Lorna Kleinfeldt was the personnel coordinator of the Wild Pack, and in charge of maintaining their operations in North America. She was a loud middle-aged woman and a competent fighter herself even if she looked overweight, as she needed to maintain her authority over teams of mercenaries - in some conditions, she was a match for Paladin.
History
Lorna Kleinfeldt's father had been a Nazi war criminal who did horrible, yet unspecified, things to children. The Wild Pack, an elite team of hunters of Nazi criminals, killed him, but Silver Sable,[2] who at that point had just become the Pack leader,[6] accepted that Kleinfeldt, who was innocent, would work for the Wild Pack. Kleinfeldt spent years ashamed of her heritage.[2]
Kleinfeldt became personnel coordinator for the Wild Pack,[1] which was then reconverting into an elite mercenary force.[3] Kleinfeldt collaborated with Sable's uncle Mortimer ("Morty"), who was also in charge of administrative activities, and remained in Sable's circle of trust, being one of the few people who could tell Sable what she did not want to hear: Kleinfeldt and Morty both opposed Sable's wedding with the handsome mercenary Basil,[6] and time proved them right.[7] Kleinfeldt also got married at some point; but nothing is known about her husband.[1]
When Sable built the Wild Pack into the international mercenary team she needed, and which became a critical component of the economy of her home country, Symkaria, Kleinfeldt was given the added responsibilities of maintaining Wild Pack operations in North America,[3] monitoring operations from the Symkarian Embassy in New York City,[4][1] but she also spent a lot of time in Symkaria, usually at the headquarters of the Wild Pack, Castle Sable.[5][4] Kleinfeldt became familiar with all the employees who worked for the Pack, at least by reading their records.[5] She also knew every detail of the Embassy, including the origin of every item that was there.[2]
Kleinfeldt attended a CTF exercise where a group of recruits faced off against Sable in and around Castle Sable. Sable defeated all the candidates with humiliating ease, and then Kleinfeldt and Morty emerged from the Castle to deliver the verdicts, with Kleinfeldt loudly berating them. Sable however wanted to hire a recruit, Douglas Powell, who had performed better than the others. Kleinfeldt objected, citing Powell's inappropriate behavior and troublesome past, but Sable overstepped Kleinfeldt.[5] At the time, Sable wanted to give people like Powell one last chance at redemption to have legitimate employment and a decent life.[8] Soon after, Sable even organized an elite team under her direct command that included Powell, and had the violent bounty hunter Karl "Crippler" Striklan hired into that group. At the Symkarian Embassy in New York, Morty informed Kleinfeldt and accountant Jonathan Lee of the new hiring; that time it was Lee who opposed the Pack being associated with that kind of person - but Kleinfeldt didn't bother arguing because she knew that Sable had already made up her mind, and she focused on Crippler's virtues, such as his resources and his perseverance. Sable joined them soon after, accompanied by her client Reverend Donald Smithfield, whom she was to protect; upon arriving at the Embassy, Sable placed Smithfield in Kleinfeldt's hands. Kleinfeldt and Morty arranged a series of details to prepare Smithfield so that he would be protected when he gave his speech in Madison Square Garden, and they were with him until he came on stage - except that Sable arranged it so that an impersonator, his superhuman agent Sandman, would appear on the scene posing as Smithfield.[1]
After the Smithfield operation, Sable explained that some members of her personal team would be replaced if they failed to adapt. Kleinfeldt expressed her desire for Powell and the Crippler to leave the team (although she did not suggest kicking them out), but Sable especially wanted to keep them around to help them. Understanding that Sable had made up her mind again, Kleinfeldt decided not to argue.[9]
Sable had hired the mercenary Paladin to find the fugitive Dmitri Petrovich, former agent of Hydra. Paladin found him in South America and he returned to New York City to report at the Embassy; he walked in uninvited and, in a display of arrogance, smoked and put his feet up on a desk, convinced that his results were going to be very much to Sable's liking. As Sable was on a mission in Grand Canyon, Kleinfeldt found Paladin and jumped on him, strangling him for his insulting behavior. Paladin made her aware of his own super strength and was surprised that she was not intimidated. At Kleinfeldt's request, Paladin informed her of what he had discovered, including the fact that Petrovich had associated with Nazi war criminals. Kleinfeldt, distracted by remembering her father's past, opened up to Paladin and told him her origins.[2] In a more friendly relationship, Kleinfeldt trained with Paladin in the Embassy gym, and she had the advantage. They were interrupted by the accountant, Mr. Lee, who came to complain about an increase in expenses due to some damage caused by the Pack in Castle Doom, Latveria, and the fact that Paladin's mission in South America offered them no benefit. Lee threatened to cut wages, and Kleinfeldt threatened Lee, physically, with cutting his pay and possibly physically harming him unless Lee fixed the accounting books.[10]
After a mission in which Sable discovered that her father Ernst Sablinova, whom she believed dead years ago, was possibly alive and a prisoner of the criminal group Genesis Coalition,[11] Sable was so upset that she lost control of herself in training at the Castle Sable gym, and brutally beat up her ally Amy Chen, resisting even when other members of the Pack tried to stop her, and with Kleinfeldt as witness. Realizing her mistake, Sable apologized; Kleinfeldt and the others, who appreciated her, excused her, although Sable did not appreciate their gesture.[12]
Kleinfeldt began a torrid and furtive romance with the Crippler, having relations in the privacy of Kleinfeldt's office at the Symkarian Embassy; rebellious and irregular, the Crippler didn't even explain his own absences. Simultaneously, the Wild Pack withdrew their Delta Team from an ambassador murder case after losing two Delta Team members. The surviving Deltas, led by Henson, demanded explanations, and Morty simply directed them to Kleinfeldt. When the Delta team opened Kleinfeldt's door uninvited, they found her half-naked in the arms of an equally baring Crippler. Crippler expelled them from the office, throwing his Cobrabation at them, while Kleinfeldt insisted that the Deltas be discreet about this matter.[13]
Kleinfeldt and Morty then hired Sam Powell,[6] sister of Doug Powell,[14] as Public Relations for the Wild Pack, and took her to meet the mercenaries at the Embassy.[6]
The Wild Pack failed in two successive operations to capture the Human Torch and Venom, ridiculing their company. Sable scolded them as Kleinfeldt and Morty looked on.[15]
When Mr. Lee embezzled a sizeable amount of money from Silver Sable International, Sable hired Paladin to find the money. At the embassy, Paladin worked with a technician to find out details of what happened to the computers. Kleinfeldt interrupted them, explaining that Paladin had been hired to physically track Lee in the field; she had people who could search the money more efficiently than Paladin. Paladin attempted to negotiate his own salary, but Kleinfeldt was much less impressed by Paladin than Paladin himself. Morty then warned them of a possibly supernatural fog covering the city and, after Kleinfeldt and Paladin saw him on the terrace, Morty proposed that they go to the bomb shelters. On the way they saw that a visitor had entered: Lightbright, a superhuman from Somalia whom Battlestar had invited to join the Wild Pack. When Paladin tried to impress her, Lightbright told him that she reminded him due to his arrogant attitude in Somalia; and Kleinfeldt immediately warmed to Lightbright, so she introduced herself in a friendly way.[16]
After the fog cleared,[16] most of the Wild Pack left the embassy for a night out, but Kleinfeldt, Morty, and Sam Powell stayed, along with some of the staff. The thief Black Fox wanted to rob the embassy, so he used a sleeping gas on the ventilation ducts that left Kleinfeldt and the others asleep for an hour.[17]
The American government arrested Sable and sent her to prison. Morty gathered the Wild Pack and their associates (including Kleinfeldt) at the Embassy to inform them of what had happened. Because the authorities were putting pressure on the Pack's allies, Sable ordered the Pack to be taken to Symkaria, lest they could be arrested next; the Pack, however, decided to stay and try to help her. Finally, it was Morty who got Sable exonerated.[18]
Later, Sable took some medical tests and thought she was pregnant; her allies discovered it. Sable decided not to abort immediately.[19] Ernst Sablinova, recently rescued from the Coalition,[20] believed that Sable was making a mistake because she couldn't be a mother with her lifestyle; but Kleinfeldt argued that Sablinova did not know what a woman needed. Immediately afterwards, Sable, who had just discovered that she had not been pregnant, gathered the entire team to tell them that she was retiring from active participation in missions to focus exclusively on administrative tasks.[21] However, when Bogart Jeffries of the Central Intelligence Agency went to Symkaria to try to convince Sable to actively participate in a mission, Kleinfeldt agreed to take Jeffries to see Sable. Jeffries was unable to change Sable's mind,[22] but she eventually resumed her activities as a field leader.[19]
Eventually, Sable decided to dissolve the Wild Pack. It was reformed by Andreas Vadas, who was defeated soon afterward,[3] but the Wild Pack continued operating in Symkaria[23] as an organization with access to sizeable resources,[24] and counting with some of the previous Pack members such as Chen among its members.[23] Sable became a solo mercenary, occasionally working only with a few of her former associates like her relative Anna Sablinova.[25] Kleinfeldt has not been seen since, and her later activities are unknown.Personality
Lorna Kleinfeldt was personnel coordinator for the Wild Pack[1] managing the group's American operations[3] and working with the mercenaries, whom she knew how to keep in line.[5] She was a woman who was not easily intimidated,[2][10] and managed to instead intimidate armed and very aggressive people.[5]
Kleinfeldt was also personal aide to Silver Sable,[4] and she held Sable in high regard. Kleinfeldt knew the kind of woman Sable was, and she did not argue with her when Sable had made a decision, even if Kleinfeldt disagreed.[5][1][9] She also tried to offer Sable support and confidence,[12] and she was one of the few people who offered her a feminine perspective on her problems, understanding e.g. that Sable did not want to have an abortion.[21]
Kleinfeldt repeatedly expressed her distaste for some of the people Sable had hired, such as Doug Powell,[9] whom she described as a "Schweinhund" (pig-dog),[5] but agreed to let Sable keep him on the payroll. Kleinfeldt also did not feel comfortable with the brutal Crippler,[9] although she later began a carnal and secret relationship with him.[9] As for the showoff Paladin, Kleinfeldt criticized his reckless attitude as disrespectful, and was even willing to fight him;[2] she proved to be a match for Paladin in combat[10] and she immediately sympathized with Lightbright, who also did not appreciate Paladin.[16] Kleinfeldt's aggressive attitude was not limited to mercenaries: She also lifted the accountant Mr. Lee from the ground when he threatened to do some cuts.[10] As for Sable's father, Ernst Sablinova, Kleinfeldt could address him by his first name, which was unusual due to the authority he commanded.[21]Attributes
Abilities
Lorna Kleinfeldt was good both as a personnel coordinator[1] and monitoring mercenary operations.[4][3] She also knew how to give massages.[5]
Kleinfeldt was surprisingly strong for her age[2] and was trained in unarmed personal combat, being a match for the Paladin.[10]Trivia
- Kleinfeldt had a strong mid-European accent that seemed to be German ("Zat vass disgraceful!"), plus she used German honorifics ("Fraulein Sable") and occasional German words ("He ees Schweinhund!").[5] Besides, her father had been a Nazi war criminal.[2] However, it is unclear whether Kleinfeldt herself was really from Germany or not: Some Nazis were from other countries (e.g. Arnim Zola was Swiss), and Kleinfeldt may have had her accent after spending too much time in Germany or interacting too much with Germans. As she was addressed "Frau Kleinfeldt" (a German surname), maybe only her husband, but not her, was German.[1] When she worked closely with Silver Sable, she was either a born or a nationalized Symkarian.[4]
- Kleinfeldt referred to Silver Sable as "Fraulein Sable" (should have been written "Fräulein Sable").[1] The word "Fräulein" is currently condescending except when referring to little girls and would not be acceptable to refer to Silver Sable, an adult woman.
