Notes

  • The first story begins with full-page panel, followed by a recap page that covers the last issue and a flashback page that catches up to what happened on that first page. This means that four of the five main characters appear in a one-page flashback set between the end of the last issue and this issue's first page.
  • All of the demons who appear in this issue, including the centaurs that Shanna calls "Pholus" and "Nessus" and the harpies encountered above the Forest of Living Trees, are apparently/presumably some of Belasco's demon-children. As such, they have no direct/genetic connections to other groups of Centaurs or Harpies.
  • Although the ship's log of Captain Dante Alighieri was written in Latin, which Ka-Zar can't read, the "living trees" seem to speak English and the signs in the underground maintenance levels seem to be written in English. This could be a massive anomaly. Alternatively, it could be another example of how, as explained by an editorial response in the letters page of Ka-Zar the Savage #13, some dialogue and writing that are seemingly in English are actually spoken or written in Ancient Atlantean which is similar to Thallic/Thelic, the language spoken by the upper classes in Pangea, the Aerians, and some of the inhabitants of the original Savage Land (including both Ka-Zar and Shanna), and that the creators of this issue had taken the liberty of translating those words into English for those readers who never took Thallic in school.
  • It is never made clear whether the "living trees" that seem to have faces (with eyes, noses and mouths) and can talk and react/think are actual organic trees or simply disguised animatronic trees.
  • In this issue, Shanna assumes that the locket with Beatrice's miniature portrait inside must belong to Dante. However, in the next issue it will be revealed that the locket actually belonged to Belasco.

Trivia

  • In the real world, miniature portraits of loved ones did not exist before the mid-fifteenth century, so men of the thirteenth century could not have worn lockets containing such miniatures.
