History

Lazarus, like his older sister Domino, is the result of a top-secret government program, Project Armageddon, which focused on breeding mutants in order to develop the perfect living weapon. Lazarus and Domino's mother is a woman known only as "Beatrice" who had been part of the program as a subject. Beatrice, as well as all her children, were experimented upon by the scientists of Project Armageddon.

Several of these children died during the rigorous experimentation; of those who survived, some were not mutants, while others were, but lacked the power set the project sought. Lazarus was the one child that survived and met the criteria, and thus was deemed a success. He was taken from his mother and allowed to develop into childhood in confinement. For the duration of his life there he wasn't allowed to be around people other than select Project Armageddon staff.

Eventually, Lazarus's mother Beatrice came to believe that his mutant abilities made him a threat that could not be allowed to live, and she began a search for him with the intention of killing him. Concurrently, Domino was on her own quest to investigate the mysteries of her origins and unexpectedly discovered the five-year-old Lazarus being held in isolation in the Armageddon Project facility she had infiltrated looking for answers.

Domino decided to liberate her brother from captivity, and the two were in the process of escaping when they were halted by Beatrice. After learning of their mother's murderous plans, Domino attempted to defend her brother and continue their escape. Seeing hate, violence, and pain erupt around him, Lazarus used his enhanced empathic and telepathic abilities to ensure his and Domino's survival. In the process, it became apparent that his powers have no effect on his mother and sister. Beatrice would not yield in her goal of killing Lazarus, and ultimately Domino was forced to shoot her mother to save her younger brother.

After escaping the base, Domino took her brother to be cared for by the same church in Chicago in which she was raised, believing that he could live there safely and inconspicuously, just as she had as a child. However, it was soon revealed that Beatrice had survived her injuries and had located Lazarus, arriving with a blade in the dead of night to whisk the boy away to an unknown fate.

During an encounter between Domino and Topaz years later, the latter mentioned Lazarus in a way that implied he might be alive; Topaz threatened to harm him as a way of inflicting psychological terrorism on Domino during their skirmish. No further information about Domino's long-lost brother was given, though, and Topaz perished during a subsequent showdown. Lazarus's current status remains a mystery.

• Mind Manipulation: Lazarus has the ability to sense emotions as well as manipulate minds to influence decisions. His mind control creates a blissful effect on the afflicted, causing them to commit suicide out of despair and withdrawal once the control is removed.
