Mr. Lee worked as an accountant for Silver Sablinova's Symkarian agency Silver Sable International. At the Foreigner's request, Lee embezzled money from his boss and escaped. Sable sent Paladin after Lee, and Paladin got Lee. Lee then confessed to Paladin that the Foreigner had been behind the plot.
History
Jonathan Lee had been a criminal accountant experienced in laundering but ended up in prison. Silver Sable, impressed by Lee's talent, got him out of prison so that he could work for her, foiling other people's laundering. Lee also worked as a consultant[2] for Silver Sable International, coordinating the expenses of Sable's mercenary operations.[3] Due to the enormous value of his services, he was paid very generously by Sable, more than most of her employees and freelancers including Paladin.[2] Lee often protested against the loss-making missions that Sable took,[4][5] and presented bureaucratic complaints that Sable actively chose to ignore.[3] Lee operated out of both Sable's base, Castle Sable, in Symkaria,[4] and the Symkarian Embassy in New York City, headquarters for operations on American soil;[3] Lee had some responsibility for the security systems at the Embassy.[6]
Lee objected to hiring violent bounty hunter Karl "Crippler" Striklan, although Sable's manager, Mortimer, was already accustomed to Lee disapproving every such decision.[3] Shortly after, the Embassy suffered an attack by the far-right group Watchdogs, and Sable decided to talk to Lee because the Embassy's security system had been insufficient.[6] Not long afterward, Lee attempted to protest to Sable because she had hired Paladin for a mission in South America that had not yielded direct profit, and to those costs was added damage caused by the Wild Pack in Castle Doom, Latveria, whose owner insisted that Sable pay. Menacingly, Lee proposed cutting top salaries (which did not worry Paladin, since he was freelancing and other employers were willing to pay his price). Lorna Kleinfeldt, Sable's personnel manager, physically shook Lee and ordered him to make the accounts balance, or she would "cut Lee's pay" (said in such a way that it could have been a metaphor).[5] In fact, Lee did reduce Paladin's wages.[7] Even so, Lee stuck to his accountant guns and, when Sable decided to leave Castle Sable on a mission to stop the criminal organization Genesis Coalition could use the Cyberwarriors as a weapon, Lee protested that no one was paying them for that mission. Once again, Sable stepped over Lee.[4]
The Foreigner, a crime lord enemy (and occasional ally) of Sable, sought a controlling interest in Silver Sable International. The Foreigner used Lee, possibly under duress, to make Lee embezzle[7] millions of dollars from Sable,[8] a considerable amount of the company's capital gains that put them in trouble.[1] An associate of Lee in this operation was money launderer Maurice Grauline.[9] The Foreigner paid Lee for his service, as well as taking other action against Sable.[8] Lee then fled with the money.[2]
As soon as Mortimer found out, he informed Sable, and she sent Paladin to track down Lee[1] in an operation that would last weeks.[9] Paladin began working with a technician at the Symkarian Embassy, discovering details about Lee on the computers.[2] During that time, Sable's lover Jacques Girard learned of Lee's crime and took pity on Sable.[10] Meanwhile, Paladin found Grauline in Canada and, under threat, Grauline told Paladin where Lee was.[9] After beating up more people, Paladin finally found Lee and apprehended him at Plaza Hotel, New York City. Paladin hung Lee from a flagpole thirty stories up and threatened to hurt Lee's crotch if he didn't tell him where the money was. Lee framed the Foreigner, explaining his plans.[7] Possibly after this, Lee went to prison, and perhaps the Foreigner attempted to assassinate him. In any case, Silver Sable International's financial matters were considered solved soon after that.[11]Attributes
