One of the greatest scientists and occultists, Doctor Faustus was always one of the most traditionalist and devout members of Hydra, being loyal mainly to the deities of the organization, the demonic entities of Lilith and Chthon.[1]
History
Infernal Rising[]
Through research he learned that after Lilith was killed by Hunter and entombed by the Knights of Wundagore, the only map to Lilith's tomb was secreted away in a vault along with the Varkath Star, the amulet that could control any demon, a spell to summon Mephisto, and a shield to deflect hellfire. The vault was warded by powerful spells to not open until the next dimensional alignment known as the "Midnight Sun". The hope of the Knights was that should all other defenses against the return of Lilith fail, Mephisto could be summoned and turned against her at the crucial moment.[2]
Faustus learned that Demon Zarathos had the power to break the protective wards, but Zarathos was himself already a prisoner of Mephisto. To break him out, Faustus involved Satana Hellstrom. By posing as "Fenn", a human who desired revenge on Mephisto for killing his family and nothing more, he convinced Satana to aid him in exchange for the Varkath Star itself. Satana broke Zarathos free, and they formed a Triumvirate, hiding on the Earthly plane while Zarathos healed from his torment and regained his strength. "Fenn" supplied Satana with eager males, whose souls she drained to power both herself and Zarathos, while he himself tinkered with devices that shielded their hiding place from Earth's magical protectors.[2]
Impatient, Zarathos demanded they go to the vault before "Fenn" was fully ready. They discovered the vault buried in Transia and Zarathos used his powers to unearth it, but was unable to break the wards before they were attacked by the Midnight Suns and had to teleport away. They learned however that the spell was degrading and would open the Vault before the full Midnight Sun alignment. Fenn had left sensors to monitor the seal's degradation and bided time as Zarathos grew in power. With only hours remaining, they went back to Transia and faced the Suns again. Zarathos and Satana fought the group with the army of the Soulless, while Fenn used his technology to accelerate the seal's degradation and break into the vault. With its contents before him, he only grabbed the map to Lilith and had Hydra mystic teleport him away, uncaring who the Varkath Star fell to or what they were going to do with it.[2]
Midnight Suns[]
Hydra, thanks to the contributions of Faustus, found the tomb of Lilith, Mother of Demons to carry out the conquest of her world through the ancient prophecy of the Midnight Sun. Faustus' own activities attracted the attention of the Avengers. Captain Marvel attempted to apprehend him once, though he got away. Her second attempt was more successful, as Danvers and Hunter were able to locate and apprehend Faustus. Before they could interrogate him or bring him back to their base, Faustus was killed by a shot from Crossbones that disintegrated his entire body, leaving only his journal behind.[1]Attributes
Abilities
- Master Scientific: Faustus is one of the few human scientists who understands part of the scientific nature of magic, being able to handle gamma radiation deducing that it comes from Lilin.
