Joe Marone was a mob boss who was active in the 1940s. By the fall of 1942, he was incarcerated in a local jail for an undisclosed crime. He and his gang plotted a jail break, and when the time was coming, they paid some local kids to deliver a note to Marone to inform them of the time. This note was forced into the hands of Jerry, a young newspaper boy who was bullied by his peers. Giving the note over to Marone while pretending to sell papers to the crooks in the jail, Jerry watched in silent horror as Marone's gang broke him out of jail. Marone then went to hide out at his girl's place.

While he was doing so, Jerry was met by the other-dimensional hero known as the Vision who pretended he was a genie summoned by the guilt-wracked boy and offered to help bring Marone back to justice. Sending Jerry with a note that claimed that Marone was going to double-cross his girl, Marone demanded the boy tell him who gave him the note. When the Vision teleported into the room through Marone's cigar smoke, he had the crook on the ropes until his moll held Jerry at gunpoint, forcing the hero to let them leave.

However, when they stopped to let the boy out and eliminate him, the Vision teleported through the exhaust fumes of their care and beat Marone and his woman into submission. Tying them up, he learned the location of his gang and rounded them up for the authorities.[1]

Marone's fate following his recapture is unknown.
