History

Human Torch's history is presumably the same as his Earth-616 counterpart's.

He one day let Reed Richards that Spider-Man had come by so he could study his new costume. Johnny watched as Richards studied the costume and determined that the suit was actually alive and was trying to bond with Spider-Man. He then witnessed Richards and Spider-Man argue over what to do with the creature with Richards wanting to study it and remove it from Spider-Man while Spider-Man wanted to keep it and treat with respect as a living creature.[3]

After Spider-Man began killing criminals, Johnny helped Reed search for Spider-Man, but he was unable to locate Spider-Man.[4] Spider-Man eventually freed himself from the symbiote's grasp, but the symbiote bonded with Richards and took over the Baxter Building by engulfing it with symbiote biomass. Equipped with Richards' genius, the symbiote was able to create symbiote biomass that was resistant to Johnny's flames. When Spider-Man arrived to help, Johnny lashed out at him, blaming him for the situation because he refused to give up the symbiote. Johnny's sister Sue calmed him down and asked Spider-Man what he knew about the symbiote. When Spider-Man went inside the Baxter Building to stop the symbiote, Johnny and Spider-Man's girlfriend Mary Jane Watson went in with him.

While Johnny and Spider-Man were traveling up an elevator shaft to get to Richards' lab, Johnny was forced to flee when a symbiote possessed-Thing attacked him. Spider-Man was able to deal with Thing while Johnny made his way to Richards' lab. Johnny confronted the symbiote who had possessed Richards, but Richards was wearing armor that protected him from Johnny's flames. The symbiote then unleashed a swarm of symbiotes upon New York City. As the symbiote was about to kill Johnny, he was shot at by Mary Jane who ordered the symbiote to leave Johnny alone.[1]

Johnny got Mary Jane out of the Baxter Building when the symbiote planned to kill her. The symbiote and a cadre of symbiote-possessed heroes chased after them. Johnny dropped Mary Jane when a possessed Captain America hit him with his shield, but she was rescued by Sue. Torch and Mary Jane got away. Torch then switched places with Peter and impersonated him with an Image Inducer. He tricked the symbiote into releasing Reed and the other heroes in exchange for possessing him, though the symbiote killed Reed. Johnny fled into the Baxter Building with the symbiote in pursuit. He then killed the symbiote with his flames, freeing the heroes under the symbiote's control.[2]
