Ka-Zar's Tree House was a large tree house that Ka-Zar built. It was located in the Savage Land and was the first dwelling of their own that Ka-Zar and Shanna shared. On maps, it is sometimes labelled as "Ka-Zar, Shanna's Home"[1] or as "Ka-Zar and Shanna's treehouse."[2]

History

After he and Shanna returned to the Savage land after their first visit to the neighboring region of Pangea, Ka-Zar decided, perhaps as a way of showing his commitment to Shana, to build a more permanent dwelling for just the two of them. Since he wanted it to be a surprise, Ka-Zar began sneaking away at night from the camp he shared with Shanna to work on the tree house.[3]

Once it was completed, Ka-Zar led a blindfolded Shanna to the tree house and showed it to her. Shanna was delighted by their new home, at least in part because she saw it as proof of Ka-Zar's love for her. However, as Ka-Zar showed her around and began to hint at why he had included some other, little rooms, they both heard and saw a seaplane that landed in the nearby Crystal Lake, and went to greet the new arrivals, Dr. Courtland, his daughter Ramona, and their employees, Charlie and Norm. Although they claimed to be a botanical expedition associated with New York University that had come to collect some plant specimens,[3] they were actually undercover agents of A.I.M. who were searching for a certain plant that could be used to make a powerful biologically-based explosive, and Ramona was actually Colonel Ramona Starr, the leader.[4]

Ka-Zar's fascination with anything related to New York City led him to invite the expedition to stay at the tree house, something that Shanna only discovered when she returned to their new home and found that Ka-Zar had put Ramona in what was to have been Shanna's room. Although incredibly irritated by this, Shanna's resolve to trust her relationship with Ka-Zar led her to agree to sleep outside for the couple of weeks that the visitors were going to stay.

On the day before the expedition was to depart, Ramona's manipulations led to the death of Charlie. The next morning, while Ka-Zar was away collecting a final sample of the Kulu plant with Dr. Courtland and Norm, Shanna and Ramona had a confrontation during which Ramona revealed that she expected Ka-Zar to leave with them. When Shanna walked away, saying that Ka-Zar would stay with her, Ramona pulled her gun and tried to "accidentally" shoot Shanna, but Zabu's presence caused Ramona, who was allergic to cats, to sneeze. This made her first shot miss and gave Shanna the chance to tackle her. As the two women struggled for the gun, Ramona fired three more shots, the last of which hit Ka-Zar in the forehead. After examining him, Dr. Courtland told Shanna that the bullet was lodged in Ka-Zar's brain and that the only surgeon he knew of who could save him was in Manhattan.[3]

To save Ka-Zar's life, Shanna and Zabu accompanied the Courtlands and Norm on the seaplane back to New York City, leaving the Savage Land and the tree house behind.[5]

Several weeks later, after some unpleasant and traumatic adventures in the civilized world, a dying Ka-Zar brought Zabu and a now-insane Shanna back to the Savage Land in the belief that it was her only hope to get sane again. However, when Ka-Zar collapsed soon after arrival, Zabu ran to Aerie Shalan in Pangea to get help, and returned with their ally, the Aerian warrior Buth.[6]

As Buth flew Ka-Zar to Aerie Shalan to get help, they passed over the tree house that Ka-Zar had fashioned for Shanna with his own two hands, now empty and unused and lifeless. Both Ka-Zar and Shanna were restored to health at Aerie Shalan.[7]

Weeks later, after Ka-Zar had been banished from Pangea, he, Shanna and Zabu returned to the tree house and were surprised to find that Ka-Zar's nefarious brother, Parnival Plunder, had been living there ever since he had traveled to the Savage Land after being informed of Ka-Zar's (faked) death in New York City. Although Ka-Zar was rightfully suspicious of his brother's claim that he was just there because he needed to hide out for a bit, Shanna insisted that he was family and should be given a chance to prove that he was truly repentant. As a result, Parnival spent two weeks living with Ka-Zar and Shanna while successfully keeping them from finding out that he was really trying to acquire some more Anti-Metal.[8]

Parnival continued to stay at the tree house until his scheme was revealed to both Ka-Zar and Shanna, but later seemingly died while saving Shanna from one of his criminal allies. Soon afterwards, Shanna, Ka-Zar and Zabu were teleported away from Earth by an ancient alien artifact, the Motyka Bone.[9] After an extragalactic adventure, during which they learned the origin of the Savage Land, Ka-Zar, Shanna and Zabu managed to return to the Savage Land, bringing with them many other Savage Land residents who had been teleported away over the centuries. Having also learned that Shanna was pregnant, Ka-Zar, Shanna and Zabu all returned to their tree house home, intending for their family to lead a full happy life in the Savage Land.[10]

Only weeks later, a giant armored alien being claiming to be Terminus invaded the Savage Land and soon confronted Ka-Zar and a research team he was guiding.[11] Although Ka-Zar survived his attack, the rest of the study team were killed. Later, as Shanna was in the tree house looking at herself in a mirror and wondering when her pregnancy would begin to show, Terminus stepped on the tree house as he walked through the Savage Land. Although not directly struck, Shanna was forced to jump from the tree house as it collapsed, and was saved from a possible injury when Starfox caught her as she fell and deposited her safely on the ground.[12]

Terminus subsequently destroyed both Pangea and the Savage Land, and what wasn't vaporized was soon flash-frozen as the Antarctic reclaimed both tropical jungles in a matter of minutes.[13]

Notes

  • Some time after the Savage Land and Pangea were destroyed, it was revealed that the Terminus who had destroyed those two regions and who had then died in the Antarctic cold after Hercules ripped open his armor had not been the real Terminus. Instead, as revealed in Quasar #7, the being responsible for the destruction was a Deviant named Jorro who had been recruited by the real Terminus to build a replica of his space armor and to then pose as the actual Terminus while wearing/piloting it to carry out certain missions.
