History
Lieutenant Colonel Leon Townsend was a US Army veteran who survived an attack while serving overseas that left him paraplegic and his unit dead. While mourning his deceased squadmates, Townsend watched a news report showing the Destroyers attacking the Pentagon and immediately recognized them as his old unit. Townsend confronted Dr. Spivey at gunpoint at the Pentangle and demanded that she turn him into a Destroyer, believing that only he could convince his former soldiers to stop their rampage. Despite Townsend still being alive, General Harms agreed with his request, as he needed the Destroyers back in control to prevent Project Hellfire from being shut down. After Townsend was converted, he immediately left and tracked down the only surviving Destroyer, Corporal Jamie Doeden, and helped him regain his sanity. Townsend and Doeden helped Hellverine and Wolverine kill Harms when he attempted to summon a demonic invasion within the US Government. Afterwards, Hellverine decided to leave Project Hellfire under the control of Spivey and the Destroyers, to which Townsend readily agreed.
Townsend was later restored to his human form but retained his ability to walk again. When the disembodied parts of the Hell Hulk emerged on Earth and was causing those within range to fall into uncontrollable rages and murder, Townsend and Doeden were sent with Hellverine to locate and extract the demon's body parts to protect the populace from its corruption. After the Hell Hulk was reassembled, the new chief analyst Severith betrayed Project Hellfire and awakened the Hell Hulk. Townsend was severely injured in the ensuing rampage but was able to recover.[2] Townsend and Project Hellfire later helped Hellverine stop Severith and the Hell Hulk from summoning a demonic takeover at the Devil's Backbone.[3]Attributes
