The Master Weaver was the Protector of the Web of Life and Destiny located on Earth-001, the nexus of the Multiverse.[3] He is a time paradox version of Karn of Inheritors,[4] totemic avatars of the Leech and the lowest of all Totems in the Multiverse.[5]

History

Karn (Temporal Paradox) (Earth-001) from Superior Spider-Man Vol 1 33 002

Only able to parasite the powers of others,[5] the Inheritors who fed on the life forces of other totemic avatars sought to gain control over the Web of Life and Destiny and attacked the Master Weaver on Earth-001. Young Karn had a chance to strike him down, but the Master Weaver revealed that Karn found no pleasure in death and wished he could create and not destroy. Karn hesitated, so his mother attacked the Master Weaver, who killed her by snapping a thread of the Great Web of Life and Destiny. Karn's father Solus subjugated the Master Weaver with his siblings, while Karn himself was cast out in shame. Seeking to use the power of the Master Weaver, they Inheritors used chains designed by Jennix to enslave him, using his power to travel between different realities and hunt and kill all Spider-Totems in the Multiverse one by one.[6]

After the revelation of The Bride, the Inheritor patriarch Solus sensed and declared a Great Hunt that would spell the end of all Spiders, everywhere. The Inheritors needed the Bride, The Other and The Scion to perform a ritual that would sever the connection of all Spiders to the Web of Life forever. The Inheritors would have the Master Weaver transport them to different realities where they would hunt down the local Spider-Totems and feed on their life force energies.[6] A Spider-Army from different realities was assembled to oppose the Inheritors, and the Master Weaver secretly manipulated events across the Multiverse, acts he considered "small rebellions" to bring an end to the Inheritors' reign. One of these events culminated in Spider-Woman of Earth-616 masquerading as her counterpart of Earth-001 to infiltrate the Loomworld. The Master Weaver passed her two scrolls, the first explaining the details of the ritual to put an end to all Spider-Totems; the second detailing the motivations of Karn and how to stop the Inheritors. Spider-Woman, with her dimension-jumping device damaged, attempted to use the Inheritors' portals, but Master Weaver stopped her, knowing that it would tip off the Inheritors. Spider-Woman managed to send the scrolls to the Spider-Army on Earth-3145, though stranding herself on Loomworld.[7]

The Spider-Army was able to recruit young Karn to fight against his own family that shunned him by coming up ith a method for Karn to survive without killing and fulfill his lifelong desire of traveling the Multiverse, recording the beauty of the different dimensions.[8] The Spider-Army converged on the Loomworld and was able to disrupt the ritual, but in order to prevent the prophecy of the Inheritors from ever coming to fruition the Superior Spider-Man also murdered the Master Weaver by slitting his throat. The Inheritors were banished to the irradiated Earth-3145 with no way back,[4] and as the body of the Master Weaver was unmasked, Karn recognized him as his older self and volunteered to take his place as the Master Weaver until death to rebuild the torn threads of the Web of Life and to atone for his past crimes.[1]

Notes

Master Weaver unmasked as Karn

Master Weaver unmasked as Karn

  • The ending of the Spider-Verse portrayed the Master Weaver as Karn's future self, implying that Karn would have been in a Time-Loop and was destined to eventually meet his end as shown in Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #14. However, Karn was subsequently killed at the start of Spider-Geddon, thus making the previous Master Weaver a divergent version of him.
  • In Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #527, a being called the Great Weaver was introduced as the totemic spider god spinning the Web of Life. Whether the Master Weaver and Great Weaver are the same entity is as-of-yet unknown, as other attributes and feats associated with the Great Weaver have been attributed to The Other.

Trivia

  • According to totemic script on the Inheritors' sacrificial knife, any person with spider powers can become the Master Weaver, but the only way for the Master Weaver to escape their duty is through death. Silk nearly accepted the responsibility, but Karn stopped her after realizing the previous Master Weaver was his future self.[1]
