History

After 47 years as the Sorcerer Supreme, Victor von Doom chose to ascend to another place of existence, leaving the mantle in the hands of Kristoff Vernard. Vernard assumed Doom's identity and became a repressive tyrant as the world fell apart around him.

He let Wakanda stand shielded as a sole oasis not subjected to his, perpetuating rumors that it offered refuge. In reality, it had been subjugated along with everything else, and the extremely perilous journey there was considered a test. Doom recruited many promising champions and molded them into his Acolytes, named after the villains of the Heroic Age. He hoarded all of Earth's magic for himself, destroying every mystical artifact to ensure that magic would die with him.

After years of planning, Doom's Acolytes betrayed and stabbed him with an anti-magic Mysterium blade, desiring to have free will and to rule themselves. Wounded, Doom gloated that his magic was all that kept the worst horrors at the bay. After discovering that his vaults were empty, Killmonger finished him by cutting off his head.
