The Legion of Living Lightning was a clandestine organisation composed of rogue scientists and paramilitary soldiers who sought to destabilise and overthrow world governments through the use of advanced energy-based technology. Armed with powerful electrical weaponry of their own invention, the group aimed to impose a new world order under their control. The Legion operated under the leadership of Lightning Lord, a brilliant but megalomaniacal figure who believed that only through domination by superior intellect and power could humanity achieve lasting peace.[1]
History
Origin[]
The organization was founded by a group of rogue scientists and ex-soldiers who believed world governments were failing humanity. Led by the radical Lightning Lord, they developed powerful electrical weapons and planned to seize global control through force. Operating from a hidden base in the American Southwest[1]
Battling the Hulk[]
While leaping through the American Southwest, the Hulk inadvertently collided with a flying craft belonging to the Legion of the Living Lightning. The impact caused the ship to crash, but the Hulk rescued the pilot, who persuaded him to accompany him to the Legion’s mountain base. The pilot lost consciousness due to the strain of the Hulk’s leap, but the mountain doors opened regardless, revealing the Lightning Machine. Unaware of the Legion's true intentions, the Hulk was suddenly attacked by bolts of artificial lightning from their generator. Despite his immense strength, the Hulk was eventually subdued. After the pilot recovered, he explained to the Legion's Lightning Lord that the Hulk had saved him, prompting the Lord to release the Hulk from the electrical restraint. Appealing to the Hulk's longing for acceptance, the Lightning Lord calmed him and persuaded him to join the Legion. Soon, the Hulk was helping the Legion with heavy construction work. Meanwhile, Colonel Glenn Talbot discovered the Legion's hidden base, but he was captured and brought before the Lightning Lord. Talbot’s aggressive attitude convinced the Hulk that the Legion was in the right, and the Lightning Lord ordered the Hulk to destroy a nearby U.S. Army missile base.[1]
The Hulk attacked the base, which was under the command of General Thaddeus Ross. The Lightning Lord and his forces followed the Hulk in their aircraft. Using advanced lightning weaponry, they overcame the distracted soldiers already engaged with the Hulk. Eventually, the Hulk was subdued by a gas attack. By that point, the Legion had seized control of the base and disabled its communication systems. The Lightning Lord imprisoned Betty Ross with the Hulk and then threatened to harm her unless General Ross surrendered in a nation-wide broadcast.[2] Attempting to ensure the Hulk's obedience, the Lightning Lord told him that Betty was an enemy and must be eliminated. Instead, trusting Betty, the Hulk lashed out and hurled the Lightning Lord across the room. In response, the Legion used lightning rays to attack the Hulk repeatedly, causing him to revert to Bruce Banner. During the chaos, Talbot overpowered a distracted guard, stole his uniform, and restored radio communications. Using one of the Legion's weapons, he incapacitated the guards holding Banner and the Rosses. With reinforcements arriving, the Lightning Lord fled the base with a handful of followers, leaving the rest of the Legion behind to be captured. Knowing the Hulk was their best chance of stopping the Legion’s remaining forces, General Ross allowed Banner to use gamma radiation to trigger another transformation. At the Legion’s mountain base, the Lightning Lord activated "Plan M", initiating a missile launch aimed at the military base as a last act of defiance. The Hulk arrived in time, resisted further lightning attacks, and destroyed the Living Lightning generator by hurling a crane into it. The resulting explosion destroyed the Legion's base.[3] Following the destruction of the Legion's base, one of its members, Dr.Lou Denham, either survived the incident or was not present at the time. He may have been among those earlier captured during the missile facility operation.[4]
Living Lightning[]
Years later, Miguel Santos the son of former Legion member Carlos Santos discovered the ruins of the Legion's former headquarters. Using his father's fingerprint glove, Miguel accessed the site and attempted to reactivate the Legion's Living Lightning device. The device electrocuted him, but instead of dying, Miguel was transformed into a being of living electrical energy. He took up the mantle of Living Lightning.[5] Dr. Denham eventually learned of the Living Lightnings emergence and deduced Miguel's identity and connection to his former teammate. Seeing an opportunity, Denham sought out Miguel in an attempt to recreate the process and produce an army of empowered individuals to revive the Legion. Miguel refused to cooperate. In response, Denham sent agents to coerce him, even kidnapping Miguel’s mother as leverage. Miguel fought back, defeated Denham's operatives, and turned the group over to the authorities.[4]
Vs. the Howling Commandos[]
At some point, the group rebranded themselves as the Lords of the Living Lightning.[6] S.H.I.E.L.D. dispatched Daimon Hellstrom to infiltrate the reorganised cult.[7] The Lords later became involved in an operation where they provided advanced technology to another cult. The supernatural division of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Howling Commandos, intervened.[6] When the sorcerer Merlin was released upon the world, the psychic units of both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Lords died from overload. The Lords, attempting to secure their position, sent Hellstrom to Merlin in hopes of negotiating an alliance.[8] However, Merlin's supernatural forces assaulted the Lords' base and subjugated them.[9] Following Merlin's eventual defeat, he retreated to the Lords' facility, where he presumably assumed control.[7]
Ressurrection[]
Later, the Lords resurfaced during a large-scale conflict involving the mercenary Taskmaster. The organisation was among fifteen groups that attempted to collect a billion-dollar bounty placed on Taskmaster's head by the impostor Redshirt, who was masquerading as the Org. Taskmaster killed all attackers during the initial confrontation.[10] Redshirt later rallied his alliance, the Minions' International Liberation Front (MILF), which included lower-ranking members of the Lords.[11] The MILF assaulted a former S.H.I.E.L.D. base where Taskmaster was in hiding, but most of the attackers were either killed or driven off by Taskmaster and his ally Mercedes Merced.[12]See Also
