History

Foiled Heists[]

Bombshells (Earth-1610) from Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 2 2 001

Mother / daughter duo

Lana Baumgartner was born with special powers to her mother Lori Baumgartner, a criminal who had been taken out of prison by the nefarious Roxxon Corporation in order to be experimented on to recreate superhero powers. Lori was given the power to create explosions on command, but immediately after being given her powers the Roxxon researchers and Lori herself found that she was pregnant, provoking Lori to blow her way out of the Roxxon facility and escape to have her child, Lana, on her own. [2]

When Lana was thirteen, shortly after the events of Ultimatum in which all of New York City was flooded, Lana (who had inherited the same powers as her mother) and her mother Lori worked together to user their powers to make money committing robbery. (Despite the recent prohibition on mutants and the use of special abilities.) The duo called each of themselves "Bombshell". Their first heist was foiled by Spider-Man and Lana was placed under arrest.[3] A short time later, the Bombshell mother and daughter attempted another heist on an armored truck, this time being foiled by Spider-Woman and The Human Torch.[4]

Second Chance at Midtown High[]

After her mother's arrest, the courts deemed Lana a victim of poor parental influence and Lana's grandmother was awarded custody as Lana's guardian. As a fresh start, Lana was transferred to Midtown High School, the very school Peter Parker (Spider-Man), Kitty Pryde (a mutant), Bobby Drake (Iceman), and Johnny Storm (the Human Torch) were attending.

Lana ignored everyone in school on her first day, until Peter Parker came to introduce himself. Lana was offended because she thought Peter wanted to see if she was easy to put out, but Peter insisted he wanted to extend a hand of friendship. When Lana didn't believe Peter's intentions, she walked off, but not before Peter identified her as one of the villains Bombshell. Lana was surprised that Peter knew this, but Peter explained she gave herself away due to her foul language. Lana begged Peter to not reveal her identity to anyone and Peter agreed after she provided assurance she was not there to blow up the school.

Meeting new allies[]

Young Ultimates (Earth-1610) from Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Vol 1 28 0001

With Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends

Lana was eventually released on parole under the conditions she could not use her powers before she was eighteen.[5] However, a couple of years after being in high school with Peter Parker, Lana was abruptly confronted by a mysterious new super-powered teenage duo calling themselves Cloak and Dagger. The two super-powered teens thought Lana was nefariously connected to the Roxxon Corporation and entered into a fight with Lana, ending with her capture by Cloak. Lana was released from Cloak, presumably after the teens discovered that Lana was not working in any way with Roxxon Corporation.[6]

The new Spider-Man, Miles Morales, and Spider-Woman tracked down Lana the next day to offer her help, but a bounty hunter named Taskmaster arrived seeking to capture all three of them.[2] While the others distracted Taskmaster, Lana had the opportunity to flee but decided to help the heroes instead, and worked with them to overpower Taskmaster. Cloak and Dagger arrived and helped in this effort, and following the fight the group discovered that Roxxon Corporation had been the ones to hire Taskmaster to capture Lana. The five teenagers decided to team up, and together they confronted the head of Roxxon Corporation himself in his headquarters, taking out him and his super-powered scientists/enforcers, the Roxxon Brain Trust. They successful brought them to justice with her expressing her interest in teaming up again.[7]

Young Ultimates[]

All-New Ultimates Vol 1 1 Textless

As a member of the Young Ultimates

Shortly after the Roxxon incident, when the intergalactic being known as Galactus arrived on Earth and destroyed most of New Jersey, Lana watched her ex-boyfriend be killed by a falling car right in front of her. She observed the world-protecting superhero team known as the Ultimates helping people in the chaos of the turmoiled city, and Lana resolved to ignore her parole rules and instead begin using her superpowers for good. She helped rescue people of New York during Galactus' attack on the planet, and following the defeat of Galactus the superhero Tony Stark decided to disband the Ultimates. However, Spider-Woman decided to continue the legacy of the recently deceased Captain America in the form of a team of young heroes, the Young Ultimates, made up of the five friends who had worked together to stop Roxxon, along with the additional teenager named Kitty Pryde who had been crucial in defeating Galactus.[8]

Marvel Universe[]

As a consequence of the reality-ending phenomena known as incursions, Lana's entire universe came to an end.[9] One of the few survivors of the universe was Lana's friend Miles Morales.[10] When he found himself in a world composed of the remnants of destroyed realities called Battleworld, he helped the omnipotent being that was keeping it together, the Molecule Man.[11]

As a repayment to Miles' help, when the Molecule Man's native universe, Earth-616, was brought back from its own destruction by Mister Fantastic, the Molecule Man transported Miles, his family and his friends into it, doing so in such a way it was as if they had always lived their entire life there.[12] Lana, alongside her mother, was one of these people brought to Earth-616.[13]

Spider-Man Vol 2 234 Textless

Coerced to join the Sinister Six

Lana was hospitalized after trying to confront the criminal Hammerhead. Since Miles tried to avenge her and confronted Hammerhead on his own, since she was in love with Miles, Lana interpreted this as an act of love from his part.[14] Not long afterwards, Lana reunited with her mother, who had been freed from custody due to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s dissolution. Their reunion went awry quickly, since Lori intended to continue her life of crime, and reclaim Lana since she was still a minor.[15] After Lori joined the Sinister Six led by Iron Spider, she forced Lana to help them carry out a heist to steal a decommissioned S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.[16] She reluctantly agreed, but tipped Spider-Man off when they were carrying out the heist. Unfortunately, he failed to stop it, and the Sinister Six flew away on the Helicarrier cloaked.[17] Together with the Champions, Spider-Man tracked down the Sinister Six to Latveria, where they planned to sell the Helicarrier. When they intercepted the meeting between the villains and their client,[18] Lana turned against her mother and knocked her out.[19]

Outlawed[]

Following the destruction of Coles Academic High School during the battle between Champions and Roxxon's Asgardian Dragon, the government passed "Kamala's Law" which outlawed individuals under the age of 21 from being a superhero.[20] Bombshell attended a secret meeting between other young heroes who refused to obey the law. There they berated Ms. Marvel for speaking in public in their name, even though she did it on her own. However, the government funded C.R.A.D.L.E. ambushed them, forcing some of the young heroes to flee while others, including Bombshell were apprehended.[21]
