Quote1 The Assembly might be a lie. But Liberty? That's still me. Quote2
Liberty[src]

History

The girl known as Liberty was taken from her family at a young age to be part of Hydra's new recruitment program conceived by Gremlin, where they would brainwash kids to forget their families and morals to do their bidding. A select few would be specially-trained and be made to believe they were heroes, while secretly helping advance Hydra's plans.[2] In Liberty's case, she had cybernetic wings with hard-light technology attached to her back.[3]

These heroes formed the Assembly and every member had a fake story on how they gained powers released to the public. In Liberty's case, it was said she was a tech-genius since her preteen years and had made significant advancements in adaptive hard-light technology.[1]

The Assembly

One time, the Assembly intervened in a fight between Spider-Woman and Zzzax, and, upon joining efforts with Spider-Woman, they were able to stop and arrest the electrical monster.[4] Shortly afterwards they met Spider-Woman a second time, when she was trying to de-escalate a situation with Angar the Screamer. The moment the Assembly showed up, Angar lost faith in Spider-Woman and fighting ensued. Amidst the confusion, Angar's scream made Liberty remember the suppressed memories of her torture at the hands of Hydra, and collapsed on the floor, crying. When Angar was contained, the Assembly returned to base with Liberty, but she no longer trusted the team and met with Spider-Woman, asking for help figuring out what was happening.[5]

Together, they traveled to Alcatraz Island to free Angar and get him to snap all the kids from the brainwashing. Just as they unlocked his cell, the remaining members of the Assembly arrived, and Angar screamed against the team, causing all but Titan (secretly Gremlin) to start having visions of the torture as well.[3] Convinced Spider-Woman was trying to help them and that Titan was one of the bad guys, the Assembly helped Spider-Woman defeat Titan and the other prisoners in Alcatraz, managing to escape before the whole place exploded. The kids decided to remain together and Spider-Woman gave each of them a phone with a direct line to Nick Fury, in case they ever needed new identities or help tracking down their parents.[2]

Notes

  • Liberty was designed by Lucas Werneck as part of the New Champions Variant Covers celebrating Spider-Boy by imagining the forgotten sidekicks of other Marvel heroes.[6]
  • Liberty appears to have a Brazilian background, as suggested in Spider-Woman (Vol. 8) #8, when she regains her memories of the torture she was subjected to and starts calling for her mother using an expression typical of Brazilian Portuguese.
