John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, better known as J. R. R. Tolkien, was an English writer best known as the author of the classic high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

Tolkien's works, namely The Lord of the Rings became a far-reaching cultural phenomenon. Prominent figures of the superhero and villain community are fans of Tolkien's works. For instance, when Karl Lykos became a humanoid Pterodon, he took the name "Sauron" after the villain of the books;[1] the door of Billy Kaplin's room has a sign which reads "Speak, friend, and enter" is a reference from The Lord of The Rings;[2] Spider-Man once referred to a group of heroes he joined forces with as the Fellowship of the Ring;[3] the Runaways once went to a drive-in theater to watch the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring based on Tokien's work.[4] Captain America was also a fan of Tolkien.[5]
