History
Leonard is a friend and psychotherapist of Dr. Bruce Banner. He was romantically involved with Betty Ross while Banner was a fugitive.
Leonard was in a meeting with Betty when Bruce returned to Culver University for the first time since the accident that turned him into the Hulk. Leonard revealed Banner's location to General Ross because he feared that the Hulk could hurt her. In spite of his jealousy, he later realized that Betty had to help Bruce and that it had been a mistake to work with General Ross.[2]Notes
- Leonard is portrayed by Ty Burrell in The Incredible Hulk. Shortly after the film's release, Burrell expressed interest in reprising his role in a potential sequel where he would be given a bigger part in the film's story.[3]
- This character could be considered an adaptation of Leonard Samson, a psychotherapist and a love interest to Betty Ross in the Hulk's mythos in the comics. However, one of the writers of the Guidebook to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stuart Vandal, has stated that the writing team was specifically told by Marvel that The Incredible Hulk's Leonard was not Leonard Samson. Vandal presumes that Burrell's Leonard did originate as an adaptation of Samson, but a change of plans resulted in the character being dropped, so Marvel Studios might have decided to keep their options open to properly introduce Leonard Samson down the line.[4]
