M.O.D.O.K. Superior[src]

History

Birth and Early Activities[]

M.O.D.O.K. Superior began his life as a hidden cloned brain of the original M.O.D.O.K., George Tarleton. In the care of a group of Series-700 LMDs, this brain was transferred into a new M.O.D.O.K. body. Having a different personality and purpose from his predecessor, he dubbed himself M.O.D.O.K. Superior.[3]

George Tarleton (M.O.D.O.K

Original appearance

After obtaining a version of the electric monster Zzzax from smugglers of old S.H.I.E.L.D. tech, M.O.D.O.K. improved the creature's "cognitive matrix" and took it out on a test run to see how much energy and how many minds it could absorb. However, the activation of this Zzzax monster also alerted military General Thaddeus Ross, who had once mentally controlled the creature in an attempt to neutralize the Hulk. M.O.D.O.K. Superior made an offer to reestablish an alliance that Ross had with the original M.O.D.O.K., but was rebuffed and forced to flee when Ross began mind-controlling Zzzax and ordered the creature to attack M.O.D.O.K. Superior.[8]

Fear Itself[]

While reformatting Zzzax to keep Ross from controlling it again, M.O.D.O.K. Superior spied on the Avengers and others from a refurbished base a mile under Manhattan.[9] He also encountered and connected with Zero/One, an artificial being his predecessor was partially responsible for creating thanks to the Scorched Earth program. Their combined forces fought against the Serpent's invasion.[10]

Age of Ultron Averted[]

M.O.D.O.K. Superior and the other members of the reformed supervillain genius group, the Intelligencia, captured Spider-Woman while she was in Wakanda investigating an unidentified object that turned out to be one of the Spaceknights. The Intelligencia took Spider-Woman and the defunct Spaceknight to their base for examination. The Avengers soon arrived on the scene to save Spider-Woman. While M.O.D.O.K. Superior was being subdued by Thor, the Spaceknight reactivated and revealed itself to be Ultron. Ultron tried to escape the base, but was blocked by Hank Pym and ultimately defeated. M.O.D.O.K. Superior and the other members of the Intelligencia were presumably arrested after Ultron's deactivation.[11]

Defection from A.I.M. Empire[]

Later, M.O.D.O.K. Superior and a group of rogue A.I.M. scientists allied with S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to bring down the current leader of A.I.M., Andrew Forson.[12] M.O.D.O.K. promised to provide S.H.I.E.L.D. with information in exchange for amnesty. Maria Hill attempted to obtain all the information M.O.D.O.K. had without helping him, but she was forced to confirm a contract with M.O.D.O.K. which granted him a lab and a team scientists to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. in exchange of one of the most important pieces of information: which S.H.I.E.L.D. officer was a double-agent working for Forson.[13]

After his successful defection, M.O.D.O.K. was forcibly convinced by Doc Green to both apologize for his experiments with gamma radiation (including on Rick Jones) and promise to never research into gamma radiation again.[14]

Secret Avengers[]

Before joining S.H.I.E.L.D., M.O.D.O.K. and his assistant Snapper launched an operation to betray Maria Hill and destroy the organization as soon as they became part of it, under the belief that bullies had to be dealt with, and S.H.I.E.L.D. was "all about [bullies]."[15] M.O.D.O.K. and Snapper sent the android known as The Fury to the mysterious Tlön to see what would come back, and later placed it on the Misericordia, a S.H.I.E.L.D. satellite, to kill agents Fury and Coulson.[16] He later hired a Latverian assassin to try and fail to kill Maria Hill, and instill her the idea that someone was coming for her. However, M.O.D.O.K. found himself having fallen in love with Maria Hill, and backed down from his plan.[15]

As soon as Maria Hill's suspicions were confirmed, she tried to confront M.O.D.O.K., but he had disappeared from the Helicarrier. The mad scientist had returned to Venezuela, where he had once sought the help from a shaman to inquire him about his new-found feelings.[17] Meanwhile, Snapper had carried on with M.O.D.O.K.'s plan, and kidnapped Maria Hill. Back to Venezuela, M.O.D.O.K. confronted the Secret Avengers Phil Coulson and Hawkeye, who had been following his trail,[18] and revealed them his plan, expressing his new desire to save the world. Following their return to the Helicarrier, M.O.D.O.K. and the Secret Avengers started planning their next course of action. Upon clarifying he didn't know Snapper's location, M.O.D.O.K. received a call from his former assistant, who wanted to gloat about his triumph. Snapper subsequently revealed his whereabouts: the Venezuelan rainforest, from where he planned to unleash the monsters from Tlön on Earth.[16]

Among the Secret Avengers

After M.O.D.O.K. and the Secret Avengers arrived to rescue Hill, Snapper tagged him with a transmission conductor, as well as Maria Hill and other people, turning him into the medium of a communal mind-scape that used emotional negativity to create a gate for Tlön's rise.[19] This was part of the plan, which continued with Spider-Woman using her pheromones to emotionally subdue Snapper. The rest of the Secret Avengers tagged themselves with transmission conductors to infiltrate the mindscape and try to imagine the best possible universe, hoping the force of their positive thoughts could reach Hill and outweigh the negative of Tlön. When everything was coming apart at the seams, the final part of M.O.D.O.K.'s plan to defeat Snapper was put in motion, and the sentient bomb Vladimir was dropped on the portal to Tlön. Vladimir opened a black hole that, in contact with the Tlön gate, created a singularity, reverting everything back to normal.[20] With the day saved, M.O.D.O.K. took a leave of absence and went on a vacation at a house in Ohio, where he was visited by Maria Hill.[21]

Gathering of mercenaries

Agents of M.O.D.O.K.[]

M.O.D.O.K. Superior eventually returned from retirement because it had gotten boring for him. Remaining with his change of heart, he created the Mercenary Organization Dedicated Only to Killing, which only took out evil-doers. While confronting one of his recruits, Gwen Poole, deeming her a lying and unworthy member, M.O.D.O.K. wound up shot up to orbit once Gwen's ghost friend Cecil hacked his chair's thrusters.[22]

M.O.D.O.K. Superior later returned to Earth to seek revenge on his former employees, but when he confronted them, he was scared off by their combined might.[23]

Kissing Season[]

As B.R.O.D.O.K.

Hoping to reform himself, M.O.D.O.K. moved to Los Angeles, created an attractive and muscular male body called B.R.O.D.O.K. (Bio-Robotic Organism Designed Overwhelmingly for Kissing) and added love to his programming. Seeing himself rejected by the West Coast women, B.R.O.D.O.K. decided to exact revenge on the city as a whole, creating an offshoot of A.I.M. called Advanced Image Mechanics that turned the women who turned him down into giant monsters. He also made Tigra giant while brainwashing her into causing damage to the city, attracting the attention of the reformed West Coast Avengers.[1]

As UltiM.O.D.O.K.

Encounter with Force Works[]

During the robot revolution, M.O.D.O.K. awakened the giant robot Ultimo from his slumber below Lingares. After failing to contain him, M.O.D.O.K. created an army of Deathloks out of local countrymen, but they rebelled against him due to embracing the values of the ongoing A.I. uprising.[4] When Force Works arrived at Lingares to investigate and crossed paths with both the Deathloks and Ultimo,[24] M.O.D.O.K. approached them to help[25] and outfitted War Machine with an invention of his, the Subatomic Outgoing Broad-Isotope Gun, with which Rhodes managed to blow off the robot's head. M.O.D.O.K. took the chance to take control of Ultimo's beheaded body, rechristening himself as UltiM.O.D.O.K. When she confronted the villain, Force Works operative Quake opened a rift in the ground to make him fall into the magma beneath UltiM.O.D.O.K.. He resisted, but was eventually pushed into the fissure by the army of Deathloks, whom War Machine had managed to take control of.[4]

Head Games[]

M.O.D.O.K

Working with Iron Man

Suffering from strange visions of a family he didn't remember having, M.O.D.O.K. became somewhat unstable, prompting his rival Monica Rappaccini to declare him unfit to lead A.I.M. and violently oust him from the organization. With no resources at his disposal, M.O.D.O.K. saw himself forced to seek the help of Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, to uncover the reason for his mysterious visions. Tony discovered a strange damaged drive in M.O.D.O.K.'s hardware, but he needed his StarkWiz technology, which had been recently stolen by A.I.M., to repair it. Fortunately for them, Monica was going to auction it off at the Criminal Technology Show Expo, so the duo decided to infiltrate the event in order to steal the machine. They were ultimately discovered and had to fight their way out of there with the item.[26]

After repairing the drive, Tony traced its source back to the original M.O.D.O.C. experiment on Boca Caliente. M.O.D.O.K. went there to investigate and ended up being killed by Gwenpool, who had been hired to do so by Monica. Confronted by images of M.O.D.O.K.'s family, Gwenpool broke through the fourth wall and prevented his death, later helping him track down the house present in his visions. Following the lead, M.O.D.O.K. traveled to Butterville, Ohio, only to find the father of his genetic template there. Alvin Tarleton revealed himself to be the true founder of A.I.M. and also the person behind George Tarleton's transformation into the original M.O.D.O.K.[27]

M.O.D.O.K.'s family

The visions Superior was having were manifestations of a program called J-O-D-1-E, which was meant to sedate M.O.D.O.K. while he was in rest mode. It had been inactive since the original M.O.D.O.K. changed his core function from "computing" to "killing," but was restored when Superior sustained damage a week prior. Having subdued Superior, Alvin attempted to turn him into the weapon his son was meant to have become before he went out of control and took over A.I.M., but Superior fought back and trapped Alvin's consciousness in his cell phone. He later used the bodies of left over Super-Adaptoid robots to create real-life, weaponized versions of his imaginary family; subsequently using them to take over leadership of A.I.M. again.[28]

Application of Project G.O.D.O.S.[]

Just when M.O.D.O.K. was planning to colonize the Moon with A.I.M., the Hulk suddenly attacked him and his minions in order to steal some technology from them. As Hulk fought his way past his minions, M.O.D.O.K. unleashed Project G.O.D.O.S., a giant battlesuit, to fight him. Hulk disabled the battlesuit with a large train and stole various A.I.M. equipment before leaving M.O.D.O.K. to die in an explosion caused by the damaged battlesuit.[6]

Joining Orchis[]

It wasn't long before M.O.D.O.K. resurfaced again, however. Terrorizing a cruise ship with his experiments, he was defeated by the X-Men.[7] Soon after, M.O.D.O.K. was sprung from imprisonment by Nimrod and Doctor Stasis, who recruited him into Orchis as a contract worker.[29]

The Century Game[]

George Tarleton (Clone) (Earth-616) from Captain America Sentinel of Liberty Vol 2 9 001

As M.O.D.O.C.

As part of their civilization-spanning game, the shadowy organization known as the Outer Circle activated within M.O.D.O.K. a sleeper personality programmed to serve as their pawn: M.O.D.O.C., the Mental Organism Designed Only for Control. He was deployed to capture and contain the new Invaders team Captain America assembled to take the Outer Circle down. Having shut the team down for five days, thus buying enough time for A.I.M. to take over Lower Manhattan in the search for Arnim Zola's neganite reactor, M.O.D.O.C. was turned back into M.O.D.O.K., but was soon activated again; this time to deter the Invaders' victory over A.I.M.. However, the Invaders managed to break free from his control and ultimately defeated him, at the cost of the Destroyer's life.[30]

George Tarleton (Clone) (Earth-616) from Thor Annual Vol 6 1 001

As M.Y.T.H.O.S.

The Master of Yggdrasil[]

Tired of getting used as a pawn in service to others, M.O.D.O.K. decided to collect the shards of the shattered Bifrost and, having mastered its power, warped reality to make himself the master of the Ten Realms, building his base on Earth and erasing the memory of heroes in the process. Thor felt the disturbance caused by M.O.D.O.K.'s re-writing of reality and traveled to Earth to face him. Dubbing himself M.Y.T.H.O.S., M.O.D.O.K. easily overpowered Thor, who retreated until getting strong enough to face his enemy again. When Thor came back, M.O.D.O.K. banished him from Earth multiple times, with the God of Thunder returning in every one of them. Once M.O.D.O.K.'s power was depleted, Thor defeated him and reality was turned back to normal.[5]

Fall of X[]

Assuming position as the head of the Operations/Offense division of Orchis, M.O.D.O.K. went on to sabotage Krakoan medicine, making him able to kick the fight-or-flight response within its users into overdrive by broadcasting a certain frequency near them. After multiple successful tests, Doctor Stasis became confident they could use it to win their ongoing war against mutantkind.[31]
