Lucinda Guthrie was the matriarch of the Guthrie family.
History
As a young woman, Lucinda attended the big county fair, where she met Thomas Guthrie for the first time. He was throwing a rubber ball at milk jugs. Lucinda was enchanted and the pair spent the rest of the day together. After the fair, Thomas visited every local farm until he found Lucinda again.[8] The pair eventually married and together they had ten biological children they raised on their family farm in Cumberland County, Kentucky.[1][9][10]
When Sam, Professor X, and the Mutants came to Cumberland County for a visit, Lucinda prepared a dinner for everyone and insisted they all stay with the family instead of going to a hotel.[1]
During a visit while on tour with Lila Cheney, Sam visited home and considered moving back to Cumberland County to care for his family. However, Lucinda encouraged him to live his own life while she continues to care for the family as long as she is able.[5]
Although Lucinda tried to hide Sam's letters and his status as a mutant from his siblings,[1] Paige found the letters and tried to jump start her powers manifesting. When Lucinda found out, she told Paige to be patient and somethings can't be rushed.[11] When Paige's mutant powers first manifest, Lucinda was supportive, but cautious. Alone with Cable, Lucinda shared her fear of losing Paige the same way Sam was "drafted".[12] When the Upstarts unexpectedly attacked, Lucinda unsuccessfully tried to stop Paige from teleporting away with X-Force.[13]
During an attack by the Phalanx, Lucinda was nearly assimilated. However, the Phalanx successfully identified Paige as a mutant, it abducted her instead and left their home destroyed.[3]
When Lucinda noticed she was having difficulty holding on to items, she went to her doctor who diagnosed her with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurodegenerative disease. Planning to move in with her cousin Bonnie in Lexington for treatment and assistance with childcare, Lucinda invited Sam home to give him the news.[4]
After Josh revealed his wings to half the town, Lucinda brought him to the newly expanded Xavier Institute.[14] When he was later killed by the Purifiers, Lucinda returned to the Institute to say goodbye.[15]
Searching for a way to undo M-Day, Beast and Dark Beast came to the Guthrie Farm to study Lucinda's genes. Grief-stricken, Lucinda refused to help because she didn't want to lose any more of her children to the mutant cause. However, Dark Beast took it upon himself to begin experimenting on Lewis, nearly killing him.[9][16]
During a visit before the Hellfire Gala, Lucinda watched Josiah while Sam rescued stranded civilians across Cumberland County during an intense storm.[17]Paraphernalia
