History
Louis the German was the grandson of Charlemagne and half-brother to Lothair I[1] and Charles the Bald.[2]
At the death of Charlemagne, his Empire was split between three of his grandsons in 843 AD, Charles was granted West Francia (who formed the foundation of France,[2][1] and included the northwest of modern Belgium), while Middle Francia (who encompass most of what would become Belgium) went to Lothair[1] and East Francia to Louis.[3]See Also
