The Kothian Escarpment was a bizarre sheer rock wall of unknown origin, bordering Eastern Koth from the Turanian Desert.[4]
- In the westwards extension of the Kothian Escarpment, the Kothian Uplands formed the border between Koth and Shem.
- The Kothian Hills "[fell] away sheerly" in the east. The Kothian Escarpment was set at the edge of the Eastern Desert.
The Escarpment extended along southeastern Khoraja and southern Koth for about 1000 miles.
The Kothian Escarpment was pierced only by a few passes:[2]
- Shamla Pass - access to the eastern caravan route to Khoraja.[2][3] It was sometimes described as the only known pass through the Escarpment.[4]
- An unnamed pass was set at Khauran, north of Khoraja.
- Another pass was presumed to exist near Eruk in Shem,[2] presumed to join with the important road going south out of Khorshemish, Koth.[1]
- Another pass, originally a stone bridge connecting the Escarpment to to the nearest pillar southwards, lied about twenty leagues north of the Shamla Pass, and was unknown to most. The Zaheemis replaced the broken stone bridge by a rope bridge.[4]
History
The skilled mercenaries of Shem were presumed to have honed their skills during the early clashes between Koth and the Shemite city-states to the South, separated by the Kothian Escarpement.
The Zaheemi clan lived in the southern edge of the Kothian Escarpment and were tasked to guard the eastern caravan route to Khoraja through Shamla Pass.[2]Points of Interest

Notes
- The Kothian Escarpment was described but not specifically named in "Black Colossus" by Robert E. Howard.[2]
- The Kothian Escarpment was originally described as a natural rampart,[2] though it was later described in Conan the Barbarian #210, written by James Owsley and Val Semeiks, and penciled by Semeiks, as a bizarre sheer rock wall of unknown origin and inexplicable presence,[4] seemingly built or heavily modified rather than natural.
