History

Lyonesse is a hidden civilization that exists within caverns far below the island of Manhattan.[1] Due to its location, it is considered to be part of Subterranea, the many networks of underground caves and tunnels that exist miles beneath the surface of Earth.[2]

The kingdom of Lyonesse was (probably) founded by Lord Tantalus, a Deviant conqueror from the planet Armechadon who came to Earth twenty-five millennia ago to unite the Deviant factions of Earth and conquer the planet.[3] However, it hasn't been revealed if Tantalus actually founded Lyonesse or if it was a kingdom that existed before being conquered by him. It also hasn't been revealed when during the 25,000-year period that he spent on Earth that Tantalus founded (or conquered) the kingdom.

Although some of the Peacekeepers who served Tantalus were extremely long-lived Deviants who had accompanied him from Armechadon, younger members were chosen from among the citizens of Lyonesse.

Modern Age[]

Although Tantalus greatly desired to return to Armechadon, the throneworld of his small interstellar empire, he remained on Earth because the only method by which he could have returned would have required him to be away from Earth for at least nine years and his plans for the planet would not allow him to be gone that long. However, when a recently-rescued Skrull revealed the existence of a stargate near Earth's Sun, Tantalus took advantage of it, and he, four of his Peacekeepers and the Skrull pilot left Earth in the starship Vimana.[4]

The absence of Tantalus very quickly led to a power-struggle among the Earth-born Deviants in Lyonesse. Only days later, while on Armechadon, Tantalus was shown an image of the carnage and destruction that were occurring throughout Lyonesse as a result of that power-struggle. Tantalus demanded to be returned to Earth immediately but was refused[5] and was soon afterwards killed by his son, Lucian (a.k.a. Blackwulf).[6]

Lyonesse is currently being ruled by Khult.[7]

Notes

  • Although all of the residents of Lyonesse were Deviants and at least five of them were known to have been born on Armechadon, it has never been confirmed that all of them were Deviants of Armechadon. While the original settlers may (or may not) have all been from Armechadon, the existence of at least two half-human hybrids indicates that more recent generations have bred outside of that group. Given that Tantalus had planned to unite the Deviant factions of Earth, it's likely that some Earth-born Deviants from other communities, such as Deviant Lemuria, have emigrated to Lyonesse to join his kingdom. Since any such immigrants would presumably have interbred with pure Armechadon Deviants to produce offspring, it's possible that all of the Deviants of Lyonesse are at least partially descended from Armechadonian ancestors but only some are pure-blooded Armechadon Deviants.
  • Although the short-lived "New Lemuria"[7] that briefly served as the relocated capital of the Lemurian Deviants also existed beneath New York City, it had no connection with Lyonesse and was destroyed after its location had been discovered by the Asgardian Thor.[8] Since that stronghold was not too far from a New York City Subway tunnel, it was presumably much closer to the surface than Lyonesse.
