Kate Cooke was in Jared's class at Bethlehem High School, and was his only friend there. Jared had a crush on her, and was unable to understand why Kate was so nice to him.
At some point, she began dating Nelson, one of Jared's bullies. Jared witnessed their relationship and tried to end the relationship by asking Nelson's friend, Duncan Sebast, to help him break it off.
As Duncan just beat him up, Jared came back to school with a gun stolen from his father, and fired on Duncan who evaded the bullets using his mutant powers. Kate, who was behind with Nelson, was shot by a bullet to the chest, and died.
