Magnus was a sorcerer from the 6th century, who became a ghost after his death and continued to influence events from an astral plane and by possessing people. Originally he had been the pupil and lover of famed sorceress Morgan Le Fay in the times of Camelot and helped her summon the demon Chthon in Wundagore Mountain - and then seal him there when they found out Chthon was too dangerous for them to control. Upon realizing the depth of Le Fay's evil, Magnus turned against her and stole the Darkhold, a powerful dark grimoire she had used to summon Chthon, hiding it safely to prevent its misuse. Le Fay killed Magnus for this, but he had foreseen this possibility and protected himself by magically transporting his spirit to an astral plane, from where he could possess people to interact with the world for more than a few moments.

For centuries, Magnus hampered Le Fay's plans, unaware that her spirit was hiding in the same astral plane he inhabited. Le Fay had died not longer after Magnus, but she time-travelled from before her death to the future using magic, and Magnus confronted her repeatedly to prevent her from recovering the Darkhold while his remains were in Westminster Abbey. In the 20th century, Magnus also possessed arthropologist Jonathan Drew when Magnus discovered that Drew and his business partner Herbert Wyndham (later the High Evolutionary) were digging uranium in Wundagore. Magnus deduced that Chthon would return due to this industrial activity and, while he failed to convinced Wyndham of the supernatural threat, they did presented a common front against the demon, battling him and keeping him imprisoned for decades.

In more recent times, Magnus guided and supported Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), daughter of the man he had possessed before. Besides fighting together against shared enemy Le Fay, Magnus helped her uncover the truth about her father's death and her own origins, and supported her to become a costumed adventurer, from London to Los Angeles. When he noticed he was developing romantic feelings for her, he decided to leave; but returned to her side some time later when Le Fay prepared a new trick to steal Spider-Woman's soul. Magnus helped Spider-Woman go to the past, where she killed Le Fay, but Spider-Woman's body was apparently killed in the present too. Magnus wanted to take her to his astral plane to stay together forever, as he was in love with her, and at her request he cast a spell so that everyone who had known Spider-Woman would forget her. However, his spell was faulty and several of Spider-Woman friends, including some of the Avengers, made a joint effort to resurrect her, while Le Fay herself tried to take over Spider-Woman's body. Le Fay defeated Magnus in the astral plane, but he recovered enough to sacrifice all the existence he had left so that Spider-Woman could return to her own body, defeating Le Fay once more.

History

Origin in Camelot[]

Magnus was born in Listeneise (now a part of Cumbria, England)[1] in 554 AD.[25] He discovered that he had a talent for magic and innate powers,[29] as well as the capacity to learn magic abilities.[2] That allowed him to apply, in vain, for the position of apprentice to Merlin in Camelot; although Magnus was rejected,[1] he did meet Merlin personally[22] and became familiar, in his youth, with the knights and their codes of conduct at the court of King Arthur.[26]

Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616), Morgan Le Fay (Earth-616) from Avengers Vol 1 241 001

Magnus became Morgan Le Fay's pupil and lover

Magnus became a servant of Morgan Le Fay,[2] considered the greatest sorceress in the 6th century,[25] and later her student in the dark arts,[22][3][11][25][1][18][30] her foremost pupil according to his words,[31][11] and definitely the fittest among[1] the coven of Le Fay's followers,[25] a prominent sorcerer in the 6th century.[32][33][34][35][36][18][37][12][13][4][38][1] While still her apprentice, Magnus also became Le Fay's lover.[29][25][39][40][41][1] Le Fay, sister to King Arthur,[29] hated Arthur and conspired against him.[11][11] Magnus downplayed this peculiarity of his lover, even though Le Fay's hatred was much greater than her love.[11]

When Magnus discovered Morgan's hatred, he could no longer love her

In the 6th century,[42][40][43] after mastering Celtic sorcery, Le Fay became interested in[16] the indestructible parchments written by the demon Chthon[25][6][44][45][17][18][46] to serve as his touchstone with the physical plane and to manipulate mortals[6][26] (Chthon had escaped the Earth reality to a nether-realm[14] where he had been trapped,[47] but the parchments were a potential way for him to go back to Earth).[48] The parchments found their way to Britain,[6][49][50] where Le Fay, with help from her followers[17][43][46][40][41] (including Magnus),[1] gathered[44][17][46] most of them[15] and had them bound into book form[6][49][50][15][17][46][43] for the first time,[6][49][50] also coining the word "Darkhold" to refer to this book;[49] her cult of occultism students venerating the Darkhold,[25] which included Magnus himself,[15] was eventually known as Darkholders[45][42][40][43] and got an increase in numbers and power due to Le Fay's charisma and the hopelessness of the Dark Ages.[42] However, once Le Fay got her hands[11][45] on the Darkhold itself, the book containing the greatest number of magical spells on Earth[16][44] with preponderance of black and evil magicks,[25][44][45][18] Magnus finally understood the depth of evil within Le Fay, and could no longer love her.[11][17][46][1] Still, fearing Le Fay too much to simply leave, and hoping to change her, Magnus stayed among the Darkholders.[1]

Darkhold, Darkholders (Earth-616), Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616), Morgan Le Fay (Earth-616), Wundagore Mountain from Avengers Vol 1 187 001

Magnus participated in the First Rising of Chthon

The Darkholders aimed to use the Darkhold to summon Chthon and force the demon to do their bidding[25][14][16][45][42][43][40][41] (Le Fay specifically aimed for Chthon to help her against her enemy Merlin),[15] with Magnus helping in the preparations[1] while also looking for a chance to steal the Darkhold.[11] Le Fay took Magnus[14][15][32][39][33] and a number of other Darkholders to Central Europe,[16][43][44][45][17][46][43] to summon Chthon on a mountain in the territory later called Transia.[43][51][52] They used the Darkhold[14][25][15][50][51][42][6] to raise Chthon[14][25][15][44][17][46][50][52][42][6][40][41][53] in his so-called First Rising,[15][50] only to find that Chthon's power was too great to yield to any mortal.[14][1][25][15][16][16][44][45][17][46][43][50][52][42][6][40][41] Understanding their blunder[43][42] at having freed such a threat upon the mortal plane,[6][42] the Darkholders tried to banish Chthon[14][25][43] back to his nether-realm.[14][25][43] Failing at this,[14][25][43] they received unexpected reinforcement from Merlin, who had sensed Chthon's presence and collaborated by adding his power to that of the Darkholders,[43][40][41] as did Catholic conjurer St. Brendan,[40][41] and still just barely managed to entrap[25][14][1][15][32][16][44][45][17][46][43][50][51][52][6][40][41] Chthon's spirit[25][15][32][42][40][41] (barely a fragment of Chthon's power)[43] in the mountain,[14][25][1][15][32][44][45][17][46][43][52][42][6][40][41] later Christened Wundagore.[14][25][15][44][45][17][46][43][51][52][42][6][40][41] Magnus personally participated in the capture of Chthon,[32][52][39] although Merlin's unlikely help was critical for this success.[54]

Darkhold, Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Avengers Vol 1 187 001

Magnus steals the Darkhold

Utterly dismayed in the presence of such an absolute evil like Chthon and Le Fay herself,[25][22][16][44][45] Magnus completely forsake Le Fay and her Darkholders,[14][25][22][43][6][16][55][56][50][49][42][40][41][1][15][17][46] devoting his time to find a way to keep the Darkhold away from those who'd use it for evil.[11][1] Little more than one year after the binding of the Darkhold,[11][1][44] and one year after Chthon's First Rising,[45] Magnus stole the Darkhold[14][22][11][50][6][57][49][42][40][41][1][15][44][45][17][46] and secreted it away in a tower[14][11][16][43][50][6][57][49][42][1][25][15][55][44][45][56][17][46] on the Isle of Wight[43][42][40][41][1][11][44][45][17][46] (later known as the Tower of Darkhold[40][41] or the Dark Tower)[55][56] which he enchanted with an intricate spell[50][6][49][42][14][11][25][55][56][44][17][46] so that nobody of evil intent could enter the Tower[16][6][57][43][50][49][42][40][41][1][14][11][25][15][55][56][44][45][17][46] without forfeiting his or her life.[25]

Magnus then escaped the Darkholders,[11][57][26][22] but, correctly anticipating that Le Fay would want to get back at Magnus[25][1] by killing him,[1] he took precautions[11][1] by developing his own spell[11] in which, through the execution of intricate rituals,[25][1] he ensured that his spirit would not move on after the death of his body,[1][25] instead being transported to an astral plane[11] so that he'd continue existing in a spectral form,[11][1] as long as he'd be astrally projecting at the moment of his death.[11]

Magnus (Earth-616), Morgan Le Fey (Earth-616) from Amazing Spider-Man Annual Vol 1 22 001

Morgan Le Fay kills Magnus

For the rest of his life,[58] while living alone and on the run, Magnus focused on his studies[11] but he also gathered a trove of mystical objects,[10][35][30] collectively called the Magnus artifacts,[30] apparently for the purpose of keeping them out of the wrong hands[58] and/or to use those himself.[37] One of these items was the Bride of Slorioth,[58] a golden statuette that served as a lock for the transtemporal prison that had imprisoned the demon Slorioth for thirteen millennia;[58] Magnus used the statuette without freeing Slorioth,[37] but he also wanted to keep it safe: Slorioth could use the Bride to corrupt mortals and make them obey his will, but as far as it is known, he failed to do so with Magnus.[58] Magnus also possessed a series of protective wards that imprisoned another demon described as "the intruder from beyond".[10]

Meanwhile, Le Fay was overly outraged at Magnus' betrayal[25][16] and him stealing the Darkhold.[25] She eventually found[11][25][1] and killed[11][25][16][17][46][1] her sworn enemy Magnus[27][59][60] by strangling him with her naked hands[25][1] and with a magic assault[1] at a moment in which Magnus was astrally projecting.[11][1] If not for the spell he had developed, Magnus would have died in one day,[11] but instead Magnus' spirit survived.[11][25][45][46]

Post Mortem[]

Still in the 6th century,[42][55][56] good-intentioned sorcerer Modred the Mystic[15][50][42][55][56][40][41] bypassed Magnus' spell and[42][55][56] took the Darkhold from the Tower,[15][50][6][42] his soul being corrupted in the process,[15][50][6] although after that mystic knight St. Brendan disassembled the book and scattered its pages through Europe[15][50][40][41][49] hoping that nobody'd be able to gather them again.[49]

Astral Realm of Morgan Le Fay from Avengers Vol 1 240 001

The Astral Plane where Magnus' spirit existed for centuries

Magnus' bones would meanwhile laid in an unmarked grave until they turned to dust, at which point his spirit was completely released.[25][1] Having become a ghost,[4][38][39][37][35] Magnus came to inhabit an astral plane[23][24][45][46] or interdimensional space[24] inhabited by the ethereal essences of mystics who, like Magnus, had survived physical death[23][24] (This plane was confirmed to not be the Astral Plane typically mentioned by magicians).[24] However, Magnus spent centuries in a very weakened state that allowed him to only return to Earth for very short timespans, and even when recovered, he'd only be able to stay more than one day[11] by possessing another body.[11][45][46]

After her own physical death. Le Fay's spirit also survived there[11][44][45][17][46] by similar means,[45] apparently spending centuries scheming in the astral plane, waiting for her chance to escape to the world of living.[11] Le Fay's magic was especially powerful in this plane,[11] yet Magnus, barely checking for other people there,[23] had failed to notice her.[11]

The past version of Le Fay living in the sixth century, before the Darkhold had been taken out of the Tower,[17] was imprisoned by Merlin in her own castle[44][17] yet she used her magic to project herself astrally into several future periods,[44][45] especially in the contemporary period,[45] in several attempts to recover the Darkhold,[44][45][17] which she aimed to use to break Merlin's spell and release herself. She always failed,[44][45][40][46][41] more often than not thanks to the interference of Magnus' ghost.[27][29][44][45][40][46][41]

Westminster Abbey from Amazing Spider-Man Annual Vol 1 22 001

Magnus' spirit also inhabited Westminster Abbey, London

Ever from the Thirteenth Century,[1] Magnus also began to inhabit London's Westminster Abbey, watching for signs of Chthon's return to Earth[25][1] so as to try and stop him.[61] Magnus' belongings,[35] including his trove of mystic artifacts,[10] remained on Earth, and while Magnus could no longer protect them,[58] apparently he kept an eye on those to some extent and, when Magnus was on Earth possessing a living body, he sometimes took his properties with himself while traveling.[10][62][63]

Possessing Jonathan Drew[]

In the mid-1920s,[30][37] Baron Gregor Russoff sold a part of his terrains in Transia,[14][12][13][26] including Wundagore Mountain,[14][33][12][13] to American[6][39] arthropologist[6][39][33] Jonathan Drew,[6][33][39][12][13] who shared it with his business partner[6][39][12][13][26] geneticist[42] Herbert Wyndham.[6][39][33][12][13] Russoff, who was a werewolf, was believed to[12][13] have been raising money to try and fund his black magic-based research on a cure for his condition.[14] Circa 1925,[30][39] Drew and Wyndham moved there with Drew's wife Merriem and their one-year-old daughter Jessica[39][30][26][37] began building a scientific research center on their property,[6][39][36] finding uranium there in the process[14][6][52][39][33][26] which made them wealthy;[14][6][52][39][33][26][36] they built their Wundagore Citadel of Science[14][6][52][39][33][26][36][43] with that money[14][6][52][39][33][26][36] and external help; the Citadel was finished in 1928.[51][26][36]

In 1931, seven-year-old Jessica[39][30][26][37] fell deadly ill because of uranium poisoning.[22][6][39][33][34][30][37] Her father treated her with experimental serum made of an irradiated spider's blood, as his experiments had shown the spider's superior resistance to radiation,[39][33][34][30][26][37] then Wyndham placed her in cryogenic suspension in his experimental genetic accelerator to provide her with further treatment,[6][39][33][34][30][26][37] which would last for years[33][34][26] (Thanks to Wyndham's technological advances, Jessica would not age and she'd learn via subliminal tapes).[30] Merriem died[39][33][34][30][26][37] just a few days later,[39][30] attacked by Baron Russoff in his werewolf form.[30][12][13][26][37] Having lost his whole family, Jonathan became so crestfallen[39][33][34] that he left Wundagore[22][39][33][34] for England,[39][33][34] leaving Jessica in his friend Wyndham's custody.[33][34] Meanwhile, Wyndham found the werewolf himself, designed a silver-coated protective armor[33][34][42][26] and captured him,[33][34][12][13][26] keeping Russoff safely contained during the full moons for the next decades;[12][13] Wyndham also genetically accelerated animals into "New Men", giving them humanoid posture, intelligence[52][33][34][42][43] and education in the Citadel; he also adopted the name of High Evolutionary, Lord of Mount Wundagore.[64][36]

Jonathan Drew (Earth-616), Magnus (Earth-616) from Amazing Spider-Man Annual Vol 1 22 001

Magnus possessed Jonathan Drew

In early[25] 1932,[1] Jonathan Drew visited London,[25] and Magnus's ghost sensed Chthon's evil energies on him.[18][1] Studying Jonathan's troubled[5][6][39] mind telepathically,[25][5][6] Magnus discovered that Jonathan had been on Wundagore[25] (a place the sorcerer remembered well from the First Rising),[5][6][39][52] building the Citadel on Chthon's tomb[25][26][18] and doing scientific work.[1] Magnus correctly believed that the construction and drilling affected Chthon's prison and would eventually allow the demon to raise again.[25][18] Magnus immediately took control of Jonathan's body[14][25][32][57][5][6][39][52][42][36][65][40][18][64][30][61][1][41] to travel to Wundagore[5][6][52][42][18][1] and warn Wyndham of the danger,[32][5][52][42][18][1] prompting him and his people to leave the place.[25] Magnus arrived on Wundagore on March 1932,[25][18] six weeks after finding Jonathan.[25]

In Jonathan Drew's body, Magnus contacted the High Evolutionary

Magnus immediately identified himself as a ghost possessing Drew's body[25][1] to warn Wyndham about Chthon.[25][66][26][18][43][36][64][51] Believing to be in front of Jonathan, Wyndham received him with open arms[25][1] and had one of his New Men, Porga, pour him a drink while his guest explained himself.[25] Scientifically inclined, Wyndham gave no credit to those words,[25] instead believing that Jonathan had went crazy[25] due to the grief of losing his family.[25] As Wyndham refused to leave,[25][26][18] Magnus decided to stay with him,[26][18][51] each of them keeping an eye on the other.[26][18]

Magnus recommended Wyndham to train the New Men[4][32][1] in medieval tradition[32][42] following the spirit and methods of the Knights of the Round Table[52][33][34][32] including discipline[52][32] and chivalry codes[14][33][34][42] which Magnus had learned during his youth.[26] Initially sceptic, Wyndham finally saw it as a good way to provide the evolved animals with morals and ethics.[4][1] In the process, these New Men that joined the so-called Knights of Wundagore[32][52][1][51] were trained in combat[33][34][42][36][64] (as Magnus hoped to use them to protect the place during Chthon's eventual attack, and eventually Wyndham, thou still unconvinced saw wisdom in protecting their land against sorcerous foes).[4][32][52][42][36][64][51] They also received advanced weaponry, armor, vehicles[42][36][64] and titles of nobility.[36][64] Magnus supervised the training of these Knights,[52][42][26][18] helping Wyndham at this[57][33][34][42][26][18] while making sure to instil the right mindset in the Knights.[14][42][26][18] The courage and fairness that Magnus instilled in the New Men gave them resistance to Chthon's corruptive powers, so the demon's initial plan to use the New Men as his agents was completely foiled.[14] Still, Wyndham refused to accept Magnus' tales about ghosts and demons, believing it was Jonathan suffering from insanity to justify the change in his personality and the knowledge that Magnus had and Wyndham believed Jonathan could not have obtained easily.[38]

Darkhold, Gregor Russoff (Earth-616), Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme Vol 1 9 001

Magnus possessed Baron Russoff's body in an attempt to stop Chthon, but Chthon attacked the body

In 1958,[26][43][18][30][13][1][36][64] Baron Russoff acquired the Darkhold[14][4][50][42] (thou he falsely told Wyndham and Magnus otherwise),[4] unwittingly taking it close to Mount Wundagore, Chthon's prison.[6][50][67][42] and decided to summon Chthon[38][59][67][47][12][26][18][43][13][1] hoping the latter could cure his lycanthropy.[38][67][47][12][43][26][18][13][1][40][41] Just then, Chthon had Russoff take the Book as close as the Mountain as possible.[4] Meanwhile, the Citadel of Science received a refugee, a pregnant Roma woman named Magda who had been escaping an unrelated threat. Magnus believed that the woman could be a vessel for the demon, and used his magic to check on her to his satisfaction, even if Wyndham believed it was nonsense. While Magda had no trace of Chthon in her, Magnus then detected that the Darkhold had entered the vicinity of Wundagore, which Magnus would have sensed before had he not been distracted with the woman's arrival. Magnus concluded that Chthon would attack that same night and warned Wyndham[4] so that he'd prepare the nights. Magnus then decided to use his spectral form, without the hindrance of Jonathan's physical body, to find the Darkhold and sabotage the summoning;[4][38][43][18] when Magnus left Jonathan's body, Wyndham for a moment believed he had seen the ghostly form.[4] Indeed, Wundagore was almost immediately attacked by the Other, an elemental host of Chthon,[14][4][42][40][43][40][41] but the Knights of Wundagore were ready to confront it,[4][59][32][68][43][30][36][64][26] and the High Evolutionary himself joined the fray.[4][59][53][30][26] Meanwhile, Magnus found Baron Russoff at the Mount's base, the Darkhold on his lap.[4][38] Magnus understood that Russoff had read aloud the Spell of Ascension[4][40][43][41] and decided to possess Russoff and read aloud the Spell of Binding to stop the Other's manifestation before it was too late.[4][59][38][12][43][40][13][41][1] When Magnus started doing so, Chthon noticed the interference and tried to stop Magnus with magic-based blasts.[4][59][12][43][13] Russoff's body failed to resist and expired,[38][59][47][12][43][13][1][40][41] but Magnus kept him alive enough to end the spell[38][12][43][40][41][36][64][26] which trapped Chthon on within mountain once more;[43][1][40][41] for no other reason than spiteful revenge, Chthon ensured that Russoff died,[40][41] but could not affect Magnus,[38] by then one of his major enemies[53][61] along with Wyndham.[53] Thus the battle ended thanks to Magnus, who drove Chthon back,[14][38][6][52][42][53][50][47][51][18][36][64][26] and to the Evolutionary and his Knights,[14][6][52][50][42][51] but by then over half[43] of the available forty-two Knights of Wundagore[4] had died violently or because of the wounds, seventeen of them during the battle itself.[38][26][18] Wyndham blamed himself, as he had refused to believe Magnus' tales of Chthon and had not prepared his Knights adequately, believing he was just giving them a code of behavior.[38] No one in Wundagore, not Magnus nor Wyndham nor anyone else, even suspected that Chthon had made use of this battle to obtain a new vessel in one of Magda's babies, who would eventually be known as the Scarlet Witch,[4][47][42][51][26][18][36][64] and also forged a mystical bond with Jonathan's still-cryonized daughter Jessica.[30]

The day after the battle,[1] Magnus went to the Citadel with Russoff's corpse, explaining what had happened, and taking pity on Russoff's tragic doom. Wyndham then admitted his error to Magnus, recognizing the existence of the supernatural. Magnus then decided that, as Chthon was no longer a threat, there was no reason for him to remain in Wundagore or keep controlling Jonathan's body, so he bid farewell to Wyndham in friendly yet courteous terms. Magnus asked Wyndham to give Russoff's family his condolences, and to keep an eye on Jonathan's daughter.[38] Magnus left[26][18][1] that same day and released Jonathan.[1] Magnus however kept an eye on Jonathan for a time, discovering that he had started working in the British Museum and eventually made a discovery that was connected with the goals of the company Pyrotechnics; but he lost track of Magnus after that.[29]

Magnus did not take control of Russoff's Darkhold copy (also called Second Book of Sins and Diary of Gregor Russoff),[40][41] which remained in Russoff's estate and was eventually acquired, with the terrains, by a Miles Blackgar, then stolen from him.[50] This book[40][41] was later coveted by Count Dracula, lord of the Vampires, but after a confrontation with vampire-hunter Rachel van Helsing and her team, Dracula abandoned it in the snows of the Alps, so that nobody else could it.[69][40][41] In recent times, Le Fay's spirit found and got her spectral hands on the book, but Magnus snatched it from her. Not long after that, Modred the Mystic would obtain the book and use it in a new attempt to revive Chthon through the then-adult Scarlet Witch.[40][41]

Mentoring Spider-Woman[]

Carnaby Street, Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616), Jessica Drew (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 2 001

In Carnaby Street, Magnus meets Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman)

Later, Magnus possessed an eccentric[5][6] tailor[57][5][6] in London[57][1] and magically changed the clothing store in Carnaby Street into a locale with a sign "Magnus, Specialist in the Supernatural", dealing in curio products and esoteric services such as fortune telling. Then, Jonathan's daughter Jessica passed by. By then she was a young adult woman with superhuman powers (secretly the heroine Spider-Woman)[27] who, having been brainwashed by terrorist organization Hydra to believe she was an evolved spider but later overcame this thanks to Modred,[70][39][61] and was looking for her father.[5][6][39][30] With his magic, Magnus discovered what she was looking for,[27] and also that Jonathan had recently been murdered in Los Angeles.[71] Magnus felt he owed Jonathan some small debt in exchange for having used his body, and decided he would pay that by helping Jonathan's daughter[5][6][33] by becoming her friend,[6][39][50][30] advisor[39] and surrogate father[72] - thou he deemed unwise to reveal all of his past to that young woman[2] whose mind was troubled enough at that point;[72][2] among other problems, Jessica emitted pheromones that troubled her interactions with most people[30] (but not with Magnus), and her education had not really prepared her to behave as the adult woman she really was.[27] In their first encounter,[27][9] Magnus offered Jessica a palm-reading and impressed her by correctly knowing her name; he then divined her current quest for her father and recommended her to search for him in the United States. Pondering on his words back home, Jessica decided that Magnus may be having a point, and decided to travel to America after talking with Magnus again.[27]

Hoping to get the Darkhold,[27][6][50] and correctly deducing that Magnus either had the book or knew where it was,[27] Le Fay empowered modern-day criminal Jason "Slapper" Struthers as the horse-riding, sword-wielding villain Excaliber[27][60][17][30][30] and sent him to coerce Magnus to tell where the Darkhold was.[27][30][17][30][1] Excaliber attacked Magnus' shop, burning his assets and the locale in a failed attempt to intimidate the old man. Jessica, as Spider-Woman bumped onto Excaliber heading to Magnus' shop,[27] and she helped Magnus by confronting Excaliber.[27][60][9][1] The ruckus attracted the attention of Scotland Yard, who sent S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jerry Hunt there to investigate. Even when Excaliber had Spider-Woman against the ropes, Magnus refused to yield and do Le Fay's will.[27] Spider-Woman defeated Excaliber,[27][17][30][30] disarming him and turning him human, then knocking him down. She then asked Magnus for explanations; he was elusive, just saying that he was an enemy of Le Fay and not delving into her or his longevity or the magic aspect. Magnus then undid the spell on his shop, turning it back into a clothing store,[71] and convinced Spider-Woman[27][71] to go to Los Angeles (a place he had never visited before)[71] with him,[27] still not telling her about his previous connection with her father.[30] They left behind Struthers for S.H.I.E.L.D. to find him, and one of them included a note saying "America Spider-Woman" for Hunt to find.[27] However, as Spider-Woman had foiled Le Fay's plan,[40][30][41] Le Fay considered her a bitter enemy.[6][50][8] Le Fay had also recognized how Spider-Woman had some of Chthon's power in her, thus she decided to try and control Spider-Woman to use her in her own plans to break Merlin's spell.[44][45][46][17]

In Los Angeles, Magnus finds a lodging for himself and his protégée

Magnus and Jessica travelled together to Los Angeles,[71][5][6][39][9][61] where she checked newspapers looking for a place to live they could afford. Using only his magic skills, Magnus found rooms for rent at[71] the Dolly Household, the family home of Priscilla Dolly[71] in North Hollywood.[28] Magnus met with Mrs. Dolly while Jessica was spying on their conversation, and claimed that Jessica was his niece so that Mrs. Dolly would not oppose, even if Jessica naïvely saw no problem in saying they were just friends.[71] Mrs. Dolly accepted both boarders,[71][65][30][1] with Magnus's upper-floor[19] room being Mrs. Dolly's[71] supposedly late husband Nathan Dolly's[19] former "den".[71] Magnus then took Jessica to her father's tomb,[71][30][1] admitting that he had known about Jonathan's death but saying she would not have believed him if he had told her before.[71] Magnus also revealed that Jonathan had been murdered (just a couple months before) by persons as yet unknown,[71] prompting Jessica to investigate and discover Jonathan's involvement with Pyrotechnics;[71][1] Jessica also discovered that Jonathan had met with Congressman James Wyatt, thou Wyatt denied any knowledge of foul play. During that first day, they also heard Mrs. Dolly's adult sons Jake and William arguing with each other:[71] Jake and William were really two wooden mannequins animated by Nathan's life essence (transplanted from two smaller figurines);[19][73][74][75] these mannequins had superpowers and were secretly the villains called Brothers Grimm,[19][73][74][75][65] and Mrs. Dolly had manufactured false civilian identities for them as her sons.[19][76]

Magnus' trimmed look

Magnus changed his physical appearance to a more elegant and neater one that Mrs. Dolly preferred, and also introduced Jessica and Mrs. Dolly; Magnus used his magic so that Jessica wouldn't make a bad impression because of her pheromones. Mrs. Dolly then introduced them to her children at dinner. At that meal, Mrs. Dolly mentioned that she had met Jonathan Drew, a previous boarder who had worked with her children at Pyrotechnics; Jake denied remembering him, and William downplayed what he knew about Jonathan, immediately leaving in a suspicious manner. Jessica, as Spider-Woman, followed him to Pyrotechnics, where she fell into a trap. Spider-Woman even wondered whether Magnus would be involved in a plot against her, since Magnus had taken her to the Dolly Household, perhaps to lure her there.[28] Spider-Woman was captured by vigilante Hangman,[28][77] then taken to Hangman's haunted house, a crumbling mansion, where the Hangman left her tied up and left; seeing one occasion Le Fay used her magic to harass Spider-Woman with spectral and poltergeist images [77].

Magnus confronts Morgan again

Oblivious to all this, Magnus spent time with Mrs. Dolly, politely taking an interest in her and her family; Mrs. Dolly was favorably impressed with Magnus. Magnus also used his magic to make flowers appear in a vase, impressing Mrs. Dolly, who compared him to a television conjurer[77] and recommended that he look for a job as a stage magician[3] (At some point, however, Mrs. Dolly understood that Magnus really had magic powers).[19][65] Shortly after, Le Fay managed to capture Magnus[77][1] and take him to the Hangman's house to use him in her plan against Spider-Woman: Le Fay generated illusions of Magnus who hostilely harassed Spider-Woman, and then[77] allowed Spider-Woman to see the authentic Magnus, tied to a chair.[77][29] Le Fay appeared in ghostly form[77][29][60][9] with two demonic hitmen, the Doom-Slayers[77][29] Once again, Le Fay tried to convince Magnus to tell her where the Darkhold was, but this time, instead of threatening Magnus directly, she sent her monsters after Spider-Woman. As the Doom-Slayers put Spider-Woman up against a wall, Magnus relented and agreed to collaborate with Le Fay, even as Spider-Woman cursed her. Devising a ruse, Magnus sent Spider-Woman to capture Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night. Magnus justified this because Russell[29] (a descendant of Gregor Russoff)[12] had read the Darkhold and, although he no longer had it, Le Fay could extract the information from his mind. In reality, Magnus was taking advantage of the opportunity to have the opportunity to erase those memories of Russell and thus protect him. Additionally, while Le Fay was distracted by capturing the Werewolf, Magnus sent a notice to S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jerry Hunt, who had followed Spider-Woman to Los Angeles obsessed with her, and let him know where to find her so that Hunt could follow her and help them. Once Spider-Woman had brought the Werewolf and Le Fay secured him, Le Fay tried to extract the information on the Darkhold from the Werewolf's mind in a process that was likely to hurt his brain. Not willing to allow such atrocity, still-tied Magnus released his own astral form to confront Le Fay's in a magic duel, with bolts and shields they generated. During the duel, Spider-Woman heard how Le Fay said she and Magnus were apprentice and master,[29] and Spider-Woman misunderstood that as Magnus being Le Fay's teacher Merlin.[22] The fray was then joined by Hunt, who worked[29] with Spider-Woman against Le Fay.[29][6][60]

Seeing the opportunity, Magnus used deception and, when Le Fay decided to attack Magnus' bound body with flames that turned him into ashes, Magnus had moved to another location but left an illusion that made everyone else believe that he had been cremated. Le Fay then launched a magical attack against Hunt and Spider-Woman, but Magnus protected them with a magical force field, even at the risk of his previous trickery being discovered. Using magic learned from the Werewolf's mind, Le Fay began to cast a time-casting spell that would affect her own body in the past to allow her to live in the present. Hunt tried to stop her, and Le Fay cast another spell on him that destroyed him - or so it seemed; for once again, Magnus left an illusion of Hunt's destruction to save him. Enraged at believing that Le Fay had killed both Hunt and Magnus, Spider-Woman attacked the past version of Le Fay, whom she could see through the unfinished spell, with her venom blasts. That ruined Le Fay's spell and generated a vortex that absorbed Le Fay and the entire house, except for the Werewolf who was solidly tied and Spider-Woman who had grabbed him;[29] in reality, Le Fay had understood she had been defeated that died, and she also cast an illusion so that her enemies would believe that she had been destroyed.[44] Magnus then revealed himself and explained how he had manipulated the situation, although he also said [29] that his powers were almost exhausted after helping them against Le Fay.[29][1] Magnus continued his introspective speech and used his mind-wiping magic on the Werewolf to make him forget that encounter, then other magic to return him to his home - until Magnus noticed that Hunt and Spider-Woman were kissing each other.[29]

After those battles, Jessica decided to investigate her father's death[22][9][30] with the help of Hunt and Magnus.[22][30] On July 2, 1978,[note 1] Magnus chaperoned Jessica and Hunt during a date at the Los Angeles Zoo, during which Hunt told Jessica that he had convinced S.H.I.E.L.D. to use their computer resources for the investigation. Magnus was unsure if Jessica was ready, but failed to convince them to abandon that strategy. Hunt and Jessica discovered through S.H.I.E.L.D. that Jonathan's involvement with Pyrotechnics was significant, so they infiltrated Pyrotechnics and obtained confidential documents and photos. Analysing the documents, Jessica discovered photos of her father with Wyatt, proving that Wyatt had lied to her. At that very moment, Jessica demanded information from Magnus, accusing him of laying a trap for her in her previous visit to Pyrotechnics, and deducing that he was Le Fay's master and therefore Merlin. Laughing, Magnus explained that he had been Le Fay's apprentice, not her master, and told Jessica that he did know something about Jonathan Drew, though not how he had discovered it: Magnus recounted how Jonathan and his scientific partner Herbert Wyndham had worked together to try to cure Jessica of her radiation poisoning, but Jonathan left Jessica in Wyndham's hands and went to work at the British Museum, where he made a discovery that led him to Pyrotechnics. Magnus falsely denied knowing any more about Jonathan,[22] and revealed, in a pretence of speculation, that Pyrotechnics may have manipulated Jonathan,[61] forcing him to work against his will[22] in Pyrotechnics's conspiracy to take over the world,[61] and that Jonathan had attempted to escape[22] only to be killed by Pyrotechnics' people in the process;[22][5][6][39] Hunt doubted this would be feasible, since, Hunt believed, Pyrotechnics would not kill Jonathan if they needed him. Jessica then had an insight, and left the house to confront Wyatt. Magnus urged Hunt to let her act on her own following her own instincts. Hunt however mobilized his S.H.I.E.L.D. contacts to go after Pyrotechnics, and found that Pyrotechnics did indeed intend[22] to use a Neutron Device to irradiate the United States and conquer it with their own soldiers who were mutagenically immunized thanks to Jonathan's discovery.[22][30] After discovering[22][5][6][39] and foiling the plan,[22] Spider-Woman overheard Wyatt confess to Jonathan's murder before dying himself.[22][9][30][61] Other Pyrotechnics leaders involved in Jonathan's murder were arrested, and after that success, Spider-Woman decided to settle in Los Angeles[22][5][6][39] and begin a career as a costumed superhero with Hunt and Magnus' help. [61]

Magnus got a job as a stage magician

During this time, Magnus explained many things to his protégée, including what a poltergeist was.[21] Apparently in order to secure a well-paying job and build up his living expenses,[3] Magnus also began to take leave from the Dolly household on business,[78] until he obtained a job as a stage magician at the Hollywood Club under the pseudonym Charles Magnus. He gained a certain prestige, so much so that the Club did not allow access to the theater after his show had begun, but afterward Magnus would mingle with his admirers, becoming especially popular with young ladies such as Holly and Joy; Magnus's reliable claims of his magical talents were taken for funny jests. One night, Joy even invited Magnus to a party at her house in the high-priced Bel Air neighborhood; given the option of bringing a "plus one", Magnus invited Jessica, who had not arrived in time to see his show. At Joy's house, the party was attacked by the mutant Gypsy Moth. Jessica enlisted Magnus' help in magically donning her Spider-Woman costume. With a gesture, Magnus conjured the costume around Jessica's body; she berated him for compromising her secret identity, but Magnus then made everyone present forget Jessica had ever been there. Jessica confronted the Moth, without Magnus participating in their dogfight, and ultimately Jessica decided not to turn the Moth over to the authorities. [3] During this time, Magnus meditated on his own situation, especially the pros and cons of moving on and leaving Jessica behind, to allow her to develop on her own, now that he had helped find her father Jonathan's killer,[31] thus repaying his own debt to Jonathan.[5][6][33] Besides, Magnus was uneasy with his own[61] growing feelings toward Jessica,[5][39][61] as he was falling in love with her[11][1] when she was clearly in love with another man, Jerry Hunt. On the other hand, Magnus was enjoying the cheering he was receiving as an illusionist, which he had not received in the past.[31]

Magnus, in bed, is alerted of Jessica's peril

The spirit of Nathan Dolly, who had been inhabiting the mannequins of his supposed children,[19][73][74][75] longed to possess a human body, and with the help of his wife,[73][74][73][74][1] set up a plan[19] to coerce Magnus into using his magic[19][73][74][75][1] to transfer the spirits from the mannequins into a living person:[19][73][74][75][1] Jerry Hunt.[31][19][76][1] Making a move, the Brothers Grimm captured Hunt, as well as Spider-Woman, and took them to the Playhouse theater,[31] where they planned to perform the ritual. Nathan believed that they needed to call Magnus somehow, but Priscilla, who had adopted the alias Madame Doll, was confident that Magnus would sense for himself the danger they were putting his charge in. Sure enough, when Magnus returned to the Dolly Household after his show that night, pondering what he would do with his life, his mystical senses alerted him that magic had been used there not long before; but, tired as he was, he could not imagine where it might have come from (he did not suspect the Dollies; Le Fay was no longer a threat; and it was even possible that the residue was from Magnus' own use of magic), so he went to sleep. Mrs. Dolly's collection of dolls came to life as he slept, and woke him, urging him to go to the Playhouse to save Jessica. It took Magnus a sleepy second to grasp the irrationality of the situation, and before he knew it, the dolls had collapsed lifelessly, and he realized that his own mind had sensed Jessica's danger and had animated the figures to warn him. Magnus dressed up, smartened up, and went to the Playhouse.[19]

Magnus destroys Nathan Dolly

Magnus entered to find Mrs. Dolly on the stage, escorted by the Brothers Grimm, and surrounded by Spider-Woman and Hunt, both shackled.[31][19] Greeting Mrs. Dolly politely, Magnus asked for an explanation. Mrs. Dolly explained the situation in her words, though she failed to mention how Nathan's spirit was in the Brothers Grimm and instead claimed it was in the figurines. Magnus' magical senses noticed how the magic trace was not where she was saying[19] and quickly deduced the truth.[19][65][1] Magnus initially refused to transfer Nathan's spirit to Hunt's body,[19][65] as this would leave Hunt unable to use his body.[19] However, when Mrs. Dolly threatened Spider-Woman's life, Magnus complied[19][65] - or at least pretended to comply, as he was already crafting a plan.[19][75][65][1] The Brothers Grimm used knockout gas on Hunt and Spider-Woman (not knowing that Spider-Woman's powers would make her wake up before they expected), then prepared two pentagrams on the floor, one for Magnus to stand in, and the other for Mrs. Dolly to stay with chained Spider-Woman, so that Mrs. Dolly could keep Spider-Woman at gunpoint in case Magnus tried something. The Brothers also prepared two Transfer Circles, one where Hunt would be, tied to a chair, and the other where the Brothers would be, holding the figurines. Magnus warned everyone of the danger of leaving their positions, then generated a ring of blue flames to lock the pentagram, and entranced the Brothers. He claimed to Mrs. Dolly that this was part of the ritual, and that he had to increase the flames to strength his magic, as him being forced to perform the ritual reduced his power. Really, however, he was just tricking Mrs. Dolly so that the flames would hide his actions from her.[19] Magnus then signalled Spider-Woman to disrupt the process by defeating Mrs: Dolly and taking Hunt out of the pentagram,[19][65] which Spider-Woman barely did, being injured in the process.[19] Nathan's spirit left the mannequins,[19][65] only to find the receiving circle empty.[19][65] Magnus busied himself with sealing the Circle[19] to block Nathan's path back to the mannequins.[19][73][74][65][76] Nathan's spirit dissolved,[19][73][74][76][1] apparently destroyed[19] by Magnus.[75] Immediately, the mannequins returned to their original inanimate state,[19] and Mrs. Dolly suffered a mental breakdown,[19][30] refusing to admit that her husband was gone for good or that her supposed children were inanimate figures. Magnus then released Spider-Woman, still partially chained, and Hunt, and explained them what he had deduced, including the fact that her supposed children were actually the split spirit of her husband. Magnus pitied Mrs. Dolly.[19] Magnus and Jessica then hospitalized Mrs. Dolly.[72][65]

Magnus leaves Jessica and Jerry

Magnus finally decided to leave Jessica's side,[5][6][39][61][30] not only because he noticed, with turmoil,[6][61][30] how his feelings for her were growing[5][6][39][61] to the point of him falling in love with her,[23][30][1] but also because he wanted to stop using the body of the tailor, so that the tailor could continue with his own life.[11] Magnus would later also claim he had business to take care of,[2] which may have been related to a new attempt of Chthon to raise,[14][43] and/or to his collection of mystic artifacts[10][1] at that point in San Francisco.[1] Magnus claimed to have gotten a job in Las Vegas,[72] acting at the Oasis, but this was a lie - the Oasis did not even know Magnus. Even his supposed agent, Martin Brojenthal, was probably fictional. When Magnus promised to call Jessica, he was possibly lying too, as he failed to contact her.[7] Magnus bid Jessica and Hunt goodbye at the Los Angeles International Airport, asking Hunt to take good care of Jessica; when he left, Jessica praised Magnus, who had helped her so much even if she never knew how he found her or why he even cared for her.[72] As irony went, even before Magnus had left the airport, Jessica and Hunt ended their relationship.[72][61] Magnus then released his host,[5][39][1] returning the man to London,[5][39] and went back to the astral plane himself.[1]

Although Jessica was too busy to keep in touch with Magnus, during a time of particular personal tension she wanted to call him, and discovered that Magnus did not work at the Oasis; Jessica also failed to locate Bronjenthal, much to her surprise.[7] Realizing that Magnus had disappeared without a trace, Jessica did not forget him,[20] though she did wonder what his motivations had been and if he could really be trusted.[70][54]

During this time, Chthon attempted a new resurrection in Wundagore, using Modred as his slave and the Scarlet Witch as his new host body;[14][43][53] anticipating that Magnus might thwart his plans, Chthon had Modred trick Magnus into being half a world away at the time.[14][43] Chthon was however stopped by the superheroes Avengers.[14][43][53]

Jessica eventually moved to San Francisco,[79][5][6][39] where she reunited with Le Fay, who was once again attempting to affect the present time.[54][60][9] Working as a private investigator,[80][21][39] Jessica nicknamed her new friend, superhuman fugitive Mickey Silk, as "Poltergeist", explaining that her mentor the magician Magnus had taught her the word.[21]

Return to Spider-Woman's life[]

Possessing David Ishima, Magnus contacts Spider-Woman

When Jessica had been in San Francisco for a short time,[39] about a year,[5][6] Magnus understood that Le Fay was preparing a new attack against Jessica explicitly, with the purpose of stealing her soul[2] and taking control of her body,[2][30] still from the 6th century headquarters. Magnus understood that Le Fay was sending hallucinations and nightmares to Jessica to weaken her before launching her attack; but she also deduced that Magnus and Jessica could defeat her if they travelled back in time together and attacked Le Fay while she was still in physical form (Magnus alone would have been unable to defeat Le Fay, but with Jessica's help, victory was possible).[2] At the time, Spider-Woman had just freed several kidnapped superhumans,[2][23] and was throwing a party at her house,[2][23][30] 1 Yarbro Court,[79] for some of them (Daddy Long Legs, Gypsy Moth, Poltergeist, Jack Russell, Shroud, and Tigra).[2] Her then-boyfriend, David Ishima, was intimidated by the company and because Jessica had recently told him she was a superhero, and he took Jessica to the courtyard[2][23] to break up with her.[2][23][30] Mid-conversation,[2] Magnus possessed Ishima's body to talk to Jessica.[2][23][30] Revealing his true ghostly form to Jessica for the first time,[2][5][39] Magnus explained to her Le Fay's plan to kill her,[2][6][39] and asked for her help against Le Fay.[30][61] Magnus explained his plan to travel to the 6th century in astral form to confront Le Fay there,[2][6][39] where Le Fay would be vulnerable,[2] and destroy Le Fay's body.[2][30] Magnus explained that the power of astral time travel could be learned,[2] and that he would help Jessica on that journey,[2][1] promising to return just seconds after they leave. During the preparations and the previous conversation, Jessica expressed how glad she was to see Magnus again after what seemed like years.[2]

Magnus, however, omitted an important detail: If Spider-Woman did not survive, she would not be able to return to her body, and in that case she'd have to go to the same astral plane that Magnus inhabited. Magnus purposely neglected to say this, because he actually wanted this to happen, to enjoy the company of[23] the woman he loved.[23][11] Magnus however did not expect Le Fay to be prepared for this kind of attack and have defenses ready, which could allow Le Fay to kill Spider-Woman, with Magnus' unwitting help.[2]

Jessica Drew (Earth-616), Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 50 001

Magnus and Spider-Woman's spirits in the past

Using his magic,[2][5][6][39] Magnus released Jessica's astral body from her physical form[2][5][6][39][44][45][9][17][46][30] and, along with his own astral body,[2][5][6][39][30] made to travel to Britain[2][5][6][39][9][1] in the 6th century[2][11][5][6][39][44][45][9][17][46][30] along with his own spirit,[2] leaving behind the bodies of Spider-Woman[2][61] and Ishima.[61] In a peasant village near Le Fay's castle, Magnus possessed a suicidal woman, saving her life, so that Jessica's astral form could possess her afterwards, and in a playful twist, magically dressed the woman in Spider-Woman's clothing to create a local legend. Then Magnus' spectral form and Spider-Woman's possessed body flew[2] to Le Fay's castle.[2][45] Only then did Magnus tell Spider-Woman that, because of a spell by Merlin, Le Fay would be destroyed if she left the walls of her castle.[2]

Morgan Le Fay beating Magnus

As soon as they entered the castle, however, Le Fay was protected and encased Magnus' astral form in a transparent sphere, then threw him against a wall; she then taunted Magnus, explaining that his plan had helped put Spider-Woman in Le Fay's hands, so that Le Fay could kill Spider-Woman. With Magnus unable to free herself, Le Fay focused her attacks on Spider-Woman,[2] even bringing the spirits of several of Spider-Woman's friends into spectral form to attack her.[2][60] After a bitter battle[2][5][6][39] (during which Spider-Woman wondered whether Magnus was using his magic to increase Spider-Woman's resolve),[2] Spider-Woman threw Le Fay's body out of the castle,[2][23][11][39][44][45][60][46][17][1] causing it to disintegrate.[2][23][11][5][6][39][44][45][60][9][46][61][17] However, Le Fay's astral form survived[5][6][44][45] in the same way Magnus had cheated death[5][6][39][9] (i.e., by mystically preserving his astral form)[5][6][39][9] and accessing the same astral plane as Magnus[44][45][46][17] where she would remain for centuries[11][45] without Magnus ever realizing her presence.[23][11] Additionally, Le Fay cast a spell[2][11][5][6][39][44][45][46][30][17] to prevent Spider-Woman's astral form from re-entering her physical body.[2][23][11][5][6][39][44][45][46][30][61][17][1] as a way to get even on her.[23][11][30][1]

Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 50 001

Magnus uses his powers to make everyone forget about Spider-Woman

Magnus used his magic to return to the present day with Spider-Woman,[2][23][30] explaining that her friends' spirits had returned to their bodies with only a slight emotional commotion, and that the peasant whose body they had borrowed was fine.[2] They found Spider-Woman's body had apparently died in her absence,[2][23][11][61][30] and her astral form was unable to merge with it.[2] Magnus confirmed this was Le Fay's spell,[2] but he hid information:[23] Her body still had a shred of life.[61][30] He claimed to be[23] unable to breach the barrier on her body with his own powers,[2][5][6][39][39] weakened after the time travel;[5][6][5][39] but this was false: Magnus did know there was a chance for her body to survive and for them to overpower Le Fay's blocking spell, yet he decided not to even try so that he could take Spider-Woman to the astral plane with him and enjoy her company. He did use his magic to prevent Spider-Woman's astral form from dissipating and allow her to exist in the same way that he existed.[23] Both in astral form, Magnus consoled Spider-Woman[2][5][6][39] (who at that point really believed her body had died)[2][11] and told her that she had become an angel-like spirit who, like himself, would be active in the world and discover many secrets that the living people never knew of.[2] At her request, Magnus agreed to cast a spell so that every living person who had met Jessica Drew or Spider-Woman would forget about her,[2][23][6][30][1] so that they wouldn't mourn for her.[2][23][30] He did,[2][23][30] although he also knew that she could be revived and that his forgetfulness spell might fail[1][5][6][39] especially because their adventure had almost exhausted his magic.[5][6][5][39] Then, infatuated Magnus[23][11][1] took Spider-Woman to the astral plane[2][23][11][1] hoping to spend future centuries with her, thus being less lonely.[23]

Avengers Vol 1 240

Spider-Woman's spirit tried to reach her body in the hospital, with help from Magnus, the Avengers and Dr. Strange

After Magnus and Spider-Woman had left,[2][23] the forgetfulness spell affected her friends and allies in the area;[23] when Ishima entered the house, Tigra asked what had happened and why Jessica was not with him. Then the spell hit them as a ripple of confusion, with many of them not remember how they had reached the place (and a number of them deciding to leave).[23] The Shroud was instinctively drawn to the courtyard, and[23] found Spider-Woman's inert body.[23][1] Just for a close friend to see the body was enough for him to remember about her and partially break Magnus' spell.[30] Shroud's screams attracted McCabe, Tigra, and Poltergeist, who also remembered about her;[23] they immediately tried to resuscitate her[23][30][1] and took her to St. Anthony's Hospital in San Francisco,[81][1] where she was put on life support.[23][61][1] To their surprise, the hospital staff failed to recognize her or think twice about her strange disguise; they found out it was as if her existence had been erased, which caused Poltergeist to blame himself without a real reason. Quickly understanding that someone was trying to kill Spider-Woman, Tigra and the Shroud kept a watch on her.[23] However, at that point Spider-Woman noticed her clinically-dead-but-still-living body calling her astral form; only, every time she tried to reach the body, she was repelled.[23][61] (This was partly Le Fay's doing: She had allowed Spider-Woman to detect that her body was still alive, hoping that Spider-Woman would convince Magnus to help her return to her body; and then Le Fay would attack, blocking Spider-Woman's way back to her body until her astral form would evaporate,[11] and then Le Fay herself would take over Spider-Woman's body).[11][61] Poltergeist, Tigra, and the Shroud perceived these attempts as a ghost-like Spider-Woman hovering over Jessica's inert body. After three such sightings,[23] Tigra asked the Avengers, a superhero team she had contact with, for help.[81][23][5][6][39] The Avengers, in turn, called their allies Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange[23][5][6][39] and biochemist Doctor Henry Pym. Strange was quick to understand how Spider-Woman's mind had left her body,[23]

Meanwhile, in the astral plane, Magnus came clean with Spider-Woman, telling her what he had omitted about her apparent death, and her lovelorn, yet admittedly selfish, motivations.[23][1] While Spider-Woman did not return his feelings, she wasn't angry at him either.[23] She did ask Magnus to help her return to her body,[23][11] which he did with an unblocking spell, after warning her of the risks.[23] However, when Spider-Woman was already reaching Earth and in fact even interacting with Doctor Strange[23] (who tried to breach the barrier around Spider-Woman's physical form)[23][5][6][39] Le Fay attacked Magnus by surprise in the astral plane, leaving his spirit being unconscious and smoking;[23][11] she caught him by surprise because he had not worried to check on other inhabitants of that plane.[23] From the astral plane, Le Fay then attacked Spider-Woman's astral form, stopping her between both dimensions,[23][11] knowing that it was a matter of time before Spider-Woman's soul would be destroyed,[23][11][44] and that would allow Le Fay to usurp Spider-Woman's physical body.[23][11][60][44][45][17][46] Le Fay then try to usurp Spider-Woman's body,[11][44][45][60][61] but was immediately confronted by the Avengers, Doctor Strange[11][5][6][39][44][45][60][9][61][17][30][30] and the Shroud,[11][44][45][60][61][17][30][30] who even travelled to the astral plane to battle her.[11][44][45][60] During the battle, Le Fay taunted her enemies, explaining how he had manipulated and then defeated his hated ex-disciple Magnus.[11]

Magnus' spirit ceases existing

However, Magnus recovered consciousness, understanding how he had been tricked. Seeing how Le Fay's attention and power was distracted by her fight with the Avengers, Magnus took the chance to try and help Spider-Woman:[11] Doctor Strange was also trying to guide Spider-Woman's ghostly form to her body, yet she had trouble to fight psychic winds that kept her away. Magnus then went to Spider-Woman, to help her[11] for the last time.[11][9] He also told her of his past[11] then Magnus sacrificed his astral existence[11][5][6][39][44][45][61][30][1] by spending the last magic he had, as he had decided it was time to face death properly. He asked Spider-Woman to live on for him, and vanished, not giving her a chance to stop him.[11] Thanks to this, and to Doctor Strange's magic,[11][5][6][39] Spider-Woman returned to her physical body[11][5][6][39][44][45][9][61][30][1] and even woke up her hospital bed,[11][5][6][39] although as a side effect of Strange's magic, her powers had been affected.[11][5][6][9][1] Le Fay quickly understood how[11] her enemy Magnus[9] had spoiled her plan,[11][30][17] and she was defeated.[11][44][45][30][17]

After this situation, Spider-Woman was in good health, thou she had lost[11][39] some of[61] her powers;[11][5][6][39] she decided to abandon her customed identity[11][5][6][39][9] and continue her life only as a private investigator.[11][9] Doctor Strange came to be informed of Magnus' past deeds.[59] Although Le Fay had been apparently destroyed and Strange had cast a spell to prevent her from recovering,[11][44][45] she eventually freed herself of that[44][45] and was next seen trying to possess Lissa Russell,[44][45][17][46] another young woman cursed by the Darkhold and related to Gregor Russoff.[44][45]

Anthony Druid (Earth-616), Bride of Slorioth, Jillian Woods (Earth-616) from Secret Defenders Vol 1 16 001

Dr. Druid claimed Magnus' trove of magic items

Superhero occultist Doctor Druid[10] travelled to San Francisco to reclaim Magnus' collection of mystic artifacts,[10][62][63][1] with the excuse of giving a lecture at the University of San Francisco.[10][62][63] During the lecture, he met student Jillian Woods, who had been his lover in a previous life, and they became involved again.[10][62][63] Although Druid didn't want her to,[10] Woods joined him in the salvage,[10][62][63] believing it was safe.[10] Woods accidentally released a minor demon, "the intruder from beyond", from one of the Magnus artifacts.[35][62][63][58][1] The creature killed Woods before Druid could expel it,[35][1] then Druid then used another of Magnus' items, the Bride of Slorioth, to bind Woods' soul to her own shadow. This creature, later called Shadowoman, awoke with supernatural powers, and Druid convinced her that she was Woods, having obtained powers due to her contact with the demon and to Druid's magicks to save her life.[10][35][62][63][58][1] Shadowoman, empowered by Magnus' artifact, became a superheroine[10][35][37][30] but her secret origin caused further corruption in herself and in Druid.[35][58]

Personality

Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 10

Magnus was convincing when he pretend to be an illusionist

Magnus said he never wanted his magical powers and would have been happy not to have them.[29] His talents were not enough to earn him an apprenticeship to Merlin in Camelot, but he did become the disciple and lover of Morgan Le Fay.[11] Though he considered himself the best pupil she had ever had,[31][11] she viewed him as a disappointment in retrospect.[23] Throughout their relationship, Magnus downplayed Le Fay's evil plans, deluding himself, until she got her hands on the Darkhold and Magnus realized her boundless evil. Unable to stay with her, he betrayed her at the risk of his life and fled, attempting in the process to thwart Le Fay's plans,[11] something he would continue to do for centuries to come.[40][41]

Magnus had a classic English manner, including typical British words such as "dapper"[28] and old-fashioned expressions such as "legerdemain."[3] He was an elegant, polite, gentlemanly, and flattering man,[77] especially with the ladies;[77][19] he also respectfully addressed the High Evolutionary as "Sir", "Milord",[4] and "Lord Wyndham."[38] Magnus listened when spoken to, even if this was to point out problems with him that he should change: He adapted his style of clothing and attire when Mrs. Dolly asked for it,[28] with a more touched-up beard, handlebar moustache[29] and an old-fashioned suit with a hat and cane. He resorted to elegant if old-fashioned gestures, such as kissing a lady's hand,[19] and was careful not to take control of a body more than necessary.[38][5][39]

Jessica Drew (Earth-616), Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616), Morgan Le Fay (Earth-616) from Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Suprem Vol 1 9 001

Morgan Le Fay's former lover, Magnus became her enemy and developed a fondness for Spider-Woman

Magnus attempted to be a mentor[29][19][7][20][21][8] and friend to Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman),[29][2][8] giving her the chance to find her own way,[22] but feeling motivated to protect her from harm.[19] Magnus had entered into the relationship because he felt indebted to her father Jonathan for having "borrowed" his body in the past, and wanted to repay him by helping his daughter.[5][6][39] During this time, Magnus fell in love with Jessica;[23][1] becoming concerned about the emotional involvement, he cut off contact with her,[5][39][61] hoping to give her a chance to develop on her own.[31] However, when Jessica seemingly died and Magnus saw the opportunity to have her astral form with him indefinitely, he succumbed to temptation and took her with him rather than attempt to resurrect her.[23] Eventually realizing the selfishness of his ways, he helped her return to the world of the living[23][11] and even sacrificed his own existence for her.[11] Magnus' friendship with Spider-Woman was offensive to Le Fay, and one of her motives for revenge against her.[11]

Although Magnus tried to be a reasonably moral person[71] and took risks to protect others,[4][11] he often resorted to deception and half-truths to his ends: He convinced Jessica Drew to travel with him to Los Angeles[71] in search of her father Jonathan Drew, not revealing that he, Magnus, had already had dealings with Jonathan when he possessed him for over ten years,[30] not even when he supposedly told Jessica everything he knew about Jonathan.[22] He resisted revealing to Jessica his exact relationship with Le Fay,[27][22] and throughout their time together, he did not tell her that he was a ghost possessing a human body.[2] More excusably, in the first fight against Le Fay in Los Angeles, Magnus used illusions to make it appear that he and Jerry Hunt had died, in order to fool Le Fay, though Jessica was fooled as well.[29] When Le Fay seemingly killed Jessica, Magnus was did not try to restore Jessica's spirit to her body, even though he might be able to do so, because he preferred to spend time with Jessica on the astral plane.[23] He was also willing to sacrifice other people, such as when Gregor Russoff died, under Magnus' control, to prevent Chthon from returning,[4][38] although he was respectful with Russoff's family for to their loss.[38]

Powers

Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 12 002

Magnus had a number of magic skills

  • Ghost Form: Magnus had been murdered by Morgan Le Fay while he was astrally projecting;[11][1] that is usually enough to kill a person, but Magnus had anticipated this and had developed a spell that would allow him to transport himself to an astral plane[11] (though not the plane normally called Astral Plane). In his true ghostly form,[5][39] he could return to Earth[11] in the form of a faintly visible transparent ghost[4] (his astral form),[2][1] but this was arduous for him and he could not remain on Earth for more than a day in that form.[11] In spectral form, Magnus could survive in the astral plane,[11][45][46] fly in the air,[2][4] and interact with other people in astral form,[2] including fighting them.[29]
To remain on Earth for more than a day,[1] Magnus had to possess a living human being[2][45][1] using his magic,[46] something that was only possible under certain conditions and not at any time.[23] Possession was a quick and painless process,[2] and the victim apparently had no recollection of what happened when Magnus left the body, his or her memories distorted.[23] On other occasions, Magnus left the possessed body, and it lay unconscious until Magnus returned to it, the latter being typical for bodies he had been possessing for months or years.[29][4]
  • Magic: Magnus demonstrated a number of magical abilities, including the following:[71][1]
    • Divination: Magnus had the ability to find out things about other people in ways that have not been revealed. Although he knew palm-reading, he didn't need it to figure out details of Jessica Drew's past just by watching her walk by.[27] While in London, Magnus learned that Jonathan Drew had been murdered in Los Angeles and that the crime had not been solved (although he could not guess who the killer was). He was also able to find an affordable rental in Los Angeles, even without looking at the listings;[71] and learned that Jack Russell had had access to the Darkhold.[29]
    • Animation: Magnus's subconscious mind once animated Priscilla Dolly dolls to move on their own, walk, and talk out loud (even without having vocal cords) in order to awaken Magnus himself and give his conscious mind a message. Magnus was shocked to see the dolls moving, and when he realized this, the dolls stopped moving.[19]
    • Astral Projection: Even before he died, Magnus had the ability to project his astral form outside of his body.[11][44][45][17][46] Magnus also developed a spell that allowed him to transport his astral form to an astral plane,[11] so that, when his body was killed while he was astrally projecting,[11][1] his spirit would survive.[11][17][46] Magnus' magic also allowed him to free other people's astral bodies from their physical forms,[2][5][6][39][61] and even transport his astral form and others to the past and back.[2][5][6][39][61]
    • Conjuration: This spell, while limited,[1] allowed Magnus to generate small objects from thin air. He conjured flowers into an empty vase,[77] and conjured the Spider-Woman suit from his finger, causing it to appear around her body,[77][3] and, on another occasion, around the body of a woman whom Spider-Woman's astral form had possessed.[2] Spider-Woman once theorized that Magnus could also repair damage to her uniform.[7] Magnus had little concern about using this power in public,[77][3] as he believed such minor miracles[71] gave witnesses something to talk about and allowed them to create their own legends.[2] Magnus did not have the ability to resurrect dead bodies.[19]
Jessica Drew (Earth-616), Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 12 001

Magnus could use his magic against physical items

    • Energy Blasts: Magnus could project energy blasts[1] from his hands. These blasts had physical effects, destroying tangible objects (such as the shackles holding Spider-Woman in the Playhouse).[19] In his astral form, Magnus also launched these beams at Morgan Le Fay's astral form, but they did no hurt her because she was too powerful.[29]
    • Entrancing: Magnus would use mystic passes to entrance some victims under certain circumstances. He was seen using this spell once on the Brothers Grimm, during a ritual in which they offered no resistance.[19]
    • Extra-Sensory Perception: Magnus had extraordinary sensory abilities that allowed him to identify the use of magic[31][19] and demonic presence,[4] though sometimes he could not pinpoint the exact source, only its general presence over a large area.[31] In 1958, when Magda visited Mount Wundagore, Magnus probed Magda's mind to confirm she was not being used as a vessel by Chthon, but this distracted him long enough for Chthon to introduce the Darkhold into Wundagore, an event that Magnus perceived as a physically-painful psychic assault.[4] Later, in Los Angeles, he observed traces of magic in the Dolly Household,[31] caused by Brothers Grimm and Madame Doll's use of magic,[19] but initially chalked it up to his imagination.[31] During the night, however, his abilities sensed that his ward Jessica Drew was in danger, and subconsciously animated several wooden dolls to wake and warn himself, even giving him directions to where he should go.[19] Magnus also used these powers in San Francisco when Jessica was being stalked by Morgan Le Fay, so Magnus learned of Drew's problem, its nature, and even a possible solution by traveling back in time to defeat Le Fay. Following that battle, in which Spider-Woman's body seemingly died, Magnus used his magic to understand what had happened, though this time his abilities failed.[2]
    • Illusion Casting:[1] Magnus could cast illusions good enough to even fool Morgan Le Fay. These illusions affected everyone who perceived them, with only Magnus seeing the truth. Thus, Magnus convinced Le Fay that she had burned Magnus' body to ashes, and later that she had done the same to the body of Jerry Hunt (it is unclear what Hunt perceived during the illusion of his own death). When Le Fay was defeated, Magnus reversed these spells.[29]
    • Levitation: Magnus caused the immobilized Werewolf to float back to his home.[29]
    • Magnus' own spell to protect the Tower of the Darkhold: Magnus developed his own[11][6][49][50][42] intricate spell[11][6][49][50][42] to protect a certain tower on the Isle of Wight[11][42][40][41][43] so that nobody with evil intent could enter[11][16][6][49][50][42][43] without forfeiting his or her life.[25] The purpose of this spell was that Magnus had placed the dangerous grimoire Darkhold inside the Tower before weaving and casting this spell,[11][16][6][49][50][42][43][40][41] and this would prevent it from falling in the wrong hands.[82][42] His spell was so powerful that Morgan Le Fay was unable to break it, which enraged her.[25] The spell worked perfectly fine, and was only bypassed when[42][55][56][82] a good-intentioned sorcerer, Modred the Mystic,[15][50][42][55][56][40][41][82] entered only to be corrupted by the Darkhold.[15][50][6][82]
    • Magnus' own spell to survive physical death: Magnus developed a spell of his own that would allow him to transport his spirit self to the astral plane[11] in the event that his physical body died while he was astral projecting (which it did)[11] by mystically preserving his astral form[5][6][39][9] and thus prevent it from dissipating.[11] This spell was later used by Magnus' teacher, Morgan Le Fay.[5][6][39][9] Magnus also used this spell to prevent Spider-Woman's spirit form from disappearing and instead she continued to exist on the same plane as him.[23]
    • Possession: Magnus had the magical ability[1] to possess living beings on Earth, taking control of their actions.[2][25][4][45][46] A normal human could not resist this possession, which was quick and painless;[2] not even a werewolf could resist Magnus' magic.[4] After his death, Magnus needed a host body to interact with the physical world[2] and to spend more than a day on Earth,[11] but once he controlled a body, he could spend years inside it.[38] Magnus could use the possessed body for any purpose, including casting other spells from within the body.[19][4] At least one of the people he possessed, David Ishima, felt confusion and uncertainty when he was released.[23] Magnus could not possess more than one body at a time.[4]
    • Shields: Magnus had the ability to generate magical shields[1] with hand movements, including force fields that surrounded himself or people he wanted to protect, even without them knowing what was happening.[29] Magnus also used circles of blue fire to restrain and protect people, sealing them off from the outside.[19] When Excaliber set Magnus's tent on fire, he seemed unaffected by the fire; Excaliber believed he could kill him with his magic sword, but he never got the chance to try, so it is unknown if magical weapons would have penetrated Magnus's defenses.[27]
    • Spell of Binding: Magnus knew the Spell of Binding,[4] also called the Ritual of Banishment,[38] which served to bind a demon such as Chthon to a specific location such as Mount Wundagore, especially when such a bond had already existed.[4] This spell had to be read aloud from the Darkhold,[38] in an unidentified language, and could not be cast by a ghost, so Magnus had to possess a living person to cast it. If the demon resisted the binding, it could attack the caster and physically injure or harm them to stop the spell; Magnus proved capable of casting this spell even when it caused him pain, in the form of Gregor Russoff,[4] but Chthon's attacks cost Russoff his life.[4][38]
    • Spells of Forgetfulness: Magnus knew a variety of spells that could erase other people's memories.[1] After a confrontation with Morgan Le Fay in which Magnus had enlisted the unwitting aid of the Werewolf, Magnus decided to erase the memories of that encounter from the Werewolf's mind;[29] this caused Spider-Woman, who had been there, to remember the Werewolf, but not vice versa.[20] At another later point, in Bel Air, Magnus caused several partygoers to forget that Drew had ever been there, so that they could not connect Drew to Spider-Woman's later presence.[3] When Spider-Woman died, her ghost asked Magnus to cast a spell to make everyone who had ever known her forget she ever existed,[2][5][6][39] so that she would not be mourned and they could move on with their lives.[2] This spell was perceived in the vicinity of the area as a ripple of confusion, and caused multiple people to be baffled as to how they had gotten to the area.[23] Though the spell had worked,[2] Magnus was weakened by the ordeal the strain of time travel,[5][6][39] and his magic had weakened over the centuries[23] and after the gruelling adventure that had just ended.[23][5][6][5][39] That made the spell short-lived[5][6][39] and several of Spider-Woman's friends remembered her almost instantly upon seeing her body.[23] That spell of forgetfulness was completely broken soon after, in part through the mediation of several superheroes.[11]
    • Thought Projection:[1] This power allowed her to communicate information to another person or cause another person to change their mind, seemingly within limits: When Priscilla Dolly first saw Jessica Drew, the pheromones Drew emitted made Dolly instinctively dislike Drew. Magnus used his magic to affect Mrs. Dolly quickly, so that Dolly perceived Drew as a lovely young woman.[28] On another occasion, Magnus used this power to reveal to Jerry Hunt (a man he had never met) where Spider-Woman was going to be; Hunt received this knowledge in the form of a highly motivating inspiration that caused him to run from his chair, unaware of how he had discovered it. In this second instance, Magnus was able to cast this spell while being captured by Morgan Le Fay and without her noticing.[29]
    • Time Travel: Magnus had the ability to travel into the past in astral form, taking the astral form of another person with him as a passenger. For this, he created a rift between time and space, to travel to a point in the past chosen by him, where the astral forms could interact with the environment in the same way as in the present time[2] (That possibly means that Magnus could only be in the past for 24 hours without possessing anyone).[11][1] This spell allowed Magnus to return to the present just a few seconds after leaving. Magnus claimed that only the most accomplished mystics could perform this spell.[2]
    • Transformation: After his magic shop in London was attacked and burned down, Magnus gestured for it to transform into a tailor's shop,[27] possibly what the shop had looked like before Magnus took over.[57][5][6]
    • Unblocking: Morgan Le Fay used a spell to render Spider-Woman's body clinically dead, and surrounded by a blocking spell that prevented Spider-Woman's astral form from returning to her body. Magnus discovered the nature of the spell, which used the bio-electric energies of Spider-Woman's powers, and offered to cast a spell, calling upon the power of Krakkan, Mehroth, and Pohldahk, that could break the block, but explained to Spider-Woman that it was not without risk. This spell was interrupted when Le Fay attacked Magnus.[23]
    • Will Increase: Magnus used his powers to increase the willpower of Spider-Woman's astral form when she was faced with psychic winds in an attempt to return to her body.[11] In a previous encounter against Morgan Le Fay and his agents in the 6th century, Spider-Woman believed that Magnus had also increased her will so that she could prevail, but never knew for sure.[2]
    • Magnus may have had other magical powers.[1]

Abilities

Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616), Priscilla Dolly (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 5 001

Magnus used his powers pretending to be a prestidigitator

Magnus had trained in the magical arts,[11][1] rising to become one of the occultists in the Cult of the Darkholders.[16] Magnus was a powerful wizard: Some of his spells and powers required decades of spiritual exercise and meditation, and others were only within the reach of the most accomplished magicians.[2] Magnus could use his magic discreetly and subtly,[71] but he enjoyed being flattered by the public and so, in recent times, he had a career as a stage magician, with some success.[3][31] Other knowledge he had gained in his human life in the 6th century, related to chivalry and its codes of conduct.[26]

Magnus was also a convincing man when he wanted to be,[27] and he was streetwise enough to tell his landlady that his young female companion[71][22][23] was his niece.[71][22][23][3] He was willing to lie to achieve his ends,[71][22][23] and to withhold information if he thought the other person should not know certain details.[27] He was not, however, cunning enough to foresee the movements of enemies like Morgan Le Fay, and was deceived by her several times.[11]

In his relationship with Jessica Drew, Magnus was a mentor[29][19][7][20][21][8] as well as a friend.[29][2][8] Jessica saw him as a father figure who had helped her greatly without expecting anything in return,[72] capable of repairing both the tear in her uniform and the worries in her mind,[7] without her understanding why he even worried about her.[72] When he left her life, it was so she could grow and develop on her own.[31] Magnus proved to be an efficient teacher not only to Jessica, but also to the Knights of Wundagore, whom he trained as an honorable fighting force.[4][57][52][42]

Weaknesses

Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616) from Avengers Vol 1 241 001

Magnus was a ghost, with a number of limitations

Magnus's body is destroyed, his bones turned to dust in an unmarked grave.[25][1]

Magnus's astral form was not invulnerable to magical attacks. Morgan Le Fay used her magic to combat Magnus's astral form repeatedly, with her in both astral[29][11] and physical forms. Le Fay's attacks could throw Magnus' astral form into solid objects and cause him to feel pain,[2] as well as render him stunned and unconscious.[2][23][11] If the body Magnus was possessing was destroyed, it was theorized that this would be enough to destroy him, or at least keep him away from Earth.[29]

Although Magnus had been a powerful wizard in life, having participated in the battle that imprisoned Chthon in Mount Wundagore,[32] over the centuries his powers dwindled, and in recent times he believed that he had exhausted the amount of magic he could use,[29] reducing the range of his exploits.[31] Morgan Le Fay criticized both Magnus' magical abilities and his limited vision, as she was able to defeat him through trickery and superior power.[23]

Magnus had a soft spot for his protégée Jessica Drew, so it was possible to coerce Magnus into harming others, if that would prevent Drew from being harmed. Still, Magnus often sought an alternative solution to such problems.[19]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

At one point during his life, Magnus stole the Darkhold[14][22][11][50][6][57][49][42][40][41][1][15][44][45][17][46] but as soon as he could, he stored it in a tower[14][11][16][43][50][6][57][49][42][1][25][15][55][44][45][56][17][46] on the Isle of Wight[43][42][40][41][1][11][44][45][17][46] which he enchanted with an intricate spell[50][6][49][42][14][11][25][55][56][44][17][46] so that nobody with evil intentions could enter[16][6][57][43][50][49][42][40][41][1][14][11][25][15][55][56][44][45][17][46] without losing his or her life.[25]

During his later life after getting rid of the Darkhold,[58] and although he was living as a fugitive,[11] Magnus collected a number of magical items,[10][35][30] later known as the Magnus artifacts,[30] apparently so that other people could not use them,[58] but Magnus is believed to have used a number of these items for his own purposes.[37] Foremost among them was the Bride of Slorioth,[58] the statuette locking the demon Slorioth the demon Slorioth in a prison for millennia even before Magnus had acquired it;[58] Magnus did use the statuette without releasing Slorioth.[37] Magnus also possessed a series of protective wards that imprisoned another demon described as "the intruder from beyond".[10]

Trivia

Magnus (Sorcerer) (Earth-616), Modred (Earth-616), Otto Vermis (Earth-616) from Spider-Woman Vol 1 20 001

Magnus was one of Spider-Woman's earlier mentors

  • Magnus' ascetic appearance with a tonsure, beard without moustache, simple clothing with cowl or hooded cloak, a rope-like belt, and plain footwear (first seen in Spider-Woman #50 with sandals in spectral form, also seen in Avengers #240 and Avengers #241; and with boots while stealing the Darkhold in Avengers #187 and Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme #11, as well as in his profile in Avengers Assemble #1) is compatible with the Celtic monks in the 6th century England (based on historical accounts) and with Columban monastic tradition associated with Saint Columbanus (both being Catholic traditions: Columbanus had been an Irish monk himself, his monastic tradition deeply rooted in Celtic Christianity). It is unconfirmed, however, whether Magnus ever joined a religious order. As he had been Morgan Le Fay's lover,[25][15] he was certainly not keeping a vow of chastity. Magnus also swore "by all the Elder Ones", which is far from a Catholic invocation.[11]
  • When possessing Jonathan Drew's body, Magnus drank wine served by Porga; it is unrevealed whether it was Magnus' drinking preference or the preference of the body he was possessing.[25]
  • When possessing the tailor, Magnus slept with a linen pyjamas.[31] He was also known to snore, at least in that body.[31]
  • In his London shop, Magnus had several books, including one written by J.R.R. Tolkien and a copy of Tolstoy's War and Peace.[27]
  • Magnus was known to use deceit for his own ends: When performing the ritual for Madame Doll, Magnus claimed that "all magic is an extension of the will" and, as Magnus was being coerced, his magic alone would not be enough for the ends, thus he needed to use mystic flames. This was a lie, as he really used the flames to imprison the Brothers Grimm and to obfuscate Madame Doll's view.[19] Similarly, when Magnus told Jessica what he supposedly knew about her father Jonathan just before confronting Pyrotechnics, Magnus omitted having possessed Jonathan's body, even if he said he was telling her all he knew about Jonathan;[22] and just before his ghostly form disappeared, Magnus told Jessica his own origin story, again not mentioning how he had possessed her father to confront Chthon.[11] In other, more excusable situations, he allowed Jessica to think that he had been killed, as part of a plan so that Morgan Le Fay would also think he had been destroyed.[29]
  • Magnus refused to transfer Nathan Dolly's spirit to Jerry Hunt's body, because apparently that would leave Dolly in control of Hunt's body, and Hunt's spirit would be unable to control that body (or maybe even be destroyed).[19] However, Magnus had little qualm possessing the bodies of living people, as he was doing with the tailor at that point;[23] Magnus did control Jonathan Drew's body for over a decade, depriving Jonathan of those years of his own life (Admittedly in both cases he was possessing bodies for what he considered a worthy cause).[4]
