When she was born, they called her M'Kraan. But that came first, and first comes later.

Narrator[source]

Named after the magic crystal of the same name, M'Kraan was created by future versions of Billy and Tommy Maximoff. At some point, she became known as the Angel of History, Queen of the Interregnum, and Echo of lost M'kraan, as she perceives a chain of events hurtling toward one single catastrophe.[2][3]

History

M'Kraan (Earth-616) from Marvel's Voices Infinity Comic Vol 1 6 001

Origin[]

A sentient fragment of the M'kraan Crystal with unclear origin, it had the power to travel in space and time and rewrite reality, so its existence wasn't linear, full of time loops and paradoxes.[8][9][2][3]

Paradox Lost[]

At some point Kristoff Vernard got his hands on this fragment and used its powers to defeat the League of Free Realities, the Council of Kangs and conquer the Limbo. His main opponent was Iron Lad. During their final battle Iron Lad managed to grab the fragment and sent it into the past to his friends the Young Avengers.[8]

Fragment arrived in the 21st century and encountered Antalya the Sun-Clothed who was on the run with newborn Dorrek VIII, trying to protect him from the Skrull Empire and deliver him to the Earth. Fragment opened a portal for them and they arrived in the future several years later, where they encountered an already adult Dorrek VIII who had now became an Emperor Hulkling of the Kree/Skrull Alliance. Antalya and Hulkling had a short heartfelt reunion, while his husband Wiccan took care about newborn Dorrek and the M'kraan fragment. He heard the fragment talking to him, calling him "Demiurge". Fragment then opened a new portal that lead directly to Earth, but 20 years in the past and Antalya and newborn Dorrek went there. They were accompanied by Acanti who were freed by the fragment from the Brood's control and sang whale songs in celebration.[8][10]

People heard the Acanti singing in the sky and saw the fragment falling to Earth. It was believed to be a meteorite and was named Parallax Stone. For the next 20 years it was sold and resold through many private collections all over the world. Eventually it ended up in Venice. The Stone was stolen from auction by the Temple of the Shifting Sun, worshipers of the Demiurge who believed that the Stone was his relic. They then contacted various Italian celebrities and for the price of their entire fortunes allowed these people to touch the Stone and it sent them through time and space to places where they wanted to be. Hawkeye tracked down the Temple and confronted their leader, her mother Eleanor Bishop. After the battle, Hawkeye was reluctunant to kill her mother and allowed her to leave by touching the Stone. Kate then wondered that to do with the Stone, but it teleported away on its own.[6]

Lost and scared, the fragment was unsure where to go, so it went to Speed, wanting to use his power to find its path. It also brought with it "Patriot", but they were intercepted by Master Pandemonium, with whom Tommy was living. Pandemonium defeated "Patriot" and felt the crystal's urge and told it what instead of power, it should look for forgiveness, before teleporting the crystal away.[11]

The shard returned to Iron Lad and brought him into the present, but he was followed by Kristoff Vernard. Kristoff fatally wounded Iron Lad right in front of his younger self and Cassie Lang. Shocked and infuriated, Cassie attacked old Kristoff and while they fought young Kristoff talked with the dying Iron Lad. Iron Lad realized the irony of the moment, as he and the others were always wondering where Kristoff got the M'Kraan fragment, but as it turned out Iron Lad personally brought it to him. Iron Lad told him about the crystal's travel and how it encountered all the Young Avengers and interacted with their history and changed because of it, so Kristoff can change as well and he doesn't have to become his older self. Young Kristoff then used Iron Lad's armor to seemingly destroy the crystal. Without the crystal, the future of old Kristoff and Iron Lad was no longer possible, so Kristoff ceased to exist and disappeared. Iron Lad told Cassie and young Kristoff that the crystal couldn't be really destroyed and it would reappear sooner or later, but anyway he was glad what for once he could die as a hero.[9] Iron Lad was right, the crystal indeed reappeared. Due to her nature and powers, M'Kraan actually managed to pluck Iron Lad from the neverwhere and he then became her loyal servant as young Immortus.[3]

When Wiccan and Hulkling were visiting Mar-Vell's memorial at the asteroid on the orbit around the Titan, they encountered the fragment again. They realized that it was the same crystal they've seen several months ago, but this time it was building something like a school. At this point they had already learned that other Young Avengers had encountered this crystal as well at different moments of their lives. They also realized that apart from the crystal, they had multiple encounters with a mysterious woman with Shi'ar markings on her face. Sometimes she was a waitress, another time a librarian.[7] She was also present during the first kiss of Billy and Teddy, when they told each other about their powers and accepted Iron Lad's proposal to join his team, the Young Avengers.[12][7] More recently in their lives she acted as a cabaret performer, a member of the House of Jumbo Carnation, Krystal M'Kraan.[7] Wiccan met her in the café where he and "Kate Bishop" met for branch during the War of the Realms.[4] Hulkling then encountered Krystal M'Kraan during his meeting with Speed and Prodigy, shortly before he agreed to become an emperor of the Kree/Skrull Alliance.[13] Wiccan and Hulkling realized that this woman was the crystal and it was guiding them towards something.[7]

Avengers Academy[]

Wiccan summoned to the asteroid the Young Avengers and several other heroes, including Carol Danvers, Reed Richards, Professor Xavier, Emma Frost, Shuri, Doctor Voodoo and Spider-Man. They decided to open a new iteration of the Avengers Academy in the building created by the crystal.[7] Lunella Lafayette and Shuri, with the help from Wiccan, Manifold and Nightcrawler, used the crystal to establish the Parallax Configuration in the Academy's cellar. Thanks to it the Academy was able to exist simultaneously in multiple locales and planes of existence.[5]

When all of the teachers were away, the Academy was attacked by Swarm. To stop him from getting control over the Academy, Kid Juggernaut went to the cellar to disconnect the shard from the Parallax Configuration, while the rest of the students remained behind to fight Swarm. When he disconnected the shard, it manifested its conciousness in the form of a woman with the Shi'ar markings on her face. She introduced herself as M'Kraan and confusedly asked "When is this?" which in turn confused Kid Juggernaut. She then told him what both of them were shards, stones, rejected by their builders and proposed to build something new together. She then connected the shard back into the Parallax Configuration and disappeared, promissing to return soon. Jin returned back to the other students and told them he met a weird lady in the basement who might've been a god.[1]

M'Kraan reappeared several months later, when the Academy was infiltrated by Emplate via the Midnight Chapel. He came to kidnap Escapade and despite Brielle Brooks' efforts to save her, Emplate managed to take Shela away. M'Kraan woke Kid Juggernaut so he could help Escapade, but unfortunately it was too late.[14] Jin and Brielle told Captain Marvel that Shela was kidnapped by someone from the Chapel and it was probably related to the lady in the basement. Danvers was completely confused, as she believed that the Academy hadn't had a chapel, and no one other than Jin saw M'Kraan before.[15] During the students' final confrontation with Emplate, M'Kraan folded the space around Escapade, so she could switch powers with all students simultaneously, making her strong enough to defeat Emplate.[16]

Later M'Kraan and young Immortus witnessed arrival of Billy and Tommy Maximoff in the Midnight Chapel. The twins were runing away from Mephisto, and decided to hide from him in the Academy. Immortus was surprised to see them and realized that it was the start of their path to reincarnation as Wiccan and Speed.[16] Mephisto soon arrived at the gates of the Academy, but was stopped by M'Kraan who decided to protect the "demiurgic stowaways". She told Mephisto to leave the twins alone, but he refused, because they belonged to him and he wanted to devour them. Unable to convince him, M'Kraan casted a spell on the Academy and bend reality in a way that forbid Mephisto from ever entering. Even so, the demon easily bypassed this restriction and sent his son Blackheart to capture the twins.[2] The twins were saved from Blackheart by Shela and Brielle, who then brought them back to the Midnight Chapel.[17] M'Kraan greated them as her fathers and offered to take them to their new lives, if they want. The twins agreed, so M'Kraan disconnected the shard from the Parallax Configuration and went with the twins into the past.[3]

At first they arrived only few years or maybe even months in the past, where the twins encountered America Chavez, who protected them from Mephisto. After this short stop, the twins travelled further into the past[18] and were reincarnated as Wiccan and Speed.

The crystal returned back to the Academy on the Christmas Eve. Lunella wondered if it meant the Academy would superposition again and if it meant the two Demiurge kids got home.[19]

After returning, M'Kraan revealed some information about the future to Carol Danvers and about the enemies who were amassing around them. The next few months would be a crucible for the students, but the Academy was still the safest place for them and they needed to prepare, because The Reaper was coming, across the gulf of space and time and then it would arrive, everything would end.[7]

Notes

  • As Krystal M'Kraan she first appeared in War of the Realms: War Scrolls #2, but it apparently wasn't her first meeting with Wiccan and Hulkling, as she asked Billy where his boyfriend was.
