History

John Macomber was the patriarch of the Macomber family, which had become wealthy due to their successful coffin-crafting business. Unfortunately, they paid their workers a pittance while they lived opulently, which left the town of Macombersville and its citizens nearly destitute at all times. When he died, his body was collected by the town's funeral director Charles Beecher, who intended to charge the family a hefty fee for use of one of their own "deluxe model" coffins. However, Macomber had only fallen into a deep comatose state and revived at Beecher's funeral parlor. Refusing to be denied his fee, Beecher forced John Macomber back into his coffin and shut it closed. Sealed inside, Macomber could only pound against the lid until either a lack of air or the stress of attempting to free himself finally caused him to expire. Ironically, Beecher died alongside Macomber -- literally -- when he opened the coffin to examine the body, only to slip on a candle that had fallen on the floor earlier and fall in, the lid slamming shut behind him. When the pallbearers arrived, they heard Beecher pounding against the lid but, assuming that it was John Macomber still alive, decided to bury him anyway, having come to hate the Macomber family in general and their father in particular for his miserly ways.
