History

Circa 6000 BC,[1] about 12,000 years after the Great Cataclysm,[2] the young prince Kamuu of the nomadic Homo mermani arrived at the ruins of Atlantis. He had traveled there with his father, King Stegor of the Eastern Sea, and his army to battle the army of King Tanas of the Western Sea. The warring nations both wished to claim the city and its hidden treasures. In the joust of kings that was held before the battle, Stegor killed Tanas with his lance. Then, as the battle began, Queen Elanna, widow of Tanas, personally led the charge against Stegor's hordes and it was she who killed King Stegor with her own blade. Stegor's brother, Orrek, sent Prince Kamuu alone on a scouting mission into the ruins, with the secret intent that the prince would be killed so that he could himself attain the throne of the tribe.[3]

Kamuu traveled through the ruins of the once-great city until he was sucked downward when the thin volcanic crust on which he had stepped gave way beneath him. When he regained consciousness, Kamuu found himself in the sanctuary of Shabarr, the living skeleton of a priest of Bishru, who attacked the boy. Kamuu tried to resist but his sword was damaged by the creature and he had to swim away. When Kamuu fled into the ancient throne room, he found a mystical sword that had once been wielded by Kamuu, the Emperor of Pre-Cataclysmic Atlantis.[4]

When Kamuu drew the sword and waved it through the water, it gave off many-colored stars from its tip. Seeing this, Shabarr knelt before the boy and addressed him as "Master Kamuu," apparently mistaking him for the king he had once served. The prince then fell unconscious and in his dreams he found himself in another place where he met the ancient King Kamuu and his wife Queen Zartra. They showed him his destiny as the future ruler of Atlantis and of his heritage with the city. Kamuu then awoke and realized that he had never left the throne room.[5]

After leaving the palace, Kamuu spoke aloud to himself about how it was time his people abandoned their nomadic ways and that Atlantis was where that would happen. As he stood on a ridge overlooking the ruins and swore to retake them, Kamuu was approached by Princess Zartra, the daughter of Tanas and Elanna, who came with her sword sheathed. Zartra revealed that her mother was a seeress who knew of his destiny and so had sent Zartra to him to make peace. The two agreed to throw down their swords in friendship[5] which led to marriage and the union of the two tribes.

After they died, they were succeeded by Kamuu's son,[6] Prince Harran.[2] His spirit was said

Notes

  • According to the Tales of Atlantis story in Sub-Mariner (Vol. 2) #64 in which this Kamuu first appeared, the war between the two nomadic tribes took place in the sunken ruins of Atlantis which had been a city of ghosts on the ocean's floor for the 5,000 years that had passed since the Great Cataclysm. This would place the founding of undersea Atlantis at c. 13000 B.C. However, other stories and various Official Handbook entries give different dates.
  • When young Kamuu met the spirit of the long-dead Kamuu, he was surprised to see that the phantom man looked like him.
  • According to Prince Namor's brief retelling of the history of undersea Atlantis in Saga of the Sub-Mariner #1, the undersea city was built "some eighty centuries ago" by Homo mermani whose youthful ruler only "took unto himself the name of Kamuu" after being visited in a dream by the Kamuu who was the last king of the surface empire. However, this is inaccurate because that Tales of Atlantis storyline makes it clear that Stegor's son's name was always Kamuu. In fact, during their dream-like encounter in Sub-Mariner (Vol. 2) #66, the phantom man addressed the young Kamuu as "You who bear my name."
  • The name of Kamuu's son who succeeded him as king and was later killed in the third decade after Kamuu's death[6] was not revealed to be "Harran" until the profile for Atlantis in All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #1.
  • Although this character was once referenced as being King Kamuu the First, no other Atlantean kings named Kamuu have yet been mentioned.
  • The Atlantean king Kam'u, introduced in Namor: The First Mutant, may be a reference to Kamuu, or an alternate name with an erroneous description (Kam'u's feats occurring 1000 years after the current consensus date at 6000 BC).
