History

Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters[]

John Allerdyce, also known as Pyro, was a mutant with the ability to cause any fire, however small, to grow in size and intensity and project it. He was a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.[1]

He was a friend of his classmates Bobby Drake and Rogue, though his bad temper with humans kept getting in the way of things. Following an attack on the school by William Stryker the three of them escaped with Wolverine and retreated to Drake family home in suburban Boston. Bobby's disgruntled brother called the police, telling them that mutants were holding his family hostage. The police arrived and drew their weapons on Wolverine and his young companions. A police officer mistook Wolverine's claws for knives and ordered him to drop them. When Wolverine tried to explain and sheathed his claws, the officer shot Wolverine in the head (though he was obviously not dead). This caused Rogue and Bobby to surrender, but Pyro became enraged and said "You know those mutants you here about in the news? I'm the worst one." He then attacked the officers and destroyed their cars. Just before his attack could turn deadly, Rogue grabbed hold of his ankle with her bare hand. Pyro fell to the ground, drained of his powers, which Rogue then used to put the fires out.[2]

Brotherhood of Mutants[]

Ultimately, Pyro was tempted away from Xavier's influence by Magneto, who observed the young man's ambition and the strength of his powers. Pyro followed Magneto and the shapeshifting Mystique as they escaped from Alkali Lake and joined Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants.[2]

He attended a gathering at an abandoned church where the Brotherhood recruited the Omega Gang. He later defended Magneto when the Omega Quill said that he was just a man in a cape. Pyro was with Magneto when the Brotherhood attempted to free Mystique from her mobile prison. When Mystique took a cure dart for Magneto, Pyro shot a stream of fire so powerful that it left behind no remains of the man who had fired the dart.[3]

He later had a brief confrontation with his former friend Bobby Drake a.k.a. Iceman outside a medical center that was housing cure injections for mutants. After Bobby backed down Pyro blew up the center. At Alcatraz Island, he torched cars that Magneto threw. Pyro fought Iceman and briefly gained the upper hand, but Iceman defeated him.[3] He was carried to safety by Bobby as the facility around them collapsed.[4]

The Void[]

By the time of the war between the mutants and the Sentinels, Pyro has been presumed dead by the Free Mutants.[5] In truth, he had been pruned by the TVA and sent to the Void where he began working for Cassandra Nova.[6] At some point he made a secret deal with Mr. Paradox to become his informant and secretly keep an eye on Cassandra.[7]

Pyro was in charge of a convoy that came across a Minuteman and later Deadpool, Wolverine and Johnny Storm, the latter being of a special interest to Cassandra who had been trying to capture him for years. Going on the offensive, Johnny changed into his Human Torch form and blasted a jet of flame on Pyro, who effortlessly absorbed it. Sabretooth recognized Wolverine and charged him, but Wolverine cut his head off in a single slicing move, killing him instantly. Pyro then ordered Toad to activate a magnet which pulled in and immobilized Wolverine, who along with Deadpool and Johnny Storm was secured in a cage to be taken back to Cassandra.[7]

Back at the base, Cassandra killed Johnny Storm for insulting her and then spoke to Deadpool and Wolverine until Alioth showed up, forcing everyone to scramble for cover and allowing Wolverine and Deadpool to escape. Later that day Pyro informed Paradox that Alioth failed to kill those two, much to Paradox's frustration. Paradox then ordered Pyro to kill Cassandra Nova for him in exchange for being let out of the Void. Pyro took the opportunity when the Resistance attacked the base and Cassandra's powers were briefly negated with the Juggernaut's helmet. Pyro shot Cassandra in the chest several times with his gun and began gloating, only for Wolverine to knock him out before Pyro could finish his motivational exposition speech.[7]

By the time Pyro awoke, Deadpool and Wolverine were gone and Cassandra was back to the full use of her powers. She prepared to go into his mind with her powers, but Pyro freaked out and simply told her about the deal he had with Paradox. To get back at the TVA for this betrayal, Cassandra decided to leave the Void and use the TVA's Time Ripper to destroy all realities, leaving only the Void for her to rule. She opened up a portal to Earth-10005 and walked with Pyro through it, after which she snapped his neck, killing him instantly and throwing his corpse back into the Void.[7]

Attributes

Powers

  • Fire Manipulation: John Allerdyce is a class four mutant with the power to control fire. He can increase small flames into fireballs, or put fire out, but he can't create fire himself and requires a source of it before he can use his power. Normally he used his Zippo lighter as such source.[2]
  • Fire Absorption: He was shown to absorbed all of Johnny Storm fire.

Weaknesses

  • Pyro can't conjure flames himself. He needs an outside source.[2]

Paraphernalia

Weapons

  • Flamethrowers, formerly a Zippo lighter

Trivia

  • Unlike his comic book counterpart who is Australian, this Pyro is American.
  • Pyro is hinted to have had a tragic past shown when he looks at Bobby's family photos.[2]
  • Pyro's costume design in Deadpool & Wolverine appears to be based off of his Ultimate Universe counterpart.
