History

Origin[]

Jennifer Takeda (Earth-616) from Avengers Academy Vol 1 3 0003

Boyfriend in a Coma

One day, Jennifer was kissing her boyfriend Greg when he suddenly fell into a coma. She was taken to the hospital to be tested, where it was discovered that her body leaked radiation and she was the cause of the coma.[3]

While her parents were accusing Roxxon of being responsible, she herself was accused by Greg's parents. Meanwhile, she was asked to write her stories by countless media.[3]

Norman Osborn kidnapped Jenny and jump-started her powers against her will. When she returned home, her family became exposed to her long enough that they became ill and her dog died. Hank Pym met with Jenny and invited her to the Avengers Academy. Hazmat was forced to wear a protective radiation suit at all times when around others.[1]

Avengers Academy[]

Jennifer Takeda (Earth-616) from Avengers Academy Vol 1 33

Hazmat as a member of Avengers Academy

Jennifer was recruited into the newly formed Avengers Academy alongside other young potential heroes Veil (Madeline Berry), Striker (Brandon Sharpe), Finesse (Jeanne Foucault), Reptil (Humberto Lopez), and Mettle (Ken Mack). She and the rest of the class were lead to believe they were among those most likely to become heroes, but they quickly uncovered files on them revealed they were most likely to become villains.[1]

Hazmat plotted her revenge on Osborn along with fellow students Mettle and Veil. The three went to the Raft with the help of the Thunderbolts. Hazmat found Norman's cell and she and Mettle tried to kill him. The instructors foiled them and they went back to the Quinjet where Luke Cage told her, Mettle, and Veil about Osborn killing his family.[4]

Later the team went out with Mettle and Hazmat shrunk onto Wasp's hand. Whirlwind appeared and attacked a guy, and the team used their powers to defeat Whirlwind, but in doing so become public.[5]

After being elected class leader of Avengers Academy, Reptil decided to mediate Mettle and Hazmat's differences, saying that they make a good couple, they became disgusted. Mentallo escaped from his transport truck and started messing with the Avengers. The team went to intervene, resulting in Reptil ripping his arm off.[6]

Final Exam[]

Mettle and Hazmat were at the beach, but their unusual appearances make it hard for them to enjoy it. Hazmat received a call. They traveled to the Briggs Building to meet their former teammate Veil, who was working with another subject of Osborn's experiments, Jeremy Briggs, who had been working on a cure for all their conditions. The couple decided that to undergo his Clean Slate treatment and were restored to their normal forms. Free from their deformities, the couple went out to enjoy life as normal people.[7]

Jeremy Briggs however revealed his true plan to to Veil and Striker: To remove all superpowered beings' powers only allowing the worthy to possess them. Veil ran to tell Mettle and Hazmat and persuaded them to take the so-called antidote and restore their powers for good. Sharing a final kiss on the lips, Hazmat, Mettle and the group confronted Jeremy and his accomplice, the Enchantress (Sylvie Lushton), on the rooftop of his building.[8]

White Tiger and Reptil drew on the full power of their magic, gaining the upper hand on the Enchantress. Sensing her defeat, she teleported away but not before getting her face slashed by White Tiger.[9] X-23 did some slicing and dicing of Briggs, releasing an acid attack on her stomach, destroying it in the process. Finesse noticed this as the perfect opportunity to use X-23's hands as weapons. Finesse grabbed X-23's wrists, and stabbed into Briggs' vital arteries. As he lay bleeding out, Finesse started stemming the loss of blood by cutting off the flow. Finesse reminded Briggs about why they were recruited: they were at risk of becoming villains. As she explained this, she untied the cloth that had been keeping Briggs from bleeding to death, and walked off leaving him to die. In the aftermath, Hazmat told Mettle that killing Briggs was completely worth it, and that she had no remorse.[10]

Avengers Arena[]

Hazmat was one of the 16 super powered teens teleported to Murderworld by Arcade. Hazmat and Mettle had just slept together for the first time when they were teleported away from Avengers Academy. As the game began, Arcade was about to kill a defiant Hazmat, but Mettle sacrificed himself in Jen's place and was blown up by Arcade.[11]

Hazmat teamed up with fellow Avengers Academy members X-23 and Reptil, and only briefly with the Runaways Chase and Nico. Her teammate Reptil was badly injured by a mysterious attacker. Hazmat and X-23 mistakenly blamed Chase and Nico, destroying their food source. Later, Hazmat stepped on a trap set by Arcade which caused X-23's trigger scent to spread among her party. X-23 was affected by it and attacked the injured Reptil and Hazmat. Reptil transforms into a winged dinosaur form and carried Hazmat away from X-23's attack to a beach sector of Murderworld. She and Reptil stayed on the beach where he recovered until a group of other contestants were teleported by Nico to their destination. Reptil convinced Hazmat to join the fight against Apex, who had been murdering the other young heroes on the island.

On the last day in Murderworld, Hazmat's powers went haywire.[12] She began to emit a great and uncontrollable amount of radiation. As she cried out for help, Reptil, in dinosaur form, scooped Hazmat up in his mouth and leaped into the water before a massive underwater explosion occurred. After the teen's battle against the island itself, Hazmat crawled back onto the beach, no longer glowing and out of her containment suit. She convinced the other survivors to make a pact to never talk about what happened in Murderworld.[13]

Avengers Undercover[]

Three months after Murderworld Hazmat joined other survivors of Murderworld in tracking down Cullen Bloodstone in Bagalia, now in control of her powers and able to go without her containment suit. After finding Cullen, the seven of them were teleported by the Masters of Evil to a new Murderworld event being held at Arcade's Massacre Casino. Hazmat, upon discovering Arcade, suddenly went into a state of catatonic shock while the others fought and brutalized him. He mocked them for being unable to kill him before Hazmat recovered and seemingly fried him to death.[14] They were taken into custody by S.H.I.E.L.D. before being teleported back to Bagalia by Daimon Hellstrom. Baron Zemo invited the seven Murderworld survivors to stay in Bagalia and join the Masters of Evil.[15] Hoping to restore their image as heroes, Hazmat and the others devised a plan to stay in Bagalia and to take down the Masters of Evil from within, though Cammi decided not to join them and was captured by the Constrictor.[16]

Months later, Madame Masque had Hazmat and Aiden accompany her on a mission Madripoor to meet with Mystique and Sabretooth. There, she trained Hazmat and Aiden by having them fight Hand ninjas. Afterwards, Hazmat and Aiden watched the sunset together, and Aiden surprised Jennifer by kissing her. Now on the inside, Hazmat called Professor Pym from a stranger's phone for help against the Masters. Back in Bagalia, she goes to bring Death Locket in on the plan, but is betrayed to the Young Masters, whom she single-handedly dispatched. [17] The backup she called for arrived, playing into the Masters' real plan of trapping the world's heroes in Bagalia while they teleport away to enjoy a worldwide crime spree.

Cammi, utilizing fellow prisoner Arcade's powers, escaped and foiled Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil's plans, after which the trapped heroes left Bagalia. Hazmat rejoined her friends from Avengers Academy, Braddock Academy, and the Runaways, and together they went to enjoy summertime at the lake.[18]

Captain Marvel[]

Some time later, Hazmat went to Tony Stark for assistance after her radioactive powers began to leak again, her suit now using a force field to assist in containment. He then set her up in a mentee role under Captain Marvel so that she could help her manage her powers. [19] Later that day, she was trapped alongside Captain Marvel, Spider-Woman, Echo, and reporter Ripley Ryan by unwitting Som, son of the Nuclear Man on an apocalyptic temporally-accelerated Roosevelt Island, in a barrier made of her own drained powers. After Rogue helped Som to control his power siphoning, Hazmat's powers returned and she fought the Nuclear Man, who used her powers as a battery against her before he was brought down by Captain Marvel. [20]

After they helped Captain Marvel prevent a ship from crashing into the city streets, Spider-Woman brought her along to house party with Echo, Monica Rambeau and She-Hulk to remind Carol of her responsibilities and future. [21] When the reporter Ripley Ryan had stolen Carol's powers and was near total victory, Hazmat stood against Star, and after her defeat, admitted to Captain Marvel that she was inspired by her and proud to be her sidekick. [22]

When Carol took up the mantle of Kree Accuser, she had Dr. Strange split the power of the Universal Weapon between Jen, Spider-Woman, and War Machine to assist her in clearing the name of her recently discovered sister.[23] Innocent of all charges, Lauri-Ell took the power of the Universal Weapon for herself and became the new Accuser, joining the group against invading Cotati forces.[24] She also assisted Carol against Vox Supreme's kidnapping of all individuals with the Marvel name, captured in one of his black suits [25] before being freed by Carol, Phyla-Vell and Binary. [26] The group then fought against an army of black suits alongside the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy before Binary destroyed Vox Supreme. [27]

After a girls' trip to Las Vegas,[28] she accompanied Captain Marvel, War Machine, and Spider-Woman in their response to Rogue's distress call, teaming up with the X-Men to rescue her from the Brood. [29] Her team surrounded, Hazmat, protected by former classmate Wolverine, unleashed a huge blast to fry the onslaught of attacking aliens.[30] Back on the ship with Rogue, she connected with the X-Man over the isolation caused by their power sets and their dubious origins, expressing that she had long wanted to meet her. [31] They back up the team in battle-ready space eco-suits in battle against the Brood Empress and her legions, losing Binary in the process.[32]

Back in New York, she helped Spider-Woman throw a large party with many super hero attendees. Captain Marvel and Iron Man discussed her again, the latter claiming she wasn't ready for the Avengers, while Captain Marvel defended her and said she wanted to do more for young heroes falling through the cracks.[33]

Avengers[]

Hazmat responded to Captain America's Avengers Priority Alert for assistance during the Endless Night that saw massive vampire attacks on the world. She joined the Avengers alongside Cap, Quicksilver, Hercules, and Hawkeye, fighting to preventing kidnappings before being beamed up to the Helicarrier commandeered by Baron Blood.[34]. There she helped free prisoners taken as food sources. [35]

Powers

Hazardous Physiology: Jennifer's unique biology can produce various deadly substances from her body. Early into her training with the Avengers her powers caused her to be noxious to others, and prolonged exposure to her would result in illness and death. She is unable to consciously contain the amount of harmful substances her body produces naturally. In one instance, she became temporarily able to control her emission levels after generating massive explosion in Murderworld, but lost this ability soon after as her body saturated with radiation again.

  • Radiation Emission: The primary manifestation of her powers is the ability to emit wavelengths up and down the electromagnetic spectrum. Due to her body creating natural radiation from her own body, she can create various forms of blasts with deleterious effects. She is also able to produce an EMP, which can disable anything electrical.[3]
    • Light Generation: Hazmat can illuminate her surroundings with her powers. By reaching into the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum, she is able to produce wavelengths that destroy Vampires.[34]
  • Contaminant Immunity: Hazmat is naturally immune to the various deadly substances such as radiation.

Abilities

  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: Jennifer has training in unarmed combat and is a good athlete.[36]

Weaknesses

  • Containment Dependency: Due to being poisonous to others with prolonged exposure, Hazmat must wear a containment suit. After the ordeal suffered in Arena Jennifer managed to gain control of her powers and no longer needed her suit.[37] She would eventually begin leaking causticity in later years however; once again needing a regulator for her powers.[19]

Formerly:

  • Anger issues: Whenever she is angry, she tends to lose control of her actions and can sometimes almost blow up from anger.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Hazmat, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, has quit the Avengers and is now in hiding.[37]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

Hazmat Suit: Previously, due to the side effect of her powers, Hazmat needed to stay in a containment suit whenever she was outside of a controlled environment (e.g. a room which could isolate her from others who could be killed by her substances).[1]

Weapons

Notes

  • Hazmat has a Beta-Level Avengers Security Clearance.[2]
  • It is implied that Mettle (due to his organic iridium body) was immune to the substances she produces, meaning that he is one of the few she can be around without her containment suit without killing them.[11]
  • Leech is capable of dampening her powers, making it possible (while he is dampening them) for her to be outside of her containment suit without being a danger to anyone.[39]

Trivia

  • Due to his immunity to her radiation, Mettle and Hazmat began a relationship with each other, giving them the thing they needed most; someone who understood the other's pain.[11]
  • As seen in her origin story, Hazmat has a Dazzler poster in her bedroom.[3]
  • She was 18 years old at the beginning of Avengers Arena.[11]
  • Hazmat is able to communicate in American Sign Language. [40]
