History
After Madame Masque had stolen the Ruby Egress, an ancient gem with magical properties, she handed it over to her father Count Nefaria[1] in order to gauge its potential against the upcoming Fear Eaters invasion.[2] Nefaria used it to attack the Avengers Tower and trapped the three most powerful members of the team - Captain Marvel, Thor and Doctor Strange - inside, confident that the others would not pose a threat.[3]
Nefaria then stole the Whetstone, another artifact that could house the Ruby.[4] With both artifacts combined, he gained the ability to summon those trapped inside it back into the world, upon which then became his slaves, obeying his every thought. Strange prevented Thor and Captain Marvel from going though the portal in the first wave, but warned they will would inevitably erode over time.[3] Nefaria send his new thralls against the Avengers, who were nearly overwhelmed, but the Ruby's effect grew on him and he began to lose control. From inside the Ruby, Captain Marvel and Thor combined their powers to hit a specific point in the Ruby's shell, which caused Nefaria to drop it. Sensing the narrow window in which the Ruby had no master, Doctor Strange got himself, Thor and Captain Marvel out, after which it has picked up by Black Panther who ordered the monsters back inside and separated the Ruby from the Whetstone afterwards.[5]See Also
