blue and gold uniform again.[25]

Logan then headed to Windsor, Ontario and infiltrated an Old Weapon X warehouse where some of his fake memories were created, while here he inadvertently activated the artificial intelligence Shiva, which was designed to kill rogue Team X members and the top name on their list was Wolverine. Logan managed to defeat the Shiva robot but another one took his place and Logan discovered that he couldn't defeat it the same way twice, but Logan still had the upper hand when suddently it blasted him with a mind probe that makes Logan relived every pain, injury and moment of agony. While the fight between Logan and Shiva was watched by both Carol Hines and the Professor Thorton who appeared to still be alive but shortly after Silver Fox revealed herself to both Hines and Thorton and she killed Thorton with her claws. Logan discovered that Thorton was dead and that Hines was still alive but also that before dying Thorton activated all the remaining Shiva robots and their main target was none other than Sabretooth. While Logan didn't care about Sabretooth's fate the X-Men worried about the other targets on the Shiva's kill list.

As a result of learning that many of his memories were implants, Wolverine became much darker which worried both Xavier and the X-Men.[25]

The Crunch Conundrum

After the events of Windsor, Professor Xavier and the X-Men decided to check Logan's mental by putting through several simulations in the Danger Room and discovered that Logan was slowly letting his animal taking to the point of howling. Once the simulation was over, Logan decided to head to the Cloud 9 Motel where he met Mystique. In the morlock tunnels, Albert managed to find rebuilt Elsie Dee's body and their bomber, they were then joined by the Hunter in the Darkness. Both Albert and Elsie Dee decided to bring the Hunter back to Canada until Elsie-Dee discovered a flux in the space continuum. Back at the motel, Mystique asked for Logan's help against Spiral who lost her mind and begged Logan to not say her name out loud or she would appear. Logan didn't believe Mystique and said Spiral name and she suddenly appeared. [197]

Spiral wanted to warn them of an imminent danger when they were attacked by Plasma Wraiths who they managed to defeat. Spiral then told them there was a problem with space time and that everything was converging to the Crunch (basically the end of time where the universe collapses into itself and end). To fix this situation, Spiral created a vortex that transported her, Logan and Mystique to the future but also Logan's bike and Jubilee who was following Logan. Now at the Citadel at the End of Time moments before the Crunch, Logan discovered that Mojo intended to exploit the Crunch for entertainment value. Jubilee who was also teleported to the Citadel faced against one of Mojo's slave: Abcissa wrap. In Canada, Elsie Dee and Albert discovered an ancient Native burial mound of bones but more surprisingly the remains of a Wolverine from another timeline. [197]

Back at the Citadel, Logan, Mystique and Spiral saw none other choice than using the missile created by Albert to destroy Mojo while still letting the Crunch happened. Spiral and Mystique teleported to the present and in exchange for the missile, Elsie-Dee, Albert and the Hunter in the Darkness were transported to the past in order to continue their investigation about the remains of this Wolverine from another timeline. Albert fired the missile through the vortex and the trio was then sent to the past. After seeing the missile passing through the vortex Logan hoped on it and redirected it towards Mojo, at the same time, Jubilee discovered that Abcissa wrap was none other than a future version of herself who accepted to become Mojo's slave but Jubilee refused to become his slave and as a result Abcissa vanished. Jubilee then drove Logan's bike and saved him before riding out of the Vortex while the missile hit Mojo which allowed the Crunch to happen and preserved the universe. At the same time the remains of the Wolverine from the other timeline vanished too.

Logan then found himself at Four Freedoms Plaza playing poker until he received a call from Jubilee who was teleported to Japan with Logan’s bike and who was arrested for driving without a licence and having smuggled a bike in another country. [198]

Mariko's Death

After receiving Jubilee’s call, Logan quickly headed to Japan with Gambit (to whom Logan owed money after that poker’s game) but unfortunately because of his adamantium’s skeleton he was stuck at the airport security of Los Angeles. After putting a call to SHIELD, Logan was able to go on the plane but Logan’s clearance request set off the computers at Hydra and Silver Fox called in to one of Donald Peirce's final cyborgs named Cylla to go after him and eliminated him. After landing in Japan, Logan and Gambit were attacked by the Hand that they managed to defeat, as a contingency plan the leader of the Hand Matsuo bailed Jubilee out of jail and kidnapped her. Jubilee met the assassin Reiko who was blinded by the Hand and who was tasked to kill her, in exchange Reiko would get her sights back but after Jubilee mentioned that she knew Logan, Reiko let her go as she was indebted to Logan. [199]

Logan and Gambit finally arrived at the police’s station but they were attacked by Cylla and several ninjas sent by Matsu'o Tsurayaba, thanks to the help of Sunfire they were able to defeat them but Cylla managed to run away. Shortly after Jubilee was found by Yukio who took her to her place while Reiko was promised amnesty with the Hand by Silver Fox if she helped her. [200]

After the fight at the police Logan and Gambit decided to head to house of the Yashida's Familly and discovered returned that the Clan Yashida was besieged by internal dispute. After Logan met Mariko and the Silver Samurai, the Hand attacked the house of the Yashida family forcing the Silver Samurai, Gambit and Logan to work together. Along the way Mariko gave Logan his old brown costume and he fought against Cylla again, this time defeating her. Unfortunately, both Silver Fox and Matsu'o formed an alliance and used Reiko to trick Mariko into being poisoned, after Reiko learned who was Mariko and what she did to the woman Logan loved she killed herself. Faced with a slow, painful death, Mariko asked Wolverine to end her life quickly and mercifully. Wolverine reluctantly complied.[201]

After the death of the woman he loved, Logan spent the next few days sitting at her grave, even under the rain and nothing Gambit or Jubilee have tried have made Wolverine want to leave. Suddenly after hearing the Silver Samurai said the word “wraith” Logan had a memory flash of the last mission he did with Team X in Berlin that resulted in the death of Janice but now he also remembered the man named Wraith. After experiencing this memory, Logan agreed to leave but on the way to the airport he caught Matsuo’s scent. He quickly changed in his costume and faced Matsuo. Wolverine then vowed to Matsu'o that on each and every one of his birthdays he would slice off a body part until there was nothing of him left.[202] A promise that Wolverine would kept for years until Matsuo died.[203] [204]

The death of Mariko changed Wolverine's character significantly, making him even more disciplined and emotionally distant.[205]

Psi-Borg

Shortly after Mariko's death and having experienced yet another flashback Logan decided to investigate his past with Team X and finally found his old teammate John Wraith who triggered several of Logan's memories thanks to a Shiva's head and revealed that he managed to capture Sabretooth.[206] Afterwards Wraith revelead that he was worried that the age suppressor given to all Team X members was failing, Wraith's fears proved to be true as one of the members of the team namedMastodon died in front of them after the reversal of his age suppression factor. After being joined by Carol Hines in his quest, Logan discovered that Silver Fox was still alive[207] and to his surprise, Silver Fox despised him for something she believed he had done.[95] Tracing Mastodon's death to Aldo Ferro, now Psi-Borg, they were overwhelmed by his illusions, resulting in Carol Hine's death from an heart attack and in Silver Fox death who was killed by Sabretooth, under Psi-Borg's control, before Wolverine could figure out what she believed he had done. Sabretooth and Ferro both escaped afterwards leaving Wolverine with more questions than answers.[208] [209]

Going Down Memory Lane

After his encounter with the mutant assassin Omega Red and the revelations from Aldo Ferro, Logan began to question the memories he possessed, but his searches to find his true identity and memories proved fruitless. Logan possessed memories of being a samurai in Japan, a mercenary operative for the CIA, and a "wild man" in the Canadian wilderness. He also had remembered romances with Mariko and Silver Fox. Wolverine suffered a mental breakdown which stemmed from the deaths of Mariko and Silver Fox and Weapon X's mental tampering.[210] Nick Fury decided to help Logan and revealed to him that his memory with Silver Fox was real as Logan was brought to their old Cabin in Canada, Logan then decided to bury her in this place next to the cabin where they used to live.[210]

Professor Xavier decided to help Logan by unlocking a memory about "Terry Adams", but the process proved to be too much and Logan started to lose grasp with the reality and thought he was back to the 1960s during his team X days and that he had to finish his mission.[211] Logan then head to Russia where he met a young woman named Elena Ivanova who told him she could help him find what he was looking for. At the same time the X-Men managed to find Maverick and learned that "Terry Adams" is not a person but the codename of a mission in Russia that took place in former Soviet space center in Tyuratam[212]

Soon after arriving at the former Soviet space center, Logan was able to find the super soldier created during the Cold War and more precisely during the space race between the US and the USSR: Epsilon Red He revealed that Logan was sent to kill him at the time but Logan couldn't do it despite Epsilon begging Logan to kill him because after the experimentations he suffered he couldn't feel anything anymore not even the touch of his wife but his wife on the other begged Logan to spare his life. Before Logan could make a choice, Sabretooth told him the mission was aborted and Logan left both Epsilon Red and his wife alive.

Epsilon Red then used his powers to burn the memory implants from Logan's mind and unlock his memories but unfortunately the process was only half successful and some of Logan's memories blocks proved to be impossible to break. Logan then decided to help Epsilon Red to go "home" which means to the stars so he helped him him smuggle aboard a space shuttle so that he could live among the stars. It's later revealed that the daughter of Epsilon Red named Elena managed to recover some memorues from Logan's mind thanks to her latent psi powers and explained that after Logan left during the original Team X mission, Epsilon Red begged Sabretooth to kill him but Creed refused and instead killed his pregnant wife in front of him just to make him suffer even more. As a result Helena was born by cesarian and swore revenge on Sabretooth.[213]

Due to extensive memory implants given to Logan through the Weapon X Project, any or all of these memories are suspect. Logan has at least one memory of meeting Captain America in World War II while he was in the Canadian Army which has been verified as true.[28]

Wolverine's adamantium is removed by Magneto.

Magneto's Revenge

Ater Magneto unleashed an electromagnetic pulse across the earth which killed many innocent people, Xavier and the X-Men decided to infiltrate his space station and stopped him once and for all. Unfortunately for the X-Men, the fight didn't go as planned and as Magneto was about to kill Quicksilver, Wolverine intervened and slashed him with his claws and saved Pietro's life. Magneto fell to his knees but quickly retaliated and used his powers to tear the adamantium out of Wolverine's skeleton, causing extensive injuries.[214] These injuries overloaded Wolverine's healing factor for a time, and Logan also discovered that the claws that he believed a result of the Weapon X program were in fact part of his actual bone structure due to his mutation. As a result of his injuries and the loss of his healing factor, Logan left the X-Men for a time.[215]

The Dying Game

Logan travelled all around the world for a while, coming to terms with the loss of his adamantium and healing factor [216] and faced some of his greatest foes along the way such as Lady Deathstrike [217] and Bloodscream [83]. Logan then decided to go to Muir Island at the request of Kitty Pryde, that's when Logan met Zoe Culloden and was attacked by Cyber who broke his claws.[218] While on the run from Cyber, Zoe Culloden decided to pull out and gave a portable television to Logan about a video of Dr. Jaime Munoz, a scientist who had the DNA sample he received from the Weapon X program.[219] Dr. Munoz figured a way to bond the adamantium beta on the human bone, but he needs more information and experimentation and implores whoever volunteered the Weapon X program of the sample labelled "Logan X #23" to come out and lend his aid, telling Wolverine that he could save his life.[219] Unfortunately during the chase with Cyber, Logan was poisoned and began hallucinated and losing his mind, Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler managed to lure both Logan and Cyber to Muir Island where Logan was cured and Cyber imprisoned. [220]

Logan's condition worsened, sensing he was dying, Logan decided to put his affairs in order, he went to Japan and saved Amiko from her foster family and gave her to Yukio saying one last goodbye to both of them.[220] He then went to Canada to say goodbye to Heather and James Hudson [221] and helped them against a pack of lupine creatures similar to the Hunter in the Darkness.[222] His affairs in order, Logan returned to Muir Island after reveiving a telepathic call from Professor Xavier asking to rescue the captured X-Men during Phalanx invasion. Along the way he met again with Cyclops and Jean Grey, returning from their honeymoon (and secretly the future) and with Cable who also received a telepathic distress call from Professor Xavier. All of them teamed up and went to Tibet where they managed to free their teammates.[223] [224]

Shortly after Logan went to Madripoor with Gambit where they tracked Maverick who revealed he was dying from the Legacy Virus and wanted Logan to kill him. Logan refused and told him that's the coward way out and that she should not accept deafeat. Maverick left but also pointed that Logan should listened to his own advice and not let his own illness made him forget his responsabilities, Gambit agreed with Maverick and told to Logan that he should come back to the X-Men.[225] As a favor to his friend James Hudson, Logan then went back to California to check on Garrison Kane and his girlfriend Copycat but along the way Logan encountered the mercenary known as Deadpool and was almost killed during their fight. But fortunately his healing factor finally returned stronger than ever and saved him. Logan then went after Deadpool but he managed to ran away and after checking on Vanessa and Kane, Logan left them and returned to the X-Mansion.[226]

Before he could arrive at the X-Mansion Logan was confronted by the Ghost Rider who asked for his help against Ogun, and after defeating his old master Logan hit the road.[227] Shortly after Logan finally arrived at the X-Mansion, Sabretooth (who was a prisoner of the X-Men at the time that Xavier was trying to reform), managed to escape from his cell and as a result Wolverine confronted him. After a severe beatdown and hearing Sabretooth threatening to kill Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde and Jubilee Logan snapped and thrust one of his claws into Sabretooth's brain almost killing him.[228]

Feral Logan

Wolverine's victory against Sabretooth came at price as Logan could feel his feral nature slowly taking over and as a result he decided to live in the woods for a while.[229] Around this time Professor Xavier, Beast, and Heather Hudson conducted experiments on Wolverine. These showed that Logan's mutation was actually ongoing, and whilst his healing factor and senses would accelerate it would also cost him his humanity- for it would slowly change him into a bestial, wild, animal-like creature. It also turned out that the presence of the adamantium slowed his mutation process down; his healing factor treated it like a foreign substance in the body and tried constantly to expel it.[230]

While wandering in the woods, Logan found the unconscious body of Maverick who was attacked by an organization which managed to capture Deadpool in order to experiment on him. Maverick asked for Logan and warned him that he might be the next on the list, Logan agreed to help him and together they saved Deadpool and defeated Slayback. As a payback for saving him, Deadpool sent some samples of his cells to Beast in order to cure Maverick's condition but Beast told him there was nothing to do.[231]Shortly after, still living in the woods Logan was attacked by Kierrok and his army of N'Garai, with the help of Nightcrawler he managed to defeat them but the fight proved to be too much for Logan's sanity and he became more and more feral as a result which worried Nightcrawler.[231]

While he was hunting a deer, Logan was surprised by Sam Guthrie and after doing a race with him they decided to go for a drink, that's when they met the Juggernaut who was still suffering from deliriums after his fight with Onslaught.[232] Logan then decided to go see Jubilee and Generation X in order to train them but while here he was confronted by a Token that he managed to defeat. At the same time Tyler Dayspring sent his Dark Riders to Muir Island in order to free Cyber.[233] Soon after Sabretooth who finally healed from his previous battle with Logan escaped from his cell and almost killed Psylocke.[234] Logan had to travel to Little Asia and then to the Realm of the Crimson Dawn with Angel and Doctor Strange in order to retrieve the Crimson Dawn blood(a mystical life-giving elixir) and saved her life.[235] [236]

After this event, Logan finally decided to leave the woods for a while and went to Manhattan but to make sure nothing bad happened Guardian and Vindicator followed him. During his travel, Logan met Dirtnap, a mutant with the ability to absorb living beings and take on their forms. Dirtnap killed a young boy and tried to absorb Wolverine, but Logan's healing factor saved him and Dirtnap was forced to absorb a rat and ran away.[237] Soon after Logan decided to go camping with the X-Men but despite being with his friends Logan could feel how his perceptions of people were starting to change. How he was now viewing them in a different light and more especially as prey. At the same time Cyber was brought to Akaba where he was subdued by Tyler Dayspring and eaten alive by his death-watch beetles who ate his flesh and left only his adamantium behind.[238] Having learned of Cyber's escape, Logan decided to investigate and along the way he met the inter-dimensional pirateChimera. After defeating her, Logan ran into Zoe Culloden and Landau, Luckman and Lake [238] Logan headed back to Madripoor and discovered that Archie, O'Donnell and Rose Wu were all killed by someone using claws like him and that he was framed for the murders by Prince Baran and General Coy. After escaping from his cell thanks to Tyger Tyger's help and killing the murderers of his friends, Baran was killed by Coy and Coy was killed by Tyger Tyger. After meeting Dirtnap again along the way, Logan went back to the ruins old Landau Luckman and Lake office and went through a dimension portal towards Akaba where he met Zoe Culloden again.[239]

In Egypt, Zoe told Logan that his destiny was to find Tyler Dayspring a.k.a Genesis, she then left him to chase Chimera. All alone Logan met Jamil who led him to Genesis's citadel. Inside Logan smelled Dirtnap and attacked him but it was a trap and Genesis shoot Logan and put him in a water tank in order to bond Cyber's adamantium to his skeleton and made him his new horseman.[240] Worried about Logan, Sam Guthrie followed him to Egypt and after witnessing what Genesis was doing to Logan, he intervened. Sam was defeated and was about to be killed but to save his friend Logan decided to reject the adamantium and lost his humanity regressing to a feral like state. Logan killed all the Dark Riders and then brutally beat down Genesis and killed him too, knowing that he lost his mind Logan told Sam to tell Cable he was sorry for killing his son, he then disappeared. Elewhere Stick sensed that Logan lost his way and tasked Elektra Natchios to find him and helped him regained his sanity.[241] The X-Men also learned what happened to Logan and quickly tried to find him and help him especially Professor Xavier who already lost Sabretooth recently and he didn't want to Logan too.[242] At the same time, the feral Wolverine came across Ozymandias's prison and finally encountered the X-Men again and help them against Ozymandia's minions. Once the fight is over the X-Men took back Logan to the X-Mansion to help him while Elektra hided in the shadows followed them.[243] But the feral Wolverine couldn't stay at the institute and quickly escape, wandering on his own[244] until he was found by Elektra who quickly start to train him in order to get Logan back on his warrior path.[245]

Unfortunately soon after Professor Xavier fell under the influence of Onslaught and attacked the X-Men [246] and Logan decided to look for answers about the origins of Onslaught. Thanks to the help of Elektra and Gateway, Logan relieved the painful moment when Magneto removed his adamantium from the astral plane and discovered that after Magneto removed his adamantium, Xavier wiped his mind. But during their fight some essence of evil within Magneto reached out and infected Xavier with a darkness that began to grow and which turned him into Onslaught after a while. Logan blamed himself for what happened and seeing his older self made him missed being a man, but Elektra told him that's not true Logan was still a man.[247] Still dealing with the damages caused by Onslaught, Logan finally met Stick who gave him his final lesson: Logan was always been a man in the places that matter and he needed to accept it or Onslaught would kill him.[247] His training finally complete and back on the warrior path Logan joined the others heroes during their final battle against Onslaught.[248]

After dealing with the aftermath of this battle and making peace with Cable, Logan decided to finish his training, first they headed to Alberta where Logan buried Silver Fox to pay his respects and then to Elektra's home in Greece. In here Logan met Stavros who told him about his revenge quest against the murderers of Elektra's father and how only one of them was still alive, a man named Sawyer. But Elektra told him that revenge only brought misery and sometimes it was better to forget and forgive. Stravos also told Logan a story about a Corporal he respected during WWII, he didn't know his name, only his nickname: "Canada" and that he looked similar to Logan. During the night, Stravos revealed that he already found Sawyer but after what Elektra he decided to let him go but before Sawyer could leave, Logan caught him and warned him to never come back or to not got to the police or he would kill him. Umberknons to Logan, the corporal Stravos was talking about was Logan, but because of Logan feral appearance he didn't reconized him. His training finally complete, Logan left Greece and went to Japan.[26]

In Japan Logan decided to pay his respect to Mariko and then went to see both Amiko and Yukio, but to make sure he wouldn't affraid Amiko he used an image inducer to hide his apperance.[249] Unfortunately Amiko was captured by the leader of the Hand Akatora in order to be brainwashed and turned into a weapon. Logan saved her and despite Akatora's brainwashing disappeared after a while.[250] Shortly after Amiko decided to ran away from the temporary foster family Yukio turned her over to when she was on mission but after Yukio learned the news she quickly contacted Logan and both of them tried to find her. Logan managed to find her and learned that Amiko went on a quest towards the Golden temple where her mother brought her before she died.

Logan decided to disguise himself as a thief and help her on a journey towards this temple. After reaching their destination and discovering that the temple was only a ruin nowadays, Logan revealed his true identity to Amiko and told her that life is full of change and sometimes they are not for the best but not matter she must always remember mother and kept her memory alive. Amiko having finally learned her lesson decided to go back home with Logan.[251] Shortly after Logan helped Shaman against a demonic bear and thanks to the lessons of Elektra, Stick and the Professor Xavier Logan was able to defeat his foe not with his claws but his hands.[252]

Thanks to Elektra and Stick training and all those experiences Logan reverted back to his original physical appearance and decided to check on the X-Men.[253]

A Mysterious Box

At the mansion Logan found a strange wooden box with a device which showcased an hologram of Zoe Culloden who asked him to look after it and warned him that something big and dark was coming, and that the timelines are converging around him so he must be ready. Shortly after as as a final test an evil spirit appeared in the Danger Room and taunted him that he could resurrect Mariko in exchange of Logan's soul but Logan refused and stabbed him. Stick then appeared and said that Logan made the right choice and that he was on the right path. More determined than ever Logan took the mysterious wooden box, left the Mansion and headed to the city to prove he still could live as a man. But before leaving he promised to the X-Men he would come back to the Mansion once he was ready.[253]

Now in town with his wooden box, Logan was adjusting to this new life and helped Clive Gooch and Elen Bach against some street muggers. Thanking him for his help, they introduced him to Kristin the superintendent of a building and show him the Third eye café where they love to spend their time. Logan decided to rent a room from Kristin and to find some work at the building construction site where Helen worked.[254] Unfortunately a strange mime started to follow him around and tried to kill him, at the same time both Jean and Storm followed Logan and help him against this mime. The trio discovered that the mime was possessed by an evil spirit and Jean managed to excorcised him but the spirit flew away and took possession of Helen.[68]

In Helen's body, the evil spirit revealed himself to be the same spirit Logan encountered in the Danger Room previously. Logan decided to pursue the evil spirit while Jean and Storm protected the mysterious box, during his search Logan came across Daimon Hellstorm who warned him to protect the box at all cost and vanished. Soon after Logan was attacked by Lady Deathstrike who also wanted the box because it had a big signifiance to her and her family. During their fight, Logan discovered that Yuriko now possessed a cybernetic healing factor but after telling her that the box was given to him by Zoe Culloden, Yuriko decided to stop the fight as she whished to learn more about her and the box. Back at Logan's appartment Jean and Storm discovered that a strange light was coming out the box but they were soon attacked by the possessed Elen. Logan and Yuriko managed to lend a hand to Jean and Storm and Jean was able to free Elen, unfortunately the evil spirit took possession of Lady Deathstrike and used her new cybernetic healing factor to reshape her face into devil mask before running away. Logan reconized the evil spirt and told the X-Men that the spirit that he encountered in the Danger Room and who followed him here was Ogun all along. Jean noticed that Logan finally beat his feral regression and he was now back to his old self.[255]

The Wooden Box was never referenced again and its contents are still unknown even to this day.

Shortly after Logan now back with the X-Men was attacked and almost killed by Bastion as part of his Operation Zero Tolerance.[256] [257] Thanks to his healing factor, Logan survived and managed to free the X-Men and Jubilee.[258] [259] Unfortunately while fighting the sentinels Scott was infected by a bomb [260] but both Logan and Cecilia Reyes managed to save him.[261] After Bastion was arrested and the heroes that sacrificed their life against Onslaught finally made it back to our reality, Scott and Jean decided to leave the X-Men for a time while Logan stayed at the Mansion and helped the remaining members dealing with the aftermath of Bastion's attack.[262]

Marrying Viper

After dealing with both Bloodscream and Roughouse (who decided to become a vilain again)[263] and teaming up with Captain America [264], Logan was contacted by Viper, who invoked Logan's promise to Seraph many years before. Wolverine married Viper, giving her the status to become ruler of Madripoor. During the wedding Viper and Logan were attacked by Sabretooth who revealed that he now possessed an adamantium skeleton and claws.[117] As a result Sabretooth easily defeated Wolverine, broke his claws and claimed himself: "The King of the World"[265]. Thanks to the help of Kitty Pryde Logan managed to stop Sabretooth from taking over Madripoor leaving only Viper as the sole ruler of the Island for now.[266]

But Logan's defeat at the hands of Sabretooth shook him to the core and made him wondered if he still had his edge, to prove to himself he was still the best there is he travelled to the old Weapon X compound. But once he arrived he was quickly attacked by the Wendio, without any adamantium and with his claws still broken after his fight with Sabretooth Logan was no match for the Wendigo and only managed to scare his face which made the Wendigo ran away. Logan then lost consciousness.[267] Fortunately Logan managed to get back in shape thanks to the help of a young boy named Tommy but the Wendigo wanted revenge and tracked Logan again but this time using some gasoline and an axe Logan burned Wendigo face and made him ran away. Logan then understood that this fight was excatly what he needed in order to find the Wolverine from before Department H, before Weapon X, before the adamantium, not just Wolverine the animal but Wolverine the man! The fighter who could analyze his opponments and defeat them no matter how strong they are and that he didn't need any metal to do it.[267]

Now finally at peace with himself, Logan decided to resume his adventures but after returning to the X-Men and dealing with Magneto's return, him and the team were teleported to space by Ejulp.[268]

Horseman of Apocalypse

During this space adventure with the X-Men[269], Logan was subsequently kidnapped by the would-be conqueror Apocalypse and replaced by one of the Skrulls who infiltrated the X-Men.[270] Logan was then forced to fight the savage assassin Sabretooth for the mantle of the Horseman Death. Knowing that he might be able to resist Apocalypse's programming and that Sabretooth would be a very dangerous villain with the support of Apocalypse, Logan fought and defeated his nemesis. As a result, Apocalypse succeeded where Genesis had failed, rebonding adamantium to Wolverine's skeleton.[270]

As the horseman of Death, Logan completed several missions for Apocalypse and fought the Hulk. Meanwhile, the skrull that replaced him tried to create a rift between the X-Men and their mentor but during one mission but he was slain by the actual Wolverine. [271] After discovering that their teammate was a skrull, the X-Men found out that the real Wolverine was Apocalypse's horseman and decided to help him.[272] Under the control of Apocalypse, Wolverine fought the X-Men ferociously in his Death persona, but Psylocke, Archangel, Kitty Pryde and Jubilee helped him broke free from Apocalypse's control.[273]

Six months later, still dealing with the aftermath of being an Horseman of Apocalypse, Logan decided to go to Japan to check on Amiko and Yukio but was soon caught in a gang war.[274] He managed to put an end to this war and spent some time with both Amiko and Yukio [275], afterwards he joined the X-Men again [276] and witnessed the death of his friend Colossus who sacrificed his life in order to eradicate the legacy virus.[277] After the legacy virus was cured, Magneto amassed his army and decided to wave war on humanity and kidnapped the Professor Xavier, Logan teamed up with Cyclops (who was also recently under the influence of Apocalypse), in order to infiltrate Genosha and stopped him.[278][279]

Years after Magneto removed Wolverine's adamantium and almost killed him, Logan finally had his revenge when he stabbed Magneto and severly injured him which put an end to his war against humanity and left the island of Genosha in chaos.[280]

The Return of Weapon X and Ogun

Shortly after he met the psychopath known as Mister X who wanted to beat Logan to prove that he was the best there is.[281] After beating Logan[282] and telling him how much he enjoyed killing, Logan snapped and let the berserker took over. As a result Logan defeated Mr.X and almost killed him but he managed to run away thanks to his bodyguard named Blok and after being knocked out Logan had a strange vision of a demon.[283] Ever since he became a horseman, Logan had nightmares and visions of himself killing people and most notably the X-Men. Something wasn't right with his mind and after taking down a nest of broods, he tried to search for answers.[284]

It turns out that all those nightmares were caused by a new Weapon X program held by Malcolm Colcord [285] and thanks to some old Weapon X code, Colcord used Logan to do some recons and committed crimes but after Logan was forced to kill a politician, he broke free of the mindcontrol.[112] To get Logan's back under control, Colcord used his right hand man, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Brent Jackson to capture Logan and sent him to the Cage. While here, Logan was tortured by the wardens and almost eaten alive by the immortal monster Mauvais. [286] [287] [288] To free Logan, Colcord enlisted Sabretooth and infused his skeleton and claws with adamantium again and boost his healing factor.[285] After Sabretooth retrieved Wolverine, Colcord intended to put some new memory implants inside his mind but Logan was freed before the procedure was complete by the Shiver Man under the orders of Nick Fury. Despite being defeated by Sabretooth afterwards he managed to escape although it's unknown if the memory implants procedure was successful or not.[112]

Shortly after receiving a mysterious letter, Logan went to Madripoor to investigate [289]. While here he had to take part into cage fight with several superhumans until he fought Mister X in final who revealed to be the one who sent this letter because he wanted to fight Logan again.[290] Logan finally understood that Mister X incredible fighting skills came from his telepathic powers which allowed him to read his opponents mind and anticipated their next moves. Logan decided to let the berserker take over again, since no one, not even Logan can predict his next move while in this state. Logan defeated Mister X again but he managed to escape and as Logan was about to leave Madripoor, Viper told him that someone else is here, someone much more dangerous than Mr.X: Ogun. [290] Ogun revealed that he took possession of Viper that he followed Logan since his first meeting with Mr. X where he was hidden inside Blok's body hence Logan's vision of a demon because he wanted to possess Logan's body. But because of his bestial nature and everything Logan suffered in his life, the pain was too big for Ogun to handle. In the end, Ogun took possession of Viper again thinking Logan would never strike him down though her but Logan stabbed Viper and managed to defeat Ogun, freed Madripoor from his influence and Ogun died as a result. Logan then struck a deal with Viper by allowing her to get some medical treatment and in exchange she put an end to their marriage.[291]

Back in Canada, the immortal Mauvais decided to eat the heart of the Wendigo and took his powers.[292] Almost unstoppable now, he was finally defeated by the combined effort of Wolverine and Alpha Flight and was then sent to the prison of the Great Beasts where he was tortured. But before leaving, Mauvais warned Logan that no matter what happened to him, Logan's fate is going to be much worse in the following days.[293]

The Logan Files

Mauvais predictions turned out to be true, as Sabretooth went on quest to destroy Wolverine's life once for all. To that end, he stole the "Logan Files" from the Weapon X program, hired Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike to hurt Logan's friends and captured Amiko and finally using the codes he stole from the Weapon X program he used their latest weapon to completely depowered Logan.[294] Without any powers, Logan went to see Yukio and learned that Sabretooth kidnapped Amiko and that Yukio was tortured by Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike. Seeing no other choice, Logan went alone to Las Vegas and confronted the trio and despite a the wearing the Guardian costume he was defeated and almost killed.[295]

Sabretooth then betrayed Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike and took Amiko and Logan to Canada. He then told Logan that if he managed to get to Amiko before he caught and killed him, he would let her and Logan go but he would also give thim something else: The Logan Files. Those files are supposed to contain everything related to Logan’s past before he joined the Weapon X experiment. Seeing no other choice, Logan ran away in order to quickly find Amiko and those files before Creed killed both of him and Amiko. As a result, Sabretooth tracked Logan all though the Canadian wilderness and almost killed him several times while Logan tried to find Amiko. Logan discovered that Sabretooth hided Amiko in the old Weapon X compound where he was subjected to the adamantium bonding process but while here Logan found Amiko dead, killed by Sabretooth. In the ensuing battle Logan was brutally beat by Sabretooth. Creed then revealed to Logan that the "Logan Files" he stole were empty, the Weapon X project never knew about his past. The only person to blame for Logan's memory loss was Logan all along, since his healing factor was healing the trauma and made him forget his most painful memories.

After this revelation Sabretooth fatally wounded Logan but at the same time Colcord who managed to track down Creed and Logan, also used his last weapon to deactivate Creed's powers. Feeling weak from the effect, Sabretooth let his guard down and Logan managed to gain the upper hand but before he could deal the last blow, Creed teleported himself away. After the injuries Logan sustained during his fight with Sabretooth, he fell to the ground and finally died in the place where he was made into a weapon.[203]

In the afterlife, Logan met a strange redhead woman who is mistakenly took for Jean and who revealed things to him about his long life and most notably how he coped with pain. While here and almost ready to let go of the pain and made peace with himself in order to learn the truth about his origins Logan was attacked by several deceased villains who wanted revenge. Logan decided that he didn't want to let go of the pain just yet and decided to fight all of them one last time, as he was overwhelmed someone stepped him and helped him: his deceased friend Colossus. Happy to see his friend back, they both managed to defeat all those villains but Logan's choice had a big consequence, his will to fight kicked back his healing factor and his soul was returning to his body but before leaving the redhead woman told him one last thing, she wasn't Jean. As Logan regained his body and wondered who this redhead Woman was, in the afterlife, all alone the redhead woman said one last thing before letting a rose flower fell to the ground: "Farewell, James my love, perhaps we'll be reunited again someday." Back to land of the living, Logan made his way to the X-Mansion and discovered that Amiko was alive, she was saved by the Weapon X project and Colcord to make up for what Creed did.[205]

But this near death experience would have big consequences on Logan, leading him to have nightmares and an obsession about discovering the true identity of this woman.[135] [296]

Weapon Plus and the Death of Jean Grey

Around that time, Jean Grey and the Professor Xavier met a strange character named Fantomex who revealed several truths about the Weapon X project and most notably that Weapon X meant "Weapon 10" all along and that the Weapon X program was just a part of the Weapon Plus program which created several weapons through the years. It was also revealed that the latest weapons were created in World which was a self-contained research facility built by Weapon Plus somewhere in rural England.[297] After defeating Weapon XII, Jean Grey learned that Fantomex was also a Weapon Plus victim and that his real codename was Weapon XIII and that he was also created in "The World". Shortly after while rescuing the mutant Dust, Logan met Fantomex who called him by his real name for the first time in years: “James”.[298]

After Jean Grey discovered that Cyclops had a psychic affair with Emma Frost, Scott left the Institute but Logan and Fantomex managed to track him down and convinced him to help them infiltrate the World in order to learn the truth about the Weapon Plus Program and about Logan’s origins.[299] Wolverine, Cyclops and Fantomex infiltrated "The World", there Wolverine learned how he had been used in the Roanoke slaughter during the Weapon X experiment, and other Weapon Plus secrets.[300] It was later revealed that it was Sublime's plan all along to let Logan looked at those files in order to unlock this memory about Roanoke and to bring him back to this place later on.[301] After being confronted by the last product of the Weapon plus program Weapon XV, Logan detonated a bomb blowing up the Weapon Plus station and Weapon XV in the same process.[300]

Shortly after, Jean decided to rescue Wolverine and went to the Weapon Plus station where she discovered that he managed to kill Weapon XV but Logan told her that it was a trap. Jean realized they were both standing on Magneto's old asteroid M[302] and it was hurtling toward the sun which was Xorn's plan all along.[296] As the heat slowly began to intensify, Jean could no longer stand the pain and asked Logan to take her life with his claws. Obliging his love's last wish, Jean's death unlocked the power of the Phoenix.[296] Thus empowered, Jean returned Wolverine and herself back to earth as Logan slowly healed. However, as the duo confronted Xorn alongside their fellow X-Men, he injected Jean with a lethal electromagnetic pulse and she died in Cyclops arms.[303] Wolverine greatly mourned Jean's loss and was not pleased with Cyclops' and Emma Frost's new relationship[304], but he has remained a valued member of the X-Men, serving on as many missions as he can while also indulging in the occasional solo mission. It's during this period that Logan met Hisako Ichiki a.k.a Armor and decided to train her.[305][306] Thanks to her training with Logan, Armor became a valuable member of the X-Men and would even replaced Kitty in the team roster after she was lost in space.[306]

The Brothers, Cassie Lathrop and the Native

While living on his own, Logan met a young woman named Lucy and they became friends most notably because they both love reading. Unfortunately, one night, a commando entered the building where Logan was living and killed Lucy. [307] After learning that this commando was part of a cult named “The Brothers” and that Lucy escaped from them, Logan decided to take them down. After meeting the ATF agent Cassie Lathrop and locating “The Brothers” stronghold, Logan discovered that Lucy wasn't the first woman who was abused and killed by this cult, and after he saw all the murders this cult commited he entered in a berserker's rage and killed everyone on sight. [308] This experiment was hard to handle for Logan and he asked his friend Nightcrawler to help him but Logan still pondered if after all of that and despite everything he did in the past, he was no more than a bloodthirsty animal. [309]

Shortly after Logan discovered a human trafficking business at the Mexico border, he decided to investigate and put an end to it.[310] Along the way he met Cassie Lathrop again and the two of them began a relationship [311] but Logan was still riddled with nightmares [64] and one night he decided to leave while Cassie was still sleeping. [312] Around the same time Sabretooth was hired to capture a new creature|called the Native but he failed. Seeing in opportunity, Creed used Logan to tracker the Native by telling him that this thing was also part of the Weapon X project.

Logan went on quest to discover the truth and learned that the native was the woman with the same powers as him, after a brief fight and letting his feral side took over both him and the native felt a strange attraction to each other and made out. [313] Regaining his senses, Logan discovered that the native's mind was fractured but he also discovered several clues leading him to believe that the Native and him had a long history together in the past, most notably that they were both living in a cabin before the Weapon X project abducted them. [314] Unfortunately, after Creed failed to capture the Native his employers double crossed him and tracked both Logan and Natvive down and captured the Native and experimented on her. Logan decided to team up with Creed to save her but he betrayed him and then went on his own to save the Native. [315] [316]

Logan discovered that the Native was pregnant and that her "eggs" were retrieved and would be used as a potent weapon. Logan freed her and killed the scientist while Sabretooth killed his employers and decided to track Logan. [317] [318] After defeating Wolverine, Sabretooth then tracked the native and told her he couldn't let her live, because the scientists would find her again and used her as a guinea pig to make both him and Logan obsolete. The two of them fought and Creed finally killed her, after retrieving her dead body Logan asked Kurt to give her the last rites. [318]

Meeting X-23

Around that time Logan received a strange letter from Sarah Kinney, telling him that a young female clone of him named Laura and codenamed X-23 was created and used to commit several assassinations all around the world. Shortly after X-23 tracked Logan to the X-Mansion, Logan smelled her scent and led her to a quiet place where they wouldn’t be disturbed. While here Logan tried to reason with Laura, but Laura attacked him and almost killed him but before she could deal a fatal blow, Logan used this opportunity to calm her down and broke through Laura’s conditioning in order to help her. After talking to her and telling her that he would help her, Logan and Laura were attacked by the SHIELD and Captain America, who were here to arrest Laura for her crimes and despite Logan’s intervention Laura was finally captured. Captain America with the help of Daredevil discovered that Laura wasn’t in control of her actions so he decided to let her go. He told her to go find Logan and the X-Men but unfortunately Laura didn’t listen to Steve’s advices and now on her own she disappeared for a while.[319]

Sometime after, Wolverine and the X-Men were investigating several murders cases committed in New York and after looking at the dead bodies Logan and Ororo discovered several slashes similar to Logan’s adamantium claws. Their investigations led them to a super-being themed nightclub, Wannabees, in here Logan caught Laura’s scent and when he tried to talk to her she stabbed him in the chest and cut his face with her foot claw.[320] [321] Not giving up on her, the X-Men tracked her and Logan finally confronted her alone, Laura attacked Logan again but this time Logan easily subdued her.[321]

After clearing the misunderstanding, she helped the X-Men and Logan brought her to the Xavier Institute, although Logan made a deal with Laura and decided to hide the fact that he knew her to the X-Men in order to protect her. [322] While here Laura acted really protective towards Logan following him everywhere and even attacking Bishop while he was sparring with him during a training session. [323] Not long after Laura left the X-Men but Logan who called her his “sister”, convinced her to come back to the mansion and to work with both the New Mutants Squad and the Hellions Squad despite Emma Frost protests. [322] [324]

Enemy of the State

Some time after a young boy named Rikuto was kidnapped and in order to deal with the kidnapper the parents of the boy Ichiro (who was Mariko's cousin) and Fukuko asked for Wolverine's help. It turned out the kidnapping was a setup and Wolverine was ambushed by the Hand and killed by the Gorgon who told him that they already killed Rikuto.[325] Logan was then resurrected by one of the Hand's mystics, Phaedra [59] who retained a fragment of Wolverine's soul, which became the warrior Shogun.[326] Hydra then used their technology to transform him into a killing machine that they unleashed abroad a SHIELD helicarrier [327]. Now in control of Logan's body and with the help of several teleporting devices Logan was able to face against several other heroes such as Elektra [327] the Fantastic Four [328], the Hornet [328] and Daredevil.[329] each time succeeding in completing his mission.

Although the fight with Daredevil proved to be decisive, as Daredevil managed to impale Wolverine on a sword creating intense pain which allowed Logan to break through Hydra mindcontrol just in time to warn him that Hydra was planning to kill the President of the United States and that their fight was just a diversion allowing the Hand and Hydra to kill and resurrect Elektra as one of their own.[329] Wolverine then infiltrated the X-Mansion and used Rachel Grey and Cerebra in order to lobotomize the US President or he would killed everyone Wetchester thanks to a bomb he had with him which was designed by Reed Richards and stolen by Hydra. But instead Rachel used Cerebra to read Reed Richards's mind, dismantled Wolverine's bomb and warned the X-Men. Logan's teleporting device was damaged by Rachel and as he was escaping both the X-Men and the Avengers he killed Northstar but Wolverine was finally stopped by the combined efforts of the X-Men and the Avengers and by Captain America.[330]

Back in the hands of the SHIELD, Nick Fury tasked a team a scientists to remove Logan's brainwashing and turned him back to his older self in order to use him against Hydra and the Hand. Unfortunately both Hydra and the Hand with Elelktra's help killed several superhumans and resurrected them as part of their army and attack the SHIELD hellicarier where Wolverine was detained.[331] Seeing no other choice, despite Wolverine's reahabiliation far from over, the scientist decided to unleash him against Hydra forces, as a result Logan killed several members of Hydra army and was able to save Nick Fury from the resurrected Northstar. After regaining his senses and told Ichiro and Fukuko that their son was dead, Logan told her that he will avenge their son no matter what.[332] Wolverine started by tracking Northstar in a bar and after trying to reason with him, he was beat down by Northstar and his team and was then taken to an old warehouse to be killed but everything was according to Logan's plan and thank to the help of a sentinel he stole from the SHIELD he took all of them down and then went on his way to Japan to face the Hand.[333]

Logan then faced an army of ninjas and Elektra who revealed she was undercover all this time and together they took down the Hand and went on their way to take down Hydra and the Gorgon.[334] Unfortunately for them the Gorgon proved to be powerful and defeated them, after reading Elektra's mind and discovering the location of a wounded Nick Fury, the Gordon telported himself to Fury location in order to kill him.[335] As the Gorgon easily dispatached all the SHIELD agents protecting Nick Fury and was about to kill him, Wolverine wearing a jetback managed to save Fury and engaged the Gorgon on a one one one fight. Logan angry after what the Gorgon did to him and Rikuto, Logan decided to kill him once and for all but despite severly injuring the Gorgon Logan was about to get killed by the Gorgon's vision. Logan then used his last trick and used his claw as a mirror to reflect Gorgon's sight turning his own powers against him, turning him to stone that Logan proceeded to shatter.

After defeating the Gorgon Logan disappeared for months, leaving a trail of body all around the world which started to worry Nick Fury and the X-Men. The truth was that Logan was searching for Rikuto's body and after finally finding where the boy was buried he told his parents the location of his body, saying he was sorry for everything.[334]

Wolverine with the New Avengers

While on a mission in the Savage Land, he met the recently reformed Avengers and eventually accepted membership, as Tony Stark felt that Logan could provide a useful perspective to the team in this modern world.[336]

House of M and M-Day

As a result of the House of M, during which Scarlet Witch altered Earth's reality and then restored it, Wolverine regained all of his memories due to the Witch attempting to give all the heroes their perfect worlds, finally being able to sort between what was true and implanted. He was last seen traveling to Japan in an attempt to come to terms with his past. He went to visit the Silver Samurai, who serves as a guard to the prime minister of Japan.[337] Wolverine battled with Silver Samurai, cutting his hand in the process.[338] Later, he visited the site of the original Weapon X program,[339] which led to a clash with Bucky, who apparently killed Wolverine's wife, the Japanese Itsu, and Daken.[340] Bucky apologized to Wolverine, telling him that he was not in control of his actions at the time. Wolverine then began to reminisce about his wife, Itsu, and the events that led up to him meeting her.[87] US government officials, probably under Romulus' command, sent a Shiva robot[341] and Nuke[90] to kill Wolverine. However, he survived.[342] Emma Frost later learned that Daken, Wolverine's son, was still alive and had been manipulated into hating Wolverine. Wolverine swore to locate him.[55]

After the events of House of M, all the powers of the depowered mutants were absorbed by Michael Pointer a.k.a the Collective and was heading to Earth leaving mass destruction and almost killing the members of Alpha Flight [343] but fortunately Logan and the Avengers managed to stop the Collective.[344]

Meeting Daken and the Return of Cyber

Despite having Dum Dum Duggan and the SHIELD on his trail, Logan was still tracking his long lost son in Berlin but he was confronted by Omega Red who wanted the Carbonadium Synthesizer. In order to to lure Logan out of hiding, he decided to attack a center for depowered mutants where he severly injured Maverick and took Jubilee as an hostage along the way.[345]

With the help of the Black Widow, Logan managed to trick Omega Red by promising him the Carbonadium Synthesizer in exchange for Jubilee's life and as result he was captured by SHIELD. Unfortunately during the ensuing battle, Jubilee was severly injured and only SHIELD medical units could helped her.[346] Logan accepted to be taken into SHIELD custody and Jubilee was saved, but shortly Daken managed to infiltrate the SHIELD facility where Logan was detained and father and son finally met for the first time. The family reunion was cut short after Daken eviscerated Logan deeming him weak and left him for dead.[347]

Thanks to his healing factor Logan survived, he managed to escape and decided to resume his track of Daken that lead him to Bruxelles.[348] While here Logan finally confronted Daken and he wanted to help him but Daken decided otherwise and slashed Wolverine's throat.[349] Soon after while Logan was lying on the floor bleeding, Daken was attacked by a resurrected Cyber who tried to kill both him and Logan. Logan managed to recovered from his injuries and helpep his son against Cyber but in the midst of the battle Daken decided to abandon Wolverine and left him to fight Cyber one on one.[350]

Cyber had the upper hand during his fight with Wolverine but fortunately for Logan, it turned out that Cyber suffered from a heart condition and as a result he was defeated.[350] In order to get some answers about Romulus, Logan decided to save Cyber's life by taking him to the Tinkerer who saved him by implanting a carbondium peacemaker on him.[351] The radiations produced by the carbonadium would slowly killed Cyber without the Carbonadium Synthesizer but Logan stole it and get rid of it shortly after by throwing in the water, finally having his revenge on Cyber.[351]

Wolverine Origins Vol 1 14 Textless

Vs. Daken

Civil War

After the destruction of Stamford by the super-villain Nitro, which started the Civil War, Wolverine went after Nitro himself. Although the X-Men were neutral in this conflict, Wolverine, also a member of the New Avengers, led a S.H.I.E.L.D. team to apprehend Nitro.[352] This went badly, with Wolverine as the only survivor, and a conflict with several Atlantean guards, and the king of Atlantis himself, Namor.[30] Nitro was eventually brought to Atlantis, where he lost a hand to Wolverine's adamantium claws.[30] Logan then discovered that Damage Control was behind the destruction of Stamford and more precisely Walter Declun. After espcaping from SHIELD and fighting several Damage Control guards equipped with Mandroid armors Logan confronted Declun and stabbed his eyes out.[353] [354] Wolverine then worked with Atlanteans and fell in love with Amir, an Atlantean woman[355], but she was killed by Scimitar terrorists, who attacked Wolverine.[356] Lazaer then defeated him in the astral plane, leaving him brain-dead. He recovered with help from Doctor Strange, and then confronted Scimitar members Shogun and Phaedra, who resurrected Shingen Harada to fight him.[357] Wolverine defeated Shingen and apparently slew Shogun and Phaedra. Lazaer also returned the stolen soul fragment, but warned Wolverine he could never again escape death by defeating him in astral combat.[326]

After the end of the Civil War and the death of Captain America, Logan decided to pay his respects and then asked Bucky for his help to track Daken.[358]

The Death of Sabretooth

After Sabretooth joined Rogue's X-Men team and decided to live at the X-Mansion, Logan confronted him in order to put an end to their feud once and for all but also to get answers about Romulus.[359] Their fight took them all over the world from Westchester to Wakanda and finally to Canada. During their fight, Logan had many visions about the mysterious Romulus who supposedly had manipulated the events of his whole life with the help of Sabretooth, he also learned that him and Creed were part of the Lupine race (this revelation would be revealed to be a lie later on). As part of those visions, Logan also heard the phrase: "Quod Sum Eris" several times.[360]

After having finally caught up with Sabretooth and met the new and improved Wild Child along the way, he was then attacked by a bloodthirsty Creed who had regressed to being no more than a feral animal.[361] After Creed killed Feral,[362] Logan decided to get his Muramasa blade back from Cyclops and confronted Sabretooth near the cabin he used to live with Silver Fox. Armed with the Muramasa Blade, Logan was able to easily defeat Sabretooth by cutting off one of his arm and beheaded him. Shortly after he was confronted by Wild Child again and he met for the first time since he recovered his memories Romulus. Both Romulus and Wild Child managed to escape and an angry Logan sweared he would find Romulus and kill him.[363]

Secret Invasion and Dark Reign

Not long after the end of the Civil War, Logan stayed with the New Avengers team and during a mission in Japan they discovered that the Marvel Universe had been infiltrated by the Skrulls.[364] After failing to defeat the Skrull Queen and the world witnessing Norman Osborn saving the day, Wolverine and the Avengers were labeled as criminals and outlaws.[365] Norman used his new position to track down and seized everything he wanted and more precisely The World which put him in conflict with both Wolverine and Noh-Varr who put an end to his plans.[366]

Logan then resumed his quest of vengeance against Romulus and used Deadpool to find his son, who had many similarities to his father such as aspects of his personality, abilities, and powers. Wolverine arranged for Daken to be shot with carbonadium bullets, which would slow his healing factor so Wolverine could capture him and remove Romulus' influence.[367] However,Sebastian Shaw abducted Daken, intending to brainwash him into servitude. After learning that Professor Xavier was alive, Wolverine teamed up with him and fought against Shaw's Hellfire Club. Blocked by a psychic booby trap in Daken's mind, Shaw manipulated Professor X into triggering the trap and absorbing most of the damage, which restored Daken's memories. Both Wolverine and Daken defeated Shaw and resolved to seek vengeance in Romulus together.[368] Shortly after, while looking for clues about Romulus both Logan and Daken met Cyber in North Africa who also wanted revenge on Romulus. Unfortunately after learning what Cyber knew about Romulus, Daken betrayed Logan and left Cyber for dead because he decided he didn't want to kill Romulus for revenge anymore but because he wanted to take his place.[369] Now on his own, Daken was then recruited by Norman Osborn for his Dark Avengers.[370].

After learning the news that Daken joined the Dark Avengers, Logan met with Nick Fury and they understood that Daken was after the Muramasa blade in order to have the metal bonded to his bones and becoming unstopable. But before Logan could have warned the X-Men of Daken's plan, Cyclops decided to take matter into his own hands without warning Logan and almost got himself and his squad of X-Men killed by Daken.[371] [372] Logan managed to save them and stopped his son from getting the Muramasa blade, but unfortunately a piece of the blade was retrieved by Daken[373] and with the help of both Romulus and the Tinkerer, two of his claws were bonded with the metal of the Muramasa blade. Logan tried to help Daken one last time but he was stabbed in the chest by his son who then ran away. Thinking that Daken was a lost cause, Logan decided it was time to take down Romulus.[374]

After all these revelations about his past, his son's betrayals and seeing him joined Norman's Obsorn Dark Avengers and stealing his codename, Logan started to show signs of a nervous breakdown as pointed by Yukio and Spider-Man.[375]

Facing Romulus

Wolverine tracked Romulus's right hand-man Victor Hudson in order to locate him unfortunately both Romulus and Victor tricked Logan and lead him to a Russian's prison where an angry Omega Red was waiting for him. Logan managed to defeat him but was soon captured by WildChild.[376] WildChild then revealed to Logan that everything he did since he retrieved his memories was part of Romulus plan, that he made sure that Logan fought against Sabretooth, Cyber, Omega Red, WildChild and Daken to see who would be the strongest and the fittest to replace him as the head of his empire, which was what the phrase:"Quod Sum Eris" means.[377]

Suddently Omega Red appeared and killed Wildchild, Logan managed to escape but Omega Red managed to find him again. After this reveal, Wolverine decided he didn't want to fight Omega Red because he didnd't want to play Romulus game anymore but Omega Red threatened to go after Daken. With no other choice, Logan used the broken Muramasa Blade and killed Omega Red but suddently Romulus finally appeared and confronted Logan. [377] Logan managed to defeat him but Romulus reminded him that no matter what happened, if Logan killed him he would be a the "top of the food chain" and he would have to kill his son next because there can be only one person at the top. Logan shocked by this reveal decided to let Romulus live but he vowed to destroy Romulus empire. As he turned his back, Romulus used this opportunity to knock him out and leave him alone with his broken Muramasa blade.[378]

In order to take down Romulus, Logan needed outside help from someone with a plan so outside the box that nobody, not even Romulus could ever figured out and that someone was Deadpool. Deadpool's plan was to used the Anwser in order to staged the evasion of Ruby Thursday but at the same time Logan needed to seek help from Skaar, Bruce Banner and the Silver Samurai. Before putting Deadpool's plan in motion, Logan was trained in sword fighting by the Silver Samurai, he rescued Dagger who was kidnapped by Romulus and Victor Hudson and he killed Victor Hudson.[379]

Once done, Deadpool's plan was put into motion and after witnessing Ruby's evasion, a confused Romulus tried to blackmail her in order to learn what she knows. Naturally Ruby betrayed Wolverine and his team and revealed everything she knew, which was part of Deadpool's plan. Once done and Romulus fooled, she was then quickly sent back to the Raft by Cloak. Thanks to this misdirection Logan was able to lure Daken out of the shadows and staged his son's death which confused Romulus even more.[380] Once Romulus was out of the shadows, Logan was then betrayed by Daken again who allied himself with Romulus against Logan and Skaar. After the battle, both Romulus and Daken managed to escape, and as Daken revealed that he wanted to take Romulus place and was about to strike him with his Muramasa claws, Romulus disappeared.[381][382]

In fact Romulus was transported by Cloak near the Howlett estate, in here Wolverine slashed Romulus with the Muramasa's sword but didn't kill him, instead he made sure that Romulus would be trapped in the Darkforce dimension forever.[383] At the same time, Daken now all alone and without any means to kill Romulus and take his place was confronted by Logan armed with the Muramasa Blade. Thanks to the lessons of the Silver Samurai[384], Logan was able to easily defeat Daken and removed his Muramasa claws. He then hided both Daken's claws and the broken Muramasa blade in an unmarked grave near the Howlett Estate putting an end to Romulus empire and legacy once and for all.[383]

Shortly after ending Romulus reign, Logan met Nick Fury and finally made peace with his past, he decided it was time for him to move on and to focus on the present and the future.[385]

Tracking Mystique and becoming the Black Dragon

After the events of Messiah Complex, Cyclops asked Wolverine to find and kill Mystique for betraying the X-Men. Logan managed to find Mystique less than 9 hours later in Iraq and after several encounters with her where she mocked Wolverine and the X-Men, he managed to defeat her. As the result of their fight Mystique was severly injured, Logan decided to not kill her but to abandon her in the Syrian Desert alone with just a gun, telling her that despite what she thought of him or the X-Men at least he had a family but not her, after betraying everyone she would always be alone and no one would come to help her.[386] Mystique managed to survive and joined Norman Osborn's Dark X-Men afterwards and resumed her war against the X-Men.[387] [388]

After the destruction of the Xavier's Institute during the events of Messiah Complex, the X-Men relocated to San Francisco. Unfortunately for Wolverine, coming back to San Francisco opened some old wounds and most notably his past in Chinatown with the Black Dragon Tong. After his last visit, Lin became the new Black Dragon and swore vengeance for what Logan did 50 years ago when he refused to become the new Black Dragon and forced Lin to take his place. After she learned that Logan was in town, she sent her Black Dragon Death Squad after him and he was almost killed as a result.[389] Fortunately Logan was saved by Master Po and a young boy named Yuen Yee, with their help he learned the way of Kung-Fu and was able to easily defeat the Black Dragon Tong Death Squad. Logan then ended Lin's reign and this time he accepted to become the new Black Dragon, the protector of Chinatown. Unfortunately Lin managed to escape.[390]

Leading X-Force

Wolverine (team leader), Warpath and X-23 as members of X-Force

Shortly after a new X-Force consisting of Wolverine as team leader, Warpath, Wolfsbane and X-23 was born to take care of the dirty business the rest of the X-Men wouldn't do normally, including murder. Although Cyclops decided to add X-23 to the team without consulting Logan first which angered him since he was trying to have Laura to be more than a killing machine but despite Logan's protest Laura was added to the team.[391]

Their first mission involved infiltrating a North Dakota S.H.I.E.L.D. facility to root out a group of Purifiers led by Matthew Rismanwho had infiltrated the base and stolen valuable technology required to resurrect the Sentinel known as Bastion. In the planned raid Wolfsbane and X-23 disobeyed Wolverine's orders and entered ahead of the team and got Wolfsbane captured. After Logan talked some sense into Laura, Logan and the team managed to rescue Wolfsbane but she has been drugged and subjected to subliminal programming by the Purifers and attacked on sight both Laura and Warren, ripping Warren's wings off. After Risman managed to resurrect Bastion, Bastion found the Magus at the bottom of the sea and in combination with the Transmode Virus he was able to resurrect and control several dead foes of the X-Men and together they formed the Human Council. After this attack, Warren reverted to his old Archangel persona and the team managed to stop Risman and the Purifiers but Logan discovered all the villains Bastion resurrected and he knew that X-Force mission was just starting.[392]

Shortly after still dealing with the aftermath of their fist mission, the team added two new members to their lineup: Elixir and Domino, the team then tracked the Vanisher who stole a sample of the Legacy Virus. The team managed to destroy the sample and the Vanisher was forcibly added to the team after Elixir gave him a brain tumor.[393] Around that time, Warpath discovered the true identity of one of the Purifiers: Elie Bard, a two thousands years old follower of Selene who resurrected several deceased mutants as an offering to Selene.[394]

During the events of Messiah War, the team was sent to the future by Cyclops in order to locate and help Cable and Hope against Bishop and Stryfe. Once in the future, the team managed to defeat Stryfe but Bishop ran away. Back in our time, X-23 managed to save Boom Boom and killed the Leper Queen, but she was captured and took to the Facility and tortured by Adam Harkins and Kimura.[395] Thanks to the help of Agent Morales, Wolverine and the team managed to locate and rescue her.[396]

During the events of Necrosha, thanks to Elie Bard and the Transmode Virus Selene became more and more powerful and resurrected many dead mutants and used them as her own army against the X-Men. X-Force managed to infiltrate her fortress in Genosha and defeated her returning the souls of the deceased mutant to rest. After this event Logan told Cyclops that Laura was out of the team from now on, Cyclops agreed but first he had one more mission for X-Force.

During the events of Second Coming, Cable and Hope finally came back to our time and X-Force had to help them against the Purifiers and the Human Council, unfortunately after X-23 killed a prisoner in front of the X-Men the news about X-Force broke out and a rift was created between Wolverine and several members of the X-Men most notably with his best friend Nightcrawler. Before Logan could explain himself to Nightcrawler, Kurt was killed by Bastion while trying to protect Hope and shortly after Bastion unleashed an army of Sentinels from the future, X-Force and Cable went to this future to stop the source: Nimrod. Once Nimrod was stopped, Cable sacrified his life to make sure the team could come back to the present. After all the members of the Human Council were killed, Bastion tried to kill Hope but he was finally defeated.

In the aftermath of this battle, the death of Kurt had a profound effect on Logan and the news of this X-Force team broke his friendship with Ororo. True to his words, Logan removed Laura from the team and told her it was time for her to find her own mission in life and to be more than just a weapon. Despite Cyclops's orders to disband the team, Wolverine secretly assembled a new X-Force team with Psylocke, Deadpool, Archangel and Fantomex.[397] Shorlty after the death of Nightcrawler Logan paid his respect to Kurt, fulfilled his last will and learned a last lesson from him.[398]

The Adamantium Men

Logan's former Team X teammate, Maverick, contacted Logan to inform him that a private military contractor called Blackguard had got their hands on the old Weapon X files, including the recipe for synthesizing adamantium, and created a group of twelve mercenaries called Strikeforce X, an elite unit of men armed with healing factors, unbreakable skeletons and laser claws.[399] Not only that, but they were being used to carry out atrocities in the name of Blackguard's corporate interests.[400][401] With the help of reporter Melita Garner, Logan was able to expose Blackguard to the world and kill most of Strikeforce X, but the Chief Executive somehow managed to survive. What Logan didn't know was that Maverick was the man who stole the Weapon X files in the first place and sold them on the black market. In an effort to cover up his involvement in kick-starting the Strikeforce X program from Wolverine, Maverick killed the man whom he sold the files to. [402][403]

The Asylum

Later, Wolverine found himself in Dunwitch Sanatorium in a foggy haze with a hospital full of misfits and few memories of a past that seemed to point to the fact that he was insane. A fellow patient warned him that the director, Dr. Rottwell, has a penchant for harvesting brains; which seemed to be proven out when, the very next day, Logan discovered that the patient has been lobotomized.[11] Logan lost his identity in an insane asylum and Dr. Rottwell tried to get him to release the aggressive killer inside of him while still sublimating the rest of his past. A pair of mob goons came looking for someone to pull off a contract killing and Dr. Rottwell offers them Charlie Chainsaw from whom he has removed his hands and attached actual chainsaws; as Logan reached the end of his tolerance for abuse and torture, he finally popped his claws and took out an orderly while Rottwell looked on and smiled.[404] Unable to warp Logan's mind into becoming a feral killer using conventional brainwashing, Dr. Rottwell decided to take the direct approach by cutting directly into his skull. When Rotwell kept wrecking blades on adamantium, he plugged Wolverine into his innovative God Brain machine to get some readings. Logan was able to make a mental cry for help to reporter Melita Garner (the very same journalist who helped him expose Blackguard) before the machine takes full effect.[405] Melita received the desperate psychic message from Wolverine and called in the X-Men to help; Nightcrawler and Psylocke invaded Dunwitch Sanatorium and dismantled Rottwell's God Brain machine. The mob later showed up looking for their missing goons; with chaos abounding as the mob, the patients and the staff all try their best to kill each other, Logan took the opportunity to try and carve up Dr. Rottwell but finds his tormentor impossible to kill; Rottwell then escaped as Wolverine made his way to Melita to recuperate but shortly after, Rottwell used what he discovered inside Logan's mind to manipulate him into killing a man and stealing his brain.[406]

Relationship with Melita

As his relationship with Melita blossomed into something more, Logan received relationship advice from the women in his life; He tried to warn Melita away from him because of his lifestyle and his past history with women who end up dead but she simply replied that she could handle it. Mystique found out about the affair.[49]

Wolverine

Deathlok

Wolverine took Steve Rogers to a bar to celebrate his resurrection. However, they were attacked by Deathloks.[407] In the present, Miranda Bayer told Wolverine that the Deathlok cyborgs from the future had killed all of their targets except for one: Captain America. Wolverine and Cap battled the Deathloks. In a dystopian future an aged and damaged Wolverine helped Miranda and her troops try to destroy the Deathloks' time portal.[408] Both this aged Wolverine and the future Miranda were killed by the Deathlock in the future while in the present Logan, Steve Roger and Bucky helped the future Deathlok overcame his programing after he met his younger self: Evan Wakowski. Now free of his programing, the future Deathlok decided to explore the present while the Marvel heroes wondered if they really managed to change the future. [409] Afterwards, Miranda was tasked by the commander of the future to leave the boy in an orphanage where he will be brutalized which would lead him to become a criminal and then one of the subject of the Deathlock project. It's later revealed that this boy, the future Deathlock and the commander of the rebellion in the future were the same person at different points of time meaning this apocalyptic future wasn't averted.[410]

Spider-Man and Wolverine: Time Travelers

During what seemed to be a routine robbery, Spider-Man and Wolverine were thrown back in time by magical diamonds, to the time of the dinosaurs. While Spider-Man secluded himself, Logan befriended a tribe of early humanoids. His involvement with them allowed them to survive the K-T Extinction Event. When the meteor came, Spidey and Logan found themselves flung into the future, where the extinction of humanity allowed the tribe to dominate the world.[411] [412] The world was menaced by Doom the Living Planet. Despite Spider-Man's protests, Wolverine used the Phoenix Gun to destroy Doom. The Phoenix Gun was a weaponized piece of the Phoenix Force, capable of destroying anything at the price of the life of the one who fired it. As such, Wolverine died. However, Spider-Man resurrected him with a Cosmic Cube, much to Logan's dismay. They were then assaulted by the pair of Czar and Big Murder, who sent them through time once again with the diamonds.[413]

Logan wound up in a wrestling ring, facing down Peter Parker. He realized that this was before the death of Peter's Uncle Ben. Meanwhile, Spider-Man found himself in a frozen wilderness as a feral Logan was hunted by Dog. They were then transported to Mojoworld; Mojo had been using Czar and Big Murder to arrange the entire list of shenanigans.[414] Wolverine became overcome with uncontrollable anger. However, he did not enter a berserker rage, but instead became something far worse. The fragment of the Phoenix Force from the Phoenix Gun had stayed within him, and it manifested. Logan became the new Dark Phoenix.[17] Fortunately Spider-Man managed to calm him down, and the Phoenix Force seemed to leave him, the duo was then sent back to the American Midwest in the time of the cowboys. Peter fell in love with a woman named Sara Bailey, whom had also been transported through time by the diamonds, while Logan became chief of a Native American tribe. Any diamonds they found appeared to be inert. The Time Variance Authority found them and set the duo back into their proper point in the timeline.[16]

Wolverine Goes to Hell

Logan visited Wraith, who survived Creed’s attack[112] and was now a pastor. After a few weeks, a child was found dead with three claw marks. Wraith found Logan’s body, which had been possessed by a demon while his soul was sent to Hell by the Red Right Hand with the help of Mystique [415] [416] In Hell, Logan apparently met Satan and was forced to battle Hand soldiers. Meanwhile, Wolverine’s body was going around killing the people he cared about. At the same time, a strange group calling themselves the Mongrels also destroyed everything deared to Logan in Madripoor [417] and tried to kill Melita who was saved by Mystique.[418] Melita, and surprisingly Mystique, teamed up with the Ghost Rider and Daimon Hellstrom to get Logan’s soul back. In Hell, Logan was tortured and then forced to battle Sabretooth.[419] On Utopia, “Hellverine” has managed to get past the defenses, only to be knocked down by Colossus.[417]

In Hell, Logan fought Satan and on Utopia, the X-Men battled Hellverine. Before Colossus could be killed, Melita, Mystique, the Ghost Rider and Hellstrom captured Logan and began the ritual to bring his soul back. In Hell, Logan met Thomas Logan, who claimed to be his real father. After defeating the Devil, creating a riot in Hell and thanks to the Hellstrom's ritual, Logan managed to escape from Hell.[416] But the demons were still present inside his mind, and it took the help of his own memories, Melita, the X-Men and what appeared to be a vivid memory of Jean as the Phoenix to burn the demons from his mind once and for all.[420] Logan then planned to get revenge on Mystique and the Red Right Hand for sending him to Hell.

Wolverine's Revenge

Wolverine began to track down the Red Right Hand, the group that sent him to Hell. The first target was Mystique, who he managed to kill, despite interference from Lord Deathstrike. Before Logan killed her, Maverick managed to find the location of the Red Right Hand's base.[421] He invaded the Red Right Hand's base, killing the Mongrels. The members of the Red Right Hand killed themselves, leaving Logan with a message: the Mongrels were his children. Logan was devastated with the fact he killed his own children.[35]

Unbeknownst to Logan, Daken worked with the Red Right Hand for years[422] and he helped them with their plans to send Wolverine's soul to Hell but more importantly he was the one who found and gathered all of Logan's children. He then gave them to the Red Right Hand to make sure that Logan would kill them in order to hurt him in the worst way possible.[35]

Logan took the bodies of his children and buried them next to their mothers, the last one was William Downing whose mother was Dolores Downing. After burying William, Logan went to a bar and got himself drunk. When Logan left the bar he was attacked by Daken who told him he helped the Red Right Hand in what they did which made Logan enraged but was surprised by the appearance of Dog and Thomas Logan who started to laugh at him. It was seemingly an illusion or a vision as he was awakened by someone who wanted to steal from him. Later he called Melita Garner and told her to tell everyone not to look for him and let him go, after that he started to climb a mountain and throwing himself off it many times over.[423] After a while, he started to move with a pack of wolves and whenever the pack was hunting, Logan couldn't kill the prey as he remembered how he killed his children. The pack was attacked and the youngs were taken, the old were killed, and Logan was shot in the head, however, his healing factor saved him. Logan tracked the attacker, killed them and freed his pack. Logan found who took his pack and that they were using the wolves to fight children for sport. Logan freed the children and returned them to their parents. Logan was confused afterwards knowing that if he hadn't killed his own children, he wouldn't have saved those children. In the middle of this, Melita found him and with the help of his friends convinced him to return.[423]

Uncanny X-Force

After the Second Coming event, Cyclops ordered Wolverine to dissolve his X-Force team. But Logan believed that his team was still necessary, so he formed a new X-Force with Archangel, Psylocke, Fantomex, and Deadpool.[397] During their first mission, they found Clan Akkaba who was indoctrinating a young Apocalypse, to resume his duties.[424] Clan Akkaba was protecting Apocalypse with a new group of Horsemen, but X-Force defeated them. While the rest of the group was still discussing the moral implications of killing a child, Fantomex immediately shot the kid Apocalypse in the head.[425] After this event, Angel lost control of his Archangel personality, and went on a killing spree.[426] Trying to kill Apocalypse's influence on him, X-Force traveled to the Age of Apocalypse universe, thanks to Dark Beast, to find the Life Seed, the only thing that could save their friend's life.[427] There, Logan found the Jean Grey of that universe, his alternate daughter, and an evil version of himself.[428]

When X-Force returned to their universe, they were attacked by Archangel and the Dark Beast, who took the Life Seed, because they needed to restart evolution.[429] After a heavy battle between the forces of Archangel and X-Force, Psylocke was able to stab Archangel with a different Life Seed, killing his alter ego, and saving Earth from the Age of Archangel.[430]

The Heroic Age and Fear Itself

After the events of Siege, Logan stayed with the Avengers [431] and worked with them during the Serpent's attacks on Midgard, first fighting the secret organization S.T.R.I.K.E. that planned to destroy New York with an Atomic Bomb, and later, using one of the armors Tony Stark made with the mystical metal Uru, and fought the Worthy.[432]

Later, Norman Osborn appeared again alongside his new Dark Avengers team (which included the resurrected Gorgon who was masquerading as Wolverine) to get his revenge on the Avengers but Wolverine and the Avengers managed to stop them.[433]

Schism

James Howlett (Earth-616) Scott Summers (Earth-616) X-Men Schism Vol 1 3

The opinions of Wolverine and Cyclops diverge

When the return of Kid Omega set off a new wave of anti-Mutant sentiment[434], Wolverine and Cyclops steadily grew divided. Wolverine wished to hand Quire over to Commander Steven Rogers, while Cyclops wished to deal with him within the mutant community.[434] When a new Hellfire Club attacked and incapacitated the X-Men at the opening of a Mutant History Museum Oya, whom Wolverine had taken a liking to, was the last one standing. As Logan tried to convince Idie to stay hidden, Cyclops pressured her to act leading to Idie killing a dozen men. Logan was enraged and blamed Cyclops.[435] Eventually it got worse when Wolverine saw that the idea of Cyclops raising and training the teenage mutants as soldiers were only going to get them killed and after demolishing a Sentinel that was sent to destroy Utopia, Wolverine and a number of X-Men quit the team and left with a number of the teenage mutants to return to their former home in New York with it clear that Cyclops has clearly crossed the line with his actions.[436]

Regenesis

In order to start the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, Logan needed to retrieve all the fortune that he had amassed over the years, unfortunately his money was stolen[437]. With the help of Gorilla-Man, Master Po, Yuen Yee and Fat Cobra, Logan managed to retrieve his money and was able to open his school.[438] He also let Fat Cobra took his place as the new Black Dragon.[439]

On its first day it was assaulted by the new Hellfire Club, whom had been a major force in causing the Schism of the X-Men.[440] Wolverine made it clear that he didn't want to lose any of the kids and fought as hard as he could against several Frankenstein monsters, whom Iceman defeated by making Ice clones of himself. Then, they were attacked by the Hellfire Club, that was in possession of a spawn of the original Krakoa.[441] Kid Omega who wanted to prove himself to Broo, Idie and Kid Gladiator who told him they never heard of him, reasoned with Krakoa who then joined Wolverine's X-Men.

File:Jean Grey School for Higher Learning from Wolverine and the X-Men Vol 1 3 page --.png

Wolverine, along the School's staff and students, confronted the Hellfire Club and he made clear to them to stay away from his school. As the Hellfire Club members were leaving, Krakoa almost attacked them but Logan stopped him as he had a better idea on how to deal with them. The next day Matt Murdock told Kade Kilgore that he was being sued by Wolverine for the sum of 879 million dollars for the damage he had done to the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning and if he didn't pay they would take control of his company. As the school was being rebuilt, Logan was informed that Krakoa was glad they allowed him to stay and Logan found it good to have a school ground that could fight back.[442] After the events of the Dark Angel Saga, both Warren and the young Evan were admitted to the school as new students.[443][444] Logan on his own continued to juggle between his life as a Headmaster and as a member of X-Force in order to protect his school.[444]

The Return of Sabretooth

After hearing the news that Sabretooth was alive and that he kidnapped Dagger in order to force Cloak to open the Darkforce dimension and freed Romulus. Wolverine decided to investigate and discovered that the Sabretooth he beheaded wasn’t the real deal but just a clone created by Romulus, but as soon as Logan learned the truth, he was attacked by the real Victor Creed and several clones of him.[445] After surviving his encounter with Sabretooth and his clones, Logan met a mysterious redhead woman named Remus who claimed to be Romulus sister, Logan learned that Romulus lied to him, there never was any Lupine’s race, as Remus confirmed it was just a bunch of lies. After sevral encounters with Romulus Wolverine managed to rescue Dagger and tracked Romulus to his fortress in Italy where he discovered that his foe got his bones laced with adamantium and that 4 adamantium claws were implanted in each of his forearm.[446] During their fight, Romulus claimed that the Weapon X program was always Logan’s idea, but Logan not believing another one of Romulus lies, managed to defeat him and he was imprisoned at the Raft while Sabretooth escaped.[447]

Later, after discovering that Seraph was alive and working with both Cassie Lathrop and Lynx as part of a team called the Seraph’s Angels, Wolverine learned that Sabretooth resurfaced in Japan working alongside a revived Mystique with the Japanese branch of The Hand and its leader Azuma Gōda.[448] After hearing the news, Logan quickly traveled to Japan and was ambushed by the Hand and later by Sabretooth.[449] While here he discovered that Yukio's spine was severed after she was attacked by Hellverine and that Amiko was now dating the illegitimate son of Kenuichio Harada:Shingen Harada II. After being drugged by the Mind ninjas and forced to relive the death of the mongrels but Logan managed to break free by letting his berserker side out and as result he killed all the Mind ninjas. Unfortunately he was tricked by Mystique into having an affair with her, Raven used this strategy to break Logan and Melita up.[450] However, despite the appearances Creed betrayed Azuma Gōda and left him to be killed by Wolverine. He then went to a meeting of all East Asia's greatest crime syndicates and killed all the representatives, declaring himself invisible king of all Asia, and ruling with Mystique, Lord Deathstrike, and Shingen Harada a.k.a the new Silver Samurai. Before leaving Japan, Logan teamed up with Amiko and they both stopped a bank robbery.[451]

Shortly after, Sabretooth organized a birthday party in Madripoor and invited most of Wolverine foes, thanks to Maverick’s help Logan discovered the location of this party and beat everyone up and wished to Victor a "Happy Birthday". [439] Some time later Wolverine returned to Japan and was confronted by the new Silver Samurai sent by Sabretooth, Logan was able to defeat him and cut one of his hand off. [452]

The End of X-Force

After the events of the Dark Angel saga, the resurrected Angel and the young Evan were sent to the Jean Grey School and the Nightcrawler of the Age Of Apocalypse universe decided to stay with the X-Force team in order to track the Iceman of his reality who fled to our reality and make him pay for his betrayal. [443]

Shortly after, Fantomex was captured by the Captain Britain Corps and sent to the Otherworld to be trialed for the crime he committed in the past under Weapon Plus order. Psycloke was also teleported to the Otherworld by Brian Braddock and Jamie Braddock because they needed her help to access the Tower of the Omniverse and stopped the war that was ravaging Otherworld.[453] After hearing the new from Ultimaton, the X-Force team managed to go to the Otherworld thanks to Gateway and put an end to this war.[454] It was later discovered that the true antagonist was an older version of Jamie Braddock and in order to stop him, Psylocke took possession of Brian's body and used it to snap the younger Jamie's neck erasing his older version in the process and putting an end to the war.[455] A rift was created as a result between Betsy and Brian and afterwards Betsy and Fantomex starts a relationship and decide to take a break from X-Force.[456]

Back in our reality, the X-Force team tracked the Iceman from the Age of Apocalypse universe and Nightcrawler managed to kill him and have his revenge [456], at the same time Daken, the Shadow King, Sabretooth, the Skinless Man, Mystique and the Blob from the Age of Apocalypse universe decided to form the new brotherhood of Mutants.[457] Daken and Sabretooth abducted the young Evan while the rest the Brotherhood hired White Sky criminal organization in order to create three clones of Omega Red, implanted them with fake memories and used them against X-Force. [458]

Shortly after Fantomex was captured by Mystique and then tortured and killed by the Skinless Man in front of Evan's eyes and to make sure the X-Force team couldn't stop their plans, the Brotherhood hacked Ultimaton and used him to kill Gateway and detonated to kill the X-Force team.[459] Thanks to Psylocke, X-Force managed to survive and went to the future where they met their older counterpart and discovered the truth about the Brotherhood’s plan.[460] Back to the present, the team prepared themselves to attack the Brotherhood stronghold to free Evan while Daken and Sabretooth were still torturing Evan both mentally and physically in order to have him unleashed the power of Apocalypse.[461]

During the assault, Nightcrawler killed Blob and then after being duped by Mystique he betrayed the team which resulted in Wolverine being tortured and almost killed by Daken.[462] [463] The X-Force team managed to stop the rest of the brotherhood and for his betrayal Nightcrawler was fatally wounded by EVA. Wolverine managed to escape and after his older self revealed to him that if he didn’t kill Daken, his son would kill all of his students [464], Logan decided to kill his son by drowning him in a puddle of water.[465] After killing his son, Sabretooth appeared and revealed that all of what happened was his plan all along that he wanted to hurt Logan in the worst way possible, an angry Evan almost killed Sabretooth as a result but Logan told him to let him go, revenge would only lead him to a path of destruction just like what happened.[465] Shortly after E.V.A managed to create three clones of Fantomex thanks to White Sky technology, but after those events the team finally disbands.[464]

Avengers vs

Wolverine vs. Captain America

Avengers vs. X-Men

When Nova arrived on Earth with a warning, the Avengers discovered that the Phoenix Force was heading on a destructive path towards Earth. Captain America turned to Wolverine for advice. Wolverine informed him of Hope Summers connection with the Phoenix, and the stand that Cyclops and his X-Men team would take on this matter, using the cosmic energy that comes with the destructive power of the Phoenix to save mutantkind from extinction. Captain America asked if the Jean Grey School would side with him, but Logan insisted that he had founded the school to keep the kids out of fights.[466]

When Captain America called on the Avengers to invade Utopia, Wolverine was there alongside them. While the X-Men and the Avengers fought for the control of the mutant nation Utopia, Wolverine found Hope, and was going to fulfill his promise of killing her. But Hope, using the powers of the Phoenix, was able to escape, burning Logan's skin and muscle.

He recovered and went with Captain America to the Savage Land looking for Hope, but Captain America, thinking that Logan was a liability, asked him to stay in the Quinjet while they searched, punching him in the face, prompting a vicious fight between them that was resolved thanks to Giant-Man who pushed Wolverine out of the plane, making him fall in the middle of the North Pole.[467] Wolverine was tracked down by Hope who offered him a truce if he could help her go to the Moon in order to confront the Phoenix but in case she lost control she wanted Wolverine to be there to kill her. Wolverine agreed but betrayed her by calling the Avengers who showed up on the Moon to capture her. The X-Men arrived shortly after but the fighting was cut short by the arrival of the Phoenix.

As the Phoenix descended on the Moon and was about to possess Hope, she released a huge amount of energy, knocking everyone out. Hope said she wasn't ready, it was too much power for her and that she couldn't control it and she begged Logan to kill her. Seeing no other way Iron Man used a special suit to try to destroy the Phoenix. He only managed to splinter it, and it took the five other X-Men present as hosts; Namor, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik and Colossus.[468] The Phoenix-possessed X-Men started changing the world into a better place for living, but knowing that Phoenix's ultimately destructive nature would bring chaos, Steve and the Avengers tried to get Hope from Utopia in order to use her knowledge about the Phoenix against it. After the Scarlet Witch helped them against the X-Men (previously having visions of the Phoenix destroying Earth), Cyclops decided to hunt down every Avenger. The Thunderer offered the Avengers to hide in K'un-Lun, as well as to train Hope to face the Phoenix, because of his past experience with the Phoenix Host and Iron Fist Fongji, and the prophecy of the Phoenix bringing chaos to Earth. Before the entire Avengers could teleport to K'un-Lun, Namor attacked where they were hiding, Wakanda, along a full army of Atlanteans. After defeating Namor with the price of the partial destruction of Wakanda, the Avengers teleported to K'un-Lun, in order to help Hope to train to face the Phoenix.

The Avengers were attacked by Cyclops who now possessed half of the Phoenix. He made quick work of anyone that opposed him but was defeated by Hope who in an act of desperation combined the powers of the Iron Fist, Scarlet Witch's chaos magic and Shao-Lao's flames to teleport Cyclops to the Moon. The Avengers then teamed up with several X-Men who had realized that Cyclops and Emma had completely lost control. Together they attacked Cyclops and Emma and gained the upper hand until Cyclops was forced to take the final piece of the Phoenix from Emma, making him the sole host. The complete Phoenix proved too much and finally turned him into Dark Phoenix.[469]

The Avengers fought Cyclops all around the world with the help of the X-Men and Nova, as well as trying to contain the chaos the gigantic force produced around Earth, but who finally managed to defeat him were Scarlet Witch and Hope, the Phoenix left Scott and possessed Hope. Thanks to the K'un-Lun training, Hope managed to control the Phoenix Force and repaired all the damage Scott caused on the planet. Finally, using the powers of the Scarlet Witch to manipulate reality, Hope and the Scarlet Witch destroyed together the Phoenix Force with a final blast of energy which caused millions of people around Earth to manifest mutant powers. Cyclops was finally incarcerated, and Steve accepted the Avengers should have done more to help mutants, and not allowed the world to hate them. As a result, he started planning a new team of Avengers in hopes of unifying mutant and humankind.[470]

After the war with the X-Men and End Times, the team was disbanded [471], both Captain America and Iron Man asked Wolverine to join the main Avengers team and the Avengers Unity Division, which he accepted.[472][473]

Uncanny Avengers

Now part of the Avengers Unity division, Wolverine tracked Sunfire in Japan to recruit him for the team. When a clone of the original Red Skull awoken and stole Professor Xavier's brain and used it as his own to create a world of hate[474], Wolverine and the Avengers intervened. Logan managed to cut the Red Skull's hand but was severely injured by a mindcontrolled Thor, fortunately his healing factor saved him but the Red Skull managed to escape.[475] Shortly after the Apocalypse Twins made their appearance and started to create tensions in the Unity team by revealing that Logan’s X-Force team killed a child Apocalypse, angering Captain America and creating a rift between them.[476]

Shortly after while looking for clues about the Apocalypse twins, Wolverine was confronted by a resurrected Daken who defeated him thanks to his new powers and crucified him.[477] Logan was rescued by Rogue and Sunfire and told them to go after the Scarlet Witch thinking she was working with the twins.[478] Logan managed to heal and fought against Daken again and learned the truth about Wanda’s intentions but despite trying to warn Rogue to not kill the Scarlet Witch or it would doomed the earth, it was too late, Rogue killed Wanda and she was then killed by the Grim Reaper. Angry about what happened Logan quickly dispatched Daken but in the end he was captured by the Apocalypse Twins and sent to Planet X while the earth was destroyed by Exitar.[479]

In here he was tortured for 8 years by Daken[480] until Thor managed to free him, once free Logan made quick work of Daken but didn’t kill him since he didn’t want to relieve the nightmares he had after the first time he killed him.[481] Kang decided that the best course of action was to send the Avenger’s consciousness back in time, Logan agreed with the plan but warned him to send them back before Rogue’s death or he would sabotaged the whole thing.[481] Once done the Apocalypse twins were defeated and despite Kang’s betrayal the earth was ultimately saved.[482]

Professor Logan

On top of being a member of the Avengers Unity Division, Logan was still the headmaster of the Jean Gey School and continued the education off his students. Shortly after the conflict between the X-Men and the Avengers, Kade Kilgore started his own school to rival the Jean Grey School: The Hellfire Academy.[31] After dealing with the Frankenstein Monster menace and the Murder Circus[483], Ororo Munroe joined the Jean Grey school as a teacher and began a relationship with Logan.[484] To train the students to survive, Logan decided to send them on a trip to the Savage Land, in here he met his long lost half-brother: Dog Logan.[485] Now armed with time diamonds and motivated by his future self, Dog tried to prove that he was a better Logan, a better teacher and a better mentor than Wolverine.[486] In the end he failed and was afterwards recruited by the Hellfire Academy after killing his future self.[487] Soon after the Hellfire Academy and the Jean Grey School clashed and Logan and his school proved their superiority and defeated Kade and his Hellfire Academy. Unfortunately both Kade Kilgore and Dog managed to escape.[488]

Around that time a dying Beast, afraid of what Cyclops was doing with his revolution decided to go back in time and snatched the original X-Men in order to confront Scott with his younger self.[489] After the younger Beast helped the current Beast survived his latest mutation, Wolverine learned the news and he wanted them to go back to their time immediately, but the original X-Men refused except for the younger Angel who decided as a result to leave the Jean Grey School for the Cyclops’s School.[490] Logan decided to accept the rest of them as students in his school and let them trained under Kitty’s leadership for a while.[491] Unfortunately Mystique with the help of Sabretooth and Lady Mastermind reformed the Brotherhood to commit several heists and Lady Mastermind used her illusions to incriminate the original X-Men.[492] Logan decided to go to Madripoor with the original X-Men and with the help of the Avengers Unity Division they were able to put an end to Mystique and Sabretooth plans.[493] After the events of the Battle of the Atom crossover both the original X-Men and Kitty left the Jean Grey School and joined Cyclops’s school.

The Return of Dr. Rot and of the Dreaming Maiden

After several reports of murders where the victims had their brains removed, Logan became one of the main suspect, it also didn't help that since Logan's last encounter with Dr. Rot he suffered from several episodes of blackout where he didn't remember what he did. To get answers, Logan decided to return to the Dunwitch Sanatorium, in here he discovered many monstruosities created by Dr. Rot, most notably some shapeshifting monsters who took the appearances of people he knew and a diary containing informations about the Dr Rot.[494] Following the clues, Logan managed to find Dr. Rot but thanks to one of the old Weapon X trigger phrase that Rot discovered the last time he experimented on Logan, he managed to have Logan under his control again by saying: "DREAM A DREAM OF PRETTY PREY AND BLOOD RED AS RAGE", he then resumed his experiments on Logan's brain.[495]

Melita who reconized Dr. Rot modus operandi in those murders, helped the Police and lead them to Dr. Rot[496], in here she was confronted by a mindcontroled Logan, who almost killed her. Fortunately Logan managed to break Rot's hold on him by reversing the trigger phrase and breaking it. When he finally found Dr. Rot, he learned that the Weapon X program implanted many more trigger phrases inside his head but also that those shapeshifting monsters he fought were actually some of his mapped memories extracted from his brain and made flesh. After this revelation Logan killed Dr. Rot and burned his place [497] Unfortunately because of Dr. Rot's experiments on his brain, Logan lost several memories and most notably he didn't remember who Melita was. Elsewhere the Dr Rott managed to come back to life thanks to Nurse Fester and decided to find everything he could about the Weapon X program.[497]

Shortly after Melita decided to help Logan remembered some of his lost memories but their session was interrupted by Vanessa Baker who told him that the Dreaming Maiden that Logan hided in 1934-1935, started dreaming again attracting the attention of the Covevant and Elsa Bloodstone.[498] After fighting several members of the Covevant such as Murderous Lion and Jefferson Chambers and teaming up with Seraph's angels Logan finally found the Dreaming Maiden again.[499]

Unfortunately, in the ensuing battle between Wolverine, Seraph's Angels and another member of the Covenant named Menace the statue of the Dreaming Maiden was decapitated.[72] After placing the statue of the Dreaming Maiden in the garden of the Jean Grey School, Logan resumed his sessions with Melita in order to remember who she was.[72]

Killable

During a rescue mission to help S.H.I.E.L.D., Wolverine was infected with a Microverse virus that shut down his healing factor.[500] Losing his healing factor proved to be a shock to Logan but Nick Fury Jr. warned him that the sentient virus from the Microverse that removed his healing factor was still present and was spreading all over the world. The virus was conducting several strikes all over the world against villains who were able to control viruses, and the last viral controller left was The Host. Because she couldn't be killed, she was detained in Wakanda and Nick Fury Jr feared that the reason she was arrested was because T’Challa was infected and has been taken over by the Microverse virus.[501]

Logan went to Wakanda to check the situation here and to distract T'Challa while Ororo Munroe, Nick Fury Jr. and Victoria Von Frankenstein retrieved the Host. [502] While here a fight broke between Wolverine and Black Panther, both wanted to test each other to see if they were infected, and to trick the virus into thinking they had a good reason to fight. Once the misunderstanding was resolved and the crisis averted, the S.H.I.E.L.D. took The Host into custody and began using her to destroy the Microverse virus.[502]

While Logan was in Wakanda, Sabretooth sent Mystique to the Jean Grey School to steal one of Logan's honor sword and to leave him a map with some coordinates, those coordinates would lead Logan to the place he was born: The Howlett Estate.[502] After checking that the students were safe, Logan and Kitty headed to the Howlett Estate to face Sabretooth and his army. Before they could reach their destination, they were attacked by Batroc the Leaper who was interested in the 10 million bounty Sabretooth put on Logan's head, and despite not having any healing factor Logan was able to defeat him.[503] On the way to the Estate, they were attacked again but this time by Fiber, who didn't want to kill Logan but just hurt him. [503] After Logan and Kitty arrived at the Estate, they discovered that it had been transformed into a mall. Despite this change the place reminded Logan of his childhood’s memories, but shortly after they arrived Logan and Kitty were attacked by the Hand, Lord Deathstrike, the Silver Samurai and Mystique.[504] Logan was severely injured by all these attacks and because of Fiber’s previous attack each wounds inflicted to him made his body flinched, his senses were also affected by the Hand’s magic and as a result Logan was acting more and more erratic. Seeing no other way out and welcoming his end with open arms, Logan asked to see Sabretooth one last time.[505]

Sabretooth finally appeared holding Logan's honor sword, Logan tried to fight him but Creed beat him to a pulp but he didn't kill him because letting him live powerless and weak was in Sabretooth's mind a fate much worse than death for Logan.[20] At the same time, thanks to the Host, the microverse virus was forced to leave every hosts it possessed in the world and was almost destroyed. While the defeated Wolverine was lying on the floor broken physically and mentally, the microverse virus took possession of a security guard nearby and begged Logan to save it, that it could reactivated his healing factor but Logan refused and the virus died as result. Logan then broke his honor sword and told the X-Men that the Wolverine was dead.[20]

After this defeat, Logan started to prepare himself to face Sabretooth again and get his healing factor back. He donned a suit of armor to protect himself,[506] he left the Jean Grey School (though he remained the leader of the X-Men) and the main Avengers team (though he remained with the Unity Division), and started working for a businessman's squad of mercenaries.[507]

In reality, however, Wolverine was sent to work for the Offer by S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to trace Sabretooth's whereabouts by killing one of their agents, Agent Monkton.[507][508] With MI-13, he eventually tracked Sabretooth down in Madripoor and tried to retrieve an object that Sabretooth was going to use to alter reality as his Patch persona, but the mission failed and as a result, Pinch's daughter was kidnapped.[509][510] Logan decided to rediscover his martial arts by training with Iron Fist and Shang-Chi and the three of them went to Itsukushima, where they battled ninja and had an encounter with the entity Death. Logan would later encounter Rose's soul and was forgiven by the latter for killing her years ago.[511] With the help of Thor, the X-Men, Damage Control, and S.H.I.E.L.D., Logan was able to defeat Sabretooth and recovered Pinch's daughter.[512]

Despite the loss of his healing factor Logan was still helping the Avengers on several occasions most notably during their battle against the Superior Venom[513] and during their investigation of the Superior Spider-Man[514]. Although Captain America decided to remove him from the main Avengers team, fearing for Logan’s own health and safety.[515] Shortly after he also quitted the Avengers Unity division after dealing with Kang and the Apocalypse Twins.[516]

After dealing with some time travelling X-Men and the Future Brotherhood[517], he tried to make peace with Cyclops after battling some sentinels[518] and he finally succeeded in reforming Quentin Quire.[519] Around that time while looking for a runaway student he met and teamed up for the first time with the new Miss Marvel[520], he also teamed up with Deadpool and Captain America in order to stop Butler's plans[521], he helped the X-Men stopped Azrael's plans and witnessed the return of Nightcrawler[522], and fought against an army of Wendigo.[523] Unfortunately, after some time travels adventures[524], Quentin Quire left his school for a while and a rift was created between the two of them.[525]

Death

Logan had a reunion with Mister Fantastic, who explained to him that his entire physical structure is based on the fact that he could heal himself and that now only using his claws can be fatal. He assured him he can reactivate his healing factor but will need time and asked him not to fight until he can figure it out. Traveling to an island in British Columbia, Canada, he was attacked again and again by A.I.M. agents, ninjas and other mercs and assassins who came for a bounty in his head. They took most of each other out competing for the bounty and he killed the rest. He returned to the mainland and left a note with a bartender for whomever else came looking for him before heading back to the island. Next came Nuke and several of his mercenaries. One of them was sent to the port, which was set to explode. Wolverine sunk the boat from below and killed the other mercenaries as they tried to escape to the coast, leaving only Nuke alive. Nuke threw Logan against some rocks but he head-butted Nuke with his adamantium skull until he was defeated, he told Nuke to tell everyone that he is the last one he lets live and demanding to know who put out the contract. Nuke revealed that the contract was to bring him alive and that it was put by the new queen of Madripoor, Viper.[526]

He traveled there and disguised himself as an arms dealer and offered to sell one of Viper’s men an Iron Man helmet, demanding to see Viper herself for the deal, which he agreed. She saw through his disguise and sent her guards against him, but he defeated them with little effort. He demanded answers and she revealed that a client came to her for various works and that she subcontracted the word out for him. She told him that she would tell him who the client is if Logan could beat her “pet”: Sabretooth, who was chained and captured. He explained that she got him out of prison and injected him with his venom, getting the antidote if he obeys. She claimed that she wanted one to die and that whoever wins gets what he wants. Sabretooth attacked him and slashed his eye, he set the helmet to explode and throw it to him but it didn't stop him. However, Lady Deathstrike attacked and impaled Sabretooth, allowing the Viper to escape, but Logan stopped Deathstrike from killing Sabretooth, claiming that when it happens, it won’t happen that way, she reluctantly let him go. She explained that she didn't come to capture him but that the bounty extended to her and others like them and she barely escaped from Japan from another who took the contract: Lord Ogun, and tracked him there to work together and get to the bottom of it. However, she noticed that his eye didn't regrow and realized the loss of his healing factor and claimed that he can’t help her but decided to exchange his life for her own. However, Kitty arrived and phased her arm through Deathstrike’s chest.[527]

Kitty threatened Yuriko with un-phasing, but Deathstrike tried to attack her and Kitty un-phased her hand in Deathstrike’s chest and tried to kill her as she escaped. Wolverine passed out due to his wounds, but Kitty injected him with a Regen Serum, which healed him. They travelled to Japan to find Ogun. In Tokyo, he considered that it may never stop until he dies and contemplated ending it now but ultimately decided to live out the remainder of his life, however short it turned out to be. Kitty kissed him until he stopped her, she then taunted him on what happened to Jean, Mariko and Rose. He then realized she was possessed by Ogun. He revealed Kitty came looking for him in Japan and he found and possessed her. He offered to release her if Logan surrenders but Logan refused and they fought. Ogun threw him into a house, where Logan took samurai armor and swords and battled Ogun, who started losing control of Kitty's body as she was fighting him and Logan taunted him that he can’t win against two of his students at the same time, forcing him out of her body. Kitty insisted he go after Ogun’s new body and told him she heard the name of who put the contract while Ogun was in her head: Abraham Cornelius. He tracked Ogun to a factory and found the corpse of Cyber, which was recuperated by Ogun, melting in acid. Ogun revealed Cornelius was paying great money for Cyber's skin, some swords and other articles. Wolverine assumed he was looking for his adamantium skeleton and Ogun told him where Cornelius was, Paradise Valley in Nevada. Claiming he didn't know more, he threaten Logan with stepping to the acid and killing his vessel but promised him to find another vessel, leave his current vessel unharmed and leave him alone if he simply go. He also offered him more Regen Serum but he claimed he was done living forever and told him to tell Cornelius he was coming.[528]

James Howlett (Earth-616) from Death of Wolverine Vol 1 4 001

What's left of Logan, after he suffocates from the hardening Adamantium

Logan traveled to Cornelius' facility in Paradise Valley. Using improvised fake claws, he killed the guards and broke into his lab, where he witnessed Cornelius experimenting on innocent people. He demanded to know what he is doing and Cornelius claimed that he was "getting it right", claiming that he deserved to be known for something other than helping make a killer unkillable. Cornelius claimed that he was responsible for what Logan was and that his test subjects belong where he is, revealing that all they needed was the adamantium. He told him that he had enough adamantium and that what he needed was his healing factor for the subjects to survive, the Regen Serum being his attempt to recreate it. Cornelius told him that he could save his test subjects by giving him his healing factor, but Logan made a cut in his hand and let it bleed, showing Cornelius the loss of his healing factor. Cornelius then ordered a volunteer of his program, Sharp, who was made into a fighting machine, to kill him. During the fight, Cornelius activated his machines on the test subjects and taunted Logan, claiming that he was an animal and that Sharp was perfect. However, Logan tricked Sharp into breaking the glass protecting Cornelius, who was hurt by a shard of glass; he knocked out Sharp and crushed his armor. However, Cornelius activated the adamantium merging process and escaped. Wolverine unleashed his claws to slash the batch of liquid adamantium before it was injected and the metal covered his entire body in the process. He injected the subjects with the Regen Serum and left after Cornelius before the adamantium hardened. A soldier tried to help Cornelius escape but he escaped when Logan arrived. He killed Cornelius as he asked him what he ever did beside killing, and reflected on his life before he died from suffocation from the hardening adamantium, kneeling in the sunset,[529] leaving Storm in charge of the X-Men and the team heartbroken.

After the facility exploded,[530] Logan's petrified body was left in its ruins, where it was located by Shogun, Skel, Neuro, Endo, and Junk, along with the "Wolverines." They planned to use Logan's petrified body to find a way to prevent their deaths. However, Mister Sinister took the body with him to his fortress, from where the X-Men later retrieved it.[531]

The X-Men initially placed Logan's body in a cabin hidden in Alberta, with a shrine built by Forge in his honor for people to pay their respects; however, they rapidly decided to find a better way to put him to rest. Kitty Pryde phased Logan's corpse out of the Adamantium casing, and he was given a proper burial in a secret location. The casing remained in Alberta as a memorial,[532] which was later shown to an alternate version of Wolverine by Steve Rogers and Kate Bishop,[533] before it was eventually destroyed by the Reavers who wanted to steal Logan's body.[532]

Return

Months following Logan's death, his body was found by Persephone who resurrected him as one of her undead killer.[532] With the reanimated corpse of Logan under her control, Persephone used it to carry out assassinations and other type of dirty jobs all over the world,[534] including a prototype machine, which killed 343 people in Maybelle, Arizona,[535] as part of Persephone's efforts to extend the reach of her abilities.[536]

Around that time the Reavers tried to steal Logan's corpse and broke his adamantium casing believing his valuable body was still inside. To their surprise the casing was empty and they were apprehended by the X-Men and Alpha Flight, but one member of the Reavers named Starshine managed to escape and warn Lady Deathstrike that Logan's body wasn't in the adamantium casing, which prompted her to gather a team and to start looking for Logan's missing corpse.

After the battle with the Reavers, Kitty Pryde also discovered that Logan's body had gone missing from his unmarked grave, as a result she rallied numerous superheroes to find him, from the X-Men to his least close associates.[532] Despite finding leads that connected Wolverine's return to Soteira, their investigation was interrupted when Persephone threatened to kill latent mutants around the world if they didn't stop looking into it.[534]

Shortly after Persephone decided to dress Logan's reanimated corpse in his old yellow costume in order to impress Dr. Bernard Delacroix;[537] however, something happened with Logan's healing factor,[536] and he came back to life, breaking free from Persephone's control and killing several Soteira soldiers in the process.[537]

Now in control of his body, but without any memories and with his claws burning hot for unknown reasons, Logan started to track a Soteira killteam led by Zagreus. After witnessing the murder of a scientist by one of Zagreus' men, Logan decided to intervene, but was quickly stopped by a reanimated Omega Red and lost consciousness. Logan then saw Persephone on the astral plane and discovered that his missing memories where metaphorically represented by various personas locked within a prison of the mind. Persephone gave him a key to open any cell he wanted before kissing him and telling him that she was the one who brought him back to life. Logan then woke up and met Ana, who told him she needed his help to save her son. Logan agreed to help her and opened a cell in his mind freeing his heroic persona.[537]

Logan then stole a boat and started to track Zagreus and his team, along the way Zagreus sent both a reanimated Daken and the reanimated Omega Red after him. With the help of Ana, Logan managed to defeat them and tracked Zagreus to Persephone's island. At the same time, Jean Grey discovered that Logan was alive.[538]

Thank to the help of Cypher the X-Men managed to locate Logan on Persephone's island where they were quickly attacked by both Soteira's police forces and the island's citizens. Hearing some screams, Logan decided to investigate and after learning from one of the wounded island's citizen that the X-Men were evil, Logan decided to fight them.

With the help of his X-Force persona, Logan was able to defeat Nightcrawler, and while Jean Grey was distracted by her battle with Soteira forces, he used this confusion to take her down as well, though Iceman intervened and froze Logan to try to reason with him in order to calm him down. Unfortunately Logan didn't listen to Iceman, and seeing no other choices, he opened another cell in his mind and unleashed his berserker persona. As a result his claws started to heat up and Logan cut Iceman in half.[539]

Storm quickly intervened to protect Iceman from Logan and after Persephone warned Kitty that if the X-Men didn't leave she would use Logan to kill all of the persons on her island, Kitty and the X-Men had no choice but to abandon Logan in retreat. Logan was then ambushed by all the island's citizens, who tried to subdue him; however, he managed to take a lot of them down until he fell unconscious thanks to his "hot claws" sapping his energy.

Logan woke up shortly after in an hospital with Ana at his side, she revealed that he did well and that her son was okay, thought it was quickly revealed that Ana was none other than a vessel used by Persephone all along and that she, her son, and all the people on this island died a long time ago and were merely used as reanimated drones by Persephone in an effort to strengthen her abilities. After telling Logan about her powers, she revealed that the X-Men he attacked were in reality his friends, then told him to follow her brother Zagreus to their space station where he could meet her.[540]

Once on Persephone's space station, Logan discovered that Soteira had gathered a small group of gifted people and that she intended to kill everyone else on Earth in order to resurrect them as drones under her control to help build the perfect society. She also revealed to Logan that she was the one who resurrected him as one of her undead soldiers and he killed for her all around the world, but that somehow Logan's healing factor brought him back to life when he met Delacroix.

She then told him that because of his actions, the world now knew that Logan was a monster and that his friends would never trust him nor love him again, but that thanks to her plan he could leave the past behind and start a new life in her future world. Logan refused, and as a result she tried to kill him, though he managed to survive and discovered that Persephone's plan hinged upon her satellite network, which Logan managed to destroy with the help of Soteira members that were having second thoughts about the ethicality of the plan.

Seeing that the Persephone's space station was the only thing that could still threaten the world, Logan decided to destroy it as well, but on his way he was confronted by Zagreus and a killteam who beat him to a pulp. Without any other solution, Logan decided to open all the cells in his mind, except for the berserker cell, and as result he regained most of his memories and most especially his fighting experience.

Finally whole, Logan easily defeated Zagreus and despite Persephone's threats to forever haunt him as a ghost, he crashed her space station into the Pacific. Logan survived and was rescued by some deep sea fisherman.[536]

Logan then decided to investigate the disappearance of the X-Men and discovered that Cyclops was alive. Along the way he met a younger Cable who asked him to protect Scott and to find someone who know about the future. Logan decided to go see Layla Miller and Jamie Madrox and then went to the Morlock tunnels in order to find Blindfold. After dispatching O*N*E soldiers and meeting Callisto, Logan found Velocidad who told him the location of Blindfold.

After meeting Blindfold who told him to follow Cable's advice, Logan decided to track Scott in order to protect him, along the way he met Black Widow and the Winter Soldier who discovered that Logan was alive. Cyclops then made a call asking to every surviving X-Man to meet him where it all began in Westchester; however, only the Reavers, the Purifiers, and the Sapien League answered his call, and were about to kill him, when Logan intervened and together they made quick work of their foes. Once the battle was over, Logan told Cyclops it was time to get to work.[541]

Personality

Quote1 There's a part of me as wild an' fierce as my namesake. I'm a hard man... given to hard ways... when I fight, it's to win. That isn't pretty, an' it sure isn't nice. But bein' a man... that means choosin' to grow an' change an' put aside the old ways. Quote2
Wolverine[src]

Wolverine is a gruff loner who had a strong sense of personal honor. He also had a wild, animal-like nature to him and a savage, or "berserker," rage which he tried to control. He is also perfectly at home in the wilderness. He is known as one of the most fearless, brave, and dangerous men in the world, stated by Steve Rogers. Wolverine had established himself quickly as the X-Man most willing to permanently deal with their adversaries. He developed close friendships with his teammates Nightcrawler, whose personality diametrically opposed Wolverine's, and Colossus, who often performed the "fastball special" with him. He was something of a father figure to Natasha Romanoff, Shadowcat, Rogue, X-23, and Jubilee. He loved many women, including Rose, Itsu, Viper, Silver Fox, Phoenix, and Mariko. There are only a few people that Wolverine truly trusted, which are Captain America (Steve Rogers), Nick Fury, Jean Grey, and Spider-Man (Peter Parker).

Relationships

Logan's love interests include, but are not limited to Atsuko, Mariko Yashida, Silverfox, Itsu, Rose, Jean Grey-Summers (Phoenix), Ororo Munroe (Storm), Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), Elektra Natchios, Rogue, Native, Seraph, Yukio, Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl), Alison Blaire (Dazzler), Gahck, Jessán Hoan (Tyger Tiger), Melita Garner, Jean Grey (Earth-295), Neena Thurman (Domino) and even X-Men foe Raven Darkholme (Mystique). However, Itsu Akihiro and Viper were the only women he ever actually married.

Religion and Faith

Wolverine doesn't believe in traditional religions,[542] ("never have, never will") although he claimed to have prayed while he was in the army, revealing that he is Deistic in faith.[543]

He sometimes prayed at a Shinto temple in Kyoto, Japan.[544]

It was revealed in his team-up with Marvel Boy that due to the effects of Weapon XVI that causes faith reserves to act as The World's immune system, Logan had faith in God. After everything was resolved, he hitched a ride from a truck. He asked the trucker to let him out near a church, implying his religious awakening.[366]

Powers

Enhanced Mutant Physiology: Wolverine is a mutant who had been given an unbreakable skeleton by the Weapon X Program and augmented by Apocalypse. Nick Fury's intel classified him as Power Level 9,[545] while the O*N*E classified him as a Severe Threat.[546]

Wolverine's healing factor

  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Wolverine's primary mutant power is his accelerated healing process that enabled him to regenerate damaged or destroyed tissue with far greater efficiency than an ordinary human.[547] He can regenerate greatly damaged or destroyed tissue within a few seconds. Wolverine's accelerated healing powers have been commonly referred to as his mutant healing factor. The full extent and speed of Wolverine's healing factor isn't known. He has been shown to fully heal from numerous gunshot wounds,[548] severe burns covering most of his body,[549] and regenerate missing eyes within a matter of seconds.[303] Among the more extreme depictions of his accelerated healing factor involves him having his skin, muscles, and internal organs incinerated from his skeleton only to fully regenerate the tissue within minutes. He can simply regenerate missing limbs or organs in a matter of hours. Adamantium played a crucial role in the speed of Wolverine's healing as well because of the fact that it produced a poison that his immune system fought off regularly. It is said that without the adamantium, his healing rate would increase.[550] This power even amends psychological wounds inflicted as a result of traumatic experiences; however, Wolverine's healing powers forces his mind to suppress the memories, sometimes resulting in amnesia. Wolverine sometimes calls this his mental scar tissue. Wolverine's healing factor has cured him from the mystical curse of the Werewolf after he had been bitten and turned into a werewolf,[551] and from vampirism;[552] though it should be noted that the time it took to cure the Werewolf curse was longer than the time it took to cure him from vampirism, when he was infected with vampirism he had also been infected with nanites to temporarily deactivate his healing factor and use him as a 'booby-trap' on the vampires. Wolverine's healing also provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process. He retains the health, appearance, and physical vitality of a man in the physical prime of his life, despite being well over 100 years of age.[1] After his apparent resurrection, it seems he has regained his healing factor.[553]
    • Contaminant Immunity: Wolverine's natural healing also affords him the virtual immunity to poisons, viruses, diseases, and most drugs. For example, it is extremely difficult for him to become intoxicated from alcohol. S.H.I.E.L.D. once managed to keep Wolverine anesthetized by constantly pumping eighty milliliters of anesthetic a minute into his system.[331]
    • Decelerated Aging: In addition, Wolverine's healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process; Wolverine was born sometime during the late 19th Century.[1]} Although well over 100 years of age, Wolverine retains the health, appearance and physical vitality of a man in the physical prime of his life.[37]
    • Telepathic Resistance: Due to a combination of his healing factor[554] and psi-shields implanted by Professor Charles Xavier, Wolverine's mind is highly resistant to telepathic assault and probing.[555]
File:James Howlett (Earth-616) from Wolverine First Class Vol 1 8.jpg

Wolverine over-head lifting Ursa Major (weighs 955 lbs); then, throw him.

  • Superhuman Strength: Wolverine's natural strength is augmented by the demand placed on his musculature due to the presence of over 50kg/100 pounds of Adamantium bonded to his skeleton, which also removes the natural limitations of the human skeletal structure by allowing him to lift weights that would damage a human skeleton.[556] He is capable of lifting 800 lbs to 2 tons.[556] Wolverine has been depicted with sufficient strength to break steel chains,[557][558] easily lifting the weight of a dozen men over his head with just one arm,[168] and lifting the 955-pound Ursa Major over his head before tossing him across a room.[559]
  • Peak Human Speed: Wolverine is capable of running and moving faster than any Olympic-class runner,[556] enabling him to run at speeds of 32-36 mph.[556] Wolverine has attacked faster than the eye could follow and even Spider-Man briefly thought Wolverine was faster than he was in their first fight.[15] His combat speed seems to have been more enhanced than anything else, as he has frequently kept up with Spider-Man in combat, and blitzed people before they pull their trigger fingers.[560]
  • Superhuman Durability: Wolverine's bones and muscles are harder and denser than that of an ordinary human.[548] Due to his healing factor and Adamantium skeleton, he can virtually heal from any injuries that result in massive tissue damage or loss such as multiple gunshots wounds, slashes, puncture wounds, blunt force trauma, etc.[303]
  • Superhuman Stamina: Wolverine's healing factor grants him superhuman stamina and is partially immune to fatigue toxins generated by physical exertion and thus has greater endurance than actual humans.[37] He is able to physically exert himself at peak capacity for several days before fatigue toxins in his blood begin to impair him.[556] He has shown himself capable of fighting Omega Red for at least 17 hours without any rest, despite he was exposed to Omega Red's death spores.[561] His lung capacity is at the superhuman level enabling him to hold his breath for extended periods of time underwater and on multiple occasions he was able to fight against the Hulk underwater for long periods of time.[562]
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Wolverine's reflexes are similarly enhanced, they are also superior to those possessed by the finest human specimens.[556] His reflexes are comparable to that of Captain America due to his superhumanly acute senses.[556] Wolverine was able to dodge from multiple gunmen at close-range, though he relied mostly on his healing factor.[55] On several occasions, he was able to dodge Cyclops's optic blasts with ease.[436] [55]
  • Superhuman Agility: Wolverine's agility, balance and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels far beyond the natural physical limits and capabilities of the finest human specimen.[556] Wolverine's agility is sufficient to allow him to dodge multiple bullets. Other times, he is able to jump nearly 30 ft high without a running start.[124][563]
  • Insulated Weather Adaptation: Wolverine's body is highly resistant to certain elemental extremes, particularly cold, to the extent that he could sleep nude in subarctic conditions with no apparent injury.[564]
  • Animal Empathy: Wolverine has the ability to sense the emotional state of animals on a basic level such as fear, anger, happiness or pain. He can even communicate with them to make the animal aware of his actions and or his intent.[565]
  • Superhumanly Acute Senses: Wolverine possesses superhumanly acute senses that are comparable to those of certain animals.[37] He can see at far greater distances, with perfect clarity, than an ordinary human.[295] He retains this same level of clarity even in near total darkness and complete darkness.[566] [184]His hearing is enhanced in a similar manner, allowing him to detect sounds ordinary humans cannot hear at a greater distance. For example while inside a building, he was able to hear the sound of Yukio's fighting kick against the Silver Samurai's steel armor on a rooftop nearby. [567] While asleep he was able to hear the sound of a 9 millimeter silencer though a thick wall. [106] He is able to recognize people and objects by scent, even if they are well hidden.[568] He can track a target by scent, even if the scent has been greatly eroded by time and weather factors, with an extraordinary degree of success, for example he managed to track Mystique across the world in less than 9 hours without any leads except her scent. [61] Wolverine can also use his keen sense of smell to detect lies due to chemical changes within a person's scent.[76] According to the Xaviers protocols, after Logan lost his adamantium's skeleton both his healing factor and his senses increased to incredible levels which means these senses may stems from, at least partially, his constant cellular regeneration. [569]

Wolverine slicing a sword with his bone claws

  • Retractable Bone Claws: Wolverine's skeleton includes six retractable 12-inch long bone claws, three in each arm, that are housed beneath the skin and muscle of his forearms. Wolverine could, at will, release these slightly curved claws through his skin between the knuckles on each hand. The skin between the knuckles tears and bleeds, but the blood loss is quickly halted by his healing factor. Wolverine can unsheathe any number of his claws at once, although he needs to keep his wrists straight at the moment his claws pass from his forearms into his hands. When unsheathed, the claws are entirely within his forearms, allowing him to bend his wrists when they are extended. The claws are made of bone, unlike the claws of normal mammals which are made of keratin, and were originally believed to be bionic Adamantium implants. Like his son Daken, the bone claws are sharp and dense enough to slice through substances as durable as metals, wood, and stone.[570] Wolverine's bone claws are strong enough to easily slice through a sword.[571]

Adamantium Poisoning Immunity: After having his healing factor stripped by a virus, Beast synthesized a drug to counteract the Adamantium poisoning in Logan's system to keep him from dying.[501] It is unknown if this effect has been retained after Wolverine was resurrected.

Abilities

James Howlett (Earth-616) from Wolverine Vol 2 51 0001

Explanation by Forge for being a master tactician.

Master Tactician: Though seemingly brutish, Wolverine is highly intelligent.[556] When Forge monitored Wolverine's vitals during a Danger Room training session, he reported Logan's physical and mental state as "equivalent to an Olympic-level gymnast performing a Gold-medal-winning routine whilst simultaneously beating four chess computers in his head",[197] which gives something of an idea of the level of sophistication and tactical processing Logan was capable of utilizing while in combat. He remembered Ogun teaching him Sun Tzu's The Art of War.

Master Martial Artist: Due to his extensive training as a soldier, a CIA operative, a samurai and a member of the X-Men, Logan is an exceptional martial artist, with expertise in Japanese martial arts. He has mastered virtually every fighting style on Earth,[556] and learned other 15 forms of martial arts, including Israeli Special Forces Training.[575][37] His extraordinary hand-to-hand combat ability made him one of the finest combatants on Earth, as he was able to keep up with both the Black Panther and the Iron Fist,[576] both expert martial artists. Wolverine defeated Sabretooth several times in hand to hand combat and intelligence.[577][270] He has also defeated various hand-to-hand experts without using his claws. He even has taught the Black Widow,[78] Rogue,[578] Storm,[579] Nightcrawler,[580] Colossus, Primal,[581][582] Sunspot, Armor,[305] Jubilee,[583] Rachel Summers,[579] Phoebe Cuckoo,[584] and Shadowcat in hand to hand combat.[579]

Expert Marksman: He is an expert marksman skilled in throwing weapons and firearms, but operated more efficiently without them.[57]

Master Swordsman: Logan is proficient in Japanese sword fighting, having studied under Ogun and the Silver Samurai. He was further taught by Silver Samurai on the use of the Muramasa Blade after his first fight with Romulus.[384]

Expert Acrobat: He is skilled in gymnastics, acrobatics and aerials, for example Logan used several acrobatic moves to avoid Omega Red tendrils [585] or bullets fired at point blank at him [585]. On another occasion the Brood Queen threw Colossus towards Wolverine, thanks to his acrobatic skills Logan managed to use Colossus' flying body in mid-air as a springboard in order to leap towards the Queen.[139]

Master Advanced Covert Ops: Due to his experience traveling the world and working for various government agencies, Wolverine is also a trained expert in multiple types of weapons, vehicles, computer systems, explosives, and assassination techniques. He once said: I can put six shots into a quarter... an' get change for the gum-machine.[18]

Skilled Mechanic: Logan has exhibited capacity as an experienced mechanic.[185] Along with Kurt Wagner, he has also been the mechanic of the X-Men Blackbird.[586]

Multilingual: A polyglot; Wolverine is fluent in many languages including English, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Cheyenne, Lakota, and Spanish; he had some knowledge of French, German, Thai, Vietnamese, Farsi and Portuguese.[587] Ogun taught him Japanese ideograms.[245]

With his increased lifespan and journeys across the globe, he has been able to amass an intimate knowledge of many foreign customs and cultures. Once he saw a kabuki play of The 47 Ronin (Genroku Chūshingura) and remarked how it was one of the finest kabuki troupes he had seen. His exploits have further endowed him with vast awareness of literature and philosophy.[563]

Weaknesses

Sensory Overload: One of Wolverine's weaknesses is the fact that his heightened senses could be taken advantage of. For instance, when he was fighting the Hulk (Bruce Banner), he was nearly killed by the Hulk's thunder claps due to his heightened sense of hearing.[588]

Adamantium Allotropes: Adamantium has thirteen different allotropes (variants) that are very unstable compared to Adamantium because of their different molecular configurations and thus physical properties. For example, Adamantium nine caused Wolverine to become dizzy and weak just by being in close contact with it.[589]

Drowning: Of the few ways to kill Wolverine, given drowning cuts the brain's oxygen supply.[463] He has admitted that being kept underwater can kill him, with the healing factor only prolonging the agony.[590] Wolverine added that he is not fond of being on water, as the addition of nearly 100 pounds of Adamantium to his body reduced his buoyancy.[403]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

As Death of the Horsemen of Apocalypse, Logan was given armor to wear to conceal his true identity. Normally he wore a standard X-Men uniform or street clothes. His gloves often had grooves in the forearm so they did not tear when he unsheathed his claws.

File:Wolverine what he does.jpg

He's the best at what he does.

Adamantium: Not part of Wolverine's natural mutant attributes, Wolverine's entire skeleton, including his bone claws, were laced with the rare, artificial, and virtually indestructible alloy known as Adamantium - or True Adamantium. As a result, Wolverine's bones is virtually unbreakable.[18] The presence of the Adamantium has further enhanced the already razor-sharp edge of Wolverine's bone claws. Aside from being practically indestructible, the claws are capable of cutting through any solid material, with the known exception of Proto-Adamantium (Captain America's Shield). However, Wolverine's ability to slice completely through a substance depended upon the thickness of the substance and the amount of force he can exert. The Adamantium also weighted his blows, dramatically increasing the effectiveness of his punches and kicks. His claws is able to damage Class 100+ durability foes such as the Thing.[593] His Adamantium claws was shown to easily penetrate Thanos's chest.[594]

  • Adamantium Beta: Adamantium Beta is a metal that can bond to the human skeleton.[219] The properties of Adamantium Beta is capable of bonding directly into the structure of skeletal material while not inhibiting the living nature of the bone.[219] The only known occurrence of Adamantium Beta was during the Weapon X Project when it was experimented on Wolverine.[219] During the second part of the procedure, they laced his bones with Adamantium, and there was a reaction with his healing factor that bonded the metal with his skeleton.[219][18] As a result from Dr. Jaime Munoz's research, the Adamantium itself can regrow just as Wolverine's natural bones can.[219]

Weapons

Throughout his life, Wolverine has used a variety of bladed weapons, most frequently daggers and, at times, swords; as a samurai, he was especially skilled with the katana. He has also wielded many different types of firearms throughout his careers as a soldier, a mercenary, and a spy. While he was highly skilled with firearms and because of his perfect eyesight it is very difficult for him miss when firing a gun, he has stated on multiple occasions that he isn't fond of them and prefers to use bladed weapons, despite this, Wolverine used guns frequently after he lost his healing factor.[507]

Transportation

Notes

  • While Wolverine has slain many henchmen, and even a few of his own super powered rogues, he has only ever killed two superheroes: Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar)[331] and the Hornet (Ed McDonough).[328] Not only was the former eventually resurrected, but both of these occasions were because he had been brainwashed by The Hand.
  • In the 90s, the comics era which saw the peak of Wolverine's popularity, Marvel had the character guest-star in so many books, that from mid-1990 to mid-1993 (for 33 consecutive months), there was not a single month in which at least one non-X-Men-related book featured Logan.[595]
  • Wolverine's record number of appearances in a single month is twenty-four, which ocurred in January 2009.[596]

Trivia

  • Editor Roy Thomas conceived the idea of Wolverine; the name, size and attitude of the character, thinking it was a good idea due to the abundance of Canadian comic readers.[597]
  • Wolverine was ranked as 4th on IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Heroes in 2011.[598]
  • Wolverine was also ranked as 5th in "The Top 50 Avengers."[599]
  • Logan's main traits, those of solitude, fierceness and stumpy physique are directly inspired by those of wolverines.[600]
  • When propsing Wolverine's creation to Len Wein, Thomas gave him the requirements that "(1) He was Canadian, and announced as such right away. (2) He was short, because a wolverine is a small animal. (3) He had a quick temper, because wolverines are known for being fierce and taking on beasts far bigger than they are."[600]
  • In 1996's DC vs. Marvel, Wolverine defeated Lobo who was able to overpower Superman.[601]
  • During the earliest stages of Wolverine's creation, Roy Thomas debated whether to call him that or "the Badger." He eventually opted for "Wolverine" since the other name had connotations that included pestering, bothering being annoying.[600]
  • Thomas considers Herb Trimpe to be one of Wolverine's co-creators since he penciled the issue Wolverine first appeared in. Trimple himself didn't consider himself deserving of it.[600]
  • Wolverine was drastically different when Len Wein first introduced him. Wein envisioned the character as being young, in his early twenties as much; his claws were originally part of his gloves rather than his own body.[597]
  • One of the initial plans by David Cockrum and Chris Claremont when they took over X-Men was to reveal Logan was an an actual wolverine evolved into a humanoid by the High Evolutionary. According to Cockrum himself, Stan Lee nixed the idea.[602]
  • Chris Claremont intended for Apocalypse to be behind the original adamantium injection in Logan's body. When Barry Windsor-Smith explored Wolverine's past as Weapon X, for no reason other than courtesy towards Claremont, he introduced the idea of Professor Truett Hudson taking orders from an unrevealed higher-up, with the intention of allowing Claremont to reveal said superior was Apocalypse.[603]
  • Wolverine made a cameo appearance in the pages of DC's JLA #1 (January, 1997). In the scene, Wolverine and Doctor Doom are executed by a super-villain team known as the Hyperclan. The scene was written by Grant Morrison.
  • Wolverine carries a medical card stating that he is a war veteran[604] who has a metal plate in the head, to help him bypass metal detectors in airports.[605]
  • Logan's blood is type O, Rhesus negative.[606]
  • Wolverine told Jean Grey that he once survived for six months under a glacier by eating strips of his own arm (with the healing factor re-growing it back).[296]
  • Wolverine was once captured by S.H.I.E.L.D and imprisoned in "The Cage." His prisoner number was 412075.[287]
  • Wolverine and Spider-Man became blood brothers during a time travel adventure.[16]
  • Being the Weapon X of the Program Weapon Plus, Wolverine considered himself as a Sentinel.[296]
  • Nick Fury stated that in a perfect world, Wolverine would be a level ten S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.[545][605]
  • Deadpool has claimed to have hacked Wolverine's Tumblr account.[607]
  • Logan might suffer of post-traumatic stress disorder.[608]
  • In Alpha Flight (Vol. 2) #1 (August, 1997), when part of Department H, Wolverine was given a codename based on the Greek alphabet as Weapon X or "Chi." The letter "X" in the Greek alphabet is called "chi" and is written exactly like the "X" (ex) of the English alphabet. The use of the Greek Alphabet makes sense for Department H-related codenames. The Department has connections to teams named after letters of the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Omega.
  • According to Vindicator, it is not Wolverine's powers or fighting skills that make him dangerous, but his mind.[609]
  • In the 2007 Transformers movie, Wolverine is explicitly referenced by Glen Whitmann (Anthony Anderson). Observing scratch marks left by AX9-8946-09SU-1, Sergeant Epps (Tyrese Gibson) compares them to Freddy Krueger. Whitmann reminds him Kureger had four blades, whereas Wolverine has three, which served better for the comparison.
  • For April Fools' Day 2016, Library and Archives Canada posted a fake article announcing the acquisition of the declassified journals and military records of Wolverine. The article was accompanied by scans of an attestation paper under his name.[610]
