James Owl is the current holder of the “Ghost Dancer” mantle, a position empowered by Gitche Manitou, the Great Spirit of the Manidoog, to protect the gateways separating the Earth realm from the Secret Worlds under his jurisdiction: Tokpela, Topka, and Kuskurza.

History

Eons ago, Gitche Manitou (the Great Spirit of the Manidoog) and his son Tawa (god of the sun) created three worlds prior to the current world. Each of these worlds were eventually destroyed as a result of the sinful behavior of their inhabitants, but these doomed realms and their inhabitants continued to exist as the “Secret Worlds.” Gitche Manitou empowered the “Ghost Dancer” to serve as the gatekeeper between these realms. The title and powers of Ghost Dancer were passed down through generations of mortals in the Earth realm.

James Owl's human form

Prior to the birth of James Owl, his grandfather, Nathaniel Great Owl (who served as the Ghost Dancer at the time), dedicated James' unborn spirit to the task of succeeding him as the next Ghost Dancer. James' father, Ethan, became a successful entertainment attorney and eventually moved his family from their Hopi reservation to Beverly Hills, California. While James was in college, his grandfather was killed in New York City by a skinwalker demon calling itself “Manitou” who sought to usurp Ghost Dancer's powers in order to access the Secret Worlds and unleash the spirits that inhabited those worlds to slaughter humanity. The Ghost Dancer mantle was soon inherited by an unsuspecting James, who, following a vision quest through the Secret Worlds during which time his worthiness to assume the mantle of Ghost Dancer was tested by his forefathers, defeated the skinwalker demon and his Clown demon subordinates.

After the Civil War, James Owl was listed as a potential recruit for the Initiative.

As a Ghost Dancer and gatekeeper between the Secret Worlds, James Owl possesses a number of mystical powers bestowed to him by Gitche Manitou, such as energy projection, the ability to create interdimensional apertures that enabled travel between the Secret Worlds, and the ability to grow in size. As part of his initiation into the Ghost Dancer persona, he gained access to the collective knowledge of his ancestors who previously bore the Ghost Dancer mantle.
