The Republic of Kiribati was an island state in Oceania in the Pacific Ocean consisting of a group of islands in the Oceanic sub-region of Micronesia. Its main island and capital were Tarawa.

History
Tarawa was the site of a bloody battle during World War II between the forces of the Japanese Empire, of which Tarawa was one of their strongholds, and the raiding forces of the U.S. Marines.[1]
